Guardian weirdly did a list that also included the already well documented, debated and canonised music of the 00s. Gorilla vs Bear just dropped a very Gorilla vs Bear list. Feel like we'll start seeing more of these around November.

Why am I even more bored by the gvb list than I am by the guardian one?

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 21 September 2019 11:39 (five years ago)

ranking that most recent Earl Sweatshirt above his previous albums is crazy talk imo

alpine static, Saturday, 21 September 2019 15:31 (five years ago)

also how was Kill For Love this decade, that album feels ancient to me

alpine static, Saturday, 21 September 2019 15:32 (five years ago)

The GVB list is very predictable if you follow him but I actually love it, his taste aligns a lot with mine. I don’t think that many EOD lists will feature Amen Dunes, Dean Blunt + Inga Copeland, Tirzah, Chromatics, Shabazz Palaces or Clams Casino. These are all artists and albums I adore and love to see them represented in at least one of these lists.

I also like that there’s no love thrown to Tame Impala since every indie zine seems to overrate that one, makes me roll my eyes whenever I see any of his albums in a top 10.

Surprised he completely ignored Radiohead, Freddie Gibbs and Ariel Pink. He rated their albums highly each year. I get Ariel Pink has fallen from grace in the past couple of years, so that might be a factor.

I know this thread is for more official EOD not personal ones but I'll promise I only post it this one time:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/moteldemoka/top-50-albums-of-the-10s/

it's in heavy need of an update and I'll probably change it in a couple of months but I had to prove how much gvb taste overlaps with mine :P

Here's my also incomplete 'top 250 songs of the 2010s', I hope I can get to actually having a definite one by the end of the year, hopefully all the upcoming EOD lists will help me with my progressive loss of memory:

the gvb list is a bit boring to me, usually his lists have some interesting hidden gems i hadn't heard of but i'm already familiar with nearly everything on it for once, but i guess that isn't a surprise since i've been following his taste for most of the decade

ufo, Saturday, 21 September 2019 22:37 (five years ago)

Every list that doesn’t have Kendrick Lamar or Kanye West or Tame Impala or Frank Ocean in the top 20 isn’t that boring. Just you wait. You’ll wish we had more lists like gvb by the end on this cycle.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 22 September 2019 00:49 (five years ago)

yeah it's not boring in the way that a lot of these lists will be i'm sure, just relatively boring/predictable for a gvb list

ufo, Sunday, 22 September 2019 01:02 (five years ago)

don't follow GvB closely but I like a lot of this list

Dan S, Sunday, 22 September 2019 01:17 (five years ago)

I know this thread is for more official EOD not personal ones but I'll promise I only post it this one time:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/moteldemoka/top-50-albums-of-the-10s/

that's a nice list, some albums on there i like a fair amount, some i haven't heard of... i'd listen to them if i wasn't being lazy about discovering new music lately

i think it's a better list than gvb's

sock fingering, baby (rushomancy), Sunday, 22 September 2019 02:05 (five years ago)

just clicked on it, I like that list too

Dan S, Sunday, 22 September 2019 02:07 (five years ago)

i felt like blatantly nerding out so i threw together a quick list of 2010s records that struck me. they're not ranked and i don't know how many there are because i'm not feeling that completely anal, but these records have stuck with me over the course of the last ten years.

brimstead, Sunday, 22 September 2019 03:11 (five years ago)

Actually enjoying seeing people's individual lists. They'll be more interesting than the ones that major publications put out.

triggercut, Sunday, 22 September 2019 03:17 (five years ago)

theesatisfaction - earthee

I give Awe Naturale a slight edge, but I'm just happy to see they haven't been forgotten in the noisy landscape of the 2010s.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 September 2019 07:13 (five years ago)

major publications will inevitably have to reflect some kind of "consensus", compromise, smoothing off rough edges. but the 2010s was a decade without consensus. we don't need another canon right now. better to take this opportunity to reflect and listen to some of the people who may have gotten overlooked the first time around, imo.

sock fingering, baby (rushomancy), Sunday, 22 September 2019 13:00 (five years ago)

there's a lot of folks who are on this that would be on my list as well, but different records.

still, the ooz is on here; nice.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Sunday, 22 September 2019 15:09 (five years ago)

I Voted(✓): https://pitchfork.com/news/vote-for-the-best-of-the-2010s-in-the-pitchfork-readers-poll/

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 16:40 (five years ago)

(spent about 5 mins. on it; didn't knock myself out)

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 16:42 (five years ago)

What shall we bomb that poll with. Coombes? Gotta be something more Pitchforky

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 16:44 (five years ago)

nah I might vote seriously but it'll be pissing into the wind of their super-cool music-as-brand readership

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 16:47 (five years ago)

It's telling to see the "autofill" options that they've pre-populated.

