This record is... something. But it’s very good.

Honestly it reminds me of Max Tundra as much as it does PC Music

i didn't really like this album but i do like the dylan brady remix of charli xcx's "blame it on your love", perhaps more than the original (but not as much as "track 10") - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_j-1ZJ5xpY

i'm way too fucking old for this but i sent a link to the guy i still talk to in indiana because i for some reason don't know anybody here i can talk to about music? and he was all over it

he also liked the daphne and celeste album, which i loved but that's much more "old person" weird

Idk why pc music people would hate this it seems like pc music with a better marketed image

I get that there’s a novelty to this I think is interesting

But it’s also borderline un-replayable ... a guy I know told me a (possibly apocryphal) story about his (probably annoying) friend who when in a museum would walk up to a painting and go “I get it” immediately. That’s how I feel when I listen to this ... “I get it.” There’s a kind of disruptive shock to how they’ve rearranged their previous influences/inspirations/junk culture in some new, coherent formation. But it’s also like ... that’s all there is, it’s all surface, so once you’ve talked about that, what is there? Something very temporal about its appeal to me, that especially once they get sucked up into the attention machine, I’m curious how well they’ll be able to sustain it

Pretty weird to see 100 Gecs get embraced by hipsters after like 30 years of message board posters calling John Zorn and Mr. Bungle insufferable neckbeard music

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 December 2019 23:06 (six years ago)

I think ringtone is genuinely a well written song. Catchy, and it switches up in the second half before it returns to the start. But yeah, a lot of the album is noise with jokes on top. Which is great as well.

my only disappointment with coming out as trans was finding out that trans people in real life listen to the same sort of music everyone else listens to; we're not really some sort of tastemaker cultural elite. eventually other people will cotton on to the fact that we're not actually "cool" but until them i guess we can snow them by talking about 100 gecs

Y u hate fun

silby, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 13:33 (five years ago)

as is often the case the best angle we have here is from d-40 about pure surface. there are other things that you might call totally superficial that don't have the same resonance or particular affect, just as there are many types of shitposting. gecs have a distinct attitude behind them that is v different to melodramatic kitsch old stuff like mr bungle or whatever. it's not parody, it's not quite pastiche. there is a welcoming cuteness and personability that help make gecs infectious, but also a blankness. they're not aiming for any sort of transcendence, they're not referring to anything other than referencing itself, it's pure empty gesture, like when maggie nelson says "the most I want to do is show you the end of my index finger. its muteness". there's an acceptance and glory in the total lack of transcendence, a ritualistic embrace of uselessness

could say they are doomer fun. not nihilistic necessarily (altho never listen to anyone who uses nihilist pejoratively), or stupid necessarily, so much as irrationalist. high nonsense. which makes them traditional rock and roll as outlined by meltzer.

post-ween imo. something extremely, aggressively non-specific about the emptiness. beyond pastiche, not so much playing with particular signifiers as totally burnt out on cycling through them. standing atop the mashed-up goo, everything smells like shit. lowest-common-denominator meaninglessness to the point of total fluidity.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 16:50 (five years ago)

for the record my earlier post wasn't meant as some kind of sharp meta-dismissal of 100 gecs themselves, more a dismissal of the idea that there would be any value or purpose in any of us dismissing them.

100 gecs don't exactly invite critical discourse. what the hell am i supposed to say? i don't get it? who cares if i get it? they're not doing it for my benefit. i'm trans, sure, but i'm also a bougie middle-aged white lady. if they want my opinion, they'll ask.

