I think I've heard a dozen of these, but I might be confusing one band for another (like, I've probably heard Crypt Sermon or Magic Circle, but not both).

Not bad. I've heard a disturbing number of those. I'll try to dial back the headlong rush into up-to-datedness next year, I think.

Speaking of albums yet to be released. I feel like I've been hearing about that Blood Incantation album all year so far and it still hasn't even been released.

Decibel's is usually one of my favorite lists to see, nice mix of stuff I liked and incentive to check others out. I still haven't gotten around to that Crypt Sermon record. Otherwise I've only heard about a third of this year's list.

I need this thread because it's my main source of new music and the only time of year when I listen to much from the present day, who rates what where is pretty unimportant, I just want leads.

Not that interested in the same old lists from culture mags though, if anyone finds best {whatever specific (sub)genre} track lists, pump that shit right into my veins please. Also ambient LPs.

Seconding the love for that Vanishing Twin album. Wonderful record.

Seeing Blood Incantation place that high caught me by surprise, but without question it's a very good album. That proggy second half is especially strong, some visionary stuff lurking underneath the murk.

about as good a list as uncut could have mustered. bear in mind my sole judging criterion for these lists will be whether they put weyes blood over lana del rey

this is a tough time of year for me because i went way over the top listening to acclaimed records last year, my list of favorite 2018 records was far too long. and i'm sure there are a lot of records like that this year too since i haven't even been trying to keep up.

I didnt even know Wilco had a new one out.

Yeah that Modern Nature is really, really good. Making me feel a little better about Ultimate Painting splitting up. Hoping to see the Possible Humans debut pop up on a few lists, that's another great record.

That Joan Shelley album is lovely.

Modern Nature's downcast, electroacoustic gentleness reminds me of the Notwist.

the artwork for the Waterboys album is extremely cheap and 90s low budget tacky, I’m intrigued

Blood Incantation, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, 3TEETH, Ithaca, Angel Du$t, Venom Prison, Une Misère, Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes, and Killswitch Engage are all on a scale from "OK but not exciting" to actively terrible. And I'm frankly ashamed that Angel Du$t are on a label I used to work for. Oh, and Tool suuuuuck.

I have a perverse enjoyment of WPSE but they have absolutely no place on a) a top 25 list b) a "metal"/"hard rock" list. I do like all the records brad cited tho (and Spirit Adrift and obviously Baroness)

Their compilations lists are always worth checking out. Usually find 3 or 4 amazing ones every year.

<3 Piccadilly but they have some strange affections - I checked out the W. H. Lung (#1) and Andrew Wasylyk (#3) albums off the back of the list and yeah those are not the best albums of 2019. Good point on the comps though.

the caterina barbieri album is p frontloaded but at its best it hits a certain video game music–adjacent sweet spot that, as also noted re the recent cfcf album, is v appealing (& easily recommendable)

Loving the Caterina Barbieri album.

I enjoyed it as well but its placement is baffling to me.

In broad terms yes, though I’m not sure that any of the albums quietus list after it are better aside from the These New Puritans album.

Regardless, it's one of the better lists I've seen so far, if only because it features a solid amount of intriguing-sounding records I've yet to hear.

haven't been into William Doyle's previous album as East India Youth but this new one is sounding good. the quietus always seem to rep for the same artists over and over, many of which i don't understand the appeal of at all but this time i'm glad it was worthwhile

relative lack of Purple Mountains from many lists is shitty and goes to show how much impact touring/general press activity has on an album's placement - or lack of it - in these lists. David's death so close to the album seemed to have made its impact a lot lower than i would have expected. personally i think its probably one of the best albums about depression and suicide ever written - and almost certainly his best album.

that said I'll probably check out most of the ones I've not heard yet

purple mountains was literally top of a list about twenty posts ago! a lot of albums get released nowadays and it isn't possible to put them all in one list. that said, i feel similarly about weyes blood who is very much alive and currently touring, and certainly not in every list either, so idk really - maybe it really just is a matter of the listmakers having different tastes to us, or just not hearing enough records

Glad to see Ted Gioia list Mississippi’s Jimmy Duck Holmes on his album list. While not quite as raucous as Fat Possum label RL Burnside releases from the past, Holmes has a unique charm to his blues sound that work.

