fuck, sweet tune! and that weird subtly psychedelic percussion sound in the background, reminds me of the glottal noises that the jug player in the 13th floor elevators used to make

Another one I keep coming back to, so flipping funky. Don't know who's playing that bass but Keni Burke and Scott Edwards (who's all over the great Stevie albums) get credits on the album so that figures

^ been jamming this one a lot today. was a single in the UK only and pretty much flopped at the time, but it's some really nice synthy boogie business. guy was involved with both rick james and earth, wind & firer, and i think it has got some of the funkiness of the former and the sweetness of the latter

Midnight Star - Midas Touch [Acappella AKA Bassappella version] (1986)

speaking of xxxxxpost Teena Marie, I really liked Congo Square, the last new album released before she passed--first few songs are pretty desperately philosophical more than anything else, but then she gets it together---and this transitional effect turns out to be very appropriate---wiki quotes:The album title references Congo Square, in the Tremé in New Orleans, an area in which, during times of slavery, slaves were "allowed to dance and sing in the wardrobe of their mother country on Sundays."[5] Teena Marie said of the album:
"I've been through quite a few trials and tribulations over the last two years. I spent many of those hours in prayer and felt like God was putting his arms around me. I started thinking about the music I grew up on—how inspired it was. Each song I was coming up with began to sound like the style of some favorite artist of mine from the past... Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, Billie Holliday, the old Chicago soul of The Emotions and the new Chicago vibe of Kanye West... Ice Cube's bumpin' in the trunk vibe and of course, Rick James. It's all in there."[5]
Teena Marie also expressed her appreciation for Faith Evans, saying, "I've always loved Faith and her vocal style. She reminds me of me. Her correlation with Biggie—having a career with him and without him—reminds me of me and Rick James. I feel like she's a younger me. Of the younger ladies, she's the one I love most."

xxxp State of Grace is pretty good huh. I wasn't aware of their other output.
Here's another one I'd picked up recently. Not sure how obvious it is, since my knowledge of the genre isn't really deep, but it's funky as hell. It looks like there are some reasonably priced copies still on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Steve-Watson-Born-To-Boogie-My-Little-One/release/7554675

I love how strong the vinyl reissue scene has been, lately. My theory is that Discogs is a big positive influence, since it's made it easy to quantify how many people want out-of-print releases.

hey archcarrier, if you don’t know it there’s another HUGE demis disco banger called ‘I dig you’ which has this funked-up eastern med melody and big squiggly disco synths and strings. was a b-side originally I think but it’s also on the classic charity shop staple ‘the demis roussos magic’ (has a boring mauve coloured cover, looks like a shit box of chocolates)

xxp - Wow, 'I Dig You' is indeed fantastic. I only knew Demis from Aphrodite's Child and a couple of ballads ('My Friend the Wind', 'It's Five o'Clock', both great, 'Lovely Lady of Arcadia' not so much), but I guess it makes sense to think of him as the eccentric Greek cousin of the Bee Gees.

Fabulous thread, just saw----this band may have already been mentioned, but can't resist quoting a late great ilxor, as already quoted on Amazon, re Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band s/t debut:
Disco rarely got more musically or lyrically sophisticated than on this self-titled debut album. Long before he took up the role of Kid Creole with the Coconuts, wordsmith August Darnell cushioned small, perfect truths--singer Cory Daye promises to get her "equivalency diploma" in love in "I'll Play the Fool"--in knowingly retro sounds. Stylish, honest, and completely one of a kind. --Rickey WrightSpeaking of Cory Daye, check out her solo album, Cory and Me w Dr B etc. input--the last I heard, she and a bunch of them are still performing together.
Speaking of Africa, don't miss Rough Guide To African Disco, esp, w bonus disc. Disc 1's opening track is weirdly generic, but the rest of it takes disco expectations on a trip.
Ditto this Nicky Siano comp---I'm told he hated the d-word, didn't want it on here, but Soul Jazz insisted---but disco-and-boogie is a handy tag for it---he really likes songs that tell stories that you can/have to dance to:

As described in his CD notes, Siano's sound design, influenced by Mancuso's approach, was logicallybased on and changing with the rooms and scenes he performed in as the feast moved around NYC.The Gallery opened in the summer of '73. Couch-potato arena rock ruled. There and elsewhere, DJs and dancers (especially blacks,Latinos, gays) were among those, at times closely observed, who chose to carve fresh heat from the vinylbeast. Spinning out of this disc, the Gallery is mercury stillrising, through crosstown funk, soul, and one gospelsong, personalized: Gloria Spencer proclaims, "I got it! I don't understand it! I gotit!" A jet blasts (like, "Amen!") out of Exuma's "Obeah Man." The Temptationslay down the "Law of the Land": "You might not like who you are, but youbetter start. 'Cause you sure can't be nobody else." But the music rumbles and clatters like aroulette wheel. Meanwhile, turns out that Bonnie Bramlett's "Crazy 'Bout MyBaby" is crazy like a tambourine and a fox, shaking in wait for that slowhanddobro.Loleatta Holloway, Bobby Womack, Bill Withers, the Isleys, and Undisputed Truth also make the most of prior knowledge and surprise.Without waiting for the remix: These are original (full-length) LP tracks andseven-inch singles. Yet great breaks burst out of (and roll through) goodgrooves, good songs. Often. Also see http://www.nickysiano.com/ and http://www.timlawrence.info/.

And xgau almost nailed this one:Midnight Rhythm [Atlantic, 1979]At last a whole disco album that actually brings off all the disco tricks--exploding out of the speakers, washing over the room, and so forth. The thump of the bass drum never dominates the rhythmic pulse, and the lyrical tag lines avoid the words "dance," "dancer," "dancing," "dancin'," and "disco"--until an orgasmic break (repeated once) that goes "Dancin', dancin', dancin', dancin'." Monofunctional but potent. A- "almost nailed" because dunno that it was really the first, though obv. he heard more than most people, certainly me, but yeah at the time it was kind of like back when Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing At Baxter's was the first whole acid-rock album I heard that sounded like all those psychedelic posters etc. looked. . Also dunno about "monofunctional," because some of it was good for tripping as well as dancing; I had flashbacks to it when first heard Algiers.

That Donnell Pitman track's interesting - it's basically Ripple "The Beat Goes On And On" with a vocal plonked on top, but it works....

i've spammed ilm about this song before but i've been binging on it once again lately...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y1lgh166rkFern Kinney - Groove Me (1979)
starts off as a pretty sweet pop reggae track and then it veers off into outer space about halfway through. so good and pretty easy to find cheap ime. cover of a king floyd southern soul song btw, original is fucking excellent too if you don't know that.

and this is another track off the same fern kinney album as the above
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaxyQF0jegQFern Kinney - Baby Let Me Kiss You (1979)
bit more of an electronic one but still really spacey and again it's really easy to find the 12" in the UK - it's the b-side of her big hit 'together we are beautiful'

Early Cameo is SUCH a treasure trove. "It's Serious" is one of my top jams (and I suspect it's the first track to use the "oo-wa oo-wa" chant, swiftly plundered by Michael Zager), almost all of the Secret Omen album is great, and I've just discovered "Cameosis" from 1980.

The original Source/Candi Staton went down particularly well, as nobody seems to know it; I had a similar reaction with Tony Lee's "Reach Up" a few weeks ago, when people realised it had the vocal from Phats & Small. Looking forward to pulling a similar trick with Carrie Lucas on Friday.
George Duke, D-Train and Players Association were all requests. The D-Train sounded particularly fantastic; I never quite know what's going to sound best on my PA system, until I play it out. On the downside, the Debbie Jacobs didn't sound great, although it plays fine at home.
Sylvester got the most dancers, obviously. But the early-set jazz-funk was much appreciated, too.

