Vote Here: https://goo.gl/forms/ESVJBptEgdE54Hoy1

How to vote: enter your tracks and album ballots (up to 25 items on each), one item per line, in the appropriate fields. Please copy each line directly from the nominations lists; do not number your ballot. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.

(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.

(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

good question!

I would think so.

While you're voting, don't forget to nominate your favorite metal and heavy rock albums here:

ILX Metal n' Heavy Rock Poll 2018: NOMINATIONS thread - open till Jan. 19th, 2019!

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 5 January 2019 17:25 (seven years ago)

Can we make it a non-binding rule to lobby for the tracks-albums nominated by others, against parochialism ?
I intend to put the track playlist to good use, on shuffle right now (Touch Absence - Lanark Artefax, nice stuff).

Nabozo, Saturday, 5 January 2019 20:11 (seven years ago)

Don't want to lobby for anything, just want to say that I've been listening to the Youtube tracks playlist and there is loads of great stuff on there I haven't heard before.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 5 January 2019 20:39 (seven years ago)

Dang missed the nomination deadline... shouldn't affect my albums poll but my tracks poll will suffer

octobeard, Saturday, 5 January 2019 21:08 (seven years ago)

I think you can do write-ins.

zwei dunkel jungen (crüt), Saturday, 5 January 2019 21:13 (seven years ago)

I believe I will limit my campaigning to the Tropical Fuck Storm album, which I wrote about here. My favorite track from it (which someone nominated!) is Rubber Bullies.

resident hack (Simon H.), Sunday, 6 January 2019 01:21 (six years ago)

^ Hopefully there won't be catastrophic vote-splitting on the TFS front. I think I'll vote this year, very likely for "You Let My Tires Down."

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 6 January 2019 04:18 (six years ago)

I don't expect them to make a dent in the tracks poll tbh. I'm putting my chips on the album poll.

resident hack (Simon H.), Sunday, 6 January 2019 04:53 (six years ago)

i'm now thinking i should have nominated their Stayin' Alive cover

ufo, Sunday, 6 January 2019 05:20 (six years ago)

I had that exact same thought.

Chris L, Sunday, 6 January 2019 10:59 (six years ago)

'Rubber Bullies' was my nomination but yeah between that and 'You Let My Tires Down' is a tough call for me - the album has really grown on me but I'm not sure it'll make my ballot, there are definitely far too many things I want to vote for album-wise this year...

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 6 January 2019 12:10 (six years ago)

I second the campaigning for Tropical Fuck Storm, although I'll certainly be adding to the track votesplit effect

I add to it a campaign for Trust Fund, who bowed out with one of the (all-time imo) great British indie records, with a bit of help from Mitski's producer. The standout track is probably Abundant, which will also be high up my ballot

imago, Sunday, 6 January 2019 12:23 (six years ago)

added context for that song/video/album: it was all made knowing they'd break up the band afterwards ;_;

imago, Sunday, 6 January 2019 12:24 (six years ago)

here's a bunch of global pop favourites i want to highlight

albums:

Wednesday Campanella - Galapagos: one of the most consistently exciting pop groups in the world at the moment headed in a more mellow and somewhat balearic direction for their latest album without losing anything. single The Bamboo Princess is a modern take on Homogenic-esque orchestration + beats while last year's single Melos is jazzy guitar + dnb breaks + a gamelan breakdown, reminiscent of Tortoise of all things. they also have consistently excellent music videos!

Busiswa - Highly Flavoured: a terrific gqom album that's exciting and varied the whole way through. about as good as pop music gets

Mlindo the Vocalist - Emakhaya: gorgeous and extremely chill afropop ballads perfect for a summer night. single Macala is a highlight and closes the album on a more energetic note

tracks:

Koutei Camera Girl Drei - Toronto Lot: a 6 minute pop-techno mini-epic, sort of like if Silent Shout had a soaring jpop chorus. parent mini-album New Way Of Lovin' is certainly worth a listen too

BTS - Idol: after successfully breaking into the US market and at the height of their career so far, BTS made a somewhat radical departure from their usual sound with Idol, which heavily (and successfully) incorporates south african gqom, which isn't a sound that has much presence at all in either korean or western pop so far and the resulting fusion doesn't quite sound like anything else in pop at the moment

NCT U - Baby Don't Stop: this is maybe the best rnbass song i've ever heard? all the vocal layering rules so much

