Some guidelines:
- song poll : 50 songs per ballot
- movie poll : 5 movies
- ballots due 27 June by end of day Hawaii time

Probably I am missing things, if there are other fun subpolls go ahead and suggest them. I will try to do the rollout promptly on 28-30 June as I will be following the King to Germany the next day and won't be able to be online much for a few weeks thereafter.

i have no business voting in this, but i'm really looking forward to the rollout. would love to learn some more about the king

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 June 2018 17:07 (seven years ago)

I don't really have any business running this! I starting listening to Elvis in the early 90s because I thought """"he was the original punk"""" and then a bit later I was like "Viva Las Vegas" is the best song ever & it was all that 90s irony where your tongue starts in cheek and then by the end you actually love it.

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 16 June 2018 17:18 (seven years ago)

do they still play "An American Trilogy" during the laser show at Stone Mountain? dang, that was a moment where I felt genuine "southern pride" despite being a carpetbagger & a latino who the yee-hawers would probably have loved to lynch. but Elvis bellows while Lee rides off at Appomattox and I'm in tears, yee-hawing too.

I got the Amazing Grace compilation in college (same day I first heard Aretha’s, coincidentally), and the ‘70s tracks in particular floored me. In addition to fronting one of the best bands of the ‘70s, his voice was at it’s absolute peak.

Lobbying hard for the songs on He Touched Me, especially this take on Andraé Crouch’s “I’ve Got Confidence”:

Can Tomorrow Is A Long Time still be considered a Sway? It's kind of famous now. (for those unfamiliar, that's a relatively obscure track that places unusually high, named after the Rolling Stones poll where Sway finished 4.)

His cover of You Gave Me A Mountain is some all-time peak 70’s elvis imo. It’s a crushingly beautiful song as it is from Marty Robbins, but Elvis takes it to the summit

This one from Vegas Jan 26 1972 is my fave (the whole show is great)

One of the very best lesser-known Elvis songs, from the late 60s Memphis sessions. This could be my single favorite Elvis vocal perormance and is a lock for my top 5.

This is beautiful. Will probably make my ballot.

When watching the recent Elvis doc, I was reminded of how powerful the octave change is in this song — his voice was never better than in the ‘70s, and he knew exactly how to exploit every nuance:

Never Been To Spain is so bomb.

His gospel music is my other new love as an adult. Mum used to clean the house to it when I was a kid & I thought it was so uncool but now it just sounds like true devotion to me.

All his gospel stuff is great but when he grew into his voice it was a whole new level

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2018 02:21 (seven years ago)

I’ve never listened to any of Elvis’s gospel stuff. Maybe I shoul, but I’ll wait till after I’ve turned in my ballot.

i went tonight and yes they played the song. it was so nice to hear Elvis singing out in a big open lawn like that. for visuals they had a civil war section with lots of empty landscapes & explosions and zero rebel flags. during the song's triumphant ending they used animation to have the laser confederate generals on the mountain come to life and then break their swords. it was very surreal.

before this they had a bunch of Georgia songs: "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles, "I Feel Good" by James Brown, "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard, etc. the displays included portraits of the artists so at some point there was a 50 foot laser Little Richard on the side of the mountain.

when they played "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, they had fireballs cued up. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" was the highlight of the show & the one laser show/song combo you need to see. we left soon after (& before the ridiculously slow national anthem).

If I manage to put together what feels like a substantial ballot to me, “Burning Up” will definitely be on it. From my limited received knowledge about Elvis, I’ve always gotten the feeling that it was one of the songs that his more rockist fans loathed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jTbfvsqXZQ

I keep coming back to this one, a nice rocking make-over of a Bob Wills tune.

I've got my ballot down to about 133 tracks now and it's surprising how many of them are songs associated with other artists.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

re "songs associated with other artists" I was trying to think of a covers side poll that would work here but while there are songs where Elvis' version is the "definitive" one (Viva Las Vegas, Burning Love, etc) there are plenty of others not so clearly "owned" (even An American Trilogy). so I scrapped the idea.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 18 June 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)

As far as overlooked soundtrack tunes, I stan for “Ito Eats” from Blue Hawaii, in which Elvis closes the gap between rockabilly stutter and calypso syncopation:

Dan Worsley, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:02 (seven years ago)

Any chance you can extend the deadline a week or so? It’s been done many times before.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 22 June 2018 11:29 (seven years ago)

Definitely voting. My ballot currently sits at 55 songs; I just need to shed a few and determine the final order.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 22 June 2018 11:41 (seven years ago)

I can but my ability to do the rollout is dependent on this deadline, since I'll be traveling the first half of July. If Moka can handle the rollout, though, my steady availability during the rollout isn't so important. I can handle the compilation of ballots but if Moka can do the rollout, then an extension works for me.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 11:42 (seven years ago)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:02 (seven years ago)

Also I suggest a name change tonthe thread or a new one I just realized this is the voting thread! Maybe change it to

Or something like that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:04 (seven years ago)

Whenever the rollout can happen, the deadline should be just before that. Moka, if you can do it the second week of July, then we can advance the deadline to the end of the first week. I can do a rollout the third week of July or the second half of next week, otherwise not until the end of August for a week, then not again until 2019. This is why I don’t volunteer to do polls...

