U2, obviously!

I like a bunch of '90s Britpop albums that i think are pretty unloved, like Echobelly, Charlatans, Supergrass.

lots of other artists i love i just don't think enough people are aware of and i don't really try to talk about much on here (Helen Merrill is probably the most notable, at least for my taste.)

I really liked the Kentucky-based band Sleeper Agent (their first album in particular), but looks like they’ve only been mentioned once in here, in passing. I rarely saw them noticed/reviewed in the music press, either – and they were on RCA. I just happened to see their first video when it was getting some airplay.

Not an artist as such, but I like loads of commercial EDM and the kind of euphoric trancey variety of D&B and I don't think anyone else on here is into those at all.

I'm not sure if most ppl (including/especially myself) really have an adequate vocabulary for talking about '50s music, without it turning into just a recitation of facts, historical notes, etc. There's something sui generis about that era which makes it distinct from most of the rest of rock/pop/etc. I could be totally wrong.

i always feel like ppl should be talking about little richard way more than they do. his classic original stuff feels so revolutionary and subversive and incredible every time i hear it, like it never feels even remotely dated to me. but i think the only time i see him talked about is, like, when ppl do those "100 moments that changed rock" lists. maybe it is just hard to talk about what makes those records so great.

I keep meaning to check out Kim's new album. Kandy Krush is ok I guess, the chorus is significantly more enjoyable than the verse. There's much better on the first few albums. Whenever I made CDs or playlists for friends, I would always put on a song or two. You'll Never Be Song Wrong from her debut is my favourite. Sparks, Young Heroes, Falling Out, Chaos At The Airport, Just A Feeling, Wendy Sadd, Shoot To Disable and Tuning In Tuning On (which is basically a Magazine song) are all highlights. I'm really not sure why she's so underrated.

depends on the era of ilx.

Fair point. Early ILX seemed more vocal about its dislikes, but I'm ultimately more curious about 2010s ILX.

Feel like this more of a "post your guilty pleasure" response but I'm a fan of both EMF (mostly just Schubert Dip) and Ned's Atomic Dustin (at least that first record, and the last, not so much the middling middle one)

i always laugh a little when people try and tell me that EARLY emf was great and nothing like their unbelievable stuff. i don't know why i think its funny. just thought of early-EMF is funny. like there are discrete eras of emf.

The artist who gets the most hate on ILM has to be Megan Trainor surely.

I thought 'No' was pretty good, though would have been better with another singer probably.

I don't really have an opinion on their other albums tbh. I kinda just moved onto weirder music after that, but maintained a connection to that album (which I listened to on my walkman for 18 hours straight on a trip to sweden)

This obit for the EMF bassist is def funny, esp:

Apart from his basslines, Foley was known for his party trick of putting what some claimed was a grapefruit, and others a lime, under his foreskin, and for partying. He was no stranger to drugs.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 5 April 2018 15:27 (seven years ago)

In other words, a list of stuff ILM loathes would come in handy. Seriously, what are the most hated bands/musicians on this board? Are there any?

any public expression of art-loathing, even the most necessary and self-evident, seems to arrive on the ears of the attending boobery as an invitation to "actually" back. collective loathing, by extension, is basically a job posting: rehabilitators wanted, there's probably a book in it. given this mechanism, strenuous trumpetings of aesthetic distaste become a kind of sisyphean make-work, suited only to incurable windbags (shush) and desperate masochists (granted).

happily, the ILM of the late 2010s seems to understand that studied indifference pays better long-term dividends.

not quite as cool as seeing damo's wang but (contenderizer), Thursday, 5 April 2018 15:35 (seven years ago)

i think "studied indifference" might actually be "i am so tired of talking about this shit on the internet" in some cases.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

Great stuff in that Foley obit

Their raucous blend of pop, rap, rock and dance was brash, exciting and unpredictable. They had a knack for writing songs that lodged like catchphrases, as in the chorus: The things, you say/Your purple prose just gives you away/ The things you say/You're unbur-lee-vable.

Young, lively, fashionable and good-looking, EMF seemed almost too perfect, and when they first appeared, unfounded rumours spread that they had been manufactured by a sharp-eyed Svengali as a rebellious version of New Kids on the Block.

Frank Zappa, though the needle swings drunkenly between like and dislike here.

I still consider myself a Zappa fan, although there are many caveats attached.

I'm going to suggest Southern Culture on the Skids, whose ilm thread hasn't been bumped since 2005. I listen to them regularly, and I'm even roadtripping to see them next month for my birthday.

No energy, only great chaos (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 5 April 2018 17:29 (seven years ago)

Zappa seems like a real "love him or hate him" artist? (and maybe the same person will oscillate btw. those poles at different times.)

