Does Peggy Gou need her own thread? I have no idea at all but her new single is so nice, I felt like I was going to run into breathing difficulties while I was listening to it. Is she any good?

pretty good dj if you like techno, electro and house in the classicist tradition. recommend checking out her boiler room / dekmantel set.

hadn't heard the new one, until just now. better than her earlier productions which i thought were a bit faceless

i did buy one of her rekids 12s on the strength of the galcher lustwerk remix on the other side, which is an incredible carl craig style journey

I'm putting together my 2018 mix and still don't get It Makes You Forget (Itgehane) - it just sounds vaguely pleasant but inconsequential.

Can anyone give me a way in here? What is it that people love about this track so much?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 10:40 (six years ago)

I also liked-liked not loved-loved the track until I finally heard it out, there’s something very... comforting and vibesy about it on the dancefloor, and the evident abundant happiness it provokes in people. It’s that as much as anything else that makes it classic.

Other tracks which had a similar dynamic for me are Kyla’s “Do You Mind” and Todd Terje’s “Inspector Norse”, both of which I thought were great on first contact but never imagined they would be massive anthems that were also personally important to me - but the latter personal important ultimately was routed through their status as anthems.

Sorry for the double post

Tim F, Thursday, 28 November 2019 11:02 (six years ago)

Itgehane felt like an instant classic the moment I heard it. There’s a certain timelessness about it - like it’s so familiar and reminiscent of a million other songs yet evidently it’s own thing. And yes, it kills on the dancefloor every time.

Roz, Thursday, 28 November 2019 16:21 (six years ago)

It’s a deceptively polished track. I don’t really know what to say about it other than I think it’s gorgeous and I love it.

ingredience (map), Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:28 (six years ago)

I see it compared to Inspector Norse a lot, but they are so so very different beasts. That song is massive, anthemic and cathartic, evoking emotions of sheer exuberance. It has a climax. Itgehane is cozy and comforting (literally making you forget your worries); it flows and weaves perfectly fluidly until its done. I think it's a solid club track, but I also don't quite get the cult around it.

octobeard, Friday, 29 November 2019 19:23 (six years ago)

Itgehane is alright but I the 'chorus' melody is just close enough to the middle 8 of 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' to get the latter tune stuck in my head after a few minutes. My problem and not the tune's though!

help yourself to another slice of apple ... crumble (Willl), Friday, 29 November 2019 19:31 (six years ago)

Your problem is listening to too much Tears for Fears. There's nothing remarkable to me about Itgehane other than the lovely timbre of her voice, I prefer Starry Night. Inspector Norse really pops in a way Itgehane doesn't. I don't get that comparison at all.

viborg, Saturday, 30 November 2019 22:54 (six years ago)

like why would you ever write that if you weren’t an enormous piece of shit

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 12:18 (five years ago)

peggy gou seems like a rich person which means she def sucks but would i ever write a multi-paragraph post about how she refused to organize records at her record store job (quelle scandal) where most of the kudos in the comments were coming from people who were also saying misogynist, racist, and ablelist shit, i’d wonder who was the real monster here

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 12:27 (five years ago)

the comments were a cesspit. Vakula chiming in was enough of a red flag for me.

If Wang thought she was really that awful then surely he would have distanced himself from her long before now. There are plenty of articles out there about how he, as a neighbour, helped get her career started. If she was as awful as he claims then it would have been easy - and diplomatic - of him to distance himself by downplaying his support, "oh its not really to do with me, let's not talk about her" would have been sufficient.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 12:54 (five years ago)

yeah that line quoted above jumped out at me too.

tbh i regret posting/sharing that - it was a bit of an amusing trifle when I read it earlier but it pissed me off the more i thought about it. Like sure, she comes across as a bit of an asshole but asshole white, male DJs are a dime a dozen and I don’t see Daniel Wang coming for the rest of them? Just her? guess none of them had the bad luck of being his neighbour in Berlin.

And him saying that she doesn’t deserve a pass for being a WOC is just... yeah, yikes.

