Reuters: Kanye West publicist pressed Georgia election worker to confess to bogus fraud charges

Weeks after the 2020 election, a Chicago publicist for hip-hop artist Kanye West traveled to the suburban home of Ruby Freeman, a frightened Georgia election worker who was facing death threats after being falsely accused by former President Donald Trump of manipulating votes. The publicist knocked on the door and offered to help.

The visitor, Trevian Kutti, gave her name but didn't say she worked for West, a longtime billionaire friend of Trump. She said she was sent by a "high-profile individual," whom she didn't identify, to give Freeman an urgent message: confess to Trump's voter-fraud allegations, or people would come to her home in 48 hours, and she'd go to jail.

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Friday, 11 February 2022 23:20 (two years ago) link

It is disappointing, and he's grown more disappointing as a human being for quite a while now. Kanye was always a bit of a buffoon, but at least for a good six or seven years, he still felt like a hometown hero, and it was flat out awesome to see him grow by leaps and bounds from The College Dropout to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Beginning with Watch the Throne, I thought his ego and missteps finally overwhelmed his music and since then it's been a continuing downward slide. I have no problem going back to his records from 2004-2010. He at least understood when he was called out for being an ass. I hope that part of him is still there somewhere, even if his own records no longer impress outside of the lyric department.

birdistheword, Friday, 11 February 2022 23:39 (two years ago) link

is this going to be his "DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE" thread?

in that case, i will say this: he's damn good at being a villain. because yikes. this feels especially shitty, even for him.

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Friday, 11 February 2022 23:53 (two years ago) link

It's completely shitty and he's become a complete shit. I'm not buying anymore of his work (whether it's his records or seeing his shows) and outside of that post, I virtually never talk about him to anyone anymore. But I hope he changes - it's not likely, but sometimes people surprise you, and if he ever does repent or whatever, I hope it lasts and it hasn't gotten past the point where he's done things that can never be forgiven. (I'm sure it's already past that point for plenty of people.)

birdistheword, Saturday, 12 February 2022 00:10 (two years ago) link

I think his problem is, he believes he's in his repentance phase already.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 12 February 2022 00:12 (two years ago) link

I don't doubt it. I mean, the guy has his own church now, doesn't he?

Anyway, this is why I didn't talk about him anymore - I'm going to go back to ignoring any news about him, pretend he's done as a recording artist, and if he proves me wrong someday, I'll gladly eat crow.

xp it probably encourages Kanye to continue being a clown. Awhile back (I think 2016?) he had what seemed like a Twitter meltdown and people were wondering if he was really having a breakdown. But more than few people were reluctant to believe that, especially coming from a monstrously narcissistic publicity whore, and indeed Kanye knew exactly what he was doing.

It's no different than Trump or all the like minded nuts. So...

are you joking?? that's his most dogshit song . I'm taking Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime Vol 1 & 2, Streets is Watching, Blueprint. I will never in my life forget seeing the Dead Presidents video on BET (the original single version not the one on Reasonable Doubt), I got goosebumps, was so eerie and he was flowing like no one ever had. my god, like Brooklyn's Finest? Coming of Age? like he spit nothing but classics for a decade

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 13 February 2022 06:38 (two years ago) link

So it's okay not to love Jay-Z as long as I don't like hip-hop. Makes sense.

In all seriousness, on a technical level, he's impressive, but even when the substance is there (especially before it became more and more about name-checking and marketing god knows what), it didn't sound like a great record. That's one reason why WTT was especially disappointing to me - having Kanye (presumably at his peak) producing an entire album for/with Jay-Z seemed to be good reason to be optimistic.

The catalogue of idiocy goes way, way back. There were warning signs but I (speaking for myself) wanted to believe the man was essentially better than that.

Specifically: whatever he said about reading being stupid struck (and still strikes) me as dunderheaded. Regardless of rather of not that is said with personal sincerity, why say it, especially when you’re aware of how many people - and how many other African Americans, in particular - look up to you?

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 13 February 2022 15:16 (two years ago) link

frogbs, Sunday, 13 February 2022 15:20 (two years ago) link

You could tell, yes - and there was stuff on that record that was super gross even back then.

But in 2004, he didn't have the power and influence on mass culture he has today, and the grossness was not out of line with a lot of what was happening in the genre. Yes, frogbs, it was fun and it was new. And we were younger.

Sorry if I'm coming across as antagonistic here. The continued popularity and veneration of this guy is something I think about too much, so I have strong feelings and opinions. But will pull back and just follow the thread.