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Thursday, 5 April 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

Re: Deke Dickersen, Southern Culture on the Skids

I haven't bumped this stuff much since 2005 myself, but it's still beloved. Garage rock motoriks along, with nary a development from the rockabilly side of the sound. I expect it will come eventually, but I miss it. Dex Romweber from Flat Duo Jets continues to do his thing, sometimes with great results. Flat Duo Jets and Rev Horton Heat's 90s records remain all time favorites for me.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Thursday, 5 April 2018 18:14 (seven years ago)

yeah anything garage rock-related that comes from the more revival era as opposed to the original era is not really heavily discussed or beloved around here. i think probably the most liked is stuff that's Oblivians related, or White Stripes and that sort of thing (though they definitely got away from being a strict garage band pretty early.)

been offline for a few days, so here is a catch up :

I still rate the first Gay Dad album pretty highly. I doubt they have many other fans on here.

umm hello.
pretty sure i have been vocal re my love.
i even have the second album.
both are bloody brilliant glam/pop albums.

U2, obviously!

not obviously.

danny wilson

only have their debut on cassette so not heard it in over 20 years, but at the time, i thought it was just wonderful.
their gig i saw with The Christians was rather special.

but one artist I really do like that no one here really cares about is Datarock

only ever got their debut due to label/band inaction, but damn, its a cracking album.
fills the need for a second CLOR album basically.

...doves ...
all albums by this band still make my heart swell.
after years of not getting them, i saw them live and all became clear.

my all too obvious entry into this club : BRMC.
no matter how generic/mono-groove they are, they still hit the spot for me and me alone.

there probably isn't a single soul that rates The Mirror on ILM. i'm pretty sure its my favorite Spooky Tooth album. Mike Patto's last stab at greatness. Way better than the Boxer albums he went on to make. Mick Jones sounding awesome before making the young girls cry with Foreigner. And Gary Wright on fire with all the goodness of his solo albums on display but with a big booming band behind him. I mean The Dream Weaver was only a year later.

call me crazy...

One of my most favourite artists ever is Joseph Arthur. I think he's a true genius and adore everything he's done, which is quite a lot.
I don't think he's disliked or anything, he's just hardly ever mentioned.

I'm also very fond of some britpop bands from the '90s that may not be the biggest hits around here:
Shed Seven (who were my favourite band when I was in high school, I still love 'em)
Cast
Kula Shaker

As for a band who I think get mostly very negative feedback on here, I dare to name Mumford & Sons. While I wouldn't say that I'm a big fan, I certainly enjoy their records a lot.

frogbs, Friday, 6 April 2018 13:25 (seven years ago)

Noodle Vague, can I ask why?

Joseph Arthur's a good response to this thread's title, if 'doesn't rate' is taken in the sense that someone simply isn't mentioned much. The guy has only a couple of thread titles to his name.

I think it's relatively hard to find people really loving the other artists I mentioned, or am I wrong? If your response is to any of those, aren't you proving my point?

I stumbled across Fishmans a while back in a Rolling Stone Japan albums list I think? and immediately fell in love. then about a year later they had a sudden burst of popularity on RYM which was very nice to see if unexpected. RYM seems to like Long Season and 98.12.28 the most but I think Uchuu Nippon Setagaya is their real masterpiece, as well as Yurameki in the Air. I had thought about making a thread here a few times but figured it probably wouldn't get much attention

Yeah I wondered what exactly happened there. Long Season has over 5000 ratings but like 98% of those have come in the last five years. Even for RYM that's pretty unusual.

All the stuff you mentioned is great...though I also have a soft spot for King Master George. So many great tunes on that one. Dunno about the rest of the early stuff though...its kind of sleepy

frogbs, Friday, 6 April 2018 13:56 (seven years ago)

the early stuff is ok but Orange is where they really hit their stride imo, from it onwards everything they did was great. the reworked live versions of early tracks on 98.12.28 are much better than the studio versions

back with a bang 12-inch still one of my favorite SOUNDING 12-inch singles of all time. so huge. and ironic given what that idiot would end up sounding like. i finally sold my copy of the first album and that single and my united skins comp to a nice guy i know who DJs northern soul and ska. just didn't feel like having them anymore. i got them from another friend of mine who was a boston skin and felt the need to purge his youthful obsessions.

pretty much. Zappa's a great artist when you're 16, because his sneering attitude towards everything appeals to teens and you've got the patience to see how all 70+ albums link together. Good post frogbs. I find Zappa’s anti censorship court case videos to be pretty engaging and eat the music definitely gave a whole picture of who Zappa was. Most fascinating was his early avant garde 60s talk show appearance where he uses bicycles for noise generation. Even in this first snapshot of a young Zappa it was clear he decided to burden himself as a misunderstood genius who got laughs from the audience but in his mind it was all business- serious stuff. In every era it seems he strived to find new ways to piss audiences off but in the end of his career he tried to become varese but instead made cutesy avant-garde music. The worst kind

i love the b-side of his seventh! i think ilx got me into it. i can't remember though.

there's also a great king biscuit flower hour release where he jams for 12 minutes on "fly like an eagle" - this was like three years before he released it

ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:14 (seven years ago)

even more than the sneering what gets me about zappa is the horrible _sound_ of his '80s stuff. when he tries to do reggae (which he did a _lot_ in the '80s) it's the shittiest reggae i have ever heard in my life. people tell me "drowning witch" is actually a brilliantly composed song but i can't tell because it sounds fucking monstrously sterile. and that was played by a live band! eventually he started moving on to the synclavier and committed all sorts of new timbral atrocities.

