Bands whose fans were their own subculture

This doesn't happen all that often,
but i'm thinking about acts like Insane Clown Posse, whose fans the 'juggalos' dress in a specific way and identify as fans of said band rather than simply metal or hip hop fans.

When I was much younger I'd notice tall skinny dudes with shaved heads and black clothes sporting NIN logos on the backs of their jackets. No doubt these guys listened to other music but it was always NIN and they struck me as a subculture in their own right

In central and South America there's a hard core of adamant Smiths fans who, again, identify as worshippers at the church of Morrissey.

Does this sort of thing still happen? What does it take for an act to transcend being simply part of a genre and start being followed like a cult with its own specific subject of fans who dress and behave in a certain way? Any other examples out there?

KISS Army
Deadheads, Phishheads, Dave Matthews Band fans. Yes, all jam bands and probably more blended these days, but at least in the 1990s they all had distinct characteristics.

xp: eh, maybe less so than the other others I mentioned. I dunno. Definitely not a visually distinct look, except in contrast to other jam band fans. Our sobriquet for them was "whitecaps" after the white baseball hats that were common among their fans in the mid-90s. a "norm-core" vibe. I know they do have extremely dedicated fans though.

Nagomu Girls: coalesced around a label started by the singer of the band Uchoten in 1983, a post-punk, goth-girl fashion and music subculture that formed the roots of several later, more well-known factions, goth-lola, early Shibuya-Kei, Fruits magazine, that sort of thing.

I would argue not. Mod was a thriving subculture for at least a year before the Who (or/aka the High Numbers) started gigging. They simply latched onto (some would not-unreasonably argue exploited) mod.

Though it’s true that later mods — in Australia in ‘67-‘68, the “mod revival” in England in the late ‘70s, various pockets of anglophiles in the US in the early ‘80s — took the early Who as a jumping-off point.

Discharge/Exploited and crust punk are 2 different things although the first influenced the latter (more Discharge than Exploited, crust punks mostly hated the Exploited tbh). Exploited = mohicans/spikes, crust punk = gross dreadlocks

Neither of them smell very good though.

Did that crusty punk thing start with Crass fandom? & expand I know there were quite a few bands operating in that area in the early 80s.

Then there was the Spirit of '77 thing that I never quite understood, i thought pun was more vital over the previous year or couple of years. & becoming codified by '77.
& a lot of people woken up by punk had moved onto things a bit less codified by the early 80s anyway.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:35 (seven years ago)

In the early 80's when dangerous punk gangs such as the "L.A. Death Squad" and "Circle One Family" were running rampant, few of the gangs stood out as much as the Suicidals, who dressed like Cholos. Formed from punks who grew up and lived in the ghettos of Venice, Long Beach, Santa Monica, and other parts of LA.

Their name comes from the "Suicidal Tendencies" punk/thrash/crossover band from Venice. Mike Muir along with the rest of the band were known to dress like "Cholos" even though they were punks. The Suicidal gang color is blue, which leads most to think that at first glance they are Crips, but Suicidals have no association with Crips. For the Suicidals rarely contended with typical major race gangs such as Bloods, Crips, Surenos, Nortenos etc. since they are of a different caliber and Suicidals only fought with other punk gangs.

I think it often happens that there are subcultures with distinct looks and everything for whom a single band is THE band, and their look and general way-of-being is strongly based on the band in some way, but they're not as explicitly associated with the band as Juggalos (surprised nobody mentioned them itt yet!) and KISS army. In fact, sometimes it might be considered gauche to point out how much the subculture owes to the band (or even that the subculture exists). My wife's college friend group is basically defined by their devotion to Jimmy Eat World, but she gets really annoyed when I point it out!

"down with the clown" is an example of the sort of catchphrase that band subcultures often generate (in this case, if you are "down with the clown," you are a Juggalo, and Juggalos are followers of the posse of "Insane Clowns" who make up the band Insane Clown Posse, often abbreviated as ICP).

