Holding out hope for Lori McKenna and Ashley McBryde. "Girl Goin Nowhere" was one of my top tracks of the year, but I slept on the noms...

Nice ballot, Simon! Lots from my longlist, though I think we only have one actual track in common this time.

I'm not certain of my ballot as I failed to save a copy this year. If it's not difficult, I'd be very grateful if someone could post my ballot if it still exists!

i guess it makes more sense for me to put all of my new blurbs in here. there are a lot of them.

Mr. Twin Sister – “Jaipur” - kinda wish the instrumental went "level 2" at some point. when her voice kinda picks up and drops back down with no change it kinda just feels like a mistake somehow
MGMT – “Me and Michael” - i like a little pastiche from time to time but uhh i mean come on (editors note: i wrote this one before someone made the "top 77 pastiches" joke upthread so my crit is legit and not a pastiche of a previous crit) (editor's note 2 when i wrote that editor's note i thought i would be posting in the same thread not the afterparty thread)
Peach – “Silky” - i would like to know how they sampled/filtered those... lummi sticks? xylophones? whatever the melodic percussion parts. not enough to look it up tho, it's kinda the only part of the song that grabs me. voice and synths and drums not doing it for me
Beach House – “Lemon Glow” - Will M before listening to this song: "will this be the song where i finally 'get' beach house"
Will M after listening to this song: "no" (i mean its ok but)
Kasper Marrot – “Keflavik” - this is pleasant (editors note: i think i meant to write more here... uhh let's listen again.... this is pleasant. shit i already wrote that)

The Beths – “Little Death” - whoa hello, this is v v good! such a good voice, kinda hop along vibes but with those big rumbly drums, sick sick sick, god is bowling
Doja Cat – “Mooo!” - yall made my number one come below this milkshake duck-ass mirror-universe eurovision-on-weed song and im mad at all of you. top 77 fucking anime betrayals
Simmy – “Umahlalela” - i am enjoying this, but not as much as......
Simmy featuring Sun-El Musician – “Ubala” - oh wow, ok! this is, oooooh, this is good, i like this piano! see sometimes things can sound like things from the past without sounding exactly like them. take note, every other song in the top 77 this year. it's like a better version of the music from the mizuguchi video games. fuck now i wanna play tetris to this song SO BAD!
Hatchie – “Sure” - this sounds like a lot of things i like, but... err, kinda just makes me wanna listen to those things :/

Valee featuring Jeremih – “Womp Womp” - one of the more likely songs i'll put in a playlist and listen to too much in 2019. effortless cool is hard to pull off and this basically does
Let’s Eat Grandma – “Donnie Darko” - cmon man, seriously with this artist/song name? re: song: i will need the appeal explained to me
Tracey Thorn – “Queen” - i didn't know she was still making stuff, cool! sounds a lil like chers believe but for a world that has seen the movie Drive (this is not necessarily a complaint)
Khalid featuring 6lak and Ty Dolla $ign – “OTW” - kinda phased out for the first 2 mins and came to like "was... was that all chorus until now?" it sounds nice but it's v samey
Tirzah – “Holding On” - wasn't sure how i was gonna dig it when they started playing 3 blind mice on a default synth setting but this one really comes together nice! i really like how clear her voice comes thru, it's a low key wonderful voice. if other songs are similar i could for sure see myself getting into this (in a way i didn't with e.g. nite jewel b/c i only liked one song)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:26 (six years ago)

dang, this was the only stuff i voted for that placed?
Jon Hopkins – Emerald Rush
Kacey Musgraves – High Horse

Well, maybe I'll do better with albums. Here are the unloved:
Andrew Bird – Bloodless
Charli XCX – Focus
Ariana Grande – God is a Woman
Cardi B – Be Careful
Cassie – Don’t Play it Safe
DJ Koze with Roisin Murphy – Illumination
Freddie Gibbs and 03Greedo – Death Row
Future – Walk on Minks
Gabriel Garzón-Montano – Golden Wings

THERE ARE SO FUCKING MANY AND THERE'S ONE SINGLE BROKEN BBCODE TAG AND I CAN'T FIND IT

oh i found it maybe? ANYWAY, dear thesinglesjukebox.com, i am available on request:

Donato Dozzy – “Cleo” - this is definitely a song i woudn't mind being 20 mins long so i can just hang out in it a while
Octo Octa – “Beam Me Up (To the Goddess Mix)” - I kinda wanna hear the stuff that is same genre but like nobody liked or cared abt so i can compare top 50 material to top nothing material...? in prev years i really feel like the bobbins MOVED me more yknow?
Marie Davidson – “Work It” - ok yeah she sounds exactly like several ppl i know in mtl so this gets automatic warm fuzzy points from me and its p funny and sharp too.
Lizzo – “Boys” - hahaha i think about the line that's like "little bitty boys, mississippi boys" from time to time and laugh. so great. the blurb saying james murphy doing missy elliott doesn't feel quite OTM but now i really want a "work it" dfa remix. imagine? anyway, lizzo is good, "boys" >>>> "girls" from last year in a WALK and yes im comparing bc of the names
The 1975 - “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” - NOTHANKSNOTHANKSNOTHANKS