I have like seven Club 8 albums and they’re basically the meeting point between Good Humor-era Saint Etienne and Radio Dept, which seems to be ILM catnip, and yet it’s crickets around here every time I mention them.

omar little, Saturday, 7 April 2018 00:41 (seven years ago)

tho I they fall definitely into the “obscure” rather than “despised” category, so maybe not relevant here.

― omar little,

About 10 years ago I bought a couple of albums by them (Nouvelle and the self-titled) after someone compared them to Saint Etienne and early Cardigans. They didn't do a lot for me. Is there another album you'd recommend giving a go? I probably didn't try hard enough with them and I'd be happy to give them another go.

I kinda wish early Steve Miller Band would have gone even further psych space rock. The few tracks he does like that are killer.

earlnash, Saturday, 7 April 2018 03:28 (seven years ago)

I’d try with either Spring Came, Rain Fell or The Boy Who Couldn’t Stop Dreaming — both pretty great. Above the City is less twee and more moody Europop influenced. Also great!

omar little, Saturday, 7 April 2018 03:30 (seven years ago)

I'm a big Doves fan too. I thought the first two albums were really good. These days Some Cities is the one I go back to the most. I was worried they'd put out a whole album of anthemic songs like Pounding, but there's some really weird stuff on there. I remember there being a feeling they were going to become huge with that fourth album (kind of like Elbow had broken through the previous year). Sadly, it wasn't a great album. There definitely weren't any obvious hits on it. At least there wasn't anything as tedious as One Day Like This. That song that killed my enthusiasm for Elbow instantly.

I had a look and I have a load of songs from Club 8's The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming and The People's Record albums in my mp3 library, so evidently I remembered about Club 8 about 8 years ago then forgot about them again.

I think it was Strangely Beautiful from 2003 that would've been what I was listening to with my wife, that was the year anyway and some of the song titles are familiar. I should download that again.

There's a fairly used Dire Straits thread here, but yeah them. Despite the horrific Les Boys, the 3rd and 4th albums are wondeful.

Doll By Doll/Jackie Leven. I just searched and Marcello started a thread when he died but it got about six responses. Anyways, DBD were an amazing and cathartic live act and their albums stand up. Later I saw Leven solo once, he talked more than he played but was a brilliant raconteur so that was okay.

I like tyler but have never felt any more than a passing desire to delve into The Dead, which has usually be rebuffed by some wack rhythm sectioning.

Re: Joseph Arthur

i only know his 'the the vs merz' styled debut, 'big city secrets' : but its a bloody wonderful album.
not followed anything else since as i was under the impression that sonically things became a lot less interesting.
happy to be proved wrong.
― mark e

Big City Secrets does have a sound of its own, mostly thanks to the production, and I often wondered if this is perhaps mostly attributed to Real World/people other than Joseph Arthur himself. He performs several songs from that album live every now and then, most live versions sound quite different from the album versions.
I love that debut too, but you might be disappointed if you're looking for a similar sound in his later work.
That's not to say that he got less interesting sonically, as he's experimented a lot and he's always done a lot with layered loops. This is especially a treat live, when he gets his music together with enough loops so he can swap his guitar for a paintbrush and will paint while singing.

For a very versatile, interesting and in my opinion totally amazing record, I'd recommend 'Redemption City'. (It was released on vinyl and digital format only, but especially the digital album should still be easy to get via his webstore.)

scott seward, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:48 (seven years ago)

Most of the Lenola talk here looks to be at least 13 years old or so. Good to know there's still fans out there. They really hold up!

Evan, Saturday, 14 April 2018 13:53 (seven years ago)

this is easily one of my top ten or top twenty favorite rock albums of the '90s (non-metal division) and i have never met anyone who liked it as much as me. i've played my crappy CD copy year in and year out since 1991. i'm sure there are people who like it, but i've never heard anyone talk about it in any rave review critical way. maybe there was an issue of Mojo where they gave it its due. i think its a work of art as an album experience.

That Hypnotics record is one I’ve never wearied of, and along the same lines, Gallon Drunk. Loud rock with Elmer Bernstein/Mingus horn charts pushing it over the top is the best sound. The Saints’ Eternally Yours, too.
