That Vanishing Twin album is worth your time. A bit Broadcast-y with jazz flourishes.

I'd no idea Beck had an album out until I saw it on this list.

The World According To.... (Michael B), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:05 (five years ago)

The Beck album isn't out till November 22.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:07 (five years ago)

did you know there was once a time when we did not feel compelled to make one of these threads every single year

feeling more cynical about 'list season' + the role of all the publications feeding into it w/ each passing november

dyl, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:38 (five years ago)

Eh, I thought it was always meant as a handy resource for one place to find all the lists as they got released and kept from having a separate thread for every individual list.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:40 (five years ago)

I did know that cause someone already whined about it in some other thread, as if anyone gives a shit

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:49 (five years ago)

yeah that was probably me but thanks

appreciate u sharing ur incisive opinion, which i have so far failed to notice in any other threads but which i will make sure to give a great shit about sometime before the day is thru

I think I've heard a dozen of these, but I might be confusing one band for another (like, I've probably heard Crypt Sermon or Magic Circle, but not both).

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 20:59 (five years ago)

Not bad. I've heard a disturbing number of those. I'll try to dial back the headlong rush into up-to-datedness next year, I think.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 21:08 (five years ago)

Speaking of albums yet to be released. I feel like I've been hearing about that Blood Incantation album all year so far and it still hasn't even been released.

Decibel's is usually one of my favorite lists to see, nice mix of stuff I liked and incentive to check others out. I still haven't gotten around to that Crypt Sermon record. Otherwise I've only heard about a third of this year's list.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 22:01 (five years ago)

I need this thread because it's my main source of new music and the only time of year when I listen to much from the present day, who rates what where is pretty unimportant, I just want leads.

Not that interested in the same old lists from culture mags though, if anyone finds best {whatever specific (sub)genre} track lists, pump that shit right into my veins please. Also ambient LPs.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:23 (five years ago)

yeah, this thread ... is good

alpine static, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:31 (five years ago)

god, did that Inter Arma album really come out this year? that feels like forever ago.

alpine static, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:55 (five years ago)

Seconding the love for that Vanishing Twin album. Wonderful record.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 09:30 (five years ago)

Seeing Blood Incantation place that high caught me by surprise, but without question it's a very good album. That proggy second half is especially strong, some visionary stuff lurking underneath the murk.

They really like their singer auteurs, huh.

pomenitul, Thursday, 14 November 2019 13:44 (five years ago)

17. Modern Nature - How to live

this is v good! sneaked onto my list too

The World According To.... (Michael B), Thursday, 14 November 2019 14:11 (five years ago)

about as good a list as uncut could have mustered. bear in mind my sole judging criterion for these lists will be whether they put weyes blood over lana del rey

imago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 14:26 (five years ago)

Uncut top 10 would probably look a lot like mine, minus Bruce.

Chris L, Thursday, 14 November 2019 14:36 (five years ago)

this is a tough time of year for me because i went way over the top listening to acclaimed records last year, my list of favorite 2018 records was far too long. and i'm sure there are a lot of records like that this year too since i haven't even been trying to keep up.

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Thursday, 14 November 2019 14:40 (five years ago)

I didnt even know Wilco had a new one out.

The World According To.... (Michael B), Thursday, 14 November 2019 14:54 (five years ago)

Yeah that Modern Nature is really, really good. Making me feel a little better about Ultimate Painting splitting up. Hoping to see the Possible Humans debut pop up on a few lists, that's another great record.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 14 November 2019 15:03 (five years ago)

That Joan Shelley album is lovely.

Modern Nature's downcast, electroacoustic gentleness reminds me of the Notwist.

pomenitul, Saturday, 16 November 2019 12:27 (five years ago)

the artwork for the Waterboys album is extremely cheap and 90s low budget tacky, I’m intrigued

brimstead, Saturday, 16 November 2019 19:41 (five years ago)

not that I’ve listened to anything they put out this decade!

brimstead, Saturday, 16 November 2019 19:42 (five years ago)

Wait, there's a new Delines album?!