The 1975 – “Give Yourself a Try” - joy division records are literally still available AND streaming on spotify, why do you do this to yourselves jesus fucknig christ
Christine and The Queens featuring Dam-Funk – “Girlfriend” - i like this one more than the last one, still kinda feeling like 2018's pastiche obsession is emptier than any year before it tho. maybe the light in my heart just went out in 2018 or something. i really feel like i have heard all of this before and HOLY FUCK, I DID NOT MEAN TO MAKE THIS SOUND LIKE I AM QUOTING WONDERWALL, DID I JUST HAVE A STROKE?
Rae Sremmurd featuring Juicy J – “Powerglide” - i love strings like this lmao it makes everything sound so ~important~. rae sremmurd is exactly the same thing since the first one but that's still a p good thing. i hate that they are doing an offshoot of the fast and furious movies with the rock and statham as "hobbes and shaw" or whatever but we AREN'T getting a sequel tree based on tokyo drift. i am gonna write a script and call it FAST AND FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT: POWERGLIDE: ORIGINS and it's going to have 3-4 audio cues for this song to play. i'm gonna be rich. i don't even have a driver's license! i just hustle
Robyn – “Honey” - hey she made it! i wanted to vote for one of her songs, but it was missing u... surprised tihs one placed and not that one!! (i mean it ain't over yet but y'know)
Eris Drew – “Hold Me (T4T Embrace Mix)” - is it worth it lemme work it put my thing down flip it and reverse it from your fliminipit oh yeah cmon from your fliminipit oh yeah cmon (could they have picked a MORE DISTRACTING SAMPLE?)... anyway i was bored until the breakbeat and the guitar came in, now i am kind of amused, wish it didn't take 2 mins, i almost bailed

Kacey Musgraves – “Slow Burn” - ahhhhh ok i think i "get it" now re: kacey musgraves, this is good. this is v v v charming. love the beijing part, really perfect encapsulates that moment where you're so out of time that you think about what time it is somewhere else to kinda put yourself into context (and in doing so alienate yrself temporally even more) -- that's 100% a "just me" thought but fuck it
Empress Of – “When I’m With Him” - huh??? isn't this another song i heard before??? what other song does the chorus sound exactly like? help
Pinkfong – “Baby Shark” - i use a juul and play pokemon go and i still wanna make fun of all of you
Lana Del Rey – “Mariners Apartment Complex” - i always v much like these good lana del ray songs, but it always weirds me out when i think like, there are ppl in this world who stan for her like i stan for mitski. what is your life like ldr stans? i can only imagine you spend hours a day crying in a flowy dress near a fan or something. also listening to this song on spotify right now, does it sound this weird/compressed in every format or just here? song is great but her voice is just squished into unlistenableness
Pusha T – “If You Know You Know” - the part at the beginning where every line ends with boy just makes me think of born slippy lmao. i love when the melody comes in tho, perfect time and v nice. i dunno kanye still has it sometimes imo

Krystal Klear – Neutron Dance” - i don't get it, how is this new order? it's like calling give yrself a try the best joy division song of 2018. neutron dance, good name, this is the jimmy neutron of songs (you right now: "what does that even mean?" me right now: "something something death of the author, my blurb is like an ontario license plate, it is YOURS TO DISCOVER")
Julia Holter – “I Shall Love 2” - thank god she didn't make any mistakes, with all that delay we'd be hearing aobut it for minutes!!! haha jk everyone this is a good song shouts to holter skolter. this song sounds like she layered 6 different song intros on each other and it works somehow.
Sheck Wes – “Mo Bamba” i drafted mo bamba on every one of my fantasy basketball teams this year, and in my nba2k19 game, and i am losing in all of them, and no regrets because this song FUCKIN RULES. i hope ali eventually showed up with the motherfucking dope :S
Rosalía – “Pienso en tu mirá” - *extremely YouTube reaction video voice* ohh... ohh!! *says nothing for 30 seconds, bopping head* what is this? this is-- *stops talking again; 15 more seconds pass; rudely pauses song* man i really like this one. what language is this? i love it. it's perfectly enough of everything, never not enough nor too much *abruptly stars song again mid-chorus* yes. this was a good recommendation. thanks for watching ilx! *inset of me listening to the other Rosalia song in the top-right*
Rosalía – “Malamente” hmm, OKAY, OKAY... *solemn head bopping* okay, this is-- yeah! this is nice. i-- i like this. *very serious face* you know, I think I like the oth-- *pauses song* sorry, i know how mad you guys get when i tlak over the song too much. i think i like the other one more. *resumes song; inset of me angrily juuling to baby shark appears in top right*

