I opted not to do a videos ballot bc I didnt have strong memories of pretty much any of the videos, except for this one, which I remember seeing a lot at the time of & enjoying - the flaming squeegee and moving coffin both are embedded in my brain as quintessential beck imagery.

Yeah it’s probably my fave of the post-90s albums. Can’t remember if it made the cut in my ballot or not but I like “Volcano” a lot, probably his best version of that type of song imo. That acoustic version was a pleasant surprise, it’s cool he put that out, definitely superior versions of some tracks

...although I'll admit I still dont really get what people see in danger mouse or what he brings to the table as a producer, especially when it comes to beck, of all people - like having badfinger produce the beatles.

this quote is ridiculous but also funny imo:
In a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, Beck said of the album:
The whole concept of Mellow Gold is that it's like a satanic K-tel record that's been found in a trash dumpster, quite matter-of-factly. A few people have molested it and slept with it and half-swallowed it before spitting it out. Someone played poker with it, someone tried to smoke it. Then the record was taken to Morocco and covered with hummus and tabouli. Then it was flown back to a convention of water-skiers, who skied on it and played Frisbee with it. Then the record was put on the turntable, and the original K-Tel album had reached a whole new level. I was just taking that whole Freedom Rock feeling, you understand.

From wiki:
The album's cover is a photo of a Komondor, a rare Hungarian breed of dog with a heavy, corded coat. The original photo was shot by canine photographer Joan Ludwig (1914–2004) for the July 1977 issue of the American Kennel Club’s Gazette.

Same here - definitely some good songs but I've never been able to get into either of those albums properly.
― Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 12:11 (six years ago)
the Ktel quote above puts the appeal of the early material pretty well,I think. That was great, hadn't heard that. Also maybe you "had to be there" to some degree, throwing chicken in a bucketI find Odelay pretty tough to get through now. it's dated in a way most of his other work isn't, somehow. It's still fun but, I dunno very much of its time. The sound of being the coolest thing going in 1996? It's not exactly the Dust Brothers sound I'm talking about (have never gotten tired of Paul's Boutique)
― maffew12, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 12:34 (six years ago)
I rate Odelay less these days because the songs work if your patience extends to an album length of obscurantic readymades infused by hip-hop whereas Mellow Gold has recognizable love songs and skewed narratives in a folk tradition. That's partly why I like Guero's "Scarecrow": it melds the hip-hop and folk sensibilities.

You say that like it's a bad thing!
I get what you mean though. I rate Odelay higher but thats a good point about the difference between it & Mellow Gold, for all the clutter & sonic craziness most of the songs still have some identifiable narrative or lyrical point of view.
― One Eye Open, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 12:50 (six years ago)
I should've mentioned that I bought MG in 2002, years after Odelay, so I was more struck by their differences.
And, no, I didn't mean my criticism as dismissal -- I don't mind obscurantism.
― recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 12:55 (six years ago)
Midnite Vultures, then (ahem), is the perfect synthesis of Cool Beck and Don't Care Beck. Resulting in our one proper artifact of Party Down Beck.It should've gotten better reviews. People bashed it for not caring enough, for being silly while being funky. think what we could have had. You monsters. All of us.

Also maybe you "had to be there" to some degree, throwing chicken in a bucket
eh i didn't listen to mellow gold until 2002. can't say i immediately loved everything on it but the weird coherently-incoherent sensibility behind it + the tunes kept me coming back
― american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 12:58 (six years ago)
mellow gold turns to the insanity rather than the homeliness of rural america and renders it in space-age technicolour. it's backwards folk-art by a sophisticate who understands his subject and it's so good that its inauthenticity isn't even a concern

maffew12 otm re:vultures. There was a good interview with beck in pfork a few years ago where vultures comes up and beck is kind of apologizing for it, almost sounds a little embarrassed, like "yeah we were trying to do something and experimenting, maybe it didnt work but it was a certain time & place, etc". And the interviewer says that vultures is a favorite of his (not even THE favorite, but just A favorite) and beck reacts with surprise and says that he's never heard anyone say that. And it's just like, really? You've never heard anyone say that this record is one of their faves? Is it possible that he really doesn't have an idea of how good that record is, and considers it a failed experiment? He seems to have such a strange perspective on his own work.

― Detective Picacho (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:31 (six years ago)
xp thanks calstars. Beck's album art & videos bring up so many distinct visual themes in my mind - the junk sculptures of Mellow Gold, the 70s ads & formica of Odelay, country & western swag, the more melancholy surrealism & pastel vibes of his 2000s stuff - it was fun to mash all those together and mix them up.