Roz, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 13:35 (five years ago)

I kept reading waiting for the bombshell that would warrant the amount of time he implied he needed to compose it, and the "trembling" and nauseousness etc he teased in the beginning, but it was just a smattering of varying shitty behavior stories. Lots of extremely you had to be there anticlimaxes.

daniel wang is a legend, weird coincidence but i finally got the 4LP rush hour set a couple weeks ago (bought the cd version when it came out but hadn't listened to it for years) and pretty much all of it still sounds super fresh

can't really think of any other producer / dj who's contributed as much to the rehabilitation and reintegration of actual disco / italo into dance music (as opposed to just jacking hooks to make banging filter house tracks)

metro area maybe but they were years behind him, faze action i suppose kicked it off w/ "in the trees" but imo their overall body of work is much less impressive

peggy gou is a fine dj with average skills (which in the cdj era doesn't mean a whole lot) and slightly better than average music taste, she has some pretty good early productions (i reach for her rekids EPs a lot though i like the galcher remix more than any of the originals) and a lot of new ones that i find pretty boring, and like most other "top tier" techno / house DJs in the 2010s her popularity relative to other DJs (and the speed with which she burst onto the scene) doesn't seem in line to me with much else other than being very photogenic

everyone has meltdowns on social media sometimes, famous ppl more than average, famous musicians much more than average and DJs probably more than anybody else because they've been cooped up unable to work for 9 months now, so while this is obviously not the best use of his time i'm cutting danny some slack here

the late great, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:15 (five years ago)

Isn't this kind of alleged narcissistic toxicity pretty common in the DJ business to begin with? What is to be gained by posting this publicly? Any catharsis acquired doing this is its own form of toxic narcissism imho.

However, I do think she's a bit of a flavor of the month type, so if this rant is largely true, seems like she's going to burn enough bridges her talent won't be able to overcome in the long term.

octobeard, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:32 (five years ago)

yes, nothing, agree, agree

the late great, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:37 (five years ago)

DW has been posting these Gou rants to his personal FB for a couple of years now. I'm not sure why he felt the need to take it into public realms.

PG is such a huge brand that this will have about as much impact on her career as a fly trying to take down an elephant.

I'm not sure why the so called underground of dance music gets upset by all this kind of (alleged) behaviour. I feel they should expect nothing from mainstream dance culture, ignore it and come to the realisation it is a separate world based entirely on being as famous / popular as possible no matter what that might take. Also, the sooner the "underground" stops aspiring to embrace the tropes of mainstream dance culture the better. So-called undergrounds are much, much better off when they devote less energy to trying to make the mainstream change and stop perceiving the mainstream as some sort of mirror image.

This 100 times, and it also applies in many other genres as well as media realms. Poetry and literature in particular would do well to dispense with the ridiculous idea that self-publishing, for example, is somehow "lesser than," which is one that has creeped into even the more strident, experimental realms of US poetry in recent years. It's disappointing and it sucks.

corrs unplugged, Friday, 16 June 2023 18:46 (two years ago)

Is that a 9Pm sample?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 16 June 2023 19:51 (two years ago)

maybe just a reference

corrs unplugged, Friday, 16 June 2023 20:16 (two years ago)

Didn't expect her to be having Top 5 chart hits!

nashwan, Saturday, 19 August 2023 14:06 (two years ago)

it's basically ATB's "9pm (Til I Come)" for 2023 though. I'm actually more surprised at how long it's taken for these kind of festival headline acts to have chart success - I thought it would be Patrick Topping or Bicep who would have beat her to a massive crossover hit.

pretty good dj if you like techno, electro and house in the classicist tradition.

I like this Michael Wycoff-sampling remix:

i don’t think this holds a candle to any of the singles on thw Jam City record, which also reprises this sound in certain ways.

daniel wang has to hold this L

xheugy eddy (D-40), Thursday, 31 August 2023 20:39 (two years ago)

I will say I wanted to dislike this at first because the best all-time ATB 9pm rip is Vitas' "Тело" ("Body") which you can see performed at the Kremlin:

xheugy eddy (D-40), Thursday, 31 August 2023 20:40 (two years ago)

but I came around on it. it feels very 'A&R'd' to me but the end result works ... not sure I can put it on the level of itgahene but its a W

I’m lost with all the mentions of Daniel Wang in here. Have no idea who he is or what’s the connection to Peggy Gou. Care to enlighten me?

this has wound up the purists greatly and I love it for that - too bad it's just not very good

boxedjoy, Thursday, 9 November 2023 07:08 (two years ago)

i'm just baffled at both the pairing and how mediocre it is

And it's pretty good, nothing ground breaking or anything, but quite solid. I liked the 2nd half much more than the first. 1+1=11's lead is totally riffing on a melody I've heard before, though. Wonder if anyone else here is feeling similarly and can remember the song I'm thinking of.

octobeard, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:47 (one year ago)

1+1=11 is my fave and yes, totally agree but can't think what it is.

stirmonster, Thursday, 6 June 2024 18:25 (one year ago)

Love the melody, not so much the drums

corrs unplugged, Friday, 7 June 2024 06:24 (one year ago)

there is also a version floating about (literally) with no drums.

stirmonster, Friday, 7 June 2024 10:18 (one year ago)

Oh, neat!
