I completely agree. it should be done folksier, and twangier. Then it would be wonderful. I mean, at least Alanis actually sounded COMFORTABLE in her style.. Avril's voice doesn't fit what she's doing at all and the "punky" stylings are flattering to neither her voice nor her songwriting. and, you know, she is in your face. those songs are pretty intense. i can barely listen to 'complicated' and 'sk8er boi' anymore. i'm not kidding. i just feel all shivery. you know that feeling? it's like a slow shivery tingle. i just feel so weird. it started with not being able to watch the 'sk8er boi' video and then not being able to listen to the song at all. the lyrics do it, maybe. and her voice. i don't know. it's pop music at its best, i think. it's incredibly beautiful and intense and it's all, like, distilling the crazy spirit of whatever era into the perfect pop song or whatever. you know? it's powerful stuff.

Avril Lavigne: I naturally didn't work out who she was for a good while. But then I eventually heard her on R2 and saw her on TOTP. I like her a lot. OK, like most girl pop stars, she looks great. But I like her 'Complicated' 45 a great deal. I suppose it's one of my favourite 45s of the year.

'Skater Boy' (sp?) I'm not so sure about. I've only heard it once. I think it was Mayo playing it, on evening R2. It seemed gimmicky. I don't know, though - Ewing has a point: I remember the intro sounding good.

It's all OK with me.

The bit above the pap_er's nam_e on the front cov_er (I forget what this bit_s called - "fluff strip" is what I thin_k it should be called) read_s "Avril Lavigne - is she for real?" It occur_s to me that feat_ure writ0r_z in nation_al newspap_ers might produce some_th_ing more interest_ing more often if they got off their arses & did some work, rather than trawl_ing teh inter_web for all their idea_s. The feat_ured artickle was, uk, OK, I suppo_se.

Songs about not giving up the coochie are great--like Trina, who constantly boasts of her very high standards. Avril and Trina should do a record together (produced by Lil Jon).

I gotta disagree about the new Avril single, the music's her most generic yet ("I'm strumming, I'm rocking, I'm strumming, I'm rocking") and the lyrics are absurd - she sings about peer pressure like an afterschool special, and she never mentions under what circumstances or to what kinda boy (or girl - no, shut up, libido) she WOULD give it up, which makes it sound even more like adults writing a song for a teenager to sing that parents will approve of.

The fact that this song and its chorus - "Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time?" - will haunt me at the gym for the next few months makes me unhappy.