I mean, to think that, like, one year year later, Pharrell would be making some of the sickest actual rap and R&B music out with actual funky beats and a this same quasi-ironic falsetto and off-kilter outlook, idk

i think the more straight up electro pop moments aged extremely well cf. "get real paid"
indifferent to the idea of aging beyond that anyway
― american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:35 (six years ago)
i guess i get that the attitude behind some of the songs aged incredibly poorly but again, i feel like that is mainly isolated to "hollywood freaks"

From Wiki:
The song begins with a sample of a fight that Beck recorded of his two abusive neighbors. Beck recalls,When I was recording the song in my living room and they were out front screaming at each other and I couldn't...I had to stop recording my song. And it was strange because I was recording the music for the song; I hadn't written words yet. And I couldn't record anymore because they were too loud and I just left. I had to leave 'cause it was too hectic. When I came back I had all this...I had the song and then after they had this argument...it's too bad I lost the tape that has the original argument 'cause the argument went on for 40 minutes. It was unbelievable. I put 2 seconds of it on there. Pretty classic. But somebody out there has it.Beck also called it "a special tape, filled with horrible things that will destroy your destiny if you know what it is."He also said: "I was so shook up by the thing that I pulled over on the freeway and I just wrote the lyrics out and then the next day came back and sang the lyrics over the song. It was one of those experiences where life writes the songs. Which is good.

Paper Tiger is very nice to listen to but after I heard Melody Nelson it seemed a bit shameless.
― Eid y’self Fitr (JoeStork), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 23:58 (six years ago)
It's about the most overt homage I've ever heard in music--so what's shameless? Haven't read interviews form the era, but I feel like Beck would've practically used it as an excuse to talk up Serge/Vannier?
― Soundslike, Thursday, 6 June 2019 00:08 (six years ago)
Looking up interviews, there’s this:
But when we were making the record, I wanted to do something with strings that was very dramatic. And we were listening to that. And (he chuckles) we ended up with something that sounded exactly like it (Melody Nelson). I didn't intend that. But we did it and it came out so good, in my opinon, it sounded like a tribute. But it transcended that. And it was a good song. I remember, my producer is very particular about that kind of thing. I was like: 'I don't know, can we put this out?' And he said: 'It?' fine. It's a good piece of work.' But yeah, I love the way Gainsbourg uses the orchestras. It's not afraid to be dramatic and bold and emotional. There's something really cool about the sound too."
I’m not sure he’s right that it transcends being a tribute. The chorus sounds great on listening again though.

Catching up with today's tunes, magazines and free soda, trying hard not to think.
"Get Real Paid" way too low -- a top 20 Beck song that becomes a top 5 Beck song in its final 30 seconds (if that makes sense).

a lot of great tracks so far:-Brad really captured the appeal of "peaches & cream" in the voting thread - a prince song sung over a mellow gold groove - but it's even more than that with the glorious outro with all the overlapping vocals and the horns! way too low-"chemtrails" is a late period highlight - i love the drumming and bass playing and the guitar solo that fades back in at the end-"sunday sun" is really pretty and a great arrangement, i love the slow build and the way it sort of falls apart at the end-"i won't be long" just missed my ballot but i'm really glad to see it show up-"paper tiger" was in my top 10 - i don't really care if it's derivative but those immense strings over the rest of the track's relaxed groove works wonderfully

The thing I love about Beck that he seems like someone who had an extensive run of bootleg Celebrity Bowling videotapes taped off 3 AM showings on the Z Channel or something.

― Bee OK, Thursday, 6 June 2019 17:49 (six years ago)
yeah for all the damaged/junkyard/thrift store aesthetics of mellow gold, sweet sunshine is the only song on it that sounds like it is literally being sung & performed by some kind of living trash pile

"Lost Cause" is the only SC track to make my ballot.
― recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 June 2019 17:51 (six years ago)
Beck said that "Tropicalia"'s inspiration was "I've always loved a lot of different exotic music. I've been listening to Brazilian music since I was a kid, but I haven't really felt it was something that would come naturally until the last few years. I think for something like 'Tropicalia' I needed to go to places where that music existed in order to get to the point where I could do it myself. I wrote it in the back of the bus on tour, and then later I put lyrics to it. A lot of times I write the melody and the chords of the songs sometimes years before I ever get around it writing lyrics, so it just sits there incubating."Beck does not play any instrument in the song.
Beck does not play any instrument in the song.

