Incredibly shit drawings of guitars

Something I have grown to love over the years is the ineptitude of a large fraction of artists when faced with the challenge of drawing a guitar. This image from the "real people in comics" rekindled the love, but I want to see what you've got.

I went looking for Hard Rock Comics because I remember how terrible their art was. But the one thing they seemed to get within spitting distance of 'not bad' was guitars.

Drawings of drums are generally pretty bad too, and drums are usually just cylinders! You'd think that someone who studied drawing would have a basic idea about forms.

Haha, I think it’s worst on here... look at the angles of the neck and headstock! It’s clear the artist drew Keith’s hands first, and then very awkwardly tried to work in the gtr.

I love this thread because apparently no one looks at guitars while drawing them. And yet every serious artist everywhere has been told to actually draw from life, even when (especially when) you think you know what someone or something looks like. It is as if art school is basically: you need to be looking at people and fruit to draw them. Guitars, however? Close your eyes and go to town, be as random as possible.

Fleetwood Machiavelli (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 18 April 2020 01:30 (five years ago)

Probably off-topic for this thread but providing a (completely implausible) snare stand is small comfort given that a kick drum with no spurs is liable to roll off the stage...

"Incredibly shit drawings of drumkits" thread would dwarf this one, if it were something that anyone but me cared about.

I mean, many non-guitarists have at least looked at guitars and kinda tried to represent what they look like. Many non-guitarists have held guitars. Some even own and display them as collectibles or art objects!

In contrast, only drum nerds have elaborate opinions about tom mounting systems, double-braced vs. single-braced cymbal stands, tilters, booms, single vs. double lugs.

Incidentally the zigzag pattern of the lines on the second Ringo pic indicate a system of rope drumhead tensioning that was becoming obsolete in the 19th century. Meanwhile the first pic is a little ahead of its time; those lugs have an 80s Pearl Export vibe!

This is fascinating, because the visual trope is a constant in illustrations of toy soldiers, the little drummer boy, etc. It seems to carry over into images of trap sets, even though there was no overlap.

More than anything, the left hand placement and "activity" is just a disaster. I don't think the rest of the guitar is that bad actually, I mean there's six tuning pegs, it looks like a Jag with a glandular problem more than anything.

for real that is a Telecaster body he's apparently trying to stab with a Strat neck - one cutaway, control plate with knobs and switch in a line. Art guy you're doing an illustration for the FUCKING FENDER catalogue, how do you get their two iconic models jumbled up?

is there a thread for particularly egregious examples of actors faking playing guitar? Drives me insane. rewatched I'm Not There fairly recently-- Christian Bale, naturally, could clearly play. Cate Blanchett, meanwhile, does this shit:

flappy bird, Monday, 15 June 2020 19:41 (five years ago)

I am willing - just barely - to allow that the Fender catalog illustrations were meant to be impressionistic on purpose. Otherwise they could just have used photographs. So including elements of several iconic guitar designs could have either been acceptable, or even desired.

I don't get the point of a Tele with humbuckers. Isn't the original design's distinctive single-coil sound whole point of having one, at least nowadays? That's why I own a Strat and an SG.

Yeah, it's a reasonable compromise. Plus, for whatever reason, they look like less of an abomination than a Fat Strat. (shudders)

Soz (Not Soz) (Vast Halo), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 13:29 (five years ago)

When you get into the details of the original Fender WR humbucker pickup design from the 70s, there's something to the original copper/nickel/iron magnets in them that's tonally separate from other humbuckng pickups of the era and completely different from the HBs that Fender uses now.
https://reverb.com/news/dont-fence-me-in-the-fender-wide-range-humbucker-family

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 19 June 2020 21:26 (five years ago)

Yep - the idea was to use a machineable ferromagnetic alloy so that you could have magnet polepieces (the Fender sound) but they could also be screwed up and down (a humbucker principle, since Seth Lover did both these and the Gibson PAFs). CuNiFe is machineable with a screw thread (AlNiCo would chip and shatter), but wasn't commercially available after the 70s so they stopped using it. Demand from the boutique pickup market brought it back maybe 5 years ago?

I love and forgive this one, but nonetheless it must be noted that the bluegrass banjo player is inexplicably playing what looks like a tenor banjo (four strings) and that the guitarist is one-finger barring the entire sixth fret, and doing so with his finger ON the fret. He also appears to be holding his pick perpendicular to the strings and the tailpiece is apparently so close to the soundhole that his arm is blocking it entirely.

Weird amounts of care taken on strange details, with glaring omissions in others. Like, five-string banjo with four strings and a strap. Six-string guitar with six strings and no strap.

Ascots, or maybe cravats, plus sweater vests, because the artist clearly can't be trusted with normal shirts or ties? Cross-hatch film instead of actual cross-hatching? Hey btw the 70s called and wants their graphics technique back.

At least the faces made of badly kneaded bread dough are accurate, so there's that.