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 22 June 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)

I’m usually free this came out of the blue. I can do the rollout second week of July. Just send me the results when you have them.

No, the new deadline is July 5. I asked on the moderator board for a change but it was ignored. I just asked again.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 08:08 (seven years ago)

I thought 70s stuff would dominate my ballot, because that's what I actually listen to most, but as I'm sequencing it the 50s stuff keeps bobbing up to the top.

Have an I've voted bump.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 1 July 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)

Just got this email about an upcoming release. At first I thought, ok, cool, his gospel work is some of my favorite...hm, but only 14 songs...and...ugh, it’s like the Colonel never died:

Where No One Stands Alone, available August 10, celebrates the power and passion of Elvis Presley’s gospel music. The album features 14 of Elvis’ most treasured performances of inspirational music with newly-recorded instrumentation and a duet between Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 2 July 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)

Yeah, these new-backing-tracks compilations they've been doing the last couple of years are a fucking nightmare. It's crazy that they could do something as good and valuable as Elvis At Stax and then turn around, bend over, and squeeze this out.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 2 July 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

Yeah, some of the recent releases are totally amazing — A Boy From Tupelo one of the best ever — and then they realize, hey wait, some Elvis fans still buy tacky shit, let’s put out something seriously distasteful.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 2 July 2018 18:33 (seven years ago)

Here is a list of supposedly every song he recorded. I think there might be some duplicates in there as sometimes he recorded new versions for his movies and had slight variations in the title. The original list was extracted from this site ( www.biwa.ne.jp/~presley/song-aze.htm ). If you see any omissions let me know.

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 00:11 (seven years ago)

Or “Little Sister.”

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 00:11 (seven years ago)

Oh man, Where Do I Go From Here is a doozy. People don't sleep on that one.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 00:16 (seven years ago)

Moka’s link reminded to vote for “Moody Blue.”
Still debating “I Was The One,” which I learned about from Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 00:17 (seven years ago)

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 00:23 (seven years ago)

Brad C., Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:10 (seven years ago)

Holy tldr Moka

Found it weird that the movie the king is about whether Elvis is still relevant and asking various people of influence if he is. I mean cmon? Elvis will never not be dope

Ross, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:12 (seven years ago)

i'll be submitting a ballot.

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 17:45 (seven years ago)

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 17:50 (seven years ago)

I dunno before the 6th I guess? at 7 ballots now. it would be good to get somewhat higher so c'mon everybody let's take care of business

A little less conversation, a little more DRAFTING BALLOTS.

Elvis got drafted, so why can’t your ballots?

Xpost: thanks!

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 18:43 (seven years ago)

Re: Marie's the Name - all the songs Doc Pomus wrote for Elvis deserve to be on your ballot.

Ρεμπετολογια, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)

Will investigate...what are the top contenders there

I voted!

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 20:23 (seven years ago)

There’s a comp out there called Elvis 75- Good Rockin’ Tonight that is pretty much a superset of my ballot so far.

Uncle Redd in the Zingtime (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)

I'll be sending mine tomorrow!

Euler I'll be gone from this Saturday until July 19... I think you should accept ballots a little longer (at least until we have 20) to make time so I can help you with the images and the rollout! If you're busy just send me what you have so far and I'll receive the ballots and sum them. I suppose I can start the rollout on July 22 or 23.

If you can't just forward ballots or ask a mod to change mail to motelmoka at gmail

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

xp Doc Pomus wrote A Mess of Blues, Surrender, Little Sister, Suspicion, Marie's The Name, Viva Las Vegas for starters

Ρεμπετολογια, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

He also wrote some dreck for the Elvis movies but man, that half dozen there

Ρεμπετολογια, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:36 (seven years ago)

ok I would be happy to delay until July 19! I too am on the road now and won't get home until about the same day.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:52 (seven years ago)

I definitely want to vote (I think I'm one of the biggest Elvis fans on ILX) but doubt I'll get my 50 songs in an order I can live with by tomorrow. It's a bad time right now.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 21:57 (seven years ago)