The Flaming Lips cover of "The Golden Age" is really good too...makes it even more Harvest-y.
― a large tuna called “Justice” (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 6 June 2019 18:53 (six years ago)
This probably holds up the best of any of the Sea Change songs for me tbh, to my ears its the best version of that kinda song on the album. It was a memorable moment in the couple shows that I saw on the Flaming Lips tour, he would start the show doing it solo acoustic and then on the second verse the band all came in at once and a scrim would suddenly lift up revealing them, it was a neat effect
― One Eye Open, Thursday, 6 June 2019 18:57 (six years ago)

I don't get the sea change hate and references to teenage response like it carried no weight. It came out in my mid 30s when a close friend was going through a divorce and just tore us all to pieces. Golden Age is a stunning opener. Sounded amazing on tour tour too. Did it just get lumped in with morning phase or something in retrospect?

My Beck chronology was 1) Loser on mtv/radio seemed like a novelty/joke for kids younger than me but the Allman Bros sample is dope.2) a friend played me the rest of mellow gold & it blew my mind!3) checked out ssm & ofitg and thought he was the gonna be the new Dylan watershed.4) odelay was everywhere all the time until I got sick of it - I actually interviewed for a staff writing job at amg when their office was a house in central Michigan and they were playing it during the interview and asked me what I thought the album of the year should be and I said car button cloth by the Lemonheads to be contrary and didn't get the job.5) mutations blew my mind again, he's genius!6) I got married, got a real job7) Debra - unbelievable! - he's changing again and nailing a funny falsetto torch song! The rest of MV was fun, but again it felt like novelty for someone younger than me.8) I moved on, had kids9) sea change - see my post above, it tore us up, like he was one of us at the time.10) the information - had stickers for the kids to play with on the cover, but I guess the his genius has run dry.11) guerro, why bother? Modern guilt - didn't even buy.12) morning phase - yawn. I'm old and boring and so is he.13) colors - my teenaged kids don't walk out of the room when I play it, I guess it's cool for dad rock.

My number one vote, glad it placed. Some of my ballot-ordering was strategic, but not this, my #1 fave Beck song. It's one of those songs that feels like he's covering a timeless old country classic, it's weird to think that he just wrote it.
Also the craziest story - supposedly he just wrote it superfast on his way to the studio, to give the pedal steel player something to play at the session.

i still don't quite get all the Sea Change complaining, i largely agree that the album's too much of a dirge as a whole and his lyrics were much more interesting when they weren't so sincere, but most of the tracks on their own are good to great - well arranged, pretty melodies etc. it doesn't even seem like anything from it is going to make the top 20!
but then again i still don't quite get Mellow Gold either, i can respect the idea of "Sweet Sunshine" but it's not something i'm ever going to want to listen to unfortunately

You're not wrong ufo - most of the songs are pretty good on their own, and nothing on it is really embarrassing or terrible. I think if he had released a highly regarded album of loud weird funky party jams the year after it people would probably have a bit higher esteem for Sea Change now, and look at it as a tasteful addition to his discography rather than an inflection point where he Got Serious.
This poll has inspired me to give a close listen to a lot of sea change tracks for the first time in a long long time, and made me realize that for me, a lot of the issue isn't necessarily the material, but the production, which sounds extremely dated to the early 2000s in ways that dont hold up for me. Listening to Lost Cause when it came up in the poll, I was simultaneously thinking that the song was better than I remembered, and also couldnt believe how distracting all the constant whooshing noises and bleeps and blorps and snippets of distorted vocals and backwards moans were, filling up every inch of the mix and every moment when Beck's not singing. For my ears, they just went way overboard with that stuff in a way that really pegs it to that time period of people going bananas with ProTools. Thats why the live versions of a lot of those songs sound a lot better to me. And I get that they were going for that, but I just think the shelf life of that sound has ended up being pretty short for me.

The music video for "Girl" was directed by Motion Theory. In the video, Beck gets a limousine advertisement entitled "Lester's Big Ass Limousines...Moving Party For Hire" which folds to become "Less Is More". Later on, Beck is in a pharmacy, buying an over-the-counter drug. When he is looking at it, the walls and floor fold, making a skull with red eyes on the shelves and a sign above that saying "Side Effects: Death". The next fold is at what seems to be a garage sale. There is a painting of the Virgin Mary on the wall, which then folds. In the foreground, two toy cars have been folded together. Beck is seen later on in the video driving the car that looks like the car that this fold makes. The next fold takes place on a sidewalk, where a little girl is doing a chalk drawing. She sets down the chalk and walks away, the side walk folds and it takes the form of human outline, with police and the yellow tape around it. The fold after this one is a homeless person begging on the corner when Beck is driving by. The man holds a sign in his hand which says "Loose Change OK Allan's Anyway". The man proceeds to fold the sign, which now reads "Look Away". Later in the video, a sign is folded together to form the words "Where It's At" with 2 records and a microphone, which is in reference to the Beck song of the same name. The 1972 El Camino Beck is driving in the video has the license plate "3CK 61RL".MAD references in the videoWhen Beck is looking at the TV, when the screen's image folds in it says "Al Jaffee", and at the very end where he sits on the bench, the fold-in reveals an Alfred E. Neuman smile. The very use of fold-in scenes is itself a tribute to MAD, which features a fold-in on the back inside cover of every issue.