@upper mississippi sh@kedown, thanks man. FWIW, I totally get that my lack of enthusiasm for Jay-Z's entire body of work is a minority opinion. Beyond his massive popularity, he's got his share of critical support and IIRC has at least two comfortable spots in the upper echelons of Rolling Stone's last album poll. I don't want to get in any heated arguments about Jay-Z, but I'll listen to anyone making the case for him. It would be great to hear exactly what his biggest supporters hear in his best work and be tremendously grateful for that - I hope that happens someday.

I thought Noah's joke was hilarious, but a one-liner isn't going to hold up as a complete, much less nuanced, argument.

I feel like the complaints I personally heard about Kanye really started with Late Registration and ballooned even before Graduation came out - I remember right before that album came out in 2007 I was getting pushback from friends who weren't interested in seeing him because of all the baggage he had. My feeling then was that it hadn't compromised his music too much, that it was actually interesting and entertaining to see a gifted but egotistical jackass struggle with those lesser elements about himself. He also felt like a guy who was struggling to engage with the world despite himself.

I do agree with the theory that Kanye losing his mother was probably the beginning of the end, there's no denying how devastating that was. In retrospect, it did lead to a remarkable stage in his career. I still remember the shock of seeing him break down on the following tour whenever he tried to do "Hey Mama" or something in tribute to her. (I actually braced for the same thing to happen when he paid tribute at the Grammy's, but he had it together by then.) Then he had that break-up and 808's and it was shocking to see the guy in pieces like that. IIRC he'd go on talk shows looking depressed, with shades and less grooming...kind of like Joaquin Phoenix's fake breakdown but this seemed for real. That album's only gotten better with age because when are we ever going to see him that exposed and vulnerable again?

birdistheword, Sunday, 13 February 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link

(to clarify, I meant 808's remains compelling in terms of the humility and perseverance through inner struggles, not for the sheer voyeurism)

But to be honest, a lof of old rap doesn't hold up for me - if I was gonna listem to hip-hop from 1996-2009 or whatever I'd probably want a long playlist, not albums. This genre evolves so fast. (There are exceptions that do hold up, of course.)

This isn't *quite* the same, but it could be like watching a film of a favorite actor before they went off the deep end, like "remember when they were a young and charming idealist hoping to make it rather than the spoiled asshole they've become now?" Bittersweet, but regardless, I'm sure the first installment will be good, where Kanye is literally knocking on doors and shopping his demos to people who just smile politely and send him on his way. It's the type of thing every artist has talked about in their bio or doc, but it's crazy when you can actually SEE it.

Looked it up, guess it isn't a quatrain (I hear it as ABCA, it's just AA). It's the one you would expect about Deepak Chopra and 2Pac, I remember listening to the album for the first time on my blastbox riding to a friend's party and I nearly rode off the road and got into an accident when I heard that line.

It’s insane the amount of footage they had for a yet to be famous person. It’s interesting to see the behind curtains of the business in the 90’s.

Funny that not even on those early days Kanye seems very likable. Funniest part is Kanye playing “all falls down” and rapping it in front of different “Roc a fella” employees who just want to keep doing their jobs.

i can't imagine anyone on this thread wants to argue on behalf of kanye's lyricism at any point in his career

i mean, i sure will lol. his lyrics were always kind of goofy & he went for some corny rhymes but he was also clever, relatable, and a strong storyteller. there was lots of humor and depth in his early writing... which is one of the reasons he became a superstar. the idea that kanye was always a bad lyricist is blatant revisionist history to me. he's obviously not a great rapper in the q tip sense or whatever but you can't tell me that songs like "spaceship," "drive slow," "touch the sky" that tell his life story vividly w/ a strong POV are bad lyrically, and i'm putting aside stuff like "breathe in breathe out" which is consciously "dumb" but overall intelligently written and unique perspective wise while also still being pretty funny.

at a certain point the fun & the cleverness got sapped from his music and it turned more into bully pulpit esque sermonizing or all the "semen/morgan freeman" level rhymes w/ none of the actual "mayonnaise colored benz i push miracle whips" punchlines qua punchlines. he was still able to carry it w/ stuff like '808s & heartbreaks' and 'yeezus' bcuz of the production or concise new angles of the albums but now we're all the way in the opposite direction where the albums are overlong, he's stuck on the same production style & the lyrics are genuinely terrible.

trying to think of the last time i was impressed with his lyricism…maybe “30 hours”? even that had unfinished bars and a good minute of unrehearsed riffing at the end

you can't tell me that songs like ..."touch the sky" that tell his life story vividly w/ a strong POV are bad lyrically