LOONA/Olivia Hye ft. JinSoul - Egoist: 2017 kpop mvps LOONA didn't have anywhere near as strong a 2018 but Egoist was still a standout with its off-kilter production and sudden shifts

Hyolyn - See Sea: all tropical house should be this good! effortlessly catchy and i love all the dynamic shifts, especially with the vocals

Oh My Girl - Remember Me: combines a soaring romantic strings kpop girl group chorus with an energetic rap over electro beats in the verse - almost feels like two songs stitched together in the kpop tradition but it flows excellently

Simmy ft. Sun-El Musician - Ubala: sublime afrohouse and my favourite track from Sun-El's various projects this year, highly recommended if you loved Akanamali last year

Burna Boy - On the Low: there's probably going to be major vote splitting for Burna Boy tracks but this non-album single was my favourite

ufo, Sunday, 6 January 2019 12:42 (six years ago)

I'm sure a lot of this stuff is amazing but I'm going to give the lobbying a miss and I don't really see the point of voting for anything I didn't hear in 2018. Like there's enough stuff I *did* play to death and I'd rather my ballot was a reflection of why my 2018 was actually like, rather than a lot of stuff hastily crammed in January 2019.

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 January 2019 16:00 (six years ago)

i love the lobbying and hate reality

ogmor, Sunday, 6 January 2019 16:24 (six years ago)

I screwed up thinking the deadline for nominations was today meaning my tracks ballot will be even more meaningless than usual :(

Bobbins crew a man down

or something, Sunday, 6 January 2019 16:37 (six years ago)

the hasty cramming is the most fun part of this whole thing

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:29 (six years ago)

for me at least. anyway enthusiastically seconding the simmy and burna boy tracks though i'm voting for "ye" from the latter

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:29 (six years ago)

I've never voted in this before partly because I'm always so burnt out on keeping up with new music by Dec/Jan that I can't be bothered to do any exploring come polling time. Will probably make an album ballot just to see if anything I like places though.

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:41 (six years ago)

eris drew: "hold me (t4t embrace mix)": as featured in the recent sprinkles-esque techno thread, debuted on a split with octa octa, would seem almost too eager to please (or rather i loved it so immediately that i'm a little suspicious of it) with the "mardis gras" sample and yet it's this perfectly balanced patch of weather

talaboman: "dins et llit (superpitcher remix)": this is exactly what you'd expect a superpitcher remix of talaboman to sound like, slow motion raving on the forest floor, thank god

four tet remixes from the edge of the universe sidebar: bicep, "opal" / daniel avery, "quick eternity". i prefer and am voting for the latter

tessela: glisten: b-side to a lanark artefax remix, sharply bladed techno

keysha: stop it!: don't even know if i'm going to vote for this bc it's old but i think more ppl should hear it :D

toni braxton: long as i live: i'm still impressed that toni braxton put out an immortal single that stands with her best work in 2018

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

forgot this one: peach: "silky": love the way this track moves, how it keeps blinking and whirring through several atmospheric changes

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:58 (six years ago)

also, when the vocals come in >>>>>>>>>>

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 17:59 (six years ago)

mewithoutyou: "julia (or, holy to the lord on the bells of horses)": this is the lead single for my favorite album of the year so i'm a little split on whether i'm gonna vote for it in the tracks poll, but before i even heard the album i thought this was so massive and their best song yet, just a total bath of guitars

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 6 January 2019 18:04 (six years ago)

That Peach track is wonderful it's true.

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 January 2019 18:58 (six years ago)

i'll be honest i never manage to narrow down the songs into a ballot i can actually submit, i love the lobbying thread because it gets me even farther from actually submitting a ballot

errang (rushomancy), Sunday, 6 January 2019 19:10 (six years ago)

it sounded awful, but this was just a first response!

calzino, Sunday, 6 January 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

wrong thread!

calzino, Sunday, 6 January 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

Anyone with an interest in Richard Youngs should check out his new Arthur Russell-esque AMOR album. It's a December release and as with most of Youngs' stuff now it hasn't got much attention. It's really lovely.

seandalai, Sunday, 6 January 2019 22:20 (six years ago)

talking about youngs, i liked "red and blue bear" from last year a lot but i don't think i nommed it

errang (rushomancy), Monday, 7 January 2019 00:43 (six years ago)

put together a rough version of my ballot tonight. altho it's not likely that anything that i hear this late in the game will make it onto my final list, especially given how many tough cuts i already made up to this point, i still look forward to checking out ppl's lobbying selections :)

dyl, Monday, 7 January 2019 05:51 (six years ago)

Noticed one error on the album list, the artist name "Jaakko Eino Kalevi" is misspelled as "Jaakko Eino Kaveli".

imago, Monday, 7 January 2019 09:23 (six years ago)

Also, there are two albums there by "Johnny Greenwood" and "Jonny Greenwood", I presume it's the same guy?