― Detective Picacho (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 7 June 2019 17:31 (six years ago)
A word about the chorus is necessary. Initially, we had a report of a song called "Summer Girl." Then when the unmastered version of Guero leaked, we matched it to this song, naturally. Only thing was, Beck doesn't really sound like he's singing "summer girl." So, confusion. Then when Guero was officially announced, the title was changed "Girl." Clearly, that's an inferior title to "Summer Girl," so fans were baffled. Or at least I was. Anyway, we still weren't sure what the chorus was! Beck.com confirms that the early name of the song was indeed "Summer Girl," but it's fairly clear now that is not the chorus. Beck led us on, as in the liner notes of the album, the chorus is printed as "My...girl." Like that, ellipses and everything. Thanks Beck.So now we're stuck with lots of theories until someone can straight-up ask Beck, and gets a real answer in return. I'm kind of feeling that it's "cyanide girl" from listening to a bootleg or two; it fits the lyrics, imo. Since this is my site, that's what I'm putting in the lyrics above. Others hear "sun-eyed," or "sinner," or even "cyan eyed." Also one theory is that it's "Masonna girl." Some probably still hear "summer."UPDATE: Beck was finally asked by a journalist about the lyrics. He's not talking. Neither is his keyboardist, Brian LeBarton, by the way. This is what was written:Equally unclear is the chorus to Beck's current single, "Girl," a lovely summertime jam which appears to be about killing a girl. In the Guero liner notes, the lyric is written as "Hey, my ... Girl," and Beck isn't about to fill in that ellipsis. In fact, in traditional Beck style, he's claiming that the whole thing is the result of a stream-of-consciousness, off-the-cuff ad lib. Which he decided to leave in, since it fit with the song's overall vibe."In the studio I was just vocalizing, 'cause I have the melody but hadn't written the lyrics. Sometimes when I have the microphone I just make up words and I try to go with what sounds good. So that was just me improvising, and we ended up leaving it like that. So what you hear is basically the first time I recorded it," Beck said. "It's kind of a love song, mixed in with some grit and some mystery. Using different words and images to describe the feeling. It's a raggedy love song."

I'm surprised the story has been lost that this is a reworking of "In the pines" by Leadbelly, from the point of view of the headless body.He mentions losing his head under the train wheels, he mentions the pines, and the song finishes with him playing the chords to the original song.

From Whiskeyclone:
Beck has mentioned that this song was a part of his "Brazilian trilogy" (along with "Tropicalia" and I guess later on "Missing"). Unlike "Tropicalia," which is a bossa nova song, "Deadweight" uses its Brazilian influence more as part of a larger funky brew. Beck is almost a one-man band here, playing bass, keyboards, drum machine, and all the guitars; though the scratching is uncredited, it was most likely one of the Dust Brothers. Nonetheless, it's a stunning recording, and rates high among Beck's best songs. As Beck said in USA Today (July 11 1996), "I'm trying to get to a place where this merging of styles is so fluent and natural that you don't notice the different snippets, a musical consciousness where there's no preconceived ideas." With "Deadweight," I think he got there.