Baby, I'm goin' on an aeroplane
And I don't know if I'll be back again
Sure enough, I sent the plane tickets
But when she came to kick it, things became different
Any girl I cheated on, sheets I skeeted on
Couldn't keep it at home, thought I needed a Nia Long
I'm tryin' to right my wrongs
But it's funny them same wrongs helped me write this song

i mean you can pick bad lyrics from anybody on almost any track but shrug.emoji

a lot of the "fun and cleverness" of kanye's rapping for the first few years is so deeply enmeshed with misogyny and crass bullshit that, as that became synonymous with his overall brand, they've soured and aged phenomenally poorly for me. And that should frankly be true for anybody! It's hard to enjoy workout plan these days! which i mean, okay i'm not gonna bitch about those same issues with cam but cam is a far better rapper and lyricist and I'm not gonna bitch about that with geto boys but scarface is a far better rapper and lyricist and i'm not gonna bitch about that with david banner but etc etc.

if i have any point to make here it's that i don't think i've ever really liked kanye the rapper? Certainly not since i got past thirty. He can be bearable at times but i am at a loss to think of a single song in his entire catalogue where either his rapping or his lyrics are the best thing about that song. Any nominations?

I have liked (and sometimes still like quite a lot when he's working with other people) kanye the producer. "George bush doesn't care about black people" was a moment but his laboratory remake as a post-modernist product appears to have done genuine creative and psychic damage and engendered as toxic a public persona as any pop star i can think of short of r kelly. It's odd to me that people wanna talk about his current work so much or, frankly talk about him so much period but that's the magic of the everlasting fifteen minutes that comes from adding money into the mix. as matt has said numerous times and i agree, it just makes me sad.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 February 2022 01:00 (two years ago) link

you can cherry pick cringe kanye lyrics from lots of places, i mean the entire mythos of his life story is that barely anybody working w/ him in the music industry thought he was good at rapping and he had to conjure his own superstardom from thin air. so this is well trodden territory. but i'll just say that i think the first verse of "touch the sky" if we're gonna look at that song tells a unique personal story w/ wit, humor, detail, and realtability in a way that to me has always scanned as great songwriting despite him always having a penchant for leaning into clunkers, but of course that's part of his mythos too, he's not afraid of embarrassment and he believes he can sell anything thru inhuman confidence. even as i've grown to have zero use for kanye the musician and don't really feel like listening to much of his old music bcuz i've been there done that many times and there's lots of other music to be listening to in the world i never had the thought that he wasn't a great writer for a large stretch of his career

[Verse 1: Kanye West]
Back when they thought pink Polos would hurt the Roc
Before Cam got the shit to pop
The doors was closed
I felt like Bad Boy's street team: I couldn't work the locks
Now let's go, take 'em back to the plan
Me and my momma hopped in that U-Haul van
Any pessimists, I ain't talk to them
Plus I ain't have no phone in my apart-a-ment
Let's take 'em back to the club
Least about an hour I stand on line
I just wanted to dance, I went to Jacob an hour
After I got my advance, I just wanted to shine
Jay favorite line: "Dawg, in due time!"
Now he look at me, like, "Damn, dawg! You where I am!"
A hip-hop legend
I think I died in that accident, ‘cause this must be Heaven

xxp i mean those are okay bars. They're fine? but are his lyrics or rapping there your favorite part of that song? relistening it to it now, he's clearly in his best voice at this stage in his career but even so the ad libs are distracting and uninspired. the reason i remember touch the sky at all is because of what just blaze did with curtis mayfield.

at no point has kanye's "you can hate me now" navelgazing gravitas appealed to me as either an origin story or as a meaningful wellspring. i find his sense of humor puerile and his lyricism functional to clunky. as far as the behind the curtain peeks he offers I mean he DOES know all these guys so it's like aquaman rapping about hanging out with superman and okay, that has its moments but... i dunno?

The next month, Ye gave a concert at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta, to preview likely tracks on an impending album, “Donda.” Then he stayed. For several weeks, at a reported cost of a million dollars a day, he lived and recorded in the stadium. His accommodations were both minimal and imperial: he slept in a narrow bed in the corner of a small, windowless, harshly lit room of painted cinder blocks, in a building that seats seventy thousand people, with a roof that can open to form a circle against the sky.