but i have no idea why they would _want_ my opinion, quite honestly. it's not like uninformed critical opinions from clueless people are in short supply right now. the one thing i do get from being trans is that i am frequently the recipient of exactly those sort of judgements on my lived experience from people whose opinions are simply irrelevant. 100 gecs' music is their expression of their lived experience, and the least i can do is respect that. i support whatever it is they are doing, and i hope it brings them joy and that it brings the people who have some faint inkling of what the hell they are up to joy.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 19 November 2021 20:33 (four years ago)

great video imo

this all feels dismissive & like you all wanted it to be bad so you could dismiss it

i would have much preferred it to be good or at the very least interesting. i didn't love the debut but there was definitely the possibility of the group that made that making something really really good & this is clearly the complete opposite

ufo, Friday, 19 November 2021 22:43 (four years ago)

maybe. i am gonna wait for the album before deciding whether they've taken a bad path. the same wait i am also granting charli and mitski obv lol

imago, Friday, 19 November 2021 22:47 (four years ago)

watching video while listening to song is trippy

flopson, Friday, 19 November 2021 23:47 (four years ago)

ufo otm that the hook is weak. but idk, i still kinda like the song

flopson, Friday, 19 November 2021 23:50 (four years ago)

agree that video is great

the thought of 100 gecs releasing a sophomore slump is a terrible thought. that first record is so goddamn good, and after two years of a pandemic we need the best gecs we can get

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 20 November 2021 04:43 (four years ago)

i'd also like to add that "sympathy 4 the grinch" is a banger

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 20 November 2021 04:45 (four years ago)

hm maybe i have something to contribute to ye old overhyped releases thread

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Saturday, 20 November 2021 04:52 (four years ago)

even imago isn't really willing to bat for this single so i don't think it's overhyped yet

it's just dire, surely they can do better than this bottom of the barrel pop punk

ufo, Saturday, 20 November 2021 05:08 (four years ago)

there’s something about the production i like but can’t describe. gummy? sounds like a flat tire driving down a bumpy road

the skrillex collab is decent but the other two new tracks are kinda boring reheated sleigh bells

ufo, Friday, 2 December 2022 09:08 (three years ago)

that's about right. hard to get too excited when the transgression has become the mean.

i mostly like the 30 seconds in the middle of the hand crushed by a mallet remix that sounds like nguzunguzu sped up

really just feels like they're making up for not really caring about the debut because this is really really bad lol

everyone go listen to the pas tasta ep instead of this

ufo, Thursday, 16 March 2023 14:04 (two years ago)

"mememe" is one of the better tracks here somehow

ufo, Thursday, 16 March 2023 14:05 (two years ago)

i was not much of a fan of the debut (basically came down to not liking pop-punk vocals and the production being too flimsy - i want my hyperpop to sound huge!) but they could at least write a hook

ufo, Thursday, 16 March 2023 23:27 (two years ago)

Ok yeah I can’t deny on first listen this is a massive drop in quality from the debut. It’s good but the pop-punk/Sleigh Bells style they’re going for here doesn’t work as well as I would’ve hoped. It all just feels like general zany randomness in a way the debut didn’t? And it’s so much less fun

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 17 March 2023 10:49 (two years ago)

I Got My Tooth Removed bangs tho

Thought the last album and the December EP were mostly awful - but Doritos & Fritos was a worthwhile attempt to update White Music. So I have no idea what to expect from an album which is apparently more like the latter but which most people aren't keen on.

idk, I think the new album is pretty good, but then again, I loved the first one and thought the Snake Eyes EP was a decent stopgap so ymmv. I did find it a bit disappointing on first listen, but I've warmed up to it more with a couple more go thrus.

It definitely helps to have a strong tolerance for late 90s/early aughts pop-punk though and I agree with the pfork review that Ween is a pretty good reference point for the wackiness and erratic tonal shifts.

Kinda wish that the looming specters of Disney lawyers didn't prevent this one from getting included though . . .

I generally really liked the album! Wasn't too interested in the more digicore/screamy aspects that return from the earlier releases but I was taken by the stuff that's more in the vein of D&F (latter of which sounds better than ever) or at least more tuneful. The frog song for instance, with its croaks a nice Stump homage. Or the Sleng Teng underlay of The Most Wanted Person. Or the two songs that try awfully hard not to turn into Sweet Dreams or Hunting for Witches (this is a struggle I faced several times when I used to make music).

he's been chilling in the basement for a minute

757 and frog on the floor are so good, mememe also pretty great, rare moments that match the charm of the debut. i feel like 21 pilots and KLF are under-discussed touchpoints for this project ...