From excellent sister thread I Love Deep Cuts--a yard sale treasure:
Another xpost Deep Cuts album mostly, though I think/hope Chic's "I Need Your Love" got a decent amount of airplay. Seems like a Chic album with well-served guest lead vox---Carly Simon at her best! The only track I kinda listen askance at is the closer w Debbie Harry. From the solo debut, and Nile & Nard produced that too, but the CREEM reviewer who liked it was not a Chic fan, so that put me off listening, and it disappeared pretty quickly, so another DC album but here's this---thanks again Discogs!

― macropuente (map), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 01:32 (six years ago)
and i should say it's not a b-side! it's from a double a side released in 1987
― macropuente (map), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 01:33 (six years ago)
That 1987 release was a re-issue. It was on the B-side of Paradise Garage classic "Sentimentally It's You", released in 1979. I vastly prefer this to "Sentimentally It's You", but would still prefer an instrumental version; Theo's vocals rub me up the wrong way.

I've been told by a friend who goes to "modern" rooms at Northern Soul events that Revelation's "Feel It" often gets an airing. It'll get a first airing from me on Friday night, too - as will Chemise "She Can't Love You" (1982), recommended to me by a regular. This gets better with every play; all those little staccato stabs and squelches really do it for me.

I'm having a good afternoon. These are all from around October 1981.
Arthur Adams - You Got The FloorThis builds from a subdued start, hitting its stride around 1:49, then peaking with a long jazzy instrumental section that eventually closes the track.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wm0e1fTpXo
The Frontline Orchestra - Don't Turn Your Back On MeMore strident and less weedy than Britfunk too often tended to be, and as such deservedly embraced by Knuckles and Levan.

Letta Mbulu - KilimanjaroSets out its stall early, then sticks there to pleasing effect.

New arrival here, about halfway through the thread and my computer is now refusing to play any more music at this time so I'll need to take a break but what a lot of superb selections!
My favorite new discovery so far is Low Down Dirty Rhythm from the top comment. Although Patrick Cowley's star seems to be once again ascendant he remains criminally underrated.
I'd also rate these tunes:
Black Gold - C'mon StopMark Clark - Take Me I'm Yours (obviously)Donald Byrd - Thank You For Funking Up My LifeMelba Moore - Love's Comin' At Ya!Shalamar - Right in the SocketDr Togo - Be FreeVera - Take Me To The BridgeThe Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens Band - On The Beat Empire Projecting Lisa – Freakman
The credits on It Should Have Been You, incredible. Produced by Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Steven Stanley and mixed by Larry Levan. I wonder what else I've missed from that team of superheroes.

I've been crossreading Tim Lawrence's Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-1979 and Vince Aletti's The Disco Files 1973-78: New York's Underground, Week by Week: the latter is def catnip for collectors, though both have plenty DJ playlists, DJ comments on particular tracks and albums (the 12" is still several years away, so they use a lot of album tracks, for full-length flow--no having to flip the 7" for part 2, if there is one provided---and sonic depth). Also, Aletti provides comments and capsule reviews of stuff he likes, going around and around NYC as the scenes and places and star DJs take off (and sometimes crash or disappear). Lawrence's saga, incl. interviews with DJs and dancers, puts it all in historical perspective, like "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and Eddie Kendricks' "Girl You Need A Change of Mind" had the kind of wild-for-the-time changes x continuity that gave DJs and dancers some ideas as well as thrills. "Soul Makossa" was an example of one that became a hit because of club play, thence to radio---but some other hits never did get radio, did without it, screw you radio!

pretty delighted to have stumbled across this -- robbie leslie's extended remix of jimmy ruffin's "hold on to my love" that disconet put out in 1981. the standard-length version, which had been a pop hit the previous year, is a tight and solid tune, but extended it really takes on a heightened sense of epic drama.