good, then let's wait until Moka's back after mid July

Euler, Moka et al
Thanks for the welcome hiatus. I just put the second CD from 'The Searcher' soundtrack to try and prompt me to a ballot when I saw the latest posts. I was wondering how on earth i could rank 50 tracks and had settled on my favourite ranked no.1 (not telling yet) and then the rest unranked because, well, I've been listening to Elvis for over 40 years now and I can only think of one absolute stinker ('Confidence") that I would actively turn off. Living with the music for so long has meant going through ebbs and flows between the decades and genres. I was a fool for the early Sun and 50s RCA stuff as a kid and I still think there's not a harder '50s song than 'Hound Dog' hands down, but the post Army era brought out some beautiful studio work (musicians and technology). There are nuggets of gold all through the 60s prior to the American Studios 'return to form'. The NBC TV special black leather sets are still killer (The Searcher uses these as the fulcrum of the documentary). Then the 70s - long ago dismissed as trash, but as this thread has shown, there are some incredible performances. The 70s was where - I believe - Elvis took off the mask. Yes, some of the songs might have been easy, or less than rock 'n' roll, or songs that the Colonel wanted him to include on the album because of the publishing rights, but the songs prior to the 70s were never so personal (except for the 2 demos he did at Sun for his mother). The obvious autobiographical - Always on my mind / Separate ways - are well known but the two I linked to up thread - Pieces of my life / It's midnight - I don't think will get any love outside dedicated Elivis fandom, but in those two he opened his heart just a little bit wider. And the sad thing about 70s Elvis is that those gems and others such as 'there's a honky tonk angel'/ good time charlie's got the blues, 'elvis country', all the jungle room stuff, they are all overlooked in favour of the elvis-burger-vegas pantomime. And yet the two best Elvis films - that's the way it is and elvis on tour - are 70s and proud, and i'm rambling now, so i'll wind it up quickly and probably be the first person to have compared elvis to a stick of blackpool rock: wherever you break it along the linear line of his career you will always find something that (to me anyway) PROVES his gift of musicality (some born?, most learned, but all respected). I seriously don't know how to rank a top 3 of the sun recordings, let alone compare 'baby let's play house' with the effortless beauty of 'she's not you' or the hard tack of 'stranger in my own home town'. i thin i've just convinced myself that it's number 1 ranked and the other 49 unranked and let them sit where they sit with other people's ballots. so thanks euler for delaying this and thanks moka for being the catalyst. I can't wait for the roll out.

PS Euler, awesome photo pick for the start of thread. Can I suggest something like this once the rollout has left the building?

With Cooke, while his early career was as a gospel singer, I don't think he ever recorded gospel again after "Lovable."

the arrangement on ' mess of blues' is so good. loose and tight in equal measure. and beautiful tonal balance to the recording.

Yes that is definitely the worst Elvis song I've heard. It makes Do The Clam sound like Mystery Train.

just want to namedrop Orion in here. while thrift shopping i came upon this book

https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/222985478851_/Elvis-Presley-The-Most-Incredible-Elvis-Story.jpg

i believe it was self published by the author, or that she had some kind of regional deal, but author Gail (G.B. Giorgio, from Marietta GA i believe) had her first book pulled from distribution or something so the first third of the book is a conspiracy theory about publishers trying to silence her.

she puts forth the theory that Elvis faked his death and presents a lot of evidence in this book. the birth certificate and tombstone misspelling of Aaron (his twin brother's first name, he died young, but cast a mysterious shadow over the Presleys) and she talks about the Geraldo 20/20 episode and finally there is the public display, when they showed Elvis's corpse for a public memorial, his nose looks entirely different, his face is described as if he were a poorly made wax dummy.

not that i believe any of it, but it's all incredibly interesting lore. i think she wrote many books on the subject. the last chapter even features the transcription of a rare encounter with The King post-"death" in a Hawaii airport!

one of her theories included the singer Orion. i don't know much about Orion but this is very fascinating because she claimed he was Elvis in disguise, and if you look at Orion's first album, it has a coffin and is called "Reborn". he's actually pretty talented - he sounds like a really good Elvis impersonator.

in truth, Orion was singer Jimmy Ellis. that doesn't stop people from jumping to conclusions. from another youtube video:

Barb Delawder
@Tiffany16ization jimmy was not Elvis...jimmy was shot and killed on dec. 12, 1998 along with his ex- wife whien a robber came into his pawn shop in Alabama. there r rumors that jimmy may have been EP's half brother but there is no real proof. but they were 2 different men. jimmy just happened to sound like EP. Jimmy was born in Mississipi but his real mother took him to Alabama to an adoption agengcy where he was adopted at a very young age by the Ellis's.

Drafting ballot right now, just found via Wiki that all of these songs were recorded on 7 June 1970, released on Elvis Country. There were some really fertile sessions once he was reinvigorated after the 1968 special and before the Colonel's live touring treadmill kicked in:

Tomorrow never comes
Funny how time slips away
I really don't want to know
Faded love
I washed my hands in muddy waters

Hope I'm not the only one voting for Crawfish, Pocketful of Rainbows and Animal Instinct as they're pretty high on my ballot and deserve a place in his best songs.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 04:58 (seven years ago)

Animal Instinct is so underrated. Almost noone namedrops it when talking Elvis. It doesn't help that it was cut from one of his worst rated movies, Harum Scarum.
Hope it makes it because it's awesome and sounds like it should've been a James Bond theme, but in case it doesn't here's for your enjoyment:

I only sort of recently got into Elvis, so I still have a lot of blind spots in his discography and I'm sure that skewed my ballot a bit. I know I left off a number of deserving songs and have been second guessing it ever since I hit send.

Saw the Eugene Jarecki film today (which I had been mixing up with the other Elvis documentary until literally after it was over, when I got some clarification from a friend)--fascinating. The very pointed Trump element is definitely heavy-handed now and again, but not to the extent (for me, at least) that it ruins the film. Chuck D is excellent. Actually, I liked all three viewpoints on the cultural-appropriation question: Chuck D, Van Jones, and David Simon. Still have to see the other film.