Tuomas, Monday, 7 January 2019 09:24 (six years ago)

"Jaakko", "Eino", and "Kalevi" are all popular male names in here, you racist. :)

bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Monday, 7 January 2019 10:22 (six years ago)

A few of my favourites from this year:

ЛУНА - Спящая красавица - hypnotic Ukrainian electro-pop

Nego do Borel - Me Solta - hyperactive funk carioca. The video is divisive for a variety of reasons but the song bangs

Clement Froissart - Peupleraie melancholy French synthpop. All done a million times before but still strangely affecting

Talisto - Te Llamé ft. Diego Adrián & Ms Nina Woozy neoperreo reggaeton from Argentina via Stockholm

Musya Totibadze - Останусь с тобой Simple, charming Russian indie-electro-pop. I think Totibadze releases songs at a rate of about one a year but, when she gets around to it, they tend to be good.

For albums, my favourite by a mile was Monetochka's:

Monetochka / монеточка

I also really enjoyed Angele's oddly calming Belgian pop-reggae despite the Trenchant Social Commentary and Nicole Dollanganger's Tumblr-goth folk

ShariVari, Monday, 7 January 2019 16:26 (six years ago)

I'm definitely into that first one you posted. I'll rep for a little bit of stuff soon!

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 21:36 (six years ago)

The Makaya McCraven album (Universal Beings) has sounded better and better to me the more time I've spent with it. I'd start a thread but I don't think I have anything very smart to say about it. Anyone even a little jazz-curious should check it out though. It's very approachable and the production approach of mixing and looping live recordings is super effective.

I never know what dancehall might appeal to non-partisans, but two newcomers, Koffee - Toast and Rygin King - Tuff, are battling it out for my top slot.

rob, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 21:50 (six years ago)

Vote for Nyan Cat!

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 22:19 (six years ago)

some percys

Man Power - Barranquilla Trifle (Ruf Dug Zouk Remix) - everyone said "Neutron Dance" was a sucessor to "Inspector Norse" but it is actually horrific and chintzy and this is so much better - just totally gleeful, shamelessly buoyant dance music that sounds properly tropical

Farao - Marry Me - the album didn't quite match the heights of this but if you're looking for a substitute for Susanne Sundfor circa "Ten Love Songs" then this is definitely for you

Bo'vel - Check 4 U - this is old but it was reissued this year and it's everything I like in music - r&b vocals, a slow groove and thick humid bass - 2018 feels like a big year for a streetsoul revival thanks to certain NTS Radio shows and this is possibly the pinnacle of the sound

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 22:30 (six years ago)

Feeling like a personal failure for forgetting to get "Gold Purple Orange" on the tracks list.

also i am very out of the loop so some of these "discoveries" may be well-trod but Negative Gemini, Otha, Pillow Queens, Saloli, and SOPHIE have been very pleasant surprises that might make my ballot(s)!

(also The Beths, Black Dresses, Camp Cope, Carla Del Forno, Kristin Hersh, MNEK, and Perfume and a few others, it's actually a very long list)

and to think i haven't even gotten to the beloved upthread Tropical Fuck Storm yet!

yes, do that ;-) S'really good, honest. Just Tim on his own doin' a folky, atmospheric piece, with harpsichord and bells and very subtle electric guitar and electronics.

Alternatively y'all can come round my house to listen to the record.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 20:41 (six years ago)

I doubt this will have all that much traction on ilx, but I am in love with the band Anatomy, and nominated both the album and this track: 'Anatomy Theme'. I guess they would fall under sad queer post-punk artrock noise?

For the psych fans, Kuunatic from Japan toured the UK this year and fucking killed it, I nominated the track Roho Ulio Toweka.

For the KPop fans, both G-Idle - HANN and Gugudan - Not That Type are worth checking out - not sure how much they got talked about on the rolling thread.