I made a few disco playlists of some of my favourite tunes for a Finnish board, might as well share them here, in case anyone's interested. They are meant to be introductions to various types of disco, but I tried to veer away from the obvious hits everyone knows:
"Classic disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlb15vknlCMtcd7ephRCOf6y- String and horn heavy tunes in the classic disco mold.
"Instrumental disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlaYhyjx3cReXChfDrj69oqR- Disco tunes that are fully instrumental or only have some backing vocals, also includes disco covers of movie themes.
"Space disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlYPs0pJOWxlmxk75CQ1ropT- Disco with space-themed lyrics and/or cosmic sounds.
"Gay disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlYFatzo2UUt8_Ntc59Kggac- Tunes done by gay artists and/or with a gay or campy feel.
"Synth disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlaGlq8la12gxpuQzGi_DF7W- Disco with synth leads, mostly boogie from the early '80s.
I'll be updating the lists every now and then.
― Tuomas, Monday, 11 May 2020 12:38 (five years ago)
Nice Tuomas! Were you into the Disco Discharge comps? Your playlists kinda remind me of them.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 09:41 (five years ago)
I have two or three of those, but never really dug deeper. The Disco Recharge series of album reissues from the same label is great though, especially since they reissued all of Boris Midney's various projects... He's pretty much my favourite disco composer/producer of them all. When it comes to disco compilations, my favourites are Ben Liebrand's magisterial "Grand 12-inches" seroes, and (for rare '80s disco and boogie) Unidisc's "Star -Funk" series.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 14:27 (five years ago)
I used to own all the Disco Discharge comp CDs, but sold them; unlike most CDs, they've retained most of their value. There's some superb stuff on them, of course, but in general the aesthetic was a pinch too zingy for my tastes - and in particular, some of the later Hi-NRG comps really weren't great at all.
― mike t-diva, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 18:08 (five years ago)
too zingy for my tastes
This is a fantastic way to describe those comps. There was always something a little ... not for me about them?
― Vegemite Is My Grrl (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 18:51 (five years ago)
What do yall mean by "zingy"? Never heard this series.
― dow, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 19:22 (five years ago)
I would recommend the Grand 12-inches series for you if you aren't familiar with it already... It covers a lot of same ground as the Disco Discharge, but has way more mellow and funky stuff, and since it isn't limited to disco only, it also has loads of great extended versions of '80s R&B and synth pop too, with an occasional old school rap and house tune thrown in as well. The only downside is that Liebrand apparently couldn't get/afford anything from the Warner Bros archives, so there's no Prince or Madonna on the comps, but other than that they have almost all the great 12"/extended mixes from the seventies and eighties you can imagine.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/58Sjf1TMQF5tMrk8xsBeFr?si=s7cnKA7LQcaUz9HoGXMH_A
And there's already one on there for the Grand 12 Inches series:

― groovypanda, Thursday, 14 May 2020 10:54 (five years ago)
And there's already one on there for the Grand 12 Inches series:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4LqfSYJkMpSNeUmcjefMSr?si=CmIeAuSEThyG_6Lb709KLA
It's nice that someone has made this, but since the actual comps apparently aren't on Spotify, it looks like in many case they've added the radio/7" edit of the song on the list, and not the 12" version, which, you know, kinda goes against the spirit of something called "Grand 12-inches" :) Based on the notes on Liebrand's site, several of the track on these comps are extended mixes he has uncovered from various archives, which have never been released on CD before, and I guess they aren't on Spotify either? There's also a handful of extended mixes he's done himself specifically for this compilations by blending together the vocal and dub mixes from the original tapes. These include "Beat the Street" by Sharon Redd, "You're the One for Me" by D-Train, "Love Can't Turn Around" by Farley Jackmaster Funk, etc., and they're mostly really good, since Liebrand is an excellent remixer.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 14 May 2020 11:34 (five years ago)
I made one more playlist:
"Smooth disco"http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdW4Wfh6CZlZwrRGFCyxmkZzh_O61L2Zf- More mellow and romantic (but still danceable) tunes for the wee hours of the night.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 14 May 2020 12:51 (five years ago)
Ah, haven't listened to the Grand 12 inches one as i've probably got 75% of the albums anyway xp
When I was making the Disco Discharge one I always tried to include the correct versions from the compilations
― groovypanda, Thursday, 14 May 2020 15:32 (five years ago)
the sound quality on the “Grand 12 Inch” series is supposedly really good too:
I have taken the greatest care to come up with the best possible masters, sometimes comparing up to 5 different versions to find out which one sounded the best and most pure. And sometimes even baking the analog master tapes to make them playable again.