Simon H., Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:23 (five years ago)

and it came out in January? damn that got like zero press huh

Simon H., Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:27 (five years ago)

ah fuck unperson already posted it sorry

Simon H., Monday, 18 November 2019 19:33 (five years ago)

I've listened to two tracks from that Blood Incantation record and it's just leaving me completely cold. I like death metal a lot, but there's just nothing there, to my ear. The acclaim it's getting baffles me.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Monday, 18 November 2019 19:52 (five years ago)

still mystified by Gatecreeper worship tbh

Simon H., Monday, 18 November 2019 20:07 (five years ago)

There is a lot of bad, bad music on this list.

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 01:49 (five years ago)

the devil wears prada are a legit good band now

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 01:49 (five years ago)

brutus are awesome, the korn and slip knot records are awesome. what’s to complain about

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 November 2019 01:50 (five years ago)

what's to complain about

Blood Incantation, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, 3TEETH, Ithaca, Angel Du$t, Venom Prison, Une Misère, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes, and Killswitch Engage are all on a scale from "OK but not exciting" to actively terrible. And I'm frankly ashamed that Angel Du$t are on a label I used to work for. Oh, and Tool suuuuuck.

Piccadilly Records:

Top 100 Albums

Top 20 Compilations

groovypanda, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 11:41 (five years ago)

I have a perverse enjoyment of WPSE but they have absolutely no place on a) a top 25 list b) a "metal"/"hard rock" list. I do like all the records brad cited tho (and Spirit Adrift and obviously Baroness)

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 November 2019 12:51 (five years ago)

Probably 80% of that Piccadilly list unfamiliar to me

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 23:02 (five years ago)

Their compilations lists are always worth checking out. Usually find 3 or 4 amazing ones every year.

groovypanda, Thursday, 28 November 2019 07:39 (five years ago)

<3 Piccadilly but they have some strange affections - I checked out the W. H. Lung (#1) and Andrew Wasylyk (#3) albums off the back of the list and yeah those are not the best albums of 2019. Good point on the comps though.

hmmm, couldn't really get into a few of those (treanor, klein, twigs) but the caterina barbieri is the best thing i've heard from her (wasn't much of a fan before tbh). that nathan micay is good fun too!

Wee Bloabby (NickB), Thursday, 28 November 2019 17:07 (five years ago)

spent the afternoon trawling through the piccadilly list and now i mostly hate music btw

Wee Bloabby (NickB), Thursday, 28 November 2019 17:11 (five years ago)

really enjoying your mix, Soundslike !

budo jeru, Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:18 (five years ago)

I have been going through the rolling threads and after listening to half of the uk grime etc thread I already love 2019. Not looking forward to exploring the disinterested synth tracks which seem to do well in the hip polls, but sure there will be a few gems amongst the meh

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:30 (five years ago)

will reserve a spot at the weekend to listen to the musicophilia mix, cheers!

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:31 (five years ago)

the 2018 musicophilia list had loads of really excellent just-under-radar stuff to dig into and 2019 list looks likewise - thanks for putting the hours in, Soundslike!

I second this. Discovered some great hip hop last year through that list.

Glad to be of service! So much excellent music being made these last few years, has me more excited about contemporary music than I've been in the 27 years I've been a certifiable music geek.

will reserve a spot at the weekend to listen to the musicophilia mix, cheers!

― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, November 28, 2019 7:31 PM

I'm really happy with it as a mix, and as representative of a major facet of what I love about new music these days. Not trying to be comprehensive, but more make a case for a particular feeling and sound-world.

the caterina barbieri album is p frontloaded but at its best it hits a certain video game music–adjacent sweet spot that, as also noted re the recent cfcf album, is v appealing (& easily recommendable)

lowercase (eric), Monday, 2 December 2019 13:29 (five years ago)

Was completely unaware of William Doyle until today. This album is terrific.

Peloton-gifting husband (morrisp), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 05:49 (five years ago)

Loving the Caterina Barbieri album.

Tim F, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 08:37 (five years ago)

I enjoyed it as well but its placement is baffling to me.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 08:54 (five years ago)

In broad terms yes, though I’m not sure that any of the albums quietus list after it are better aside from the These New Puritans album.

Tim F, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 09:01 (five years ago)

Regardless, it's one of the better lists I've seen so far, if only because it features a solid amount of intriguing-sounding records I've yet to hear.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 10:41 (five years ago)

i can't take anyone serious who reps for rinse like Fat White Family - make them go away pls!

calzino, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 10:53 (five years ago)

haven't been into William Doyle's previous album as East India Youth but this new one is sounding good. the quietus always seem to rep for the same artists over and over, many of which i don't understand the appeal of at all but this time i'm glad it was worthwhile

ufo, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:16 (five years ago)

xp
agree. I'm either missing something or they are legit terrible

YOU CALL THIS JOURNALSIM? (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:17 (five years ago)

quietus have gotten 'looks intriguing but is in fact quite narrow and dull' to an absolute tee tbh

imago, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:45 (five years ago)

Not wrong, alas.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:46 (five years ago)

relative lack of Purple Mountains from many lists is shitty and goes to show how much impact touring/general press activity has on an album's placement - or lack of it - in these lists. David's death so close to the album seemed to have made its impact a lot lower than i would have expected. personally i think its probably one of the best albums about depression and suicide ever written - and almost certainly his best album.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:46 (five years ago)

that said I'll probably check out most of the ones I've not heard yet

imago, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:47 (five years ago)

purple mountains was literally top of a list about twenty posts ago! a lot of albums get released nowadays and it isn't possible to put them all in one list. that said, i feel similarly about weyes blood who is very much alive and currently touring, and certainly not in every list either, so idk really - maybe it really just is a matter of the listmakers having different tastes to us, or just not hearing enough records

imago, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:55 (five years ago)

yep i spotted that one - was nice to see you - but i've also seen it totally absent from a bunch of lists

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 12:20 (five years ago)

'nice to see' that should be, don't know where the 'you' came from

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 12:20 (five years ago)

Oh shit, I've been meaning to check out that Stephen Mallinder album!

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 13:56 (five years ago)

weird that The Ringer would have precisely two people collaborating on a list rather than just a single critic or everyone relevant on staff. I wonder if Zoladz will do a list, I'm sure hers would be better.

Yeah. Weyes Blood is doing very well too

groovypanda, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 15:32 (five years ago)

Genuinely surprised by the high placing of Nick Cave in these lists. I love the man but Ghosteen is nothing short of edelkitsch to my ears.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 22:42 (five years ago)

i get why it's not for everyone but it's one of his very best works imo

ufo, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 22:48 (five years ago)

Really? I love Skeleton Tree, but I don't think I'm nearly ready for Cave wringing out the sponge new-age style like this. It must not be for me, and I respect that, but oof.

I don't know if I'll ever understand 75 Dollar Bill

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 17:34 (five years ago)

I much prefer Natural Information Society in terms of that general tranced-out zone--Mandatory Reality was their strongest album yet IMO, with the opening 65 minutes/first two pieces on it truly psyching me out as a longer Feldman piece might

Wallet Youth (Craig D.), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 17:43 (five years ago)

75 dollar bill are great live! also fun on tape but i haven't listened to I Was Real yet.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 17:52 (five years ago)

I'm surprised that each Sunn album got a separate slot in the top 50; I voted for them collectively. (Jaimie Branch was my #1.) I wish I liked that Zonal record more. Maybe if Moor Mother was on the whole thing, instead of just the first half. Or maybe if she wasn't riffing on Billy fucking Corgan.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 18:05 (five years ago)

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 18:06 (five years ago)

I'm listening to 75 Dollar Bill right now and I'm hearing "if Sunburned Hand of the Man were really into North African desert blues". I'm...kinda into it and might buy it on Bandcamp to have something to listen to while doing laundry tomorrow.

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 00:37 (five years ago)

I hate a lot of his stupid opinion pieces but I admire his approach to his year-end list and there are often at least a few things I wind up checking out.

whiney is your 75 dollar bill issue that they wear their influence on their sleeve and you'd rather just hear bombino or somethin'?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 5 December 2019 03:50 (five years ago)

No, they’re just not sticking w me for whatever reason.

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 December 2019 04:38 (five years ago)

Listened to the 75 Dollar Bill album this morning while doing laundry, and I’m into it. It’s basically “Endless Boogie covering Tony Conrad & Faust” (the title track is, anyway) and that was a very pleasant surprise.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 5 December 2019 12:57 (five years ago)

I'd never heard of 75 Dollar Bill until about ten seconds ago and here they are on two back-to-back lists.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 December 2019 13:10 (five years ago)

Getting a slight Rangda vibe from that 75 Dollar Bill rec, which is fine by me.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:23 (five years ago)

This is some really solid cultural appropriation.

pomenitul, Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:27 (five years ago)

i remember the name (it's a memorable name) because they were big on wfmu the last time i was listening semi-regularly. didn't get what people heard in them then and don't get it now, honestly... i've heard enough instrumental psychedelic jams that i tend to be picky about them!

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:42 (five years ago)

i got them confused in my head with Two Dollar Guitar

Wee Bloabby (NickB), Thursday, 5 December 2019 14:52 (five years ago)

I think the Burial 2011 to 2019 album is so beautifully sequenced. It is an an archival recording but I love all of these tracks and hearing them all together in this way makes this the album of the year for me

Dan S, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:00 (five years ago)

It's funny, just a few weeks before the compendium was announced, I'd realized all the recent EPs/12"s were on Bandcamp and boyght them all based on people repping them here. So I've gotten really used to them chronologically--I'll have to give it a shot as Burial himself has sequenced it...

Soundslike, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:44 (five years ago)

I'm also agreeing with more stuff in the RS list than I thought I'd ever be. I'm not sure if that means a turnaround for Rolling Stone or for me. I suppose it might be part of growing older: get to 40, start thinking about your retirement savings, begin going to doctors more often and find yourself in agreement with RS and Mojo.

I mean I can agree with some of these but Sturgill, Brittany Howard and Wilco on top?? It reminds me of that RS list from a couple years ago with U2 and the odds and ends Springsteen album at #1 and #2 respectively.

still just don't get it with "cellophane," there are at least 3-4 better songs on that album alone, and it's not even one of my favorites of the year.

pubs should just start putting their thumbs on the scale (if they don't already) and making the #1 something's truly emblematic/representative of the year. for 2019 imo that means either "Old Town Road," "bad guy" or, if you want to go indie, Big Thief's "Not."

For sure. I’m an idiot so I really don’t know when (and how) I should do this. Any tips would be genuinely appreciated. If you’re curious, I did this, like I’ve done my lists from that past few years, by just dumping the release name and release artist from Discogs.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 9 December 2019 17:42 (five years ago)

Ah, that makes sense. For non-classical music, I usually go with 'Main Artist - Album Title' and for classical music I switch to 'Composer - Album Title (Performer(s))' if the composer is the main artist and 'Performer(s) - Album Title' if they're not.

i listened to a fair bit of the jazz stuff that popped through on bandcamp. for some reason kind of got into guitar jazz. ben monder's "day after day", olli hirvonen's "displace", stein urheim's "simple pieces & paper cut-outs". i don't know why those grabbed me this year. anyway i missed hearing the jaimie branch somehow, i like it!

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 03:03 (five years ago)

How did I not know there was a new Monder release?

I really liked branch's first Fly or Die album but somehow just never got around to the new one. I will!

that ldr album is classic rock as fuck. long, self-indulgent genre exercises, recycled melodies, careful cultivation of skin-deep mystique, throwaway cover that nonetheless offers respite from the drudgery, press tantrums, and the conservative-yet-trendseeking music press at her beck and call. she is at or near the top of every list, and she must be defeated

rob, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:27 (five years ago)

It's a Canadian 'new music' site with ime a distinct aesthetic that is a little tricky to describe; contemporary classical and jazz releases that share qualities with ambient music but are more chopsy than post-rock? Kamancello are from here. I had stopped following. I should check this one out.xps re Textura

No language just sound (Sund4r), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:32 (five years ago)

I like a lot of the Textura jazz picks, but yeah, those albums all have more in common than not, and "share qualities with ambient music but are more chopsy than post-rock" covers it pretty well. I would also describe it as the kind of jazz where everyone on the bandstand, including the drummer, needs a music stand.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:45 (five years ago)

Their ambient is all "everything is going to be ok" ambient, not so much "everything is fucked and we're all going to die" ambient. I have time for both tbh.

man it's just wild sometimes to think about how much music there is. that Textura list is marked "General" and yet I have never heard of a single one of those artists.

― Evans on Hammond (evol j)

i was going to say the same on first glance except i namechecked the stein urheim upthread!

that's kind of my goal in terms of music. to react to 90% of everything a given person will mention with blank stares and then they hit on that one thing that they're going to assume nobody else has heard of and i've heard it.

i listened to their #1 pick, the tignor, and i liked it. i hadn't heard of his tuning fork thing before - if it was ever a schtick, i don't think it is now. probably it makes him more marketable but we all need to get people's attention somehow.

i try to be attuned to terroir when it comes to music - my approach implicitly demands it - and it's a new york thing but i'm ok with that. i could easily spend all my time listening to music only from new york, it's a world unto itself with all sorts of interesting things happening, so i try to limit myself. having heard two records on the textura list and liked both of them, i'm consciously not going to listen to anything more because at some point i have to live my fucking life.

there's a really hacky david-lynch-noir-lite thing going on, add that to the superconfident self-branding of a rich kid with an increasingly global fanbase and you have yourself a sellable product. it signifies talking about america and existential despair in shedloads without doing any substantial talking imo - she's not what you'd call deep. occasionally writes a decent melody but nothing special. it has always been about the vibe with her, the cool and affected signification of noir, and in late-stage neoliberalism, superficial displays of limitless relevance are seized upon and propagated. comparisons to joni mitchell are not unwarranted in some ways except mitchell existed at the intersection of surface and depth and her art was not branded product but a nuanced, extremely personal response to the uncertainties of her age, therefore making her a great deal more interesting as a songwriter, a thinker and a person

imago, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 23:23 (five years ago)

i like NFR well enough but that's fairly accurate imago, though i like her melodies much more than you. she's not a particularly interesting lyricist and i don't get the praise over that, but the rest of NFR is enough to carry it for me despite that weakness

ufo, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 23:52 (five years ago)

Why I like LDR:

• The melodies and arrangements, and the production in general; her music sounds lush and extremely well put together by people who know what the fuck they're doing in a big-money studio
• One or two really great lines per album, and the way she strings banal and/or clichéd images together in order to create something more than the sum of the parts; she's a trope-collagist

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 00:06 (five years ago)

Rachid Taha - Je Suis Africain ( late bad boy of Algerian pop) Yas indeed---"Just call me Rai Cooder." he quipped long ago, doing Western rock a reverse-Coody missionary favor while teaming w Steve Hillage and Galactic on Made In Medina, one of my all-time faves (Songlines reviewer Nigel Williamson said this was what Page & Plant were *trying* to do w some of Taha's neighbors on Unledded---and then some, I say). The new one is a rich shady grove-trove, just a bit bittersweet, nad made my Uproxx ballot, as might others from curm's list if I'd gotten out more (lots of great lists here). Most of my rest was recent jazz, thanks to Rolling Jazz.

just trying to convey why i'm not persuaded by the music. obviously i stan for some extremely 'inauthentic' fare but i can't hear much motivation behind ldr's music other than 'i am a big deal', it's not the inauthenticity i object to so much as the lazy presumption of importance encoded into every interview, review, the odious explanation for the album title, the impeccably-recorded aor of it all. if that attitude was combined with interesting lyrics or music i'd see the point more, but i find neither, so i don't.

Mostly out of curiosity, I wish every year-end list came with a separate list of how many albums from the previous year's list the writer(s) is(are) still listening to.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 December 2019 18:34 (five years ago)

xpost Thanks for posting, I haven't kept up with much metal lately, but there are some albums on that list that, on first skim, immediately caught my ear, like the Obsequiae.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 December 2019 18:44 (five years ago)

I generally get a lot of great tips from the lists on boomkat from folk whose music I enjoy, moreso than their main lists. Carla del Forno's list this year is really interesting.

Thanks Alfred! This thread is blowing my mind--knew I was ignorant of much, but---!
Prob of little interest here, so I'll just link https://www.nodepression.com/no-depression-readers-50-favorite-roots-music-albums-of-2019/?mc_cid=4108cafd3a&mc_eid=b850f832a1
My picks from these (several didn't make this Top 50, but ballot not at hand)
numbers are placement in Top 50, not my ballot:
1. Tyler Childers – Country Squire
3. Sturgill Simpson – Sound & Fury
18. Rodney Crowell – Texas
22. Allison Moorer – Blood
26. Justin Townes Earle – The Saint of Lost Causes
39. Patty Griffin – Patty Griffin
All of those have some trans-genre/subgenre/ appeal for the rock-inclined, especially Sturgill, as I said on Rolling Country:
have you heard Sturgill's Sound and Fury yet? I just did, and right off, seems like this ZZ Rex electro-pop-boogie, sometimes also reminding me of Neil and the Trans Band (more the show tapes than studio album), might suit you too. It's much less soapbox ranty than I feared---and the non-pedantic retro detailing, commercial inclusiveness x righteous fencepost grievances x deserty-hot-cold broodiness, also that voice, keep it all country or countryoid. Also 'ppreciate how he keeps twisting the dial into another track at just the right moment, or close enough. It's a hard candy Christmas alright.

dow, Saturday, 21 December 2019 23:22 (five years ago)

X-post — years ago I remember some noting here that the Wire had a critic covering Dub reggae but not dancehall. Not really seeing dub or dancehall on any Wire contributor list. Am seeing some US & UK rap & jazz, but not really any reggaeton or Afro-Latinx jazz. Looks like a few African acts but not many.

https://remezcla.com/lists/music/10-best-latino-latin-american-spanish-albums-of-year-2019/

Less "urbano" than I expected, but still strongly represented. 1.'This Is How You Smile' by Helado Negro;2. 'Oasis' by Bad Bunny & J Balvin; 3. 'Ahomale' by Combo Chimbita; 4.'Almadura' by iLe;5.'Sueños' by Sech; 6.'Foam' by Divino Niño; 7. 'Soy Piedra' by Belafonte Sensacional;8.'Sombrou Dúvida' by Boogarins; 9.'System' by Debit ; 10-Joterías Bobas’ by Hidrogenesse

Not really seeing many Latin jazz albums on lists. The genre seemed formulaic years ago, but still hangs on. Pancho Sanchez did a Coltrane tribute I see. The NPR jazz critics poll usually has a separate Latin jazz category, but the 2019 poll is not posted yet.

All in all, continuing the streak of really excellent years through the latter half of the 2010s, my favorite new-music period since the 1980s. Did a Top 75 albums, and have since discovered another 10+ that would easily have made the list--including Sault's two LPs that would probably both make the top 5 if I'd heard them in time.

NPR Jazz Critics poll

Plus separate lists for Latin Jazz, Jazz vocals and more

curmudgeon, Thursday, 16 January 2020 20:13 (five years ago)

The only predictable winner was in Latin Jazz: Miguel Zenon's Sonero, the alto saxophonist's fifth victory in this category. But Eric Dolphy's Musical Prophet: The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions upset a "new" John Coltrane album in Reissue/Discovery. Relative newcomer Jazzmeia Horn's Love and Liberation won in Vocal. The winner in Debut is annually a newcomer, of course, and in 2019 this was Joel Ross, for KingMaker. But the biggest surprises of all were in the voting for Album of the Year, with an unprecedented five women in the Top 10, all for the first time, and Kris Davis finishing on top, for her self-released Diatom Ribbons.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 16 January 2020 20:50 (five years ago)

Kris Davis winning surprised me, and I voted in that poll. As I said on Twitter, it's a good album (I interviewed her about it in September), but it doesn't strike me as "critics' poll jazz."