I also noticed that someone nominated the Spook School's 'Still Alive' this year, which I would vote for but it was my #7 last year - anyone into queer indiepop please vote for it, I can't really vote for it two years running!

emil.y, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 21:50 (six years ago)

ufo, Thursday, 10 January 2019 12:25 (six years ago)

Not many of my favourite tracks will make it in all probability, but depending on how much ILM likes monstrously climactic emo gothgaze and Joy Division keyboards (paging DJP!) I think Snape - Waiting For Death could have its fans

I'd also like to root for the following widescreen-metalcore-falling-into-a-Cardiacs-blender brilliance, from an album that I hold very dear: The Armed - Luxury Themes - jawdropping, I'm sure you'll agree

Next, and also from albums I love, are two take-or-leave ten-minute jobs. You know me by now. Machine Girl - A Decent Man is digital hardcore that swallows the Vision Creation Newsun pill halfway through, and Thumpermonkey - Make Me Young, Etc is PROGGE - a swelling, symphonic paean to the end of the world that stands alongside the mastery of prime Genesis and *waffles on for thirty increasingly awful paragraphs*

And Young Dreams - My Brain On Love is probably my favourite pop song of 2018. Genre: BAROQUE VAPORGUM. Pure Shambhala

My best discovery from others' track nominations is undoubtedly Jimothy Lacoste - Subway System, which doubles as video of the year, breakout UK star of the year and a worthy ILM poll successor to Blue Pedro I HOPE. FFO comedy rap that's actually good, and metro systems the world over

imago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 12:46 (six years ago)

lol, I probably will throw Jimothy a vote. Will check out your other recommendations too, I only know JL and MG.

emil.y, Thursday, 10 January 2019 13:30 (six years ago)

And I'll certainly check out yours - not sure I've heard any of them yet!

imago, Thursday, 10 January 2019 13:38 (six years ago)

'I Can Speak Spanish' is the best Jimothy fwiw.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 January 2019 13:45 (six years ago)

My biggest discovery so far listening to the nominated tracks on shuffle is Joanna Wang - I Dream We Will Be Together Again. So simple and elegant and amazing.

I have no fondness for what little I've heard of Trippe Redd elsewhere, but Alison Wonderland lures him into a soup-y, sticky treacle of a song that sneaks up on you and turns everything it touches into something irresistible Alison Wonderland - High

For a promotional occasion like this, it's fortunate that Emilie Nicolas - Feel Fine gets to the best part of the song right away.

This song would get many #1s if performed by Dua Lipa. The ready-to-go-big video is already there, but somehow it hasn't blown up yet Glowie - Body

Singing 'German' is fun and EO knows it EO - German

Grime veteran D Double E always manages to make his creative choices surprising, playful and addictive in all their simplicity, year after year. Gorgon City x D Double E - Hear That

In my desperate searching for why I know this song, I have determined that it is a cover of a 90's Russian pop song, but that still doesn't explain why I, a Canadian who has never been to or delved into the pop history of Russia, know it.

Damn, I guess I just figured someone (anyone?!) would've voted for the closest thing to a good New Order 2018 single - The Liminanas' "The Gift" (featuring Peter Hook!). Granted, it's not apex New Order, but definitely in the top end of "Waiting for the Siren's Call"-era New Order.

Also, there are two albums there by "Johnny Greenwood" and "Jonny Greenwood", I presume it's the same guy?

the closest thing to a good new order single last year was krystal klear - neutron dance

ufo, Friday, 11 January 2019 10:54 (six years ago)

That's true in that it is similar to a specific good single by new order but false in that it is bad

or something, Friday, 11 January 2019 10:58 (six years ago)

so lowest common denominator it's a jam because of not in spite of its australiosity, blew up in 2018, v powerful hair and energy in the vid: the chats - smoko https://youtu.be/j58V2vC9EPc

that is a superlative video

Smoko is excellent and I’m bending my normal aversion to ‘year of impact’ to vote for it.

the whole ep is great but "neutron dance" is the standout, it's no "inspector norse" but it's still a fantastic new order rip

Decided I was wasting too much time internally debating placement/inclusion for my ballots so just voted.

silverfish, Friday, 11 January 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

just a couple recs for songs and albums i'm gonna be voting for highly:

Superchunk - Black Thread -- the cathartic closer to the best Superchunk album in 25 years.

Sada Baby ft. Drego - Bloxk Party -- goon-friendly voters would do well to rally around this one, the most fun rap single (and video) of the year

H.C. McEntire - Red Silo -- No relation to Reba, the best song from the Mount Moriah lead singer's solo album. a warm love song with strikingly specific lyricism and a fantastic organ tone.

