Do you mean the Mars Argo stuff? If it is, yeah that's a fairly deep rabbit hole and I can't engage with her stuff the same way after reading about it. Unless there's even more than that?
― ascai, Monday, 4 November 2019 16:57 (five years ago)
Yeah I do!
On April 17, 2018, Sinclair's former collaborator and partner Mars Argo filed a 44-page lawsuit in Central California court against Sinclair and Poppy alleging copyright infringement, stating that Sinclair based Poppy's online persona on hers, as well as emotional and physical abuse Sinclair had allegedly subjected her to in the period after their separation and the subsequent abandonment of the project. On May 7, Poppy made a public statement about the "frivolous" lawsuit, saying Argo was attempting to manipulate her psychologically. She called the suit a "publicity campaign" and a "desperate grab for fame".It was settled out of court on September 14 "with no money exchanging hands".Argo released a statement in January 2019 that all rights to Mars Argo had been assigned to her as part of the settlement.
― gyac, Monday, 4 November 2019 16:59 (five years ago)
I was just going to stop by this thread to say I'm considering going to a Poppy show just for the spectacle of it all. That lawsuit thing is heavy tho.

i enjoy a lot of this! "concrete" is friggin great.
i do feel like the juxtaposition of pop and heavier stuff works best when the heavy stuff is as well thought-out and complex as the poppy stuff -- like the power metal-type leads and straight industrial moments are a lot more interesting than like, chunky limp bizkit riffs.
love the "wouldn't it be nice" reference in concrete too

the grimes comparison really only makes sense for "sit/stay", which belongs to the same sort of industrial pop territory as "kill v maim". though if grimes actually made the metal album she kept threatening to i'd imagine it'd probably sound fairly similar to this but probably not as good.

This is ... something. Very 90's sounding somehow. 'Concrete' and 'Sit/Stay' the clear highlights. The jarring shifts between "songs within songs" are pretty crazy but kinda gimmicky and distract from some genuinely great musical sequences.

Def see the '90s thing.
I'm struggling to hear how it's much more than a basic version of Grimes.
Poppy & Grimes are both mining the same Japanese styles, which, tbf, is a completely irrational thing for me to be annoyed about because people can take influence from wherever, but it does annoy me.
― emil.y, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:36 (five years ago)
i definitely hear the jpop metal/rock-tinged idol (ie babymetal, momoiro clover z, bis) influence on poppy but i think the influence of jpop on grimes has been pretty overstated beyond her saying she's a fan of like, perfume and kyary in interviews

What's cool about this record is, if you don't care for a song, it will change genres in about 20 seconds so just sit tight.
She needs to go all in on the whole post-genre thing, and make an entire record like Concrete, which covers about 5 in one song.

Admittedly, it's been a long slog. Do you know how many threads on grime I had to get through, just waiting for the moment to strike?
Poppy thinks she's David Bowie, and can just change styles and concepts every couple years. But she'd be nowhere wtihout Titanic Sinclair. He made her. And she cheated on him with a performer named Ghostemane, fired him and then tried to erase his contributions. Then she leaked that he attempted suicide out of despair, and made it sound like she was the real victim...and then used it to promote her stupid album. Poppy is a piece of garbage.

Given Grimes' words dealing with Poppy/Sinclair et al, I definitely feel some sympathy to the brother's side of the story. Having loosely followed this drama over the years, I felt they were both shitty people. Poppy's comments exposing Sinclair's attempting suicide and its impact on the family (stated by his brother) is BS, and reprehensible. It's certainly not the first time this sort of thing has happened in Hollywood. That said, drama aside, the video/song is good. What Poppy does moving forward will be interesting.
Perhaps Titanic Sinclair should change his name? He's probably ostracized at this point though. For everyone automatically alleging his status as an abuser, take a minute to also truly internalize the perspective his brother states above (despite his lack of carriage returns; it was Reddit, you need two there).
FWIW all the drama is a classic case of "don't shit where you eat"

― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:14 (four years ago)
i didn't really expect that to be representative of anything in the same way that i wasn't expecting the impressively bad noise EP she put out last year to be either

― G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:46 (four years ago)
but yeah the last album was very good and this is too! she's really upped her game a lot! i am amused that she is opting for a St Vincent look here.
― G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:48 (four years ago)
Huh. I don't mind what I've heard from Poppy at all but this performance is kind of a sweet/sour-spot blend of "I'm enjoying this" and "This is calibrated to sound like the guitar is a mosquito tied down to a splinter and shoved into my ear."
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:49 (four years ago)
i despise poppy and have from the second i encountered her a few years ago. just had to register that i guess.