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 16:57 (five years ago)

What shall we bomb that poll with. Coombes? Gotta be something more Pitchforky

Something that pairs well with an IPA?

MarkoP, Monday, 23 September 2019 17:17 (five years ago)

macklemore

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 17:47 (five years ago)

I just submitted a ballot. Was really annoyed that they had the album option for "In A Poem Unlimited" but not "Half-Free". By the time we got to "songs" there was a tonne of stuff that was missing. Oh well

fgti (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 23 September 2019 17:50 (five years ago)

You were allowed to type in your own choices, you weren't limited to the pre-populated ones (the instructions said just use the "Artist - Title" format)

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 17:51 (five years ago)

You mean Artist: Title! Big difference lol

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 17:52 (five years ago)

Richard Dawson is not an autocomplete but Keith Richards is. I call for a full and lasting boycott of pitchfork.com

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 17:55 (five years ago)

Apologies – the “Artist - Title” format is a registered trademark of Imago/ILM Poll GmbH

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 18:06 (five years ago)

Piss has met wind. The only two that autocompleted were Weyes Blood and ATCQ. So much for that. Fuck doing the tracks obv except I might vote for Pen Pineapple Apple Pen ten times

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 18:16 (five years ago)

actually I will do the tracks later, the poll is too strong with me :(

archie, marry me does seem like an odd omission

devvvine, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:38 (five years ago)

we shouldn't give a shit what these wankers think. they've been the self-appointed keepers of the key for 20 years and they've done nothing with it except set up a us-centric canon of a particularly dull, zeitgeist-chasing hue. no alarms, no surprises, no point. we should let them subside into an irrelevant, embarrassing joke. no shade to anyone here who's written for them obv, you're good writers and your reviews deserve a better home

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:45 (five years ago)

I'm also furious 'Teenage Dream' just missed the Top 100 but come on now...

nashwan, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:56 (five years ago)

the whole 'handing out scores and BNMs by committee based on trend positioning' model is just so fucked and bullshit, that issue underlies the whole problem

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:00 (five years ago)

if brad or alfred or whoever wants their review to have a 9/10 score atop it then goddamn it, give them their 9/10

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:01 (five years ago)

think we should all be suspicious at their attempts to put together a canon, whatever anyone thinks of the actual choices

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:02 (five years ago)

my point exactly. obviously i like/love plenty of these songs

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:04 (five years ago)

(well, a few)

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:05 (five years ago)

and our 00's poll isn't comparable, before anyone starts out with 'but YOU'RE building a canon!' - a) we are not a public-facing brand advertisement corporation, b) our choices will be inevitably highly personal and anti-canonical and c) our polling process is very thorough and, ideally, forces us to engage with a vast multiplicity of music before we make any decisions

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:09 (five years ago)

also we're just a bunch of mates having fun, basically

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:09 (five years ago)

so let's be cool

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:10 (five years ago)

The list stinks. Pitchfork stinks.

When are the readers’ lists published? Maybe those will be better.

Spry at 78 (morrisp), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:10 (five years ago)

they won't lol

lowercase (eric), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:10 (five years ago)

I hope the decade-defining song which they'll be pilloried for missing is released in october 2019

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:33 (five years ago)

No kidding; I don't get that. Why not wait a few months?

Spry at 78 (morrisp), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:52 (five years ago)

because nobody will be interested in 2010s retrospectives between 31/12/2019 and 01/01/2030.

Meanwhile I am currently making a mix of 2018 to be released in January 2020, they are smarter than me.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:57 (five years ago)

websites still run on magazine schedules in 2019

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:59 (five years ago)

around the holidays my back issues of www.pitchfork.com really start to pile up.

Pitchfork stinks! Just wait till they publish the list of their hopelessly devoted followers, ha!

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 7 October 2019 19:14 (five years ago)

Well, I voted in that poll, lol. I’m assuming Pfork readers may have some interesting picks.

