i know i probably shouldn't start a new thread for their new album on here but i'm so excited about this that i did it anyways. i still think AM is, by far, the best thing they have ever done so yeah i'm excited.

the tracklist is v entertaining. i loved am. i'm in

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 April 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

they are coming to Los Angeles and playing at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and tix are really expensive. i didn't know about this new album, now i have to go to that show. the only other show i saw there was Spoon's They Want My Soul tour and it was a very memorable night.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 April 2018 01:39 (six years ago) link

Their last album was their best, but I'm American. Surprising longevity too -- my college students still know every song licensed for commercials. And I hum "Fireside" and "Why'd You Only Call Me..." every couple months.

I was lukewarm on these guys for years until Humbug got its claws in me, which is still my favourite album of theirs although I've warmed to some of their other tracks. It's funny how their debut continues to get all the praise when it's comfortably their worst LP. I'll be giving this a listen.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 12 April 2018 16:40 (six years ago) link

it's funny, looking back on the reviews for AM and seeing the comments now i guess there was/is a lot of love for that album, but i've always been under the impression it was the point where a lot of people stopped being on board for them.

austinb, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:08 (six years ago) link

personally, listening back to it now and remembering both the reason i didn't dig it that much back then (feels a bit rigid, kinda underwritten) but also have a lot more time for it for what it does do well

austinb, Friday, 13 April 2018 02:09 (six years ago) link

not among 21-year-old Miamians! I saw them in 2010 for the Humbug tour in a half-empty auditorium; in 2014 they sold it out.

hah, not surprised there—when AM came out, Alex Turner became the unofficial face of a lot of music tumblr. guess i remember a lot more critical backlash than there actually was, although i still think that NME 10 was a bit much

I've noticed the usual suspects are vomiting their snark about the return of this band elsewhere, but it's great to know they're going to put out some new stuff.

Reviews suggest this is a Turner solo album by any other name, 2 songs don't feature the drummer or the bassist. James 'Klaxons' Righton features too supposedly.

I'm fine with the idea of the occasional Arctic Monkeys track without drums, even though Helders is as integral to the sound of the band as Turner is. James Righton, though!?!

it's just really difficult to take seriously a band who perform songs about Real Britain when they've been outed as massive tax dodgers, if people have fallen out of love with them it will be more to do with that than anything they've done musically

Perform songs about real Britain? When do they do that?

piscesx, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 10:51 (six years ago) link

this is how my day started yesterday. i actually had an opportunity to buy tickets when there were some left. my friends were a little slow on letting me know that they wanted to go. by the time they said yes, it was too late. yesterday i decided to look at tickets on my phone and it said there are tickets on sales. i went to buy two tickets and it said, not available try a different quantity. i ran to my computer and tried to buy tickets, it said sold out. so then i had a debate with myself. do i want to go to this concert by myself? i think i still have this ticket on my phone but need to make up my mind. i'm thinking, well i'm probably too late but let's see if it will let me buy just one ticket. it went to the payment page and i was freaking out. i guess i'm going after all.

Did they rise from the sludge and break through the glass ceiling looking better than ever?

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 6 May 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

https://i.imgur.com/tzGxGbR.jpg

i'm not the biggest Arctic Monkeys fan to begin with. i bought their debut album back in the day but only followed them with their singles for the next few albums. when i heard "Do You Wanna Know?" i ended up buying AM. i fell head over hills for that album to become a newer fan of these guys. i did miss the opening band and this place was packed. got there when they played "Arabella" and it was perfect. this band is at the top of their game. they didn't talk to the audience other then "Hollywood you're so dark" but had them in the palm of their hands. the band was on point all night where it felt like they have been on the road for a bit, which is not true, this was their third show for this new album. the AM tracks stuck out of me, they seem to have a groove to them that is sort of missing from their other songs. not to take anything away from the other songs as they were also a lot of fun. "You're So Dark", "Knee Socks," "One for the Road" and "R U Mine?" along with the other two massive songs from AM were absolute highlights. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" was puck rock with everyone jumping up and down. had a blast last night as that was a special night. go see them when they come to town if you are interest, you will not be disappointed.