What the hell.... dude's straight up crazy. This whole article is insanity!

but people see those outer space battles onscreen. you can point to where that money went. Kanye's version of that is "what if I bring the same tools I'd use in a studio to a big stadium." like if he needs to track a marching band like Fleetwood Mac, you can have the stadium for a day, but I think making the case that there's any benefit to "we're making it in a stadium."

I don’t think the financial viability, or even the quality of the final artistic product, should matter. Musicians are responsible for all the costs of their albums. do people not remember the 'living in the stadium' thing happening? that was all very public at the time, he spent like 10 days living in the stadium and was showing up at soccer games held there during that time, wandering around wearing the same clothes as he'd had at the listening party (he was supposed to release the album a day after a listening party at the stadium but decided to just live there for a bit to 'finish it')

there wasn't any reason to make the album while living in the stadium - he was living & recording in the locker room, lol - no meaningful benefit to that at all. just another case of kanye being extremely impulsive and spending stupid amounts of money on a bad idea that didn't make any sense

do people not remember the 'living in the stadium' thing happening? that was all very public at the time, he spent like 10 days living in the stadium and was showing up at soccer games held there during that time, wandering around wearing the same clothes as he'd had at the listening party

...as dumb as it is, isn't that the thing "we could tell he spent the money on"?

this dude has been on some "my whole life is my art" thing for a while. Probably to him the "living in the stadium wearing my stupid mask" bit was as much of an artistic statement as whatever music he put on the Donda album.

i know the contractor in that article a little bit from record collector circles. i remember when he was posting stuff where it looked like he was sleeping rough in parking garages, dirty concrete rooms exposed exposed to the elements, showering with bottled water, etc, and thinking "man this dude has really fallen on some hard times, what a tragedy", and turns out he was actually living in one of the most expensive homes in America, absolutely unreal

i liked the part when Kanye takes him back to Nobu for a bath. imagine being told "you will remember this moment as long as you live, appreciate this generosity" and whats actually happening is that your boss is briefly allowing you to experience plumbing.

I don’t think the financial viability, or even the quality of the final artistic product, should matter. Musicians are responsible for all the costs of their albums. Taking a huge financial risk in pursuit of art is cool, in my opinion. When Coppola or Herzog or even Michael Cimino make fiscally reckless and impractical movies people make documentaries about them.

this is an absolutely absurd post

At that point his net worth was $1 billion plus from Gap and Adidas deals (they hadn't fallen through yet). We all might drop $10 mil on something in that moment.

he apparently talked about the stairs thing in a 2022 interview that's now gone from youtube

“I’m really big on outlawing stairs. And people will get into like arguments with me,” he said. “Everything should be designed like an old folks home because if we’re lucky, we’ll all turn to old folks.”

ufo, Thursday, 13 June 2024 13:34 (five months ago) link

It's funny when he actually stumbles onto a good point through his veil of stupidity, "universal design" with the aging in mind is absolutely a thing! And a thing we should be better at here! But "outlawing stairs" is not a part of it.

the art market got to this point 30 years ago cf damien hurst. wealth and power as subject is pretty well-worn. i guess with it spiraling into greater insanity in the last few decades someone's going to rush in to make art out of the grotesquerie. new extremes but very predictable imo.

Ye could become distracted. On the visit to Home Depot to buy tools, he’d spent an age trying to learn who had lined up plant pots in an appealing way. A sales assistant shrugged. “Well, I want their number,” Ye said, according to Saxon. “That’s how I want my plants to look.” (They didn’t buy any tools.)

This is the kind of eccentricity I like in artists/celebrities, is it really too much to ask that they keep doing this, but don't also go pro-trump, antisemite, anti-vax, etc?

yeah i'd definitely be spending money in irrational ways, but it would still be basically understandable as "luxuries of a dumb guy". has there ever been a celebrity who has spent this kind of money in order to aggressively make their life materially worse? like if everything worked out with that house like Kanye wanted, right now he'd be shitting into a hole in the floor in a tiny concrete cell within a larger windowless concrete box, having spent $60m for the privilege. I know weirdo tech billionaires sometimes get way into ultra-ascetic lifestyles and sensory deprivation and stuff, but whatever urge Kanye was following seems like a pretty different thing from that

not anymore. what i appreciated about kanye in the pass was his confessionalism. he was vulnerable and messy, boastful and regretful, filled with contradictions. he reminded me of robert lowell, as ridiculous as that might sound to you, and i love robert lowell.

anyway, none of this is true of kanye now. politically, he has embraced the idiotic fever dreams of the alt right, and creatively his work has been hard, flat, and mean. (music and design). there is a word for his sensibility, and that word is totalitarian. i wrote this article about it.
