I first started paying attention with "Hussle in the House" like most people, it was a smart idea for a sample flip...I had a friend who was into the bullets have no name series & he was living in LA at the time but I didn't keep up w Nipsey really until 2012 when DJ Kenn told me he was his favorite rapper ... i didnt know folks were still feeling him like that but I thought this video was really moving ... it came out about the time that in the mainstream it felt like maybe his wave had crested, and he hadn't really taken off like some folks thought he would, but he was establishing an outside-the-system model for success

he didn't have a straight arc to success after appearing on the cover of xxl and i'd blame that more on the pre-streaming industry of the katy perry era, it was very difficult for "Regional thugs" (copyright spin mag) to cross over at the time even if they were buzzing heavily at a local level. ppl at the time made fun of his $100 cd stunt but it was a smart argument abt how the value of art is what you can make people pay for it, moving against the stigma of street music being valueless w/out the imprimatur of a major label or w/e ... then jay z cosigned it ...

There has certainly been a steady churn of more or less enjoyable rap songs, but which albums/tapes are we going to look back at in five or ten years as defining 2019? (Megan and DaBaby's albums are fun enough I guess, but I'm not loving any of them with a passion.)