Initially, "Cold Brains" was meant for the sequel album to One Foot in the Grave, but when that never happened, Beck rescued it for Mutations. It's always been a relatively simple and pretty folk song, but for the album, it was decorated into one of the finest recordings he's made. Beck himself played all the guitars, harmonica, a little piano, and even some glockenspiel. Uncharacteristically, the lyrics remained pretty much unchanged from the first known version in June 1996, through until the recorded version in March 1998. The prevailing image in "Cold Brains" is death. A more specific interpretation would be the death of inspiration, writer's block. To a prolific songwriter like Beck, what could be worse? The first verse begins with an evocative, rhythmic description of his current state of mind: "unmoved, untouched, unglued." He is struggling with creating, his brains are cold, he has "no thoughts, no mind." The next verse goes further in describing his unsuccessful attempts at finding inspiration. Here, he describes inspiration as a "field of green," he longs for it. Unfortunately, he is on the gravel. Even with a "worm of hope," he still fails ("a hangman's rope pulls me one way or the other"). The last verse is the most depressing. All the unsuccessful attempts have ended up quieting the "bird of song," and is most likely a self-reference to the singer himself. Most shocking is the conclusion that "it doesn't matter": to the writer? to fans who will just move on? This is quite the existential question for a creative writer. When Beck was asked about the bleakness of "Cold Brains" (and most of Mutations), he said he actually found the lyrics to be funny. I don't know. I think of it as mostly playful, but then I think Leonard Cohen is a humorous song writer. In "Cold Brains" when I say, "The fields of green are obscene and I lay upon the gravel," (sic) there's just this demented auto-erotica that I think is hilarious. It's not meant to necessary bring anybody down or bum anybody out.And in that sense, he's right. While "Cold Brains" is not a light-hearted song (the images throughout are quite bleak), it is not a bummer or overly depressing about the situation. (Maybe a little.) Beck explains it this way, "I think there's a certain world-weariness to the record, but I just think of it as being part of the condition of our whole way of living. I don't know anybody who doesn't reach a point of exhaustion on a regular basis. We don't know how to live anymore." On "Cold Brains," he explores what it's like to reach that point.

Haha yeah I actually like Steve Threw Up a lot too. It's true he did record joke songs, novelty songs, tossed off goofs and etc, but he also clearly knew the difference - its not an accident that Steve Threw Up isn't on Mellow Gold

Beck explained this amazing recording's inspiration when he was on KCRW in 1998: ["Diamond Bollocks"] happened because we'd been in [the studio] about 10 days, I think, doing all these waltzes and dirges and all these 3/4 songs. And I came into the lounge and everybody was watching these acid rock videos, Justin and Roger and everybody were. I think we all just needed to rock out for a minute because we'd been, like I said, in the slow lane for awhile. And the studio is fairly sedentary and we needed to get our cockles warm, just kinda kick it into gear a little bit.Later Beck described the process with a little more detail. "We literally, in one night, recorded eight songs, then took the 24-track tapes and cut them all up on a tape and created this crazy song. It was more about the process than the actual song, but I ended up liking the song too," he explained. And what a fantastic recording it is! The band wanted a change of pace, and they sure got it. Opening with a little carnival beat, which in a way predicts the whirlwind pace and structure about to follow, the song blasts off. The gallimaufrey goes something like this: carnival-esque harpsichord intro (with panting) to choral bridge [:00-:27]the big rock guitar riff, borrowed from "Megaboob," and first verse (with lyrics from "Erase the Sun") [:27-1:22]band jam, with Joey Waronker's phenomenal drumming [1:22-1:52]birds tweeting [1:52-1:57]Justin's bass solo mixed with Roger's harpsichord [1:57-2:23]Beck's middle "Lonesome Whistle" section [2:23-2:53]a noisy bridge [2:53-3:07]the "Megaboob" rock section, and end verse [3:07-4:12]a calm harpsichord chorus ("Looking back at some dead world...") [4:12-4:54]one last rock blast, with more mad drumming from Joey [4:54-5:36]a synthesizer coda [5:36-6:01]So if this was literally 8 songs combined (that seems slightly high hyperbole to me), I guess they could include "Dead World," "Megaboob," "Erase The Sun," and "scented eunuchs" sections. Lyrically, the song is a dazzling mix of creative phrases, probably just spun together randomly. In 1995, Beck recorded a b-side called "Erase the Sun" which included a number of these lines and phrases, such as "choice cut meets from derelict boulevards," "dazzlements of accidents," "hari-karis," "spinning round the golden looms," and "offices and fountains they named for you." The initial idea was to put the song as track two on Mutations, but Beck changed his mind and moved it (on American versions of the album) to be a hidden track at the end of the album. He explains, "It's part of the record, but it's like the wayward son at the Thanksgiving dinner who just doesn't really fit in with the family anymore, is the black sheep. So you put him at the end of the table..." Over the years, Beck has on occasion returned to "Diamond Bollocks" on stage a few times. It's never been played a lot, but a few times in 2006, once more in 2012. Beck drops a lot of his old songs completely, but "Diamond Bollocks" seems to be a song and recording of which he is proud, an ambitious, over-the-top, and fun track.