Spry at 78 (morrisp), Monday, 7 October 2019 19:31 (five years ago)

Wish I'd have voted now :)

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 7 October 2019 20:31 (five years ago)

the more interesting question would be if anything showed up in this list that had not been previously 'celebrated' via inclusion on one of their older lists, bnm designation etc.

dyl, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 00:56 (five years ago)

For starters: Avicii - Levels

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:02 (five years ago)

i'm so perplexed that that site continues to single out kurt vile's "baby's arms"... that song is not even a particular standout on that album, much less for the entire decade. isn't it just a song that they just gave bnm as a token at the time b/c it was the first track on an (admittedly great) album w/ no real 'singles'? idgi

dyl, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:05 (five years ago)

Hahaha I hadn’t noticed that was the KV song they picked. Yeah I struggle to think that would be one of the top 200 songs this decade, let alone the best song he released. Any of his top 5 songs on spotify would be a better choice.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:19 (five years ago)

Runner-Ups is the real highlight from that album

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:54 (five years ago)

No sign of This Is America is a surprise in the pitch4k list.

piscesx, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 02:43 (five years ago)

GvsB list is a million times better than the Pitchfork one. Really feels like the only lists worth looking paying attention to for this decade will be ones made by individuals (or in this case, a couple of people) rather than the huge groupthink branding exercise lists.

triggercut, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 02:51 (five years ago)

Feel like P4k have just opened the floodgates here. Here's Uproxx's albums list:

The GvB list has a more unitary aesthetic (in that odd way a stylistically diverse multi-genre list can seem unitary) but it’s correspondingly more myopic, I think.

Tim F, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 07:50 (five years ago)

Love that GvB list, also seems like we love the same KL song. TPAB might be his best record but the best standalone songs from KL this decade come from GKMC imho (money trees, art of peer pressure, sing about me).

I was putting together my favourites from the 2010s while I was trying to vote in the 2000s poll, so here are the 100 songs of the 2010s I picked, in a rough order from top to bottom. Not a curated list but hey, here it is if anyone wants to look. I haven't really paid much attention to 2019 yet so its missing this year altogether I think.

yeah, good list, just baffles me that something like Tkay Maizda - U-huh does not make it onto things like the pitchfork list because why? too pop? no angle to take on it? seems like loads of great music is lost to them because they insist on viewing it down a series of narrow lenses.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 20:21 (five years ago)

There’s some really good songs in that list that I hope get more attention outside of ILM but I haven’t seen them hyped anywhere else.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:01 (five years ago)

tkay maidza shows up a couple of times when you search the pitchfork archives but basically she's not on anyone's radar outside of triple j and like...the singles jukebox

monotony, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:21 (five years ago)

Diddy & Dirty Money, The Dream, Sun-El Musician, Owen Pallett, Tkay Maidza on that list, to name a few, are great songs from good albums that I have seen love thrown around ILM but seldom see mentioned elsewhere.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:32 (five years ago)

the pitchfork album list is pretty much as expected, isn't it? like aside from, say, mitski being their #1 last year and landing at #64, artists like miguel and rustie missing out, and 4 placing higher than lemonade, it seems as though there are few surprises if you've followed their site this decade

monotony, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:33 (five years ago)

Beyond anything else, Blonde as the best lp of the decade is simply bizarre, I don't even dislike it but in what way is that the pinnacle?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 22:37 (five years ago)

god, i like a handful of them, but like the aesthetic range in that top 10 is paper thin as compared to the great big wide world of music. it's sad. or rather it'd be sad if it meant anything.

alpine static, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 23:04 (five years ago)

I don’t get Blonde. Maybe if he was a better singer? Maybe if it had more interesting production choices? Channel Orange has enough hooks to ignore the weakness within but Blonde is all about textures and his voice but they don’t interest me enough to do a full album that sounds like this.

production-wise there’s also an insane amount of clipping on his vocals

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 23:21 (five years ago)

agree there were more memorable songs on Channel Orange, but I also like the texture and ambience of Blonde

Seems weird publishing a list with Big Thief's UFOF at #33, when its companion album is dropping in a few days. Like you'd want to wait and see if that one is good too.