Petal - Magic Gone -- sweet and melodic indie rock with real emotional oomph. brad started a thread but no one commented, ce la vie. but this record is gorgeous and worthy of attention if you like Big Thief or any of the boygenius brigade.

Hermit & The Recluse - Orpheus & The Sirens - Ka's latest, and it's a unique thrill to hear him emerge from his hermetically sealed world (production is handled by Animos). it's still pitch black, but has a sweeping cinematic quality that Ka usually works hard to avoid.

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 January 2019 16:05 (six years ago)

yeah that petal record is great, kiley one of the best indie rock songwriters going right now (...if not the best). i regret not pitching it to pfork lol

I always end up doing this too and usually have regrets. E.g., I'm listening to the Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids album right now for the first time in a while and wish I'd put it much higher

rob, Friday, 11 January 2019 16:44 (six years ago)

oh, I'm sure I'll have regrets, but I'll always have those no matter how long I wait to cast my votes. Also, as far as regrets go, leaving that DJ Koze album off my ballot probably won't haunt my dreams.

I am really out of the loop this year, its been great to catch up thru the noms list, a lot of great stuff this year.

One thing that I nominated this year that I would campaign for is Ghoomar I love the chaotic chanting swirl the song ends up in. Its my favourite bollywood hit this year.

Adikia ft. Mon-Sala, Yas Lo, Sofa, Yeboyah, Nisa, Donatella, F - Koskematon

I guess I should rep for this song, since it's probably gonna be my #1, but dunno if anyone else is gonna vote for it, since it's (partially) in Finnish... "Koskematon" is pretty much the Me Too -anthem of this country, with a whole bunch of fucking tough up-and-coming local rappers doing their take on sexual harrassment and self-determination. "Koskematon" is "untouchable" in Finnish, and the chorus goes something like "the daddies try to get on my skin / but they get seized up / you know the fact is / the matriarchate is untouchable". As for the rest of it, I'm sure you can figure it out from the (rather awesome) video, and a couple of the choruses are in English.

Tuomas, Friday, 11 January 2019 21:42 (six years ago)

Oh and the PERFUME album is really underrated! "Let Me Know" is low key a classic Perfume single.

xpost to Tuomas: Love it! Aw, there's "Kvinnenes Kulturhistorie" at 0:17, Tootikki + Tove at 1:04, but most of the remaining masks and references elude me, shamefully. I guess it's Nurmi there, running, before getting a new face? Would love some pointers towards other parts. Thanks!

lol this downtown boys selena/pretenders cover is amazing: https://youtu.be/GO-KkVgxhK4

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 January 2019 22:09 (six years ago)

The first mask is Tarja Halonen, the former Finnish president (who also used to be the head of Seta, the national LGTBQ organisation back in the '80s). The second is Tuutikki and Tove Jansson, as you know. <3 Third is Sofi Oksanen, probably the most popular living novelist in here at them moment, and an outspoken feminist. The fourth statue is of Paavo Nurmi, a runner who won several medals in the olympics in the 1920s, so the mask they use is of Enni Rukajärvi, a snowboarder who's won silver and bronze in the olympics. The fifth statue is of Lenin, which for some reason we have in Helsinki, so the mask they put up is of Hertta Kuusinen, one of the most prominent communist politicians from the '40s to the '60s. So basically all the statues are of Finnish historical men, replaced with masks of respected women in the same profession.

Seconding imago's shout-out for stellar indie-pop band Trust Fund. It is just the cutest and most dynamically hook-y final album imaginable. They continuously progressed their sound throughout their short career, but this is particularly ambitious and crushingly personal and the songs sink in and stay for months. I really hope more people hear it and love it.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 12 January 2019 13:10 (six years ago)

I do like Trust Fund (and have played w/ them several times) but seem to always miss the full albums. Will make sure I check it out but have so many albums in the running I doubt it'll make it with such a short time to go.

emil.y, Saturday, 12 January 2019 20:40 (six years ago)

Poll-runners, what is the policy on write-ins? I nominated an EP for the albums list but would prefer to vote for a single track off it - I know I'll likely be the only vote but I like having my ilx ballot be as "accurate" to my year as possible.

emil.y, Saturday, 12 January 2019 20:43 (six years ago)

Write-ins are not guaranteed to be counted (if everyone's ballot was all write-ins the system would break down) but in practice they always are.

seandalai, Sunday, 13 January 2019 01:40 (six years ago)

My ballot will include one write-in because I accidentally nominated a different Laura Veirs track than I intended to, but I don't suspect the impact that this will have on the results will be all that dramatic.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Sunday, 13 January 2019 01:57 (six years ago)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 January 2019 02:42 (six years ago)

i like the two four tet remixes upthread but also listened to the originals they were based on and the differences are not especially pronounced? i might prefer the unremixed daniel avery track. (remember when people were praising four tet's remix of that eric prydz track left and right, writing thinkpieces about people's reactions to it in clubs and blahblahblah and then it turned out when you listened to the original all the good/interesting/'innovative' parts were actually there all along, just nobody had bothered to notice b/c no one expected anything good to come from eric prydz? good times.)

dyl, Sunday, 13 January 2019 03:28 (six years ago)

I love this Yubin, "Lady" track. Much thanks to whomever nominated it. I included it in the weighted top 4 of my mixed tracks ballot.

Tracks ballot in tonight, btw. I'll come back and do albums in a day or two.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 January 2019 03:58 (six years ago)

i think i will submit my ballot soon. here are some tracks i like a lot that i will probably vote highly for.

kash doll - for everybody :: "if a girl answers (don't hang up)" for 2018, but actually even better. (it actually first came out in 2017 but got picked up and re-released by republic a year later.) one part knowingly over-the-top catfight, an equal part tough love, plus a lucid rumination on sexual politics lurking just beneath the surface. in the moments when the bass falls back and the piano line descends to a vamp on its more somber chords, my mind inevitably wanders to the man, un-pictured yet firmly and sadly at the center. i've heard very little else from this artist, but of what i've heard nothing grabbed me anywhere close to how this did.

gerardo ortiz - egoísta :: i worked in texas for a month this year, giving me more opportunity than i usually have to listen to spanish-language radio and otherwise experience latin music in spaces where it's not just a crossover curiosity but an all-consuming phenom. i don't think i'll ever quite forget driving down the highway late at night hearing the hauntingly ethereal cumbia of raymix's "oye mujer" or seeing the way the glorious peal of ozuna's supernatural voice delivering the "te boté" chorus got an entire packed club moving. but surprise, it's actually this, a romantic ballad over a beautiful-tho-conventional banda arrangement that had me coming back the most. i wish i had better reasons to justify it, but it really just comes down to that chorus: enormous and booming, unfurled so immediately like a revelation from the mountaintops. completely gorgeous.

kurt vile - bassackwards :: i'm so glad he finally managed to release a great song that doesn't sound like one of his older great songs for the first time in who-knows-how-long. (don't tell me if there's actually another song of his i've overlooked that sounds just like this -- i prefer my ignorance.) a lush, unrelenting arrangement i can just let myself completely sink into, plus a beautifully freeform, wandering lyric: "there was no format because, well, we like it like that."

marsha ambrosius - old times :: every year there's always a handful of r&b singles that i feel are more slept-on than they should be, even here, in favor of bigger hits and buzzblog-friendlier work alike, so i do feel the need to echo the love i've seen others express here-n-there for songs like jacquees's "you", mariah's "with you", and toni braxton's "long as i live". and then there's this, a hauntingly sublime rendering of our need to hide those we love from the world, unsure whether we're actually protecting them or shielding ourselves from heartbreak -- or trying both but accomplishing neither. marsha's vocal is pained and impassioned, at times broken like a sob, and when the anguish collapses to the final fadeout, it gives way to a mood not quite serene but also certainly not resigned.

I'd like to rep for:

Emerson Kitamura - Rock Your Baby: a cover of the George McCrae classic that doubles down on its potential as a lullaby. Balearic? Soporific? I think it's really beautiful.

DJ Koze - The Love Truck: the B-side of "Pick Up", Koze doing what he does best IMO; certainly this is better than most of his album.

ZHU and Tame Impala - My Life. The collaboration nobody asked for and, as one wag puts it, "I can't believe they made a whole song based around the Windows 10 eject USB sound effect" but I love getting lost in this.

And finally, as all of the above are a bit on the smooth side, how about some funky 70s-style crime caper 'n' car chase music from Calibro 35?

It's probably too late to rep for anything now, but for what it's worth here are a few tracks I intend to throw votes at:

Raveena - Honey - Raveena is an Indian-American singer making soft, delicate, Strother-sister R&B and this is my pick of her numerous singles which I presume are leading into a longer project of some sort.

Georgia - Started Out - I had no cognisance of Georgia before this single but apparently she had a bit of a push, as "Georgia Barnes", a few years ago as a Kate Tempest-type on Domino records. Anyway she's using a mononym now and is instead mining the "wonky underwater Kylie" aesthetic of Tove Lo's "disco tits".

Brame & Hamo - Roy Keane - this was my pick of songs I'd not previously heard from the Mixmag list. It's basically just the Keane Brothers' version of Dancing In The Moonlight with a donk on it. Lots of fun and certainly less hackneyed than Toploader.

Delta Goodrem - Think About You - A lusty single with sound design that at once reminds me of Selena Gomez' Revival and parts of the last Kelela record (no, really), with one of my favourite dumb couplets of the year: "In a crowded bar, or a restaurant/Everybody doesn't know that you've got nothing on".

Yeah, that was one of my favourites when I went through the playlist.

I also fell in love with:

Fabiana Palladino - Shimmer
Musya Totibadze - Останусь с тобой
Rina Sawayama - Cherry
Faye Webster - Kingston
Le SuperHomard - Paper Girl
Claire Laffut - Verite
Vendredi sur Mer - Ecoute Cherie
Tessa Violet – Crush

These were all new discoveries for me that might get my vote. Also realised I'd totally been sleeping on the new Dumblonde song and the Lindstrøm/Ronika collaboration. No idea how I'm going to get my tracks list down to 25!

xxp nor did I, but it was one of the year's most pleasant surprises. There's a remix by Initial Talk that really accentuates its Mariah-in-the-90s-isms that's kinda fun too.

That Fabiana Palladino single is great - I think she and her brother have both served as touring bass players for Jessie Ware, but I wasn't aware she was releasing her own stuff.

zwei dunkel jungen (crüt), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:28 (six years ago)

I have an irrational aversion to unranked ballots. Fine with half and half, but I always feel like there is a definite difference in how many points I want to give to things near the top and things near the bottom.

my album ranking has been determined long in advance, with 'bolters' fitted in where appropriate (e.g. those aforementioned kyle gann or jean grae/quelle chris albums)

my singles ranking will be done but it's going to be an intense time. the last couple of days i've only be able to listen to a 2019 album, which hasn't helped. scary jokes campaign begins here

imago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:02 (six years ago)

I always end up doing a top 7 or 8 or so ranked and the rest unranked. I feel like deciding whether a song is my 10th most liked or 15th most liked is pretty much impossible anyway. I guess ideally what I would like is some sort of tiered ballot (something like my top 5 ranked, then a group of 10 unranked followed by another group of 10 unranked with less points)

silverfish, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:12 (six years ago)

The Bill Wurtz track in the master list was erroneously nominated (by me) as Mount Saint Helens Is Going To Blow Up but actually Going should be About, I don't suppose this makes any difference to anyone but I feel it should be recorded here

most of yuz probably already voted or at least have your list-to-shorten good to go, but if you haven't heard it yet, Sloppy Jane's 'Mindy' is one of the wildest songs I've heard in a while. Ping-pongs between bratty and brooding, with an uncomfortable, paranoia-inducing guitar bubbling underneath the whole time. The album, Willow, has quite a few highlights on it, but this track's my fave. (and apparently the track came out in 2017, but, uh, year of impact? or something? idk it's on the album and nobody even nominated it last year).

Just a warning, the video borders on not safe for work/life (especially if your work has a moratorium on delightful John Ennis cameos), and definitely don't look up anything from their live shows from work. I had only heard the music and started looking them up on lunch break a few weeks ago and whoops nudity.

I did 10 ranked, 15 unranked for both ballots this year. Last year I was disheartened to albums that I liked a lot and put on the bottom of my ballot only get like 5 or 6 points. So now they'll get more.

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 20:56 (six years ago)

just realized a couple days back that i never listened to the top 77 trax from last year -- i prob saw the number of good-but-not-great tunes in the top 10 and kept putting it off until i just forgot entirely. now that i've gone back and listened to it all i can happily say that as always there were plenty of gems that i wish i'd been able to discover organically thruout that year. several of the dance tracks especially, particularly those lower on the list. looking forward to what this year's poll brings!

I just wanna campaign for this one because it's not on Spotify and too good to fall under the radar:

Sky Ferreira - Voices Carry (Demo)

daavid, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:10 (six years ago)

There are 7 of the 9 songs from the robyn album nominated but the only one i like isn't. I think "ever again" knocks the rest out. Weird.