Beck said of the song's lyrics:Its me playing with the ridiculousness of those entrenched ideas about what a man does and what a woman can do. A lot of soul music comes from a real masculine strength, but there's also this intense vulnerability about it. You have the masculine tough-guy exterior and the emotional openness, which is feminine, as well. I wanted to have fun with that, turn up that contrast a little bit without getting bogged down into preciousness and psychobabble.Of the song's music, he said:I think my main interest in using the horns was for uperformance - so much music today is so guitar heavy. I sought other places to get muscle into the music. Many bands rely heavily on guitar to pump up the sound, but I thought it would be interesting to make the horns into the guitars. I think it was the L.A. Rams. I used to watch them when I was growing up, and it just reminded me of Monday Night Football in 1978.

Devils Haircut" shows off the Dust Brothers' production techniques at their finest. The song is a mixture of samples, but to their great credit, the song still sounds very much like a band performance. A quick breakdown of the samples turns up three main ones (there's probably some minor ones!). First is the four-note guitar riff which leads the song. Like some of "Jack-ass," this comes from Van Morrison's great '60s group, Them. They did a lot of covers, and one was a groovy song called "I Can Only Give You Everything." Beck and the Dusties did not literally sample this song, however, but just replayed the riff, giving it more muscle and a fuller sound. Yet another Them cover, this one of James Brown's funky classic "Out of Sight," was also used. From this, they get the drumbeat heard during the verses of "Devils Haircut." During the choruses (and "good drum breaks") though, the drums are courtesy of another song, Pretty Purdie's "Soul Drums." Purdie is a jazz drummer, who calls himself the "most sampled drummer ever." On top of all this, Beck sings some unique and bizarre lyrics. A bevy of grotesque, Beat-poetic images like "discount orgies," "bleeding noses," "garbage man trees," and "stealing kisses from the leperous faces" are relatively off-putting. Beck uses them to evoke a feeling, a sense of disorientation, "a devils haircut in my mind," the blues. And it is in true blues fashion that the song is open to so many interpretations. How do you define "the blues"? Its definition seems to vary for listeners and artists. Beck noticed this "vague" quality himself. When asked, he's offered up numerous possible interpretations (from the silly, to the obscure, to the possible). Beck even made fun of it during his appearance on the TV show "Futurama": "What was that song about?" "Devils Haircut" does contain a number of references to travel or touring, and it has been reported that the song was written just after Beck finished the difficult Lollapalooza tour, which had given him a few months break during the recording Odelay. One intriguing comment from Beck was that the song was a rewriting of the famous "Stagolee" blues myth: I don't know if I ever HAD any youthful purity, but I can understand that you might be tempted to make commercial shit and compromise to do it. I try not to compromise on anything. I think we associate becoming an adult with compromise. Maybe that's what the devil is. In 'Devils Haircut' that was the scenario. I imagined Stagger Lee . . . I thought, what if this guy showed up now in 1996. The song had this Sixties grooviness, and I thought of using him as a Rumplestiltskin figure, this Lazarus figure to comment on where we've ended up as people. What would he make of materialism and greed and ideals of beauty and perfection? His reaction would be, 'Whoa, this is disturbing shit.'He explained the song further as being "a really simplistic metaphor for the evil of vanity." But of course, in the same interview, he said the song wasn't planned out at all: "I thought 'Devils Haircut' was a really bad lyric. If I can't finish a song, I'll just put in something temporary. That's what 'Loser' was. Then the temporary one always becomes the best one, because it wasn't all thought out."

― Bee OK, Friday, 7 June 2019 21:44 (six years ago)
"The New Pollution" is one of Beck's hit singles from his 1996 album, Odelay. Beck was once asked what the new pollution was. His reply, "Human radios, sex with machines, mad eunuchs." Cryptic, but it makes a little sense. He is observing that in modern times, technology and information can drive you mad. It's everywhere, bombarding your senses. The woman he is singing about in the song, then, is admirably unaffected by the new pollution, and somehow remains pure. Beck himself called it a "love song," and surely there's some admiration, if not actual love throughout the lyrics. It is a great way to frame his point about modern information. In Rolling Stone in 2008, it was written that Beck was "trying to evoke the Sixties glamour of femme fatales from Nico to Brigitte Bardot" in the line about having a cigarette on each arm. The ability to "throw her troubles to the dyin' embers" is admirable. The image of her being a boat alone in a "stripmine ocean" is wonderful. There's something very comforting in that, if at the same time, slightly dangerous. This is a slanted, but effective, portrait of a femme fatale. "The New Pollution" is an amazing song, and Beck seems quite proud of it: "...a song like 'The New Pollution,' I mean, pollution, it's a presence in our lives. And isn't it interesting to use a word like that-something with such horrible connotations-in the context of a love song? That's where you create friction. That's where you can start to get someplace where you aren't dealing in the banalities of everyday, pedestrian rock lyrics. Not that I mean to be snobby about it, I can appreciate the good ol' song, and I still like to write that way sometimes." It's interesting to note that Beck uses this type of contrast often, including songs like "Asshole" or "Sweet Sunshine." Integral to the song's core is the sublime sax sample. It makes the song what it is. More generally, Beck calls the song "inverted funk." He explains, "Some of the other songs are a little bit too loose. We had to pull in the reins, make it a little more tight, bring in the Mormon feel. Mormons are funky."

Not that I mean to be snobby about it, I can appreciate the good ol' song, and I still like to write that way sometimes." It's interesting to note that Beck uses this type of contrast often, including songs like "Asshole" or "Sweet Sunshine."
Integral to the song's core is the sublime sax sample. It makes the song what it is. More generally, Beck calls the song "inverted funk." He explains, "Some of the other songs are a little bit too loose. We had to pull in the reins, make it a little more tight, bring in the Mormon feel. Mormons are funky."

"Diamond Bollocks" as track 2 might have stuck Mutations with comparisons to OK Computer simply based on its sequencing. I wrongly assumed it was a leftover from Odelay.

Well I know "Fume" and "Forcefield" and "Totally Confused" and about 9 other picks of mine are not making it LOL.
I think it's time for a complete BECK go around for me. Just like I found out with Prince, I think I'm missing out on some jems.

good placement imo, not too low & not too high
saw him do this live in '96 and lived on my memories until Midnite Vultures came out, one of the longest times I've ever waited to hear a studio version of a tune I first heard live (see also Pink Martini, who waited for years and years before releasing 'Hey Eugene").
also I fucking love it so so much, the whole "I think" thing totally makes the song (i.e. "I think your nametag said Jenny")
plus "lady, step inside my Hyundai" xp!

very much enjoying the song notes today, Bee
which features a fold-in on the back inside cover of every issue.
pfft at this bullshit though. since 1964 there have been SEVEN issues which did not feature a fold-in!
(one got pulled for school-shooting-related reasons in 2013, but finally run this year: this was the first time since 1997 that the now-98-year-old Al Jaffee had not written and painted a new fold-in.)

Beck had originally attempted to record "Debra" with the Dust Brothers for Odelay, but was either not happy with the recording, or felt it didn't fit on the album, or both. ("I thought it was too jokey," Beck once admitted.) But the song was a natural for the stage: "What happened is we started playing it live and it became the centerpiece of the whole set. It was the song that people would react to more than the songs that they'd heard on the radio. So we kept playing it and playing it." It took on a life of its own, and the energy that was breathed into the song was clearly noted. "I think its life began as being tongue-in-cheek and silly, but somewhere along the way, like the way we performed it every night, it acquired some other dimensions," Beck explained. When Beck put together the Deluxe version of Odelay in 2006, he mentioned including the original recording of "Debra" as a bonus treat. However, it did not end up there: whether he could not find it or what happened to it, I do not know. Hopefully, he still has it and it can be released sometime. Anyway, after playing the song live for a few years, Beck went and recorded the song again for Midnite Vultures. In fact, I would not be surprised if the live success of "Debra" drove the direction of Vultures: both the song and album are melanges of soul, funk, humor. Still, in many ways, the album version does not compare to the excitement of live versions, which could and would go off on tangents on Beck and the band's whims. Nonetheless, "Debra" still shows off many dimensions, including Beck's "seventeen-octave vocal range," his humor, his natural ability with melody, his ease at absorbing influence. The song, as often thought, isn't a mockery either, but a tongue-in-cheek ode to the R&B phenomenon. Maybe it was borne as a bit of a joke, but it ended up more a tribute. As Beck explained, "It's fascinating to me, these guys singing R&B with a very sweet, smooth groove, but they're singing about how they want to get some girl's panties off and do them real good. Very explicit, but very sensitive at the same time. It's a really weird juxtaposition." Musical juxtaposition is basically Beck's main goal (especially on Midnite Vultures), so the song fits perfectly. "Debra" has grown a lot over the years. One constant (besides the lyrics) is the skanky bass riff, which was lifted from a Ramsey Lewis track called "My Love For You" on his album Funky Serenity. On record, Justin Meldal-Johnsen plays the lick on his upright. I have a feeling that David Bowie's own Vultures-soul record, Young Americans, was a big influence on the sound here, especially the song "Win." Beck has mentioned numerous times R. Kelly's song, "I Like The Crotch On You" being an inspiration, and lo and behold, one of the first lines of that song is "I wanna get with you." Not there originally, the "Lovely lady / Girl you drive me crazy" coda developed on stage, and was lifted in from Kool Keith's "Lovely Lady." Beck of course uses all of these as launching points for his own tale of seduction, and over time, it surely has become one of the classics of Beck's career.

Yeah I'm happy to see Debra place where it did. I feel like it nails the sweet spot of what Midnite Vultures was going for, it's funny without being a parody, but also just a really joyful celebration of what's fun about a certain kind of song. I get why some people think why Midnite Vultures might veer too close to mockery or w/e, but imo its impossible to listen to Debra and not think that it was made by musicians who really love that sound

Said to be one of the oldest songs on Mellow Gold, Beck has claimed that he wrote it as a struggling musician, at the age of 18 or 19. Beck claimed that the song originally had ten verses, which were cut down for commercial release. On a limited number of Mellow Gold 12" vinyl albums, one can hear a version with an added stanza, which is inserted between the first and second verses of the standard Mellow Gold version.[1] It should also be noted "Got No Mind," a re-recorded, electric full-band arrangement of "Pay No Mind,", features three of the seven verses of "Pay No Mind" that were cut on Mellow Gold and is included on the single for "Beercan."

"Novacane" is a blast of energy in the middle of Odelay; ironic because novacane is a numbing drug, the opposite effect of a blast of energy. Beck uses a punk rock riff to explore the thrill of touring, while his lyrics convey the opposite sidethat constant touring can also be numbing. And to top it off, Beck explained, "We needed to subvert the aggro posturing, so we put in disco horns." The initial title of the song was "Novacane Express," which clarifies the subject of the song even more, if the constant highway/truck/travel images weren't clue enough. The attitude is of the song is clear. "On that tune I was down with Ice Station Zebra and Convoy," explains Beck, "kicking ass Antarctica-style." (Ice Station Zebra being a war film, and Convoy a movie about truckers.) Before playing the song in 1995, Beck said "This is called 'Novacane Express,' it's about the last convoy!" More recently, in 2008, Beck reminisced again about this Convoy film: "Spike (Jonze) and I talked about doing a video together for ten years before we actually ever did one. One of our first conversations was about the movie Convoy he was obsessed with it. He wanted to do a video where I was in a convoy, so I wrote all this truckers-going-into-oblivion imagery." An interesting note on the recording is that his vocals were apparently done via walkie-talkie, for that full on CB radio effect.

I always thought of "Novacane" as a reaction/response/answer song to the Beastie's "Sabotage", same crushing hard-rock-with-a-backbeat vibe

Too bad "In a Cold Ass Fashion" is so obscure; it's a great patchwork of nonsense in the "Loser/Beercan" vein. Got a couple of my favorite non-sequitur lyrics: "And I'm trying not to look at Satan making love to a dishrag" and "Went to sleep, woke up in a coffin / Took out my eyeballs and put 'em in a condom."

btw alfred: "tropicalia" ends side one of mutations, at least on all official released versions of the lp. i was surprised too! ("diamond bollocks" and "runners dial zero" get their own 7-inch, which i thought was a nice touch)
― american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:53 (six years ago)
I didn't expect my #2 "Outcome" to place but I did expect "He's a Mighty Good Leader" to show up somewhere.
"Hollow Log" seems like a good winner for One Foot In The Grave tho, even though I assumed "Asshole" was the consensus favorite.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:28 (six years ago)
extended 'gimme' sure is one long, strange trip
― imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:30 (six years ago)
Regarding Sea Change, most of the album doesn't place among my favorites except for "End Of The Day" (which for some reason I thought was titled "Nothing That I Haven't Seen Before") -- again, I assumed this was the obvious consensus standout.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:33 (six years ago)
As much as I'd like to get upset over his signature song winning this, it always sounds fresh every time I hear it. Not nearly as annoying as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" winning the Nirvana poll.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:39 (six years ago)
I thought the same thing re:Mighty Good Leader, seems like one of the essential tracks from one One Foot. But also very happy that Hollow Log wound up where it did

I don't know Beck that well so I didn't vote, but really enjoyed the rollout, images, and discussion. I have to express my puzzlement, though, that no one voted for my favorite Beck thing, the video for "Deadweight." Those first three Director Series DVDs, and Gondry's especially, seemed to come from an alternate universe where the '90s were an era of nonpareil pop culture creativity.

not sure if i want to do a review of the show, i will say this: his newer songs were the best songs in this environment for some odd reason. Cage the Elephant is not a good pairing for Beck as pretty much everyone came for them and not Beck.