I think the Burial 2011 to 2019 album is so beautifully sequenced. It is an an archival recording but I love all of these tracks and hearing them all together in this way makes this the album of the year for me

It's funny, just a few weeks before the compendium was announced, I'd realized all the recent EPs/12"s were on Bandcamp and boyght them all based on people repping them here. So I've gotten really used to them chronologically--I'll have to give it a shot as Burial himself has sequenced it...

I'm also agreeing with more stuff in the RS list than I thought I'd ever be. I'm not sure if that means a turnaround for Rolling Stone or for me. I suppose it might be part of growing older: get to 40, start thinking about your retirement savings, begin going to doctors more often and find yourself in agreement with RS and Mojo.

For sure. I’m an idiot so I really don’t know when (and how) I should do this. Any tips would be genuinely appreciated. If you’re curious, I did this, like I’ve done my lists from that past few years, by just dumping the release name and release artist from Discogs.

Ah, that makes sense. For non-classical music, I usually go with 'Main Artist - Album Title' and for classical music I switch to 'Composer - Album Title (Performer(s))' if the composer is the main artist and 'Performer(s) - Album Title' if they're not.

i listened to a fair bit of the jazz stuff that popped through on bandcamp. for some reason kind of got into guitar jazz. ben monder's "day after day", olli hirvonen's "displace", stein urheim's "simple pieces & paper cut-outs". i don't know why those grabbed me this year. anyway i missed hearing the jaimie branch somehow, i like it!

that ldr album is classic rock as fuck. long, self-indulgent genre exercises, recycled melodies, careful cultivation of skin-deep mystique, throwaway cover that nonetheless offers respite from the drudgery, press tantrums, and the conservative-yet-trendseeking music press at her beck and call. she is at or near the top of every list, and she must be defeated

yeah i'm gonna say that an album with a nine-minute slowcore song on it is not necessarily the poptimist prize-winner

I've heard all but two of these albums, and the Jamael Dean one sounds particularly interesting.

I listened to some of the Dean the other day, definitely worth checking out. Maybe a touch too much exactly what you'd expect from "jazz album on Stones Throw" but well executed

It's a Canadian 'new music' site with ime a distinct aesthetic that is a little tricky to describe; contemporary classical and jazz releases that share qualities with ambient music but are more chopsy than post-rock? I like a lot of the Textura jazz picks, but yeah, those albums all have more in common than not, and "share qualities with ambient music but are more chopsy than post-rock" covers it pretty well. I would also describe it as the kind of jazz where everyone on the bandstand, including the drummer, needs a music stand.

Their ambient is all "everything is going to be ok" ambient, not so much "everything is fucked and we're all going to die" ambient. I have time for both tbh.

i was going to say the same on first glance except i namechecked the stein urheim upthread!

that's kind of my goal in terms of music. to react to 90% of everything a given person will mention with blank stares and then they hit on that one thing that they're going to assume nobody else has heard of and i've heard it.

i listened to their #1 pick, the tignor, and i liked it. i hadn't heard of his tuning fork thing before - if it was ever a schtick, i don't think it is now. probably it makes him more marketable but we all need to get people's attention somehow.

i try to be attuned to terroir when it comes to music - my approach implicitly demands it - and it's a new york thing but i'm ok with that. i could easily spend all my time listening to music only from new york, it's a world unto itself with all sorts of interesting things happening, so i try to limit myself. having heard two records on the textura list and liked both of them, i'm consciously not going to listen to anything more because at some point i have to live my fucking life.

Frode Haltli's Border Woods is norsk avant-folk for the accordion-minded – always a delight.

Glad to see Kelsey Lu on the FACT list, surprised that isn't getting more EOY love.

there's a really hacky david-lynch-noir-lite thing going on, add that to the superconfident self-branding of a rich kid with an increasingly global fanbase and you have yourself a sellable product. it signifies talking about america and existential despair in shedloads without doing any substantial talking imo - she's not what you'd call deep. occasionally writes a decent melody but nothing special. it has always been about the vibe with her, the cool and affected signification of noir, and in late-stage neoliberalism, superficial displays of limitless relevance are seized upon and propagated. comparisons to joni mitchell are not unwarranted in some ways except mitchell existed at the intersection of surface and depth and her art was not branded product but a nuanced, extremely personal response to the uncertainties of her age, therefore making her a great deal more interesting as a songwriter, a thinker and a person

& to be clear, I don't actually hate NFR! - I gave it 5/10 and it could have been 6 - but the ldr phenomenon is a different story, and the music press is where i'm mostly pointing the finger

i like NFR well enough but that's fairly accurate imago, though i like her melodies much more than you. she's not a particularly interesting lyricist and i don't get the praise over that, but the rest of NFR is enough to carry it for me despite that weakness

Why I like LDR:

• The melodies and arrangements, and the production in general; her music sounds lush and extremely well put together by people who know what the fuck they're doing in a big-money studio
• One or two really great lines per album, and the way she strings banal and/or clichéd images together in order to create something more than the sum of the parts; she's a trope-collagist

Rachid Taha - Je Suis Africain ( late bad boy of Algerian pop) Yas indeed---"Just call me Rai Cooder." he quipped long ago, doing Western rock a reverse-Coody missionary favor while teaming w Steve Hillage and Galactic on Made In Medina, one of my all-time faves (Songlines reviewer Nigel Williamson said this was what Page & Plant were *trying* to do w some of Taha's neighbors on Unledded---and then some, I say). The new one is a rich shady grove-trove, just a bit bittersweet, nad made my Uproxx ballot, as might others from curm's list if I'd gotten out more (lots of great lists here). Most of my rest was recent jazz, thanks to Rolling Jazz.

just trying to convey why i'm not persuaded by the music. obviously i stan for some extremely 'inauthentic' fare but i can't hear much motivation behind ldr's music other than 'i am a big deal', it's not the inauthenticity i object to so much as the lazy presumption of importance encoded into every interview, review, the odious explanation for the album title, the impeccably-recorded aor of it all. if that attitude was combined with interesting lyrics or music i'd see the point more, but i find neither, so i don't.

I just did, and right off, seems like this ZZ Rex electro-pop-boogie, sometimes also reminding me of Neil and the Trans Band (more the show tapes than studio album), might suit you too. It's much less soapbox ranty than I feared---and the non-pedantic retro detailing, commercial inclusiveness x righteous fencepost grievances x deserty-hot-cold broodiness, also that voice, keep it all country or countryoid. Also 'ppreciate how he keeps twisting the dial into another track at just the right moment, or close enough. It's a hard candy Christmas alright.

X-post — years ago I remember some noting here that the Wire had a critic covering Dub reggae but not dancehall. Not really seeing dub or dancehall on any Wire contributor list. Am seeing some US & UK rap & jazz, but not really any reggaeton or Afro-Latinx jazz. Looks like a few African acts but not many.

All in all, continuing the streak of really excellent years through the latter half of the 2010s, my favorite new-music period since the 1980s. The only predictable winner was in Latin Jazz: Miguel Zenon's Sonero, the alto saxophonist's fifth victory in this category. But Eric Dolphy's Musical Prophet: The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions upset a "new" John Coltrane album in Reissue/Discovery. Relative newcomer Jazzmeia Horn's Love and Liberation won in Vocal. The winner in Debut is annually a newcomer, of course, and in 2019 this was Joel Ross, for KingMaker. But the biggest surprises of all were in the voting for Album of the Year, with an unprecedented five women in the Top 10, all for the first time, and Kris Davis finishing on top, for her self-released Diatom Ribbons.

Kris Davis winning surprised me, and I voted in that poll. As I said on Twitter, it's a good album (I interviewed her about it in September), but it doesn't strike me as "critics' poll jazz."