"eat" is just the same version as that grammys performance it sounds like, still fantastic though

i think i'm just going to keep this on loop all day, she really understands exactly what i want out of metal it's incredible

Poppy's one of those contempo artists where everything's about streaming, so it's SO FUCKING HARD to work out how to buy her music, especially in FLAC.I'd love the EPs on CD, but that ain't gonna happen (blessed that I got I Disagree on CD though!)
― raven, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:35 (four years ago)

― raven, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:39 (four years ago)
i was just about to point you there, 7digital/zdigital etc. is about the only reliable place for FLACs or even mp3s apart from bandcamp for artists who use it these days, now that google play music is dead

― ufo, Friday, 18 June 2021 06:28 (four years ago)
This EP is really the best? I didn't really get her earlier stuff because they all sounded like two or three unrelated songs mashed together, but this is brilliant from start to finish.
― braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 20:55 (four years ago)
the only previous track that i'd say really felt like a bunch of different songs mashed together was "concrete" but it did so in a really fun way that worked

"Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen" !!!
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 23:01 (four years ago)
this is fine but nowhere near as exciting as the EP
have no objection to a JMJ-produced alt rock album on the way from her though?
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 23:04 (four years ago)
Liking this better than the EP stuff but then again I'm more into 90's MTV alternative nostalgia than processed metal.

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 24 September 2021 18:12 (three years ago)
I’d say if I have a reservation it’s that there’s something a bit conventional abt the songcraft which is extremely strong but I kind of wish it had a few more traces of the aggrieved/extreme tendencies that gave it such early shock factor
― xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 24 September 2021 21:09 (three years ago)
*aggro not aggrieved
― xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 24 September 2021 21:15 (three years ago)
yeah this album is solid but ultimately its alt-rock pastiche is just less exciting than her previous pop-metal stuff which was a much more distinctive niche
― ufo, Saturday, 25 September 2021 00:40 (three years ago)
I don’t mind the mainstreaming It just feels a hair too fast to me

― assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 25 September 2021 04:57 (three years ago)
Really like this new album. I feel like I both agree and disagree with deej's comments above, in that:
1. Yes this is less distinctive/surprising than the earlier stuff
2. Her specific current vibe, which out of laziness I will just call "Eight Arms To Hold You", is (a) a vibe that I really connect with, probably more than her previous sound once novelty is set aside, and (b) one which requires stronger songwriting than her previous approach in order to sustain, and I think she rises to the challenge accordingly
3. "Stronger songwriting" is relative and as she becomes hookier she risks inviting comparison with other hooky artists whose hooks may more memorable than hers, though I need to sit with this longer to decide just how memorable they are. I revisited Sky Ferreira's album shortly afterwards, and at this stage of preliminary assessment I'm not sure anything here tops "Boys" or "You're Not The One" or "Heavy Metal Heart". But I might change my mind in a day or two!
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 08:23 (three years ago)
i don't think the hooks are stronger on this one than on i disagree
― ufo, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 09:01 (three years ago)
that’s correct : I think the songwriting is better, and (separately) the style she is working in now places more pressure on the hooks to perform, but neither of those things necessarily translate into the hooks being better.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 09:52 (three years ago)
I’m not so much concerned with her needing to be hookier, I do think *some*thing is lost in just visceral intensity (beyond shock factor) which isn’t to say it’s not replaced by something equally valuable … I don’t consider this a fall off by any means, just kind of mourning a future that never was
― xheugy eddy (D-40), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 21:02 (three years ago)