Yeah, good list. One question: which Respect The Drumboss did you pick? All of Heavy K’s albums have that title. I’m guessing it’s the 2013 one, or perhaps the 2015 one, and probably not the 2018 one, but who knows?

breastcrawl, Thursday, 10 October 2019 16:51 (five years ago)

actually intended 2015 -- 2013 is dope ofc but i came to that late, "givemeluv" was one of my most listened songs that year (i regret not making space on the singles list, but that excuse was how i justified not ranking, like, rihanna singles on the songs list)

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 11 October 2019 00:13 (five years ago)

imago, Monday, 4 November 2019 21:05 (five years ago)

stereogum is one of the few sites that actually pays people to go in-depth about particular songs and albums, so they are a net good even if their taste can run towards the corny side. they also promote some pretty excellent guitar-oriented music that few other sites touch on.

it's the americanness of it all that's the lost stultifying part perhaps? idk I'd almost want to analyse these lists - pfork, stereogum etc - on an artist-by-artist basis and work out the curatorial parameters, the boxes being ticked, the consensuses they're trying to manufacture

nothing against lists, but there's something about these that gives me a sick feeling the deeper I scroll, and I know I'm not alone in this

imago, Tuesday, 5 November 2019 16:06 (five years ago)

there are a bunch of songs in the 200-101 range (the only part of these lists i look at tbh) that probably won't make the cut on lots of other decades list. katie dey, girl band, polo g, tirzah, frightened rabbit, colleen green, etc., are all solid choices that have little-to-zero chance of making to in other lists.

and the poptimistic choices in that region (zedd, jidenna, fetty wap) appeal to me, personally.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 5 November 2019 16:46 (five years ago)

Beyonce had great singles for sure but I'm a bit sceptical about all those albums that are being included on the PF list. Kacey Musgraves is some nondescript stuff too and the canonisation of Frank Ocean baffles me.

Also Pitchfork include Aviary as the sole Julia Holter pick and HYIMW is nowhere to be seen. Ridiculous.

The World According To.... (Michael B), Tuesday, 5 November 2019 16:49 (five years ago)

The bottom 1/3 of this list is cool. The top half is mostly what we can expect to see in thousand similar lists just arranged differently. The top 3 is even the same ones as pitchfork.

I hope the next decade we’ll see a rise of more focused publications. I know the line between music genres is blurred every passing year but this so called diversity in music actually feels very homogenic by the time these lists come out and everyone is picking the exact same 3 albums and songs as the best in their genres.

Hahaha I don’t have a problem with the list, I just wish the more unique spirit of Stereogum that can be perceived in the bottom 100 would remain in the top 100. It’s not just their problem is a problem that many publications have had and it’s very noticeable at the end of the decade. Publications having a distinct personality and subculture used to be an asset.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 5 November 2019 17:51 (five years ago)

the problem is that time is circling back in on itself, causing the universe to distort, and many people are saying, the internet is shrinking down to a single website that aggregates all others and is able to maintain a consistent, albeit tiny, profit margin.

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 November 2019 18:00 (five years ago)

I mean the audience is to blame too. The moment a publication realizes it gets 10x more clicks writing about Kanye West instead of say, Bon Iver, the strategy shifts to an attack on al fronts. Let’s write about Avicii, Ariana Grande, Animal Collective the same day, three times the chance of getting the interest of different readers.

It’s a trend that even infected music festivals. It’s become a kind of travelling circus that goes around the world with virtually the same “diverse” lineup but with a different festival name.

It’s killing actual diversity in music to only get “the cream of the crop” in any given year but it’s not surprising why it’s happening.

Weird list but I like that it has vaporwave, witch house and reggaeton and also a fixation on trap since those were definitely genres that dominated through the decade and haven’t been as prominent (if featured at all) on previous lists. This list kind of feels to me like the most “sounds of the 2010s” so far. It’s far from perfect and I think they’re overrating a bunch of these albums but makes me excited to read a singles/tracks list from them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 November 2019 10:48 (five years ago)

Many of those genres produced better songs than actual albums. I don’t think I can name an album in those genres that I’d rate a 10/10 but I can easily think of singles that would.

that vice list is very weird in places but that at least makes it interesting

the weirdest pick is justin bieber - journals which i don't remember ever seeing anyone advocate for before and in my memory the purpose singles were his only real critical breakthrough. journals had a bizarre release strategy though that made it very overlooked by both critics and the public compared to what you'd expect from someone of bieber's popularity. a weird inclusion like that definitely has me curious at least

canons are an exercise in compromise, decade-end lists are not really the time or the place to erase the arguably boring music beloved by a certain vocal demographic from the canon. in 20 years if it's really boring nobody will care about it and we can all sit back and laugh. merits? tame impala have an audience and aren't obviously evil.