Kacey Musgraves – “High Horse” - weirdly this sounds less like a country person trying to do a cross-genre thing and more like a pop person who had country explained to them in a tweet trying to reproduce country music. i'll have to listen again in a few days now that i kinda know what it is so i'm not surprised by it / making this face >:/
Kero Kero Bonito – “”Only Acting” - ahh yes good someone made "too many cooks" into a pop song (i rly dig this tho)
Mitski – “Nobody” - i've been big and small and big and small and big and small and still nobody loves me ;;;;;;;;;_______;;;;;;;;
Janelle Monáe – “Make Me Feel” - it's good, but like........... why wouldn't i just listen to the source material? am i just old and shitty now???? it used to feel like all of the pastiche has more thna one reference point before, maybe, and now it's just one reference point? i fuckin blame the 1975 for this
Jessie Ware – “Overtime” - ok but actually this is the kind of pastiche i can get into. it definitely feels A BIT like a jock jam, but enough NOT like one that it's its own thing? thank u ilx for this one

Ariana Grande – “thank u, next” - perplexed by the love for this song
Ariana Grande – “No Tears Left to Cry” - not perplexed at all by the love for this song <3
Lana Del Rey – “Venice Bitch” - me: *has headphones that are better than $20 earbuds for, like, a week*
you:
me: IS IT JUST ME OR ARE THE VOCALS COMPRESSED

Ella Mai – “Boo’d Up” - holy shit i am out of touch, i thought it was 78'd at this point for sure. great song!!! it was one of my last cuts from the top 25 and one of the ones that hurt the most tbh. prob would've placed in my top 01 if i hadn't listened to it so much over the year and burnt out on it a bit? lmao at the brit plot twist tweet
The 1975 – “Love It If We Made It” - i could not have wanted to not like this song anymore, and yet, i listened to it so many times. i like it in spite of it being awful and anyone form real life who i show it to judges me. it's like the cum town of songs, in that sense
Childish Gambino - This Is America - thanks to this song, i got a trivia question right about Oaxaca once
Peggy Gou – “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)” - never change, ilx *wipes tear* this is my first listen and it has been called the inspector norse of 2018 in the thread. DO I AGREE? hmmmmm *5 min later* mmm no, it is its own thing and that is good and it is good. a worthy face champion, the people's champion, beating the heelish antics of the 1975 starring an adult man who calls himself matty. yes i will be listening to this song a good 100+ more times this year! thanks!!

Here's the tunes in my ballot, they were ranked but I forgot to save the ranked list, so they're in alphabetical order. "Koskematon" was my #1 on the ranked list too, though.

Bolded the ones that didn't place:

Adikia ft. Mon-Sala, Sofa, Donatella, F & Yas Lo - Koskematon
AK - Vlexaa
Barbara Panther - Feminine
Bucie & Mpumi - Soz'Uphinde
Chaka Khan - Like Sugar
Dladla Mshunqisi - Pakisha

Donato Dozzy – Cleo
Eris Drew - Hold Me (T4T Embrace Mix)
Fever Ray - Wanna Sip (Olof Dreijer Remix)
Heavy K - Ndibambe
Hollie Cook - Stay Alive
Janelle Monáe - Screwed
Liisanpuisto - Itse teossa
Los Ángeles Azules ft. Natalia Lafourcade - Nunca Es Suficiente
Nao - Drive and Disconnect
Neneh Cherry - Natural Skin Deep
Niniola - Saro

Octo Octa - Beam Me Up (To the Goddess Mix)
Rap Against Dictatorship - Prathet Ku Mee
Roberta ft. Lady Blacktronika - Pain & Pleasure

Rosalía - Malamente
Shy FX ft. Lily Allen & Stamina MC - Roll The Dice
Simmy - Umahlalela
Yemi Alade - Issokay
Zûg - Felicidad

I was a bit surprised Nao nor Neneh Cherry didn't make it to the 77, hopefully they'll do better in the albums poll... Their albums were pretty much my favourite pop records of the year, alongside Monáe.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:02 (six years ago)

I would never have pegged (ahem, sorry) 'Itgehane' for number one song of the year, but I voted for it, and it's the best track in the top ten so I'm happy.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:03 (six years ago)

like "inspector norse" "itgehane" came out towards the beginning of the calendar year and just felt inescapable on dancefloors for the twelve months that followed. i think that type of lead time helps on polls like this for bobbins tracks. also it's extremely warm and feel-good

monotony, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:03 (six years ago)

"Itgehane" is nice, but I didn't like it enough to include it in my ballot, tho I'm definitely happy it won instead of some fartsy rock song. Still, it makes me wonder if ILX ever gets tired of this specific kind of retro sound in dance music, I certainly have.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:08 (six years ago)

it's a beautiful sparkling construction, glassy network of bell sounds otm

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:09 (six years ago)

I'm listening to the Peggy Gou again and still not really getting it.