I dated a guy in college whose cousin was in the band Kix. A year or so after we broke up, he emailed me about going to a show where the audience sprayed midwestern soda with plastic toys and it was like, a thing, and everyone there were kinda the same, like, a subculture, and the band was called Insane Clown Posse. Pretty sure that was what they were called.

”What is that thing that connects to the fans and the band? It's not just songs,” says Simmons, who turns 70 this summer. “It's sort of a gathering of the tribes, because it is culture. There's no reason to put KISS tattoos on your body and to name your children after our songs. There's this other much bigger idea that hovers above the band and the fans. There’s some connection to your life."

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Saturday, 5 September 2020 04:05 (five years ago)

Shit, long story, but back in 1998 me and about 14 other LA-area people who were HUGE fans of Eve 6 (you remember them - "wanna put my tender heart in a blender, watch it spin round to a beautiful oblivion, rendezvous and I'm through with you!"; great song) were paid by their label RCA Records to walk a few blocks down Hollywood Blvd to the Capitol Records building where there was a big release party going on for Garth Brooks because of three albums of his they were re-releasing that day. Me and all the other Eve 6 guys, we called ourselves The Sixers like it was like our gang name, and we did anything RCA told us to do to promote Eve 6. Anyway, one day that April, Capitol Records literally paid us $500 each to go walk down there, scope them all out, identify the weakest targets, and then get back to our rental car, drive it up to the Garth Brooks thing and run out and kidnap four of his fans, take them to the alley behind the Sunset Blvd Denny's, and beat them to within inches of their life with baseball bats. RCA thought this would somehow increase Eve 6's record sales! Of course we all did this without hesitation because hey it was 1998, MDMA was a new drug (that we were all taking), we were fueled by that and the propulsive energy of Eve 6, and frankly we needed the money!!!

Anyway, yeah, cliffs notes version for the thread: Eve 6 fans call themselves "Sixers," or at least we did back in '98.

Eskimoes following the MIssion but not sure they would have been entirely separate from other early 70s rock Goth heads. Or did they fight themn on the beaches with Sisters of Mercy fans?

Burrito doesn't know that I was, in fact, one of the "Garth Kids" that the notorious Sixers abducted and beat up.

The "Garths," as we called ourselves never harmed anyone. We were just united by our love of the music of Garth Brooks. Yeah, some people made fun of us for wearing cowboy hats and heavy eyeliner and lipstick. But there was certainly no call for violence against the Garth community.

Anyway, after going through that phase, many of us drifted away from being Garths and instead gravitated toward an interesting little band called Icy Pee. We carried jugs of frozen urine with us everywhere we went. No one knows why. I guess that's why they started calling us Juggaloos. But

pomenitul, Saturday, 5 September 2020 17:05 (five years ago)

Of course we all did this without hesitation because hey it was 1998, MDMA was a new drug (that we were all taking), we were fueled by that and the propulsive energy of Eve 6, and frankly we needed the money!!!

this is the most terrifying copypasta i've ever read.

life is beauitul (rip van wanko), Saturday, 5 September 2020 18:11 (five years ago)

Actually it was "gorilla marketing," not "guerrilla marketing." Some of us were paid to dress as gorillas to promote Damon Albarn's conceptual project, Gorillaz.

Unfortunately the Sixers (whom we called "sux0rs") showed up first. They beat us up with baseball bats behind a Denny's. That's why their band became hugely popular and critically lauded, as they are to this day.

But they never attained the popularity of the Posse of Insane Clowns. Has anyone mentioned them yet in this thread?

My only more personal interaction with a Juggalo was with a Juggalette in a small town in mountainous northern California.

We'd hopped off a boxcar the evening before, grabbed beers and food, and found a good place to camp by the river. But later that night, it began to rain, so we had to pack up all our shit and hike in pouring rain to an overpass, where we slept in dust for a few hours.

Eventually we wandered back into town, ending up at an oddly placed gazebo along the main street. It was still pouring, and we were exhausted, and then this young woman came up to us and asked us if she could help us in any way. She also asked whether we had gotten in on a freight train and we said yes. We were a little suspicious, but we followed her when she said we could dry off and cook food at her house.