Shit. Anyway, it's from Adidas Haring line.
The album that song is from has been super-collectible for a long time now. Came out on the BBC's own label, and I think the only people who bought it at the time were exactly the sort of people who bought BBC records - basically her light entertainment fanbase. And those people might have been a bit shocked to find her branching out and exploring that sort of subtle, sexy disco vibe so it pretty much died a death. But it's been a good one to look out for at carboots and charity shops because if you find it at all, it'll most likely be among a pile of Lena Zavaroni and Don Estelle records and yucky old trash like that. Sadly never turned up a copy myself, but I do know people that have found it in exactly those circumstances. Got reissued last year, but was an easy hundred quidder at one point.
This is what you're looking out for anyway:

Patrick Cowley's low-budget-sounding instrumental version of "I Feel Love" seems as much organ as synth, anyway thee former stands out, in a soulful way, highlighting latent Latinate tints of original, and might even be a Farfisa, of 60s Top Forty fame, kind of a Paradise Garage punk effect---on Some Funkettes EP of prev. unreleased 70s tracks, and seems like the sassy finale, "Spiked Punch Dub," is also thread-relevant (as is whole thing, prob., but these two jumped on me right away, and stayed here). See what you think:https://patrickcowley.bandcamp.com/

Valle is an all-timer, from his bossa stuff through the high concept 70's stuff to the boogie era. Saw him live at a Jazz club in London playing with Azymuth and it was one of the greatest concert experiences I've ever had. By the end of it everyone got off the tables and started dancing around despite the lack of space.

So now that mainstream ILM has expressed its undying love for Van Halen and Cyndi Lauper in the Best Songs of the 80s thread, I’d be interested in seeing some lists of POV or POX for specific subgenres, like top five boogie songs from 80s, top five Italo disco cuts, or your top ten post-disco jams. Feels like if it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well so I should put in some effort if I’m going to make a list, and not just post the first five songs that pop into my head. Any interest here?

Moka I respect your intent but this is basically how most attempts to initiate non-popist discussion on ILM die now. Anyway I’m still not sure when peak boogie was (was it actually the 70s?), I should probably look into that. Meanwhile research for italo would involve me checking into Reddit, our sub had quite a good run of italo for a while which I should review for the sake of completeness, but I’ve been avoiding Reddit for almost all of this year and given the way things were going last time I checked, I have some anxiety that the admins there have already taken the sub from me and handed it over to the white supremacists or whatever. TMI I know but the tl:dr is that I’m not ready to face the wall of Reddit bullshit to look into italo yet. Hence I will work on my list of top five post-disco tracks. Would it cause great offense if I tried to pass some new wave off as post-disco?

Jazz funk greats, even. It is quite good although as the name of that Throbbing Gristle LP implies, jazz funk was not exactly an unknown commodity in pop of this era. That first tune in particular is a powerful performance. (Although impossible for me to tell if they’re lip syncing in the video — I can’t even tell if the bass is plugged in.)I mostly just knew their song I.O.U. of which I’m fond of the I Dub U version.

Right now I’m really loving the Bronski Beat version of I Feel Love but maybe not quite goat material. What’s most striking is the mashup with haunting 60s pop song Johnny Remember Me. Sublime. But still not best of decade.

Atmosphere strut is magic, if you said it came out yesterday, I'd just nod. So a few years ago I fell in love with "Free" by Melba Moore, first I got it on the This is It LP and when looking for it picked up a 12" of This is It with the flipside Standing Right Here. Then a few years later I put on Standing Right There and it blew me away. Then listened again and wasn't sure if that was it. Then I went looking for it again and couldn't find it. Then I found it and listened again and yeah, it's the jam. I realize now the 12" is actually Standing Right Here on the A-side w/ This is It on the b-side, a year after This is It had been already released with a different b-side. Anyway this one is a real stomper. Especially the second half. McFadden and Whitehead, Richie Rivera mix.