Without wanting to use the phrase 'wall-paper music', I feel like this arch, head-noddy vibe has been done to death. The combination of Gou's detached delivery and the two-chord keys scream 'pastiche' to me - a takeoff of mid-2000s hipster house culture or the kind of music that got played in trendy city bars as an aural cushion.

Listening closer, I'll say it is wonderfully layered and there's some quite nice bubbly 303 stuff, but track of the year?

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:28 (six years ago)

i imagine the secret keys to Itgehane would emerge if you heard it out in the wild enough but that's just not my experience. it's good but i don't like it as much as six other electro tracks that charted far lower.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:33 (six years ago)

I remember back in 2012 thinking that "Inspector Norse" was really great and nice and bouncy but being slightly surprised at all the praise, and then I spent the next five years watching it blow up dancefloors and fill everyone thereon with such joy.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Itgehane" has a pretty long shelflife actually.

See now Inspector Norse had (and still has) instant appeal for me.

Midnight Starring is very cool. I feel like I could overload on SA house - most of what I hear is either very much in this style or more like Sun-El Musician, but there's usually some sort of curveball that sets each track apart. Busiswa is amazing.

Weirdly I voted for most of the things listed as missing from the top 177 playlist. Curious how they fared within that 78-177 block...

Thanks, btw, for all your toil ulysses, Moka and seandalai!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:09 (six years ago)

Almost every song in that pop category rocks harder than The 1975.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 1 February 2019 00:16 (six years ago)

kind of side-eyeing "Spanish Language" as a genre, but then I organize my music geographically so...

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:19 (six years ago)

well, it was either that, "Latin," or "Global" and then fold in the K-Pop and Afropop and none of those things felt appropriate. I suppose I coulda gone with "Flamenco" but then that's just Rosalía and nothing else!
I hear you though. I could use better definitions when it comes to some of this stuff.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 1 February 2019 00:23 (six years ago)

Actually it was interesting to run through the list and think about which other languages were represented. I miss, but am too lazy to reproduce, lex's geographic breakdown that he'd always have ready right at the end

great poll as always! i haven't gotten to the top ~20 or so yet but i can hold off for a little bit since as usual it looks to be the most boring part of the poll, at least based on the ones i know (yes i know some of the ones i voted for made it up there). whytf do ppl enjoy that particular mitski song. props to the pollrunners, voters and moka for the terrific graphics!!

last thoughts for now: both ariana grande songs that placed in the top 10 deserve to have been 78'd and are only impressive as seamlessly assembled, hyperefficient industry products. (yes i know i voted for a different ariana song that could also be described similarly.) i am starting to get sick of the 1975, the 'poptimist ;)' band for rockists, but alas one of my few heterosexual male friends has recently notified me that he really loves the new album (unsure if he'd heard any of the previous ones) so i guess i'll have to listen to it in full since i can't afford to lose any of those these days. i like "boo'd up" okay (not as much as "trip") but am sometimes perplexed by how little justification ppl seem to give for why they supposedly love it so much. surprised in a good way at how many ppl in the rundown enjoyed "long as i live" despite never having heard it before -- do turn on a grown-folks r&b station sometime! "before i do" not placing last year was a fucking disaster.

seamlessly assembled, hyperefficient industry products

Leaving aside any general objection to this kind of description one might have, it seems to me that one can no longer (if one ever could) say from a production/creation standpoint that this description applies to "No More Tears Left To Cry" or "Thank U, Next" more readily than it does to much else studio-created "pop" in the broad sense - e.g. including, say, Wizkid.

What perhaps marks out Ariana, and these two singles in particular, is not anything about them as products in isolation but rather the systems of meaning into which they are received - their ready memefication (people posting instagram picks of themselves on profile in greyscale with a burst of rainbow light; the immediate sloganisation of "thank u, next"), largely made possible by ariana's status as the people's diva and locating her in a relationship of both similarity with and divergence from beyonce (sweaters with pink "surfboard" slogans; "I woke up like this"). You might describe the way they enter the new media slipstream as "seamless" and "hyperefficient" but there's nothing interchangeable with other pop products about those qualities.

It seems to me that if one was going to criticise them ("thank u, next" in particular) it would be to argue that much of their appeal is premised on these contextual effects, without which they're (it would be argued) weaksauce not hotsauce.

But since one does not have to divorce the songs from those effects, I ranked "thank u, next" pretty high up my list.