Which was a small, bleak apartment in an old apartment building that used to be a whorehouse, in sight of the river and the train tracks. We were hanging out with her, she kept packing bowls of ditch weed and talking about how her kid got taken from her. There were lots of legal papers scattered about, and she had two very young kittens living with her. We had our stuff in her dryer and cooker up some chili ramen.

Then, she answered her phone with a "whoop whoop" and we knew immediately that we were in the presence of a Juggalette.

Her mom came over and asked us why we were trying to get her daughter to run away from the small town. We told her we were doing nothing of the sort.

Eventually, it cleared up and our stuff got dry, and we cleared out. We talked about her sometimes, the kindly Juggalette.

Two years later, we're at the hobo museum where we eventually lived for a while, but that's besides the point. She was there! It was near the town where we'd first met her and during a party weekend, and I recognized her immediately. She had a hatchetman tattoo on her foot. She didn't recognize me at all but kept hitting on me all weekend even when my now-husband showed up and we were being all gross and queer hobo.

Anyway, when we moved to the area for a bit and I worked in the grocery store in town, she came in while I was cashiering, and my co-worker watched her try to steal a bunch of supplements. So, the last time I saw her, she was telling me that I was cute but that my co-worker was a terrible cunt who could get fucked. Never saw her again, a lost soul in northern California mountain towns.

I'm too lazy to look for it, but I swear an ilxor told a story about wandering through the outdoor patio scene when both Buffett and ICP were playing on the same night, and he overheard the pre-gaming Parrotheads obliviously cracking jokes, like "what are these clowns all dressed up for?"

I know it's not a band, but stumbling onto Instagram reels of young people in 2025 keeping the dancing, fashion and social clubs going makes me wonder if "northern soul" might be a response.

Swifties?

ian, Thursday, 3 April 2025 00:54 (ten months ago)

Sure, Swifties are what Taylor Swift fans are called now, but early in her career, her fans mainly identified as fans of the genre "Ingenue Country-Pop," abbreviated ICP.

Or sometimes they used a sobriquet derived from the jugs of water that Swift kept on hand backstage to stay hydrated during her energetic concerts.

Iza Duffus Hardy (President Keyes), Thursday, 3 April 2025 13:49 (ten months ago)

On a microscopic level there were a bunch of hippie-era bands that were simultaneously bands and communes. The Incredible String Band, Gong, Hawkwind etc. but especially The Incredible String Band. Or at least they squatted together and had a circle of followers. Hawkwind was the house band of Frestonia, an independent nation that had its own air, its own transport - bicycles - plus access to water and shops.

What they lacked in numbers they made up for in intensity. Ditto Charles Manson's Family, and to a lesser extent Jim Jones' crew in Jonestown. Jim Jones pioneered the chopped and screwed style and invented purple drank. He was the first black president, predating Bill Clinton by twenty years.

Along similar lines there are probably several hip-hop bands that raise funds on the side by selling drugs and/or killing people, again probably not in huge numbers but what they lack in numbers they make up with the willingness to kill and die for their colours. It is surprising in retrospect how much media in the 1960s was convinced that rock music would become a new world religion, with Mick Jagger leading the children of the world into a new level of consciousness etc.

Which of course didn't happen. I think you need a combination of a solid visual identity, absolute loathing from the mainstream - so you're a rebel, an underdog - and an awesome stream of top music, which is why Iron Maiden had such a strong following. The Insane Clown Posse at least had the first two things. But a religion offers eternal life or at least spiritual salvation, which is something missing from modern music.

thinking about this: what about the Dropkick Murphys? They started out as a Boston street punk band, but have morphed into an Irish pride pop-punk band beloved by middle-aged chuds from the suburbs who absolutely worship them— like it’s definitely a thing, at least in the mid-Atlantic and New England.

i saw them a few times back in the day, but then a few years ago went with a childhood friend (who is no longer a friend, sadly) to see them open for Rancid and I was shocked at the number of people who were there just to see them, and also the correlation of Dropkick fans to Trump stickers on brand new SUVs in the parking lot

Which given the band has been ripping into Trump lately is hopefully causing said fans a lot of cognitive dissonance:
