nxd, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 12:51 (six years ago)

Tough one, as usual. Either The Jewel in the Lotus, Country Life or Phaedra.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 12:54 (six years ago)

Or Red.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 12:55 (six years ago)

god there's so much amazing stuff here. but i'm going for lamb lies down on broadway, without hesitation.

J. Sam, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 12:57 (six years ago)

Notable absences - the best Hawkwind album, Hatfield & The North s/t and Lucio Battisti's Anima Latina.

*there's (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:01 (six years ago)

After balmy '73 this year maybe has a more reflective tone. The real end of the 60s comedown vibes.

*there's (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:07 (six years ago)

xpost yeah those are all great, especially the hatfield & the north album. re: hawkwind i'm more into warrior on the edge of time tho.

my fave Funkadelic album gets my vote here

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:11 (six years ago)

i'd add:
jorge ben - a tábua de esmeralda
jimmy webb - land's end
van morrison - veedon fleece
franco battiato - "clic"
harmonia - musik von harmonia
todd rundgren - todd
henry cow - unrest

J. Sam, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:13 (six years ago)

oh and sparks - kimono my house

J. Sam, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:14 (six years ago)

todd rundgren - todd

aye, would liked to have made room for them but i thought they might get zero votes and i really wanted my funk selections in

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:16 (six years ago)

Harmonia could have picked up votes, I reckon.

The Vangelis of Dating (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:18 (six years ago)

Anyway, I didn't vote in the last one because I couldn't make my mind up and there's absolutely no chance of me voting in this one.

The Vangelis of Dating (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:19 (six years ago)

give a vote to the one most likely to get zero votes then

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:28 (six years ago)

actually i cant see the gene clark getting a vote so do it for gene

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:29 (six years ago)

I first heard Inspiration Information when it was reissued in 2001 on a CD that also included half of Shuggie Otis's previous album Freedom Flight (including "Ice Cold Daydream" and "Strawberry Letter 23") as bonus tracks. That album would've easily gotten my vote, but without those songs I'll probably go with Gram, Gene, or Joni.

Lee626, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:39 (six years ago)

....or Stanley Clarke who I really like, but I find it hard ranking jazz albums alongside other genres; jazz is like its own thing.

Lee626, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

Court & Spark. no contest.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

Veedon Fleece is also the best Van album so yeah, weird thats not on here

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:43 (six years ago)

I saw that Shuggie Otis CD (on Luaka Bop) for 30p recently but left it because there was a stain on the booklet and I tend not to hang onto them if they're a bit manky.

Court & Spark

I really hope some of you check out this wonderful album which features a backing group of certain pfunk alumni inc Eddie and Bernie and the life and death suite is some of the most amazing music ever made.

Why are the King Crimson and Miles albums grouped into single options but the two Eno albums separate options? This is Red vs The Lamb vs Warm Jets for me. Might go with The Lamb for the number of times I've listened to it on long drives.

oh, shut up and listen, will you? (Sund4r), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

1. Radio City
2. Court & Spark
3. I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

Another great year, the first half of the '70s was such a great time for albums, I think there's maybe a drop-off at '75/'76 but I may well be wrong.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:53 (six years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult- Secret Treaties
Stevie Wonder- Fullfillingness First Finale

MUSIK VON HARMONIA YET ANOTHER MASSIVE OVERSIGHT

i listen to "here come the warm jets" more than any other album here so that one

Taking Tiger Mountain and Pretzel Logic are both tempting but I may have to vote for my favorite Bowie album.

o. nate, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:28 (six years ago)

interesting picks. i always thought of '74 as the last great year for prog, but when i go through my '74 i am finding a lot of soul as well. blue magic s/t, black heat's "no time to burn", george duke's "feel"... AND WHERE THE FUCK IS FULFILLINGNESS' FIRST FINALE? also, casablanca moon, kimono my house, _todd_

Ultiumately, I concur, korny.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:57 (six years ago)

I'm torn between Zuckerzeit, which is one of those albums that I always enjoy hearing no matter what, and (kind of surprisingly) On the Beach. The Fela is once again super tempting, I probably should have held out for Confusion tbh, which is colossal.

The Jorge Ben and Harmonia albums already mentioned would be my own most important additions along with Dadawah, Peace & Love and Keith Hudson, Flesh of My Flesh Blood of My Blood. This is also a foundational year for dub (Pick a Dub, Dub from the Roots, The Roots of Dub).

rob, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 16:06 (six years ago)

Eno will get my vote for 75 so I'll choose The Lamb for 74. It still feels wrong to not click On The Beach or Court & Spark

Big Star - Radio City
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge of Getting It On
Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel
Kraftwerk - Autobahn

Not a good year for this rockist (no Sabbath album!) but I will go with Parsons only slightly over Kraftwerk and a little above the rest.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 18:57 (six years ago)

Favorites here: the two Enos, Davis, On the Beach, I want to see the bright lights tonight, Court & Spark, They Say I'm Different, Confusion.
Wow, Autobahn is from 1974 ?
Rock Bottom I don't return to.

Where are Slapp Happy (seriously, for a krautrock and J.Mitchell fan !), At the Helm (East NY Ensemble de Music), Troppo (M. Garrick), Jolene, Veedon Fleece, I Can't stand the rain ?

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:00 (six years ago)

I voted for Davis cause Get Up with It is my favorite by him and cause you split Mr Jean Baptise de la Salle in two.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:02 (six years ago)

Eno, but doubtless most people who say that here will go for the wrong one

imago, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:03 (six years ago)

Oh yeah, and A tábua de esmeralda cause it's brilliant and Errare Humanum Est is a top 10 songs of all-time.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:05 (six years ago)

I went with my gut feeling on the King Crimson twofer, no regrets

There's my favourite Bowie, maybe my favourite Neil Young, totally amazing mindblowing stuff by Eno, Genesis, King Crimson, Roxy Music (and a wonderful Richard & Linda Thompson album as well).
But even if I am a massive fan of all of those and especially Bowie and Diamond Dogs IS my fave Bowie...
It's Gene Clark - No Other for me.

missed the Richard & Linda Thompson, that might have beaten Neil Young, but I'm happy with my choice.

other great reggae albums from '74:

King Tubby - Dub From the Roots
Keith Hudson & Family Man - Pick a Dub
Augustus Pablo - This Is Augustus Pablo
Burning Spear - Rocking Time

there are few albums as singular, as beautiful, as mysterious as “rock bottom” — i don’t know anything that sounds quite like it.

it also achieves an emotional depth that, before hearing it, i didn’t realize was possible in “rock” music.

a very important album for me. so it’s robert wyatt this year.

can never understand why that ragtag bunch of demos and neat ideas has so much more critical cachet than the ensuing full-bore rock masterpiece but I guess that's opinions eh!!!

imago, Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:09 (six years ago)

you can say what you want about HCTWJ but they aren't "ragtag demos"

Here Come the Warm Jets was recorded in twelve days at Majestic Studios in London during September 1973 by recording engineer Derek Chandler.

After recording the individual tracks, Eno condensed and mixed the instrumentation deeply, resulting in some of the tracks bearing little resemblance to what the musicians recorded during the session.

sold out in presale (sleeve), Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:11 (six years ago)

haha fine. it definitely sounds more 'try this, see what happens' than its successor, which feels very much of a piece and calculated to destroy me