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2019 04:04 (six years ago)

It’s also just a lazy description — you can literally hear the “seams” in “NTLTC,” that’s partly why it’s so compelling and unusual.

i stan corrected (morrisp), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:10 (six years ago)

(It repeatedly employs an abruptly/harshly clipped vocal hook!)

i stan corrected (morrisp), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:15 (six years ago)

kind of amazing that any "industry product" description of ariana's work, ESPECIALLY thank u next and no more tears to cry ignores the terrorist attack that intersected with her life only a year and a half before. both those songs are easily read and recognizable as deeply human responses. pop can be commercial and honest and it's silly to refuse to acknowledge that.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:37 (six years ago)

yeah I def reacted to "no tears..." specifically with that context in the front of my mind

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:38 (six years ago)

and the association is still there

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:38 (six years ago)

Tirzah – “Holding On” - wasn't sure how i was gonna dig it when they started playing 3 blind mice on a default synth setting but this one really comes together nice! i really like how clear her voice comes thru, it's a low key wonderful voice. if other songs are similar i could for sure see myself getting into this (in a way i didn't with e.g. nite jewel b/c i only liked one song)

― they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.)

This was one of my favorite songs of the year and one of my favorite albums of the decade. If I were a musician this would be the kind of album I’d love to create. It sounds like two good friends having fun with a 4-track and most of the time that’s the sort of vibe I look for in music.

Thursdays too forks got up early
and posted results in the blueblack cold,
then with jittery hands that ached
from perhaps an office job, who knows, made
ilxor hearts blaze. Everybody thanked Moka.

I’d wake and hear the votes splintering, breaking.
When the receptions were warm, he’d taunt us with fake-outs,
and slowly I would compose and then delete posts,
fearing the chronic angers of ilm.

Speaking indifferently to him,

kind of amazing that any "industry product" description of ariana's work, ESPECIALLY thank u next and no more tears to cry ignores the terrorist attack that intersected with her life only a year and a half before. both those songs are easily read and recognizable as deeply human responses. pop can be commercial and honest and it's silly to refuse to acknowledge that.

i was going to post a glib suggestion that everyone stop 'overreacting' to my 'obviously' unserious quip but thank you for reminding me of this. y'all, i'm really sorry i went there. in retrospect i'm a bit ashamed i did. i hope i'll do better.

dyl, Friday, 1 February 2019 06:00 (six years ago)

lol at "The Middle" only getting 36 points. One of the most ubiquitous songs around for at least part of 2018.

First time hearing Black Dresses and they’re great. Where do you usually discuss them in here? Is there an esoteric thread I’m missing?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 1 February 2019 07:05 (six years ago)

We haven't started a time-travel thread (i.e. weird/alt shit) this year yet but there's a dedicated BD thread basically: OUT OF FLUX WITH THE UNIVERSE: the canada trans electropop scene

new album in 4 days!

Uhhh any link to the stats yet? I didn't save my ballot locally. If not I'll just post my ballot here after the albums results I guess. One thing I do recall is that probably more than half my tracks list placed, which is an ILM first for me.

Thank you poll runners for another great poll! Electro/bobbins and afropop selections again held the best surprises for me - work kept me busy throughout 2018 so I mostly stuck with my comfort genres.

I went from mild indifference to the 1975 to active dislike throughout the rollout, thank fuck Peggy Gou saved us all.

Weighted ballot:

Mitski & Xiu Xiu - Between the Breaths
Peggy Gou - It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)
NCT U - Baby Don't Stop
Red Velvet - Bad Boy
SHINee - Good Evening
Tracey Thorn - Queen
Lucy Dacus - Night Shift
Wednesday Campanella - The Bamboo Princess

Ariana Grande - No Tears Left To Cry
Let's Eat Grandma - Donnie Darko
Sunmi - Siren
(G)I-DLE - HANN (Alone)
Hyolyn - See Sea

Kimbra & DAWN - Version of Me
Robyn - Baby Forgive Me
Mariah Carey - GTFO
Melody's Echo Chamber - Desert Horse
Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury
Keyakizaka46 - Moumorihekaerouka?
Troye Sivan ft. Ariana Grande - Dance To This

DJ Koze - Pick Up
Adrianne Lenker - symbol
Rina Sawayama - Cherry

Simmy - Umahlalela
William Doyle - Millersdale

Lighting a candle for NCT U's "Baby Don't Stop", beloved favourite of K-pop thread regulars, absolutely no traction anywhere else.