I like that these lists exist. None of them ever match what I like at all. Out of a list of, say, 200 I'm lucky to find 1 or 2 songs or albums I was unaware of that I wind up liking. Good enough for me. Literally could not care less about a canon.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:50 (five years ago)

I fully endorse the Power Trip placement.

o. nate, Friday, 8 November 2019 01:45 (five years ago)

my point stands that there are certain artists cropping up in all of these lists, creating an undisputed canon that i just can't get with. exhibit a: tame impala but there's like 60/70 that are ubiquitous regardless of their merits

― imago, Thursday, November 7, 2019 8:41 AM (twelve hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

it's called 'lowest common denominator'. i'm not crazy about them or anything, but imho tame impala are a relatively good lcd band. they have a really good drummer, and the 'always going backwards' song is catchy

flopson, Friday, 8 November 2019 02:11 (five years ago)

"speaking of canon" erm isn't that the whole reason threads like this are even made? i'm surprised there isn't more pushback to the idea that we ought to keep reflexively making threads like this every single time list season starts up again

Dean Blunt's Black Metal is pretty good but I think The Redeemer is great

Classical Curves is an interesting choice

i will never understand how upset you can get that other people like records you don't

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 00:40 (five years ago)

Classical Curves being in there makes a lot of sense considering the make-up of the rest of that Clash list, it's a very FACT list and the ballot contained a lot of FACTish writers. There's an element of canon construction in all of these but it feels especially on-the-nose here, but when the list contains Popcaan, John Talabot, Sons of Kemet, J Hus, JME, DJ Rashad and the new Kano I'm OK with that.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 09:52 (five years ago)

It also feels *very much* like an albums list composed by people whose primary listening is to largely non-album genres.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 09:54 (five years ago)

the difference between this list and a FACT one is that FACT are quite wilfully not on-the-nose in their lists generally (and all for the better). this feels like a midpoint between FACT and the more typical sort of lists that come out of big US publications. there's still a lot to like about it as Matt said. i expect Classical Curves will show up on a lot of other UK lists, it seemed to be a real favourite among slightly left of center UK publications. generally i find UK lists to be a little more interesting as there's fair amount of stuff that just doesn't crossover to the US (and thus the rest of the english-speaking world) unfortunately

still have never understood anything from Dean Blunt though

also had no idea "Juice" was missing from the streaming version of Acid Rap - what's up with that, was it a sample issue or something?

ufo, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 11:10 (five years ago)

Even regional US scenes have a tendency to be erased in the big publications' lists.

(Also 'Juice' was the one I always found myself skipping so props to the streaming version there)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 11:20 (five years ago)

it’s a sample issue iirc

Classical Curves includes a very out-there mutation of instrumental grime, but it also feels like it is much more than that

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:18 (five years ago)

it stimulates some of the same pleasure centers for me as Daniel Lopatin’s music

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:21 (five years ago)

I love almost everything he’s done this decade but Dean Blunt is a hard sell for most of my friends except those who smoke weed. And even them can’t stand him more than two songs in a row. I might need to meet more people.

The Babyfather side project is also slept upon a lot. I get so offput by that offensively tacky album cover for BBF, but I give it a pass because God Hour is one of my favorite things he’s done.

I remember at the time writing about The Suburbs on some message board (not this I am pretty sure) and wondering if all the songs sounding pleasant enough but ultimately all the same and seemingly never-ending was meant to be some sort of meta-comment on urban sprawl.

they probably are but their recent enough "best albums of the life time of the quietus" (iirc) was really weird and atypical for them because they asked a much wider range of contributors than usual for their votes

I have no idea why AT has garnered so much avant-garde cred and not, say, Kairos or Wergo or Neos or Outhere's sadly dormant Aeon imprint, each of which has put out infinitely more interesting records in my estimation. Actually, I think I know why: AT is British and thus more in tune with the tastes of English-speaking listeners. (Just thinking out loud here – I enjoy AT's releases for the most part.)

Pomenitul, what do you think of Sono Luminus' releases of the last few years, all the Icelandic stuff they've been doing?