Nego do Borel - Me Solta - hyperactive funk carioca. The video is divisive for a variety of reasons but the song bangs

Heard this while out in Rio a few weeks back and have become obsessed with it.

Though the funk track I heard absolutely everywhere was MC L Da Vinte & MC Gury's "Parado no Bailão". I kept turning to my BF and saying "hey it's the track played on coke bottles again."

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:14 (six years ago)

Yes, Burna rules. I hope people aren’t sleeping on Simmy’s Tugela Fairy album. Gorgeous South African house, produced by Sun-El Musician (who had his own very good - and nominated - album, but Simmy’s is even better imo). I feel fans of (We Are) KING will find a lot to love here too.

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:43 (six years ago)

I've got the flu, so spent a good part of this afternoon listening to tracks bigged up in this thread. There are now six or seven strong new contenders for inclusion in my votes. I struggled last year with new music discovery, having devoted most of my time to building my DJ boxes with old music, so this was most welcome.

Sun-el was my best discovery from last year's rollout, and the album was my summer soundtrack. The sun-el thread then led me to Simmy, whose tracks are proving damned difficult to whittle down right now (but I've got it down to three).

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:38 (six years ago)

Damn, I guess I just figured someone (anyone?!) would've voted for the closest thing to a good New Order 2018 single - The Liminanas' "The Gift" (featuring Peter Hook!). Granted, it's not apex New Order, but definitely in the top end of "Waiting for the Siren's Call"-era New Order.

this is the first year i've nominated, and will vote soon. also my first time campaigning !

so, what is my favorite* track (song) of the year ? it's called "trouble" by a band called grapetooth. goofy wonky synth-pop with beastie boys-esque shout vocals, almost like the B boys did a half-assed approximation of a "low"-era bowie track with shaggy but compelling results. the music video is also a real joy imo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OOpnSldGpU

*not really it's just tons of fun and i haven't heard anybody talk about it round these parts

Spotify is blocked by local government where I am but I had cause to be in a neighbouring canton where they had spotify booths in many of the local bars, I thought I would give the playlist a cursory listen because playlists of huge numbers of songs is a minor form of incarceration. I started with something called cosmic sheldrake, don't know if i was unlucky but this is truly absymal, I've worked in an office before, I've heard that Imagine Dragon song that sounds like fascism about making packed lunches. And mates, this garbage is the lute playing cousin of that, the kind of compadre that is singing about a local river while making plans to pollute it with toxic dye via a management company in his brothers name

Many xps- loanwords in Chinese don't usually get new characters, so something with the same sound is assigned. grape tooth = putao ya = Portugal, so not Spain, which would be xibanya, 'west class tooth,' yes this is a bit off topic now

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it! I found it through a very unlikely acquaintance's sharing it and got kind of obsessed with a few of the songs on there, but I have no idea how he found it or how popular it is or much of anything about them honestly. i also nominated the job sifre EP het bestaan as an album b/c it's long enough to be a mini LP and every track is great. the one that got me obsessed with job sifre (and his amazing mix series on red light radio) is 'at least we try,' a long, churning, nasty thing that becomes quite beautiful by the end, with a swaying dub bassline and studio-esque melody

Twelves, Thursday, 24 January 2019 22:11 (six years ago)

Oh yeah, that's a banger! Hadn't heard about it before scanning through the nomination list, when I noticed Shy FX there, so of course I had to vote for it. Junglist massive 4eva!

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 January 2019 22:23 (six years ago)

Oh, I meant to apologise as well - I massively over-nominated in the albums field and ended up shifting a few votes over to the tracks, so I think I had about four write-ins. I actually don't really mind if they don't get counted, but as I said before, this list is my only EoY list, so I try to make it be what I actually want to remember from the year.

From these: one I've voted for, one I wouldn't mind seeing crop up, one I can't fucking stand, one I've never knowingly heard.

My suggestion for a joke top 10 entry is Peach Scone.

Incoming ballots might change some things, but there are definitely some songs which I didn't expect to make it and which are a nice surprise imho... also yes, without revealing too much, if the ballots received today don't change the scores significantly on the bottom we might indeed have another SZA scenario this year.

My initial guess was something featuring Dua Lipa or off the Black Panther soundtrack but on reflection probably the most likely outcome is ILM giving the hard 78 to 'This Is America'.