Roz, Friday, 1 February 2019 07:25 (six years ago)

Wow, I'm positively surprised that two other people besided me voted for "Koskematon", that's two more than I expected for a feministi rap tune (mostly) in Finnish. :)

Sad to see that only one other person besides me voted for Nao's "Drive and Disconnect"... For some reason I thought she was well-liked here? Hopefully the album'll do better in the poll.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2019 07:35 (six years ago)

eh these are the sad ones - each had 50 points / 1 voter:

Julia Jacklin - Head Alone
Kacey Musgraves - Love Is A Wild Thing

Noga Erez ft. Sammus - Cash Out
Sauti Sol - Short and Sweet
Sharda ft. Shanique Marie - Wanna Know

They Might Be Giants - Last Wave (Demo)
Tirzah - Guilty

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Friday, 1 February 2019 07:40 (six years ago)

Why does Christine & The Queens appear twice in the artists results (41 & 50)?

Dan Worsley, Friday, 1 February 2019 07:46 (six years ago)

well, it was either that, "Latin," or "Global" and then fold in the K-Pop and Afropop and none of those things felt appropriate. I suppose I coulda gone with "Flamenco" but then that's just Rosalía and nothing else!
I hear you though. I could use better definitions when it comes to some of this stuff.

― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), 1. helmikuuta 2019 2:23

I think it would make sense to simply put them in the appropriate genres, for example the Rosalía tracks clearly are (among other things) pop, so why not file them under that? Lumping her with Latinx artists and styles is especially problematic, since she's from Spain and does pop music inspired by Spanish idioms - I think this kind of thinking might be a bit offensive to Latin Americans, who obviously have a very different and rich history of popular music styles, and many of whom have no great love for Spain, for obvious reasons.

For example, my wife (who's Costa Rican) found it problematic that in my record shelves, arranged by genre, I had a separate shelf for "world" music, i.e. records in non-Western genres. So I'd have Fela Kuti albums there sitting next so Elis Regina and Sheila Chandra and Johnny Pacheco. And she's right, "world" is not a genre and lumping all these artists together is quite Eurocentric, so nowadays I try to organise them according to their actual genres.

My album poll should be more conventional.

Nabozo, Friday, 1 February 2019 09:46 (six years ago)

nice list. I feel bad about Sun El too. I just didn't think anything on the album was quite (quite!) up to the majesty of Akanamali, but Sonini and a few others came very close.

Tuomas, first off: I don't think I knew you were married! Mazel! I've been on this board too long; still think of everybody as being in the same state in their twenties that they were when i first came on board.

Second, I don't argue with any of your points there; my designations of genre there follow the radio standards of the early aughts moreso than my own listening tastes and were intended at least partially as didactic enough to incite just the sort of comments you made. Certainly part of what makes Rosalía's work so interesting is how it takes an out-of-the-pop-sphere style and infuses it with the contemporary... but I don't think it would get pop radio airplay stateside. Influx of Bad Bunny and BTS and a bunch of other things may be changing that now tho'!

And yes, "global" is increasingly unhelpful as a demarcation of style, if it ever was. Classifiers gotta classify!

Frederik B, Friday, 1 February 2019 11:52 (six years ago)

My favourite song in the Top 177 that I hadn't heard before was 'Dancing With Character' by Rae Morris.

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 11:58 (six years ago)

"Idol" not placing is just the usual kpop problem of 'too niche and too much vote splitting between the few fans here'. even though BTS have had actual US chart success and even some radio play now i get the impression that's more from just having a huge cult fanbase rather than truly having made it into the mainstream as anything more than a fringe presence

ufo, Friday, 1 February 2019 12:57 (six years ago)

I was taking some agents round a private school residence a few months ago, and judging from the posters everywhere, BTS are the biggest group in the world right now (or possibly there were a load of Korean girls staying there)

I have very faint hopes that the Rae Morris album might place next week.

Nabozo:

Fuxxor Quotient = the proportion of tracks on your ballot that were in Pitchfork's top 100. I believe the term derives from 'corny indie fuXXor', which is a very old ILM in-joke / term of abuse / badge of honour. (Search old threads for 'corny indie' for examples.)

Antifuxxor Ratio = your ILM Hivemind score divided by your Fuxxor Quotient. A high ratio means your taste is much closer to that of ILM than to that of Pitchfork. Infinite antifuxxor ratio = supposedly a good thing.

Blood Sausage Index = The average points total for tracks that didn't appear on the most well known online/critics' EOY lists. Essentially, whether you love songs that nobody outside of ILM cares or knows about. I can't remember why 'blood sausage' though.

xxxp

Late to discussion re appeal of "Itgehane": I agree with characterizations such as "extremely warm and feel-good", "beautiful sparkling construction" etc, BUT would add that as well as being top bobbins it also works p well as an actual words-and-tune song. (The Orielles cover really brought this out for me.) This most likely broadened its appeal even more, I'd guess.

