To get the thread rolling...

https://soundcloud.com/slow-life/sets/sl018-huerta-lounge-lizard-2

This is really broken beat bobbins, and I haven't even properly heard it because a certain online shop has very much mislead me about when my order would be ready, but it's already February and I want to start participating in these threads again.

Jeff Mills mistakenly releases another producer's track as his own

The first EP on Mills' new Str Mrkd sub-label contains a track by Julien H. Mulder, who had sent demos to the Detroit artist.

The first release on Jeff Mills' new Str Mrkd sub-label features a track by Julien H. Mulder mistakenly labelled as one of Mills' own.

The EP was meant to feature four new tracks from Mills, but upon release it was discovered that one of the tracks was actually by Julien H. Mulder, who had previously sent demos to the Detroit artist.

"In a rare mistake, it was selected for this release as Mills believed it was a track that he produced from his past recordings," Mills' label Axis Records said in a Facebook statement.

"Mills often receives demo tracks from artists seeking licenses on Axis Records," continued the statement. "As he reviews tracks, he sometimes makes a CD containing samples of tracks of himself and others to test while out on tour. On an unmarked CD and because of the similarity in production style, Mills mistook this track as something he had made a while ago and proceeded to add this to the release."

Axis has since reached an agreement with Mulder, who will be properly credited on all future represses of the EP.

Mulder is a Swedish techno producer with a handful of releases under his belt, including records for Midnight Shift and Mensch.

Not sure how I'd feel if an artist I was into released one of my demos as their own work

paolo, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 09:49 (six years ago)

I have so many questions about this Mills thing. How can a person not remember making a track and then not ask where the master files have gone?

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 11:38 (six years ago)

Maybe it's different if you're making tracks out of hardware jams? Easier to forget something that was made in a day than pieced over weeks, and for tracks to sound similar based on the gear?

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 16:29 (six years ago)

yeah I'm thinking that Mills would do some hardware jams, maybe do a quick edit and throw it on a cd along with other stuff for cdj sets or road listening

so you end up with a bunch of cds that have completely unlabeled tracks and maybe a note jotted down with the track number and what the track sounds like

the master file is the cd track, might be tweaked a little before pressing

mh, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 16:56 (six years ago)

Considering how many tracks JM has already released that are basically variations on a specific style, I wouldn't surprised if he's made literally countless anonymous tracks (I don't know much about how pressing works but, would you ever press a track straight from a CDR wav or whatever?). That said, I dunno if I'd be more annoyed or flattered in this case.

ed.b, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:59 (six years ago)

was it a preorder

Yes. Not surprised at delays, but I ordered it when it was "expected Dec 31" šŸ˜‘ I think they're doing the delayed-plane thing where they'll keep postponing it for just as long as people will wait.

but the Kovacs....i have to just say: the disembodied, "airy" female voice robot thing is super played out. i feel like the only producer who uses it to good effect sometimes is Stott, and even then I sometimes punch the forward button when certain tracks of his come up.

Funky Isolations (jed_), Thursday, 11 July 2019 21:08 (six years ago)

. That goes for SUED as well.

strange because the dj python reminds me of SUED, both in that it's sometimes not clear whether this is a 33 or a 45 (though I think only intentional in the case of the SUED releases) and also just in that a lot of SUED releases sound like this dj python, particularly sw.'s "reminder" series

the late great, Friday, 12 July 2019 01:31 (six years ago)

I think there are definite connections between what dj python is doing and what sw. is up to, regardless of the difference in tempo

We need to have a serious discussion about Bawrut. Between his remix of Nicola Cruz's "Espiritu de Proteccion" last year, then "Pioneers" and "Piano & Piano" circa NYE, and now "Pronto Arpeggio" and (especially) "Shooree", he's turned into this world-conquering combination of mid-00s Ame and KiNK,; ridiculously monumental banger after ridiculously monumental banger.

with regard to Tim's post a week or so ago re: Bawrut, I think he is someone worth talking about. Personally I think he's very skilled in production terms but I find his tracks annoying, mostly. Shooreee is the one that I like. For most of the others I've heard, one listen is enough. Some of them don't bear a full listen to the end of the track tho. I just get annoyed by them.

The Robbenspierre track shows definite potential.

viborg, Saturday, 23 November 2019 02:27 (five years ago)

Oh yeah as far as the new Midland I'm more partial to Tortuga from the new EP but none of them are missteps. I was thinking about posting his recent outstanding NTS mix but haven't paid attention to charts of top rated DJs lately and don't know if he's too obvious a choice.

viborg, Saturday, 23 November 2019 02:36 (five years ago)

Another Robbenspierre, from a 12" coming out next month on new Italian label Threads

if ur like 'banger should be cancelled' and 'the midland mix is too obvious a choice' please do everyone else a service and don't go to parties thx

cheese canopy (map), Monday, 25 November 2019 19:40 (five years ago)

and the aroy d / ma spaventi track is a very pretty sad person who doesn't like to dance track that i like for my running playlist not for the club unless i want to feel like a loser. sorry guys just sprinkling a little salt out here with tongue in cheek got to keep the sidewalk from freezing.

cheese canopy (map), Monday, 25 November 2019 19:44 (five years ago)

at least be civilized and use an asterisk

b*nger

djdirtbagstyle, Monday, 25 November 2019 20:00 (five years ago)

bunger?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 18:39 (five years ago)

binger = a bong hit

I am indeed a loser if that was ever in question, cheesy canopy. And yeah it's true I don't really go to parties any more. The scene here sucks and often when I do go I get the "what's dad doing here?" look.

As for b*nger, I was genuinely under the impression that there was a consensus that it was so trite as to be practically meaningless. Or we could just call every song we like "epic" and it would denote exactly the same value. Whatever, call it what you like as long as someone keeps putting up a little good music here aside from all the dad rock that now dominates ILM.

viborg, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 22:31 (five years ago)

unfortunately reasons of taste are not a valid basis for cancellation, check the bylaws!

j., Wednesday, 27 November 2019 22:45 (five years ago)

it’s true, we used to sing in college ā€œbing bing every time i come around your city bing bing sack of weed worth about a sixty bing bingā€

djdirtbagstyle, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 23:44 (five years ago)

that was 20 yrs ago would be funny if they still said that in college

Wasn't that 30 years ago? Or is there some new slang I'm not hip to.

I'd guess 'bing bing' is the sound a beeper makes.

I really like this format, actually.

I was feeling bummed about all the usual EOY list bullshit, but I'm on one of these playlists, which made me feel better, but also bad that I let list-making bullshit get to me like that.

it's a good approach! actually accessing the music and organizing it by overarching themes and showing off the range of a genre is like ten times more interesting than WHAT IS THE MOST CANONICAL SOUP OF ALL THE THOUSANDS OF SOUP ANYONE ATE THIS YEAR: AT NUMBER ONE....
