Rusted Root Neologisms

Well, our most popular song ever, “Send Me On My Way,” there’s a word in there that doesn’t make any rational sense. I think it’s “oombayseeyou.” And then the melody, “seemoobadeeyah.” I was in the process of coming up with lyrics, and it just sounded so good and felt so right that it had a meaning of its own that you couldn’t make better by making it a word. So I left it.

great, difficult poll

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 19 July 2018 13:46 (seven years ago)

Both are of immense personal importance to me and have become staples of my vernacular (as they have within the Roothead circles in which I travel). The feelings they each evoke are similar in intensity but vastly different in vibe. Each feeling is indescribable but, once felt, inseparable from my essential state of being.

Jesus Christ, this is a real thing. What have I done? I just sat through 4 full minutes of morbid fixation. Now I am desperately performing self-trepanation.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:10 (seven years ago)

Welcome to the Rust side, my friend.

Rusted was a collective of prophets. Even though this song was recorded many years ago, it's clearly about the glory of vaping synthetic weed.

The simple act of eating an orange can transport your senses to fantastic realms which your shackled physical form could never access otherwise.

Seemoobadeeyah.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:37 (seven years ago)

i have never heard this but based simply upon the quoted text and the youtube summary image i feel confident that i do not now, nor likely ever will, have the mental and physical fortitude to listen to it

BIG RICHARD ENERGY (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:40 (seven years ago)

(voted oombayseeyou obv)

BIG RICHARD ENERGY (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:40 (seven years ago)

I beg you to listen to it, my friend. You will be transmogrified by the Root, elevated to states of being you had never before dreamed of. What may have once sounded to you like the marble-mouthed scatting of a hippie burnout will morph into (tooooooooke) the ululations of a sage.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:50 (seven years ago)

look i'm a new dad i have a family now i can't be fucking around with powerful shit like this

BIG RICHARD ENERGY (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:54 (seven years ago)

I had a friend who was a Rusted Root fan in high school. We were driving around getting high and I was like "can we listen to something else? I really don't like the lyrics." And she was offended, like, "what's so bad about seemoobadeeyah?"

how's life, Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:04 (seven years ago)

it was a struggle but i went with "seemoobadeeyah"

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:05 (seven years ago)

lot to think about...in fact even the name itself is such a contradiction...Rusted Root...I mean roots are parts of plants, not made of metal, so how could a root rust?
I don't know, just a lot to think about....

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:08 (seven years ago)

listened to this song a couple times again just now, and i can't figure out which lyrics he's referring to cause all the lyrics kinda sound like "seemoobadeeyah" or "oombayseeyou"

ant banks and wasp (voodoo chili), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:16 (seven years ago)

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:17 (seven years ago)

Sounds good, check. Feels right, check. What more do you need? Phonetic spelling is just, like, a construct man. A wisp. A phantom. A contradiction. Not unlike...a rusted root.

Do u see?

these fucking bastards

omar little, Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:35 (seven years ago)

I find it vaguely fascinating to consider the confluence of events that resulted in this band making it any further than the freshman dorm of the drummer's cousin who popped by one of their underattended shows with a tape recorder and later blew the minds of his suitemates after they heavily partook from a carton of whippets. Like, this was actually on the radio, nationwide.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

i mainly associate this song with movie trailers in the '90s (*camera pans across mountainside as "send me on my way" plays and jonathan taylor thomas gets into some shenanigans*) and matilda

My wife and her sister worked in the same food coop as some of them, back in the 90s. I have been that close to genius.

It's been decades since I've heard this. It now sounds like U2's "Bad" played by the Talking Heads.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Thursday, 19 July 2018 15:56 (seven years ago)

Imagine the hijinks at that coop.

'Hey, what's wrong with these carrots? The radishes are weird, too. They're all covered in something. And this cassava. If I didn't know any better...'

Whenever I hear the song 'Love Shack' in public, say at a Walgreens or the Starbucks, I like to say 'tiiiiiin Root...Rusted' real loud over the music because I love the band Rusted Root. People really dig it, I think.

It promotes awareness of Rusted Root.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:17 (seven years ago)

Good one.

I mean 'Busted Root' is the one I just came up with in .00000000005 seconds that's a much better one, but still...good one, bands.

"crusted boot" was mine.

Crusted Boot would have been a good name for a band from the other contingent in that co-op.

What I do enjoy about the quote; he marvels at the neologisms as though they sprung from the deep unconscious, when you know they just sounded like words he heard in South African music. Indestructible Beat of the East End of Pittsburgh.

I'm pretty sure many of these vowels can't be properly transcribed in the absence of the "e with three dots" character, so I propose we suspend this poll until the Unicode Consortium stops ignoring the rightful demands of a certain lobby.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:33 (seven years ago)

You are correct, of course, as that is the most epic of their neologisms. A contribution to our language which will significantly impact generations to come.

'What are you doing, my son?'
'Well, father, simply put: ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.'
'Ah, I see. Please, carry on, my special boy. Namaste.'
'And a Namaste to you, o father.'

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

Luv this thread! Rusted Root has an extremely abbreviated Wikipedia page for a band that's been around 25+ years, and has released four major-label albums, four independent albums (one of them double-live), a "20th Century Masters" best-of, and five EPs...

Spin Doctors and Rusted Root were contemporaries -- mid/late-'93 "alternative" radio was all "Two Princes," "On My Way," and the 4 Non Blondes song.

I often find myself locked in a moment of zen-like contemplation when I realize that most bands are somebody's favorite band. Like Crazytown. Someone out there somewhere still proudly declares that Crazytown is their favorite band of all time. It's a very complex world, the one we live in.

I guess I was vaguely aware that this band existed. I must have seen posters or CDs or t-shirts or something. But I am very happy that I had not knowingly heard even a single djembe-slap-worth of their alleged "music" until now.

There were probably people on the periphery of my social circle who were into this sort of thing (baja shirt, hacky sack, Birkenstocks/huaraches, pennywhistle). But my truest droogs and I were mainly getting high and listening to Residents, Beethoven, Modern Jazz Quartet, and old-tymey 78s during those years. We were aware there was such a thing as radio, but as far as we were concerned it may as well have been broadcasting solely to the moon.

I'd never seen this video before and it's way less dated than I would have expected, like hippie shit is removed from all usual pop culture time signifiers.

A friend of mine ended up hanging out with these guys in a desert somewhere in like 1993 and I assume did a lot of shrooms. And this record was a staple at my wife's college house in Ann Arbor circa 1995 thanks to our shameful sort-of jam band past, but mostly from her hippie roommates who sometimes had random people and tanks of nitrous in the basement. I won't lie, I didn't hate it, though drugs were usually involved. I also had sex at least once while this record was playing.

Anybody here have some salient facts about əkoostik hookah?

This band, who I've never actually heard, was the breaking point for my wife's jam band era. I think she might have ended seeing them with the hippie roommates and fucking hated it so much that it made her suddenly and jarringly realize how dumb so much of that shit was and how obnoxious and idiotic and mindless and snobby all the hippies who frequented her house were.

She used to sing the line "take the train to HOOKAVILLE" to me as shorthand for "my hippie roomates did something stupid or irresponsible again" or to make me mad but it would fill her with shame to do so and she'd get angry at herself about it.

PS. I still love the Dead and refuse to strongly denounce Phish.

I'd like to think they're huge primadonnas about the exact spelling of their band's name in marquees and college newspaper ads and what have you. 'Excuse me, does that look like a schwa to you? Do you know who we are? We're əkoostik fucking hookah, you piece of trash. Don't make me crush you like a bug. (bows) Namaste.'

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 July 2018 12:06 (seven years ago)

Ohhhh, yeah, the other band that used to come through town all the time was Umphrey's McGee. Like, I understand that you're probably high when you name your jam band. That's just as god intended. But there isn't some point along the line where you manage to avoid being high for 5-10 minutes and realize what a horrifying assemblage of phonemes you've saddled your band with? Just typing the words 'Umphrey's McGee' kinda makes me want to punch something.

I am finally this moment listening to Rusted Root's hit single 'Send Me On My Way' for the first time since starting this thread (for the first time in years, probably) after realizing that it is, for some reason, on my iPod. I have no recollection of putting it there, but I guess I have to accede that the Root moves in mysterious ways and I cannot predict how or when they will manifest in my world.

I can tell that this singer has never used the top button of a shirt in his life. I might even go as far as the top two or three buttons. You gotta let the good people see the pukka beads, man.

I want to change into a knit hemp poncho so badly right now, I can't even tell you. I'm going to have to content myself for now with the tie-dyed tapestry I just draped over my work station.

It's worth noting that in Lunch's lovingly rendered travel-agency commercial, the listener is only treated to the beginner-level mantra of ommaway.

It's probably best this way. The casual TV watcher is likely not ready for the mystic Toltec wisdom enshrined in oombayseeyou. Let alone the expert-level incantation ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.

It simply won't do for mere initiates in Rootism to summon the spirit of seemoobadeeyah before they have properly undergone The Five Trials.

YMP, the agency in question had an extended cut of their commercial which they tested on some focus groups but, as expected, the invocation of 'ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon' was causing investment bankers and regional managers to abruptly quit their jobs to focus on aligning their chi and finally building that hydroponic greenhouse they'd been idly dreaming about for years. It was too powerful a weapon to be unleashed on the general public.

omar little, Friday, 20 July 2018 17:35 (seven years ago)

I can't for the life of me remember where "seemoobadeeyah" shows up if it is indeed different from "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon".

If you look at the original quote he seems to be saying that "oombayseeyou" is the one (one!) word he made up, and that "seemoobadeeyah" is his onomatopoeic evocation of how the melody goes?

Which brings us to the mystery of "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon." Numerous Rootologists have posited that "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon" is an elongated form of "oombayseeyou."

Compare it to the way that the English word "goodbye" derived from "god be with you." Extra syllables wore off over centuries of use in a process of concatenation, to the point that the original phrase is barely recognizable. god be with you > godb'w'you > goodbye.

If you interpolate the syllables you can kind of see it: ehBAbadeeSAYbubadeeYOn. It's essentially "oombaseeyou" with an extra badee and an extra bubadee.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 20 July 2018 17:35 (seven years ago)

I'm sorry, I have to disagree here. "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon" is it's own distinct phrae.

I liken it to a common reply. For example:

"How are you doing today?"

"ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon"

"oombaseeyou", OTOH, would be a more acceptable response to "What are you doing today?"

It's a subtle difference, I know.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 20 July 2018 18:13 (seven years ago)

I'm still in the process of trying to understand the employment of 'ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon' in speech. Is it 'aloha'-esque, an utterance with multiple meanings which depend upon the context of a given situation? When Windchimes (I assume the lead singer's name is Windchimes) walks into his corner bodega for a pack of American Spirits unfiltered, does he simply walk up to the counter and say 'ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon' confident that the clerk will pick up on the inflection and not mistakenly pass Windchimes the clove cigarettes he buys on occasion (usually when housesitting for his half-sister, Nugs, who's allergic to cigarette smoke, bleached flour, and nylon)?

Hi My father very Rusted Root with me what can I do? (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 July 2018 18:23 (seven years ago)

It's not a greeting, it's kind of like a colloquial reply along the lines of "same shit, different day."

The Root Head, having experienced the psychic havoc of being asked by his stepdad to mow the lawn, embraces a rebellious personal violence toward his own eardrums. 'ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon' gives expression to abstract states of feeling which all can share, at least all those who are Root Heads. In this way, the Root Head may be considered, for practical purposes, the Belgian Vegetarian. I've just proven it in this, my most popular post, which surely will not age poorly.

C'mon, where is the root love?

Sure, a bit of context is required here: this was the early 90's: Cracked Rear View, Blind Melon, Cotton-Eye Joe, etc. The Dead were still actively touring. Lots of people were obsessed with Phish but still hadn't realized that they didn't have many good songs. So amongst that field, Rusted Root pretty much oozed authenticity.

Plus, they were great live in the early days... fast-strummed acoustic guitar, hand percussion interludes. When that penny whistle hit the opening notes of semeommaway, the room went nuts. They must have played my college once a month in 1993, and I'm pretty sure I was there for every show.

I appreciate their absolute nothing of a Wikipedia entry. These are the only two paragraphs, the rest is basically stats stuff -- discography, membership, etc.

Rusted Root is an American worldbeat rock band formed in 1990 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by singer-guitarist Michael Glabicki, bassist Patrick Norman and percussionist Liz Berlin. The band got its start as the house band playing a weekly gig in Jack's Back Room on Pittsburgh's South Side. The band achieved fame in 1994 with its platinum-selling album When I Woke, which included the hit single "Send Me on My Way". The song has been featured prominently in many films and commercials. Rusted Root has sold more than three million albums.

The band is known for its fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music, with a strong percussion section that draws from African, Latin American, and Native American influences. Michael Glabicki has acknowledged the popular success of Peter Gabriel's 1986 album So as an influence on his decision to incorporate worldbeat into his own music. The band's lyrical content varies but often talks about Christianity and Judaism.

So, are you saying you feel a little bit of distance from the Rusted Root material, a lot of which was written when you were in your early 20s?

Yeah, there’s been moments on stage when I’m like, “What am I doing?” Like, “I don’t know what this is.” But, then, luckily, I’m fortunate enough that the music was so open-ended and wasn’t written about a certain time in my life. It was sort of like this collection of images and it was more tonal than it was lyrical. “Send Me on My Way” had “moobahdesee, moobahdeyah,” which aren’t even words, so now I can just sort of like adapt the tone to where I’m at now. It’s more ritualistic at this point for the audience and for myself, and improvising in it and opening it up, there’s a lot more in it to find.

'dubbahbuddah' features an tune called - wait for it - "Harmonic Convergence", which is definitely in the upper echelon of mid-'90s Widespread Panic-adjacent ephemera. Imagine if your college classmate - the one equally adept with making hemp necklaces as they are with the way-too-nice guitar courtesy of their Big-Pharma executive dad - took the chord progression of the intro of Bowie's "Panic in Detroit" and made that into an entire song, with (of course) lots of harmonics.

I used to think it would be even better if they pushed the tempo a few BPM, ditched the adult-contempo piano for some thrashing solos on the acoustic - oh, sorry, əkoostik - guitar, added more percussion tracks, then tied it together with better backup vocals. However, there's no need for Hookah to do this, because I'm basically describing the Rusted Root song "Ecstasy".

Rusted Root - solving our least-salient problems since 1994.

Some people eventually sober up and realize that the ideas they had while under the influence of mind-altering substances weren't nearly as profound as they seemed at the time. Others keep the party going indefinitely and utilize their major label record contracts as a means of foisting those ill-informed thoughts and expressions upon the public-at-large. Rusted Root et al are basically the margins of a high school stoner's geometry notebook made flesh.