I’m late to this thread, so I saw this post only now, but you're in luck: I posted a country breakdown in the rollout thread yesterday. Here it is, in a slightly tweaked version (cheers, Tuomas!):

I know you’ve all been waiting for this one, a valuable tradition started (afaik) by Lex, here it is, beter late than never...

YOUR *UPDATED* OFFICIAL COUNTRY BREAKDOWN:

AUSTRALIA (4): Hatchie, The Chats, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Laura Jean
CANADA (3): Marie Davidson, Peach, Drake
COLOMBIA (5⁄6): [Cardi B ft. Bad Bunny &] J Balvin (⅓), Kali Uchis (½)
DENMARK (1): Kasper Marott
FRANCE (1½): Christine and the Queens [ft. Dâm-Funk] (1½)
GERMANY (4⅓): Die Wilde Jagd, [Talaboman/] Superpitcher (⅓), Kim Petras, DJ Koze, Helena Hauff
HONDURAS (½): Empress Of (½)
IRELAND (2): Krystal Klear, Roísín Murphy
ITALY (1): Donato Dozzy
JAPAN (1): Mitski (2 x ½)
NEW ZEALAND (2): The Beths (2)
NIGERIA (1): Starboy ft. Wizkid, Terri, Spotless & Ceeza Milli
PUERTO RICO (⅓): [Cardi B ft.] Bad Bunny [& J Balvin] (⅓)
SOUTH AFRICA (3): Simmy (ft. Sun-El Musician) (2); Prince Kaybee ft. Busiswa & TNS
SOUTH KOREA (2): Peggy Gou, Red Velvet

SWEDEN (1⅓): Robyn, Talaboman [/Superpitcher] (⅓)
UK (13): The 1975 (4), Ella Mai, Jessie Ware, Kero Kero Bonito, Tirzah, Tracey Thorn, Let’s Eat Grandma, Autechre, Jon Hopkins, Fabiana Palladino

Juicy J, [Christine and the Queens ft.] Dâm-Funk (½), Lizzo, Octo Octa, Khalid ft. 6LACK & Ty Dolla $ign, Valee ft. Jeremih, Doja Cat, Beach House, MGMT (2), Mr. Twin Sister (2); Natalie Prass, Hop Along, Cardi B [ft. Bad Bunny & J Balvin] (⅓), mewithoutyou, Toni Braxton, Soccer Mommy, Ravyn Lenae, Parquet Courts, Andrew W.K., Kali Uchis (½)

Of course, Drake cheated by crediting neither Big Freedia, nor 5th Ward Weebie, nor Lauryn Hill, and DJ Koze would have done well to credit Gladys Knight - but then again, US artists are overrepresented anyway \_(ツ)_/¯

Please report any mistakes or oversights to me, so I can do the whole damn thing over again. Thank U, next!

I don't think I've voted for it. I only vote for real music on the albums poll, the singles here are just for kicks.
*checks, no I lie, I did vote for it.

Nabozo, Saturday, 2 February 2019 21:27 (six years ago)

I only vote for real music on the albums poll, the singles here are just for kicks.

haha this is my approach too

⅋ (crüt), Sunday, 3 February 2019 07:20 (six years ago)

Albums are just singles with more extra tracks on them

saer, Sunday, 3 February 2019 07:53 (six years ago)

Most of the time, yes. Anyway, cheers to rob, breastcrawl and everyone else keeping the afro-caribbean threads rolling. Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 3 February 2019 08:30 (six years ago)

Spoilers: the albums poll has way more genre variety than the singles one and ilm delivers better results than most eoy lists

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 3 February 2019 09:54 (six years ago)

You're preaching to the choir :) I think that self-congratulation is probably exactly what gives us 1975 feasts though :P

Nabozo, Sunday, 3 February 2019 09:58 (six years ago)

this year's tracks poll just felt like there was barely any consensus at all so it was mostly just established ILM favourites doing well by default? at least compared to say the last two years which felt a little more unpredictable over the first few days

ufo, Sunday, 3 February 2019 10:03 (six years ago)

The albums poll is where it's at, though I'm pretty sure not a single one of my classical noms will place. Not that I did much in the way of campaigning, mind you.

pomenitul, Sunday, 3 February 2019 10:03 (six years ago)

My focus is totally on singles/individual tracks. Every year, there are at the very least 50 tracks that I could put on my tracks ballot with good conscience. Whereas with albums, there are only about a dozen that I’ve lived with enough throughout the year to confidently place them. This is purely a matter of priorities and time management. There’s many more albums that I know I like because I’ve listened to them once or twice (and I do fill up the rest of my ballot with those), or would/could like if I’d only make time for them, but first things first, you know, and the genres I (want and need to) listen to the most are heavily singles-focussed.

breastcrawl, Sunday, 3 February 2019 11:23 (six years ago)

Amen.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 3 February 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

(And of course, I’m missing out on a lot, but aren’t we all? As we speak, I’m listening to my “2018 catch-up albums” playlist, filled with albums that sounded by their recommendations (mainly here on ILM) like stuff I would like, and “Warrior Dance” by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids came up, and wow, just wow!)

breastcrawl, Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:10 (six years ago)

tracks poll > albums, idk why but it’s more exciting to me

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:14 (six years ago)

A nice thing about the tracks poll is that you can listen and comment on the rollout in real time (unless some hour-long ambient thing gets in). Albums are generally too long to do more than sample them. It also helped that I was hearing almost everything for the first time.