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 21 November 2019 22:11 (five years ago)

At times the stuff they release is a little too soundtracky or John Adams-y or neo-Romantic (in the bad sense) for my admittedly idiosyncratic ears, but most of it is really solid and I salute their commitment to Anna S. Þorvaldsdóttir's music in particular, as she is one of my favourite living composers. I'm also glad they've got Jenny Lin and Matei Varga – superb pianists both.

this is a surprisingly quite good list! "good day" at #1 is a strange, boring pick though - it's a decent song and was one of iu's biggest hits but hardly represents what made kpop so exciting this decade

ufo, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 06:33 (five years ago)

Some decent tokenistic picks in that Allmusic list, alongside the usual ubiquitous trash.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 09:37 (five years ago)

that kpop list *is* pretty good. a lot of my favorites in the top 30. “i am the best” should've been no. 1, maybe obvious but, like, is there anything better

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 13:34 (five years ago)

i don't know if it'd be my personal #1 but as far as being both Important and Really Good goes it's the obvious pick yeah. certainly the defining song of the defining sound in kpop of its time. i have a few minor quibbles with some of the order and the song picks (like i'd go for "likey" as the best twice single of the decade over "tt") but they're really quite minor overall, it's a great list.

ufo, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 13:43 (five years ago)

"tt" is one of my favorites of the decade! but i cld see "likey" as the representative pick-- to pull from a tsj blurb, "it’s a perfect balance of charming leap and trembling flail forward, doing its best to never sound as starved a record as it is"

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 13:53 (five years ago)

(whereas "tt" does sound starved, "i'm like"s and fake-"oh well" sighs and the overcompensating glide of the second verse and the trying-to-be-rousing claps hitting all that point of like, keeping forward momentum to not trip all over yourself)

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:10 (five years ago)

(*all hitting)

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:12 (five years ago)

(which ig is more a matter of difference in degree btwn the two songs than anything, so personal preference... anyway!)

Rolling Stone list is pretty predictable but seeing Pistol Annies all the way up at #9 (albeit for their second-best album) was a nice surprise. cool to see J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Rosalia placing as well.

end of year and decade from Amanda Petrusich, accompanied by an essay that I wish was much longer. very intrigued to see her singling out a largely forgotten Beck album as a decade high-water mark.

*lj voice* god what a dull list

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 16:23 (five years ago)

I’ll admit that at the start of 2019 I was feeling down about popular music and the increasingly gutless way we consume it. One of the early promises of the Internet—that it might democratize criticism in a generative and exciting way—hadn’t quite actualized for me. It felt, instead, like there were fewer places to read about music than ever, and nearly all of those places—self-implication alert!—were covering the same handful of artists, in almost the exact same way.

like, it's weird to read this and then read her lists

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 16:27 (five years ago)

can we have a thread for bad-faith descriptions of poptimism in decade-end coverage?

maura, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 16:30 (five years ago)

ig i'm missing sfj now?

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 16:31 (five years ago)

lol i have seen someone specifically bemoaning the lack of that beck album on any lists though, the internet's a big place

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 16:35 (five years ago)

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 17:09 (five years ago)

obviously amanda petrusich does

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 17:11 (five years ago)

it's just part of the in-house style guide

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 17:16 (five years ago)

I like to kid about being totally out of the musical loop but these lists reveal that I've very successfully (if not entirely intentionally) avoided contemporary music for basically an entire decade. Almost everything I'm at all familiar with is from 2010. Yikes.</old>

i actually back the quietus to do a decent decade list tbf, there won't be as much scope for boring wibbly ambient-experimental bollocks as in their eoy lists

imago, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 17:56 (five years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if tQ doesn't join in w/ a eod list.

Also, it is my very unscientific opinion that the percentage of "boring wibbly ambient-experimental bollocks" has gone down steadily over the last years?

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 18:02 (five years ago)

Lovely to see Bad Debt get a mention, albeit it's the very essence of a minor record, swamped by the very notion of what's around it and the notion of a decade list of this size.

I think that's a pretty good list in terms of not trying to make critical judgments but just presenting the songs that made a big splash.

o. nate, Sunday, 8 December 2019 01:15 (five years ago)

Yeah, I like that BB list — it’s a nice mix of personal faves (including unexpectedly recent tracks like Rosalía’s “Malamente”); stuff that’s not my bag but was “important”; and then a few LOL / 🤔 picks like Rebecca Black / “Friday” and Weezer / “Africa.”

New Car Smell (morrisp), Sunday, 8 December 2019 02:27 (five years ago)

Like, including “Let It Go” and “My Shot” (among some of those other picks) seems genuinely smart.

there's some pretty damning stuff in that twitter thread too (publishing noted white nationalist mike cernovich is probably the worst)

^^^ I'm putting together a "best jazz of the 2010s" piece and had to think really hard about whether to include that record or not. It's fantastic, but ultimately I had to cut it to make space for things that had broader cultural resonance.