Batphone is as-good-as unlistenable. Seems they are trending on Twitter in the UK because people hate it so much, it's The Last Jedi all over again.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:50 (six years ago) link

Living with it for almost a week, I'm convinced half of it meanders in search of melodies that Turner's piano and voice can't support, but it was ever thus with these dudes.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 12:51 (six years ago) link

the melodies are a little oblique and ungiving sometimes ("golden trunks" seems to go in reverse every time it alights on something pleasurable to hear)... but i'm pretty sure that's why it's good

this record brings up a lot of weird comparison points for me. like i feel like jellyfish might've made this record had they traded in paisley overalls and wide-eyed awe for impenetrably dark sunglasses and ennui

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:38 (six years ago) link

Turner's always traded on ennui, though, right? This time he's shooting for the rotter vibe of This is Hardcore, and I'm still wondering if he's cramming too many words onto rickety melody lines.

I realized yesterday that I had a terrible download. The stream sounds much better.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 May 2018 13:42 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 11 May 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link

Re 'MOJO reading lads' Mojo had the first interview before the album came out and the band did a playlist of influences for 'em (Dion, Nino Rota, David Axelrod, Gainsbourg..) so anyone reading Mojo knew before anyone else that the record wasn't a rock album. It's more for 30 and 40-something types Mojo. Lads are more 'LadBible' these days.

piscesx, Friday, 11 May 2018 15:01 (six years ago) link

Was able to finally finish this up. Not what I'm sure anymore was explaining from Arctic Monkeys. I'm sure fans are going to hate it. I think Brad said it was a lounge record and that it is. Not sure what to think really but don't see myself playing this a lot this year as it's not my style.

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link

Good for them though to try something completely different

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

Isn't the lounge singer thing intentional though, as in it's part of the concept of the record? Or so I read.

Anyway I listened to the four tracks that seem to be getting the most love/attention on this thread and liked them. Not sure I need to hear the rest but yeah, good on yer, Alex.

Jeff W, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link

He's impressed me almost every step of the way. I remember when the first album came out and there was all this Brit-pop hype, with him the next Ray Davies. I was doubtful, but ... the album was good. Then I saw them live behind that record and they were great. Then I totally tuned out except for whatever I heard on the radio, and what I did hear ... was pretty good, too! And this one is really good as well, very Pulp/Richard Hawley/David Bowie, which is nothing I ever would have expected from him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

I haven't heard the album but "4 out of 5 stars" is really good. Lounge lizard Bowie vibes.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:26 (six years ago) link

I haven’t listened to this yet, and I’m glad when albums turn out well however it’s done. Yet it’s kind of emperor’s new clothes that no one is saying why so many musicians have gone synth or changed their songwriting style to be less distinctive. The musicians can’t explain it themselves, they’ll get attacked from both sides.

Maybe the public might care a little more with some awareness of what streaming does in specific cases, more so than just hearing about homogenization in general. That’s too ambiguous — it’s 101 that arguments need specific examples to demonstrate the point.

Franki, Saturday, 12 May 2018 21:38 (six years ago) link

This band has not gone synth or gotten less distinctive.

Muso question: is all the melodic bass stuff a bass or a baritone guitar?

the Rolling Stone review is pretty negative which fine but quotes like this make your wonder did you actually listen? because it's clearly talking about restaurant reviews

"But the meandering LP can't bear the weight of the man at the piano's indulgences; "Four Out of Five" literally riffs off music magazine star ratings"

such a gluey, borderline offputting listen at first. but "american sports" was the first for me to burst open and spill out a load of hooks and glorious bits and pieces - the second verse is wedged in my head.

flipping through the lyrics, i can see where the accusations of smugness come from, but shocked at how he's really scratching a top tier itch and the bowie, walker, mark e smith, nick cave comparisons are not necessarily hyperbole. shocked, i say.

matt h, Sunday, 13 May 2018 16:05 (six years ago) link

everything about this album invites massive scrutiny of the lyrics, which is, ceteris paribus, a commendable ambition for a guy in his position. I'm not gonna comment on whether they hold op or not, but did MES ever do that in such a way? or even Bowie? You could argue that they both contiuously had other, both implicit and explicit narratives underpinning and driving forward their records.

This record is certainly much harder to pin down than any of their previous work which can make it sound like A. Turner really doesn't know what it's about. That he perhaps stumbled on to an core idea of this distant, enigmatic, dreamlike aesthetic, and put himself, or rather distorted and reshaping perceptions of himself in there and kept feeding it with lyrical imagery and wit.

Either way, I don't really know what to make of it but I find it appealing so far and certainly not ready to write it off.