Still, I'm excited for the albums rollout.

jmm, Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:25 (six years ago)

Historically the tracks rollout makes for a better thread since people can listen to the songs more or less in real time, or at least do those end of the day round-ups, and talk about them so it tended to be the livelier one. (xpost)

Usually I'm with breastcrawl and longneck on tracks over albums, but this year I think I'm slightly more invested in my top albums than my top tracks? Plus if Burna Boy and Popcaan both place (latter is a little doubtful), the resulting list will better reflect my taste than the tracks did--it also helps that I got into a bunch of jazz last year. That said, I didn't even vote for a full 25 albums while culling my tracks ballot was as hard as it always is.

The whole Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids album is awesome!

rob, Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:37 (six years ago)

I'm more of a tracks person than an albums person in general but the albums poll has been consistently more diverse, surprising and interesting than the tracks poll for the last few years. And you can set up months' worth of listening from it.

Matt DC, Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:40 (six years ago)

Yes, as Simon might point out, it probably helps that you can't generally nominate multiple albums from a single artist

rob, Sunday, 3 February 2019 15:42 (six years ago)

Strong list this year. Of the tracks that I hadn't heard before (ie almost all of them) I particularly enjoyed Mo Bamba, Mariners Apartment Complex, Holding On, Powerglide, Donnie Darko, Womp Womp, Lemon Glow, Smoko, Nice For What, Girls On The TV and In My Dreams, so thanks to whoever nominated them and thanks to all the organisers.

not sure what the Ackamoor album's chances are. tbh I heard it so late in the year that I didn't even rank it very highly (see also: Simmy), but given its mix of jazz and afrobeat (singular) it could have wider appeal than some of the jazz I'm assuming is going to show

My comment above was half-trolling half-teasing, but since a conversation emerged I'll weigh in.
I appreciate >sum-of-their-parts albums just as I appreciate albums that go for bang / rely on track strength. No album that contains 3-4 bangers can be bad in my experience, and I prefer to tolerate filler next to greatness than settle for applied, well-crafted, consistent mediocrity. Many genres have always sit in-between being track-based or album-based (even dad-rock albums had their focus on hits for ex.) and that's maybe the ideal combination to have the best of both worlds. And nowadays we have this movement presenting pop more and more as albums, more and more perfected (well, it's not really new). Just as indie did, and ILM at least seems convinced or we wouldn't have it appear in the tracks poll. It's not easy and pointless to cut in the middle. So, based on the same genres and taste, I think I still get surprises and that pushes me to be flexible, like I almost get to choose how I want to experience and keep something.

I thought the 2017 tracks results were garbage, and 2018's tracks are a huge improvement. Also congrats to ILM on getting over your guitar phobia.

Slightly preferred 2017 I think? Had L'Rain, introduced me to Akrakabo. TBH I miss the days when Jute Gyte and Oranssi Pazuzu could just mosey on in amongst the pop-house

Oh and Blue Pedro ffs!

OK I've scrolled through last year's tracks 77. It's about 10x more interesting, diverse and fun as this year's imo

I don't recall any huge discoveries from last year's list, although the tracks results from every year as long as I can remember help me re-discover stuff I forgot. The big one from last year for me was "Girl Front."

billstevejim, Sunday, 3 February 2019 20:49 (six years ago)

lol i was listening to "girl front" when i opened this thread, such a good song

I got *extremely* lucky and found a sealed vinyl copy of Raveena’s “Shanti” EP on vinyl (filed under “S”, lol) for a few bucks. Released awhile back, purple wax, OOP R@RE! Eight tracks including Honey and...she is really, really good.

^ weirdly, this was released by VNYL, that bullshit subscription service from the “shady scams” thread (i think)

six months pass...

Heads up for anyone planning on voting in 2019 who doesn't quite feel plugged into that ILM vibe that I've been on the watchtower pulling tracks from all the yearly genre threads and organizing them by month. If you wanna take a blind stab at the past eight months of talked about music (or, you know, about the 75%-85% of it that shows up on spotify), give these 1100+ songs a go and you'll be zeitgeisty as can be:

13: Rosalía – “Pienso en tu mirá”

think this would've been #1 on my ballot if I'd heard it soon enough