Same. Tried to avoid (stupid name, lol-england lads etc, feared an even worse than Kaiser Chiefs rip-off) but I have to admit the Bowie references are making me slightly curious. If someone throws in a 'not unlike late 60s Scott Walker'-ref I will have to bite the bullet.

Took my car to the garage today. The loan car didn't have a CD player (and I wasn't organised enough to have taken an MP3 player). Ended up flicking through various radio channels including Radio 6. I'm getting some Gainsbourg soundtrack (his work with Colombier, Vannier) vibes. Not as great as those, but very nice vibes they are. I'm also not familiar with their previous albums, apart from a single now and then. Record store owner made me listen to the debut last weekend, which I found quite wearing to listen to tbh. Much prefer the new album.

On my third listen to this album now. Before I heard this album, Humbug was my favourite album of theirs, and now that I've heard this album it still is. This album isn't too far behind at the moment, though! When I first put it on, I was a bit thrown, but by the time 'American Sports' kicked in I was pretty much sold. It's something quite different for them and I really hope it pisses off the fans who wrongly think they never bettered their first album.

"I was going to the art supply store quite often".

"I became consumed by that. Getting up in the middle of the night and delving in. I kept calling it the lobby model, like the idea that sometimes those things sit in the lobbies of the buildings they represent - like in The Shining, with the miniature hedge maze in the lobby, and he's looking in there and then he sees the people are in there".

'Batphone' is pretty much the only track that I find to be not as good as the others. At the moment, anyway. They're maturing really nicely as a band though, and they eventually won me over which is quite something given that 12 years ago I thought they were fucking awful.

The rolling stone issue in which the band was recently featured gave the album 2 stars.

Review:

“The Arctic Monkeys have come a long way since the stun-gun punk of their 2006 hit “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”. A really long way. Their first LP in five years is a lounge-rock odyssey set in a casino piano bar on the moon. Frontman Alex Turner lands somewhere between glum-glam Bowie and Dean Martin on tracks like “Star Treatment” where he croons, “I’m a big name in deep space, ask your mates/But golden boy’s in bad shape.”
It’s not without a certain vermouth-zonked charm. But after a while in Turner’s wee small hours, you may want to hop the next shuttle back to Earth.

i somehow haven't posted on this thread yet, but this is obviously fantastic. "four stars out of five" is the obvious standout, but i'm really digging the final two tracks right now. "batphone" has my favorite piano part on the record and i love the slinky guitar and the chintzy synth. and "the ultracheese" is a beautiful country torch song, reminds me a bit of conway twitty and a bit of "on top of old smoky"

I think a lot of fans of the album might appreciate this from The Last Shadow Puppets, Alex Turner wrote this one on his own and it features no Miles Kane vocal either so it's essentially a solo song

This album is still sounding great to me - the only track that I'm not keen on is 'Batphone', which doesn't seem to have grown on me all that much. Still, the rest of the album is fantastic.

album reminds me of pulp this is hardcore a lot

i love this record but sometimes the vocals get in the way for me, after a whole record it is a little wearying..first half is absolutely solid tho and stellar closer

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 April 2019 23:56 (five years ago) link

still think AM is their best but this album is also really good. there was a point where i couldn't stop listening to it and not a lot of albums do that to me anymore. this concert was also really, really good. it will be interesting what they do next.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 00:00 (five years ago) link

I think the first half is really strong, it peaks with 'Four Out of Five', and then the second half isn't as good as the first but has a couple of highlights ('She Looks Like Fun' and 'The Ultracheese') - The part where 'One Point Perspective' segues into 'American Sports' is still my favourite part of the album, and I have no time at all for 'Batphone'. I played the shit out of the album when it was first released, and while I still love the fact that it rubs fans of their earlier work up the wrong way, I think AM and Humbug are better albums.

I don't mind the drums but *that* bass sound has been everywhere these last few years. I've seen Alex Turner talking about trying to get the bass to sound like Histoire de Melody Nelson.

What's up with the drums, do you think?

piscesx, Saturday, 30 January 2021 09:18 (three years ago) link

It's some sort of 70s ish flat, low reverb, fat, dry kind of snare that would be the 'warm' setting on production software or something, idk. I actually let this album pass me by until I heard their versions of these songs on their Albert hall live album which are even better than on the album.

I think AT is my musical man crush. I love how he sings on this.
