ILM's 2019 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD

Vote Here: https://forms.gle/ZxTDQ6DSz7n1WNo39

How to vote: enter your tracks and album ballots (up to 25 items on each), one item per line, in the appropriate fields. Please copy each line directly from the nominations lists; do not number your ballot. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.

(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.

(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

Another way of thinking about mixed ballot: each record in the unweighted part gets exactly half the points of the lowermost weighted record.

The Spotify albums playlist reached maximum size, with just ulysses' final EIGHT noms outstanding, as far as I can tell. LOL. The remainder is here for now: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6YYa2YH7Sfyo4Qpz7vhwKE

I encourage any fans of musical theater to check out this demo of a song written (but not used) for Frozen II — it’s epic, and an absolute jam:

Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Patti Murin - I Seek the Truth

Anderson-Lopez, the songwriter, plays piano and sings the main (“Elsa”) part; Murin, who plays Anna on B’way, sings the “Anna” part.

Here's an excerpt from Edmund Finnis's The Air, Turning, for orchestra:

https://soundcloud.com/edmund-finnis/the-air-turning-excerpt

Softly ecstatic pastoralisms, very much rooted in the English tradition (from Vaughan Williams to Peter Maxwell Davies, Howard Skempton and beyond) with more than a dash of late Sibelius in its lexicon yet never so overwrought as to elicit skepticism. Nary a jolting dissonance in earshot, so post-Schoenberg naysayers shouldn't be afraid. To Richard Skelton fans: picture a more classically, academically-minded take on the man's aesthetic.

This is but an excerpt of many, as the album (also entitled The Air, Turning) features five additional compositions: a ghostlier, less immediately melodic work for violin solo, a slightly more nerve-wracked and chromatically contrasted piece for chamber orchestra, followed by an essay for string orchestra that flirts with light spectralism, as well as a more forceful series of four duets for clarinet and piano (featuring the ubiquitous Víkingur Ólafsson) and, in closing, a lyrically lavish mini-violin concerto that breaks no new ground but exudes an aura of its own. You can hear the latter's third movement here:

https://soundcloud.com/edmund-finnis/shades-lengthen-3rd-movement

All of it, I think, can rightly be called beautiful in the old sense. 'Boomkat classical' enthusiasts will likely enjoy this.

do i vote for this great song? i first heard it in 2019 and it's from a 2019 album, but as a single it had been out since '18

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fuind6upxyc

dyl, Sunday, 5 January 2020 04:56 (five years ago)

Is 2019 the "year of impact?" Then sure.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 5 January 2020 05:05 (five years ago)

Also, I'm listening to this song for the first time and I might vote for it too. My tracks ballot is going to be crazy this year because I wasn't really following along closely in 2019.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 5 January 2020 05:07 (five years ago)

Hmm... I didn’t realize “Me vs. Us” was released in 2018 (I nominated it). It certainly “impacted” me in 2019! (when it appeared on her album)... but if it’s deemed ineligible, so be it.

Can the rule be something like — if a track was released as a single the previous year, but didn’t place on that year’s poll; and then appears on an album released in the year being polled, it’s eligible?

Into the Bro-known: One Dude’s ‘Frozen’ Podcast (morrisp), Sunday, 5 January 2020 05:27 (five years ago)

That's generally how it's always worked, but I'm not in charge anymore. I bet it's fine, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 5 January 2020 05:28 (five years ago)

Seeing as my nominations were culled from Spotify by malevolent reactionary forces within Spotify I have struck a deal with Bob at YouTube to put them in their own playlist. Not sure how long it will last as industry insiders are already tracing this post

I've never campaigned before but when i nominated something that would seem to be in ILM wheelhouse, maybe this year should be different.

Clairo - Sofia:

Bee OK, Sunday, 5 January 2020 06:52 (five years ago)

I guess I'll do a bit of campaigning too... I nominated both the album Tierra del Fuego and this track from the Mexican techno producer Tayhana, because she's pretty much the best completely new artist I've heard this year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0o42VXjAnQ

I dunno if this even counts as techno, the synth riffs sound like they could be from some 90s horrorcore rap with their heavy, creepy vibe, and the beats are almost overwhelming in a way that recalls juke/footwork... It's really cool to come across an artist who has such an unique, fully formed sound straight off the gate on what is (AFAIK) her first official release.

If it's on the nominations list you can assume it's eligible (unless it placed in a previous year and we didn't spot it). Then it's up to you to decide whether it feels "2019" to you.

I just want to rep for a couple of my favourite songs real quick

https://youtu.be/5KBV_Kpcnbo

Purple Pilgrims - Sensing Me

Out on Flying Nun. I've been talking this act up in a few places. Video has a real strong goth component, which was not my impression at all from listening to Perfumed Earth--more like a trippier/spacier take on Arrival-era ABBA (the album's next track, "I'm Not Saying", makes the connection explicit). The chorus is undeniable imo and thr production lives up to copy which cites the duo's preoccupation with 'synthesized nature and ancient futurism'

https://multishiva.bandcamp.com/track/monoliitti-on-nyrkki-2

Multishiva - Monoliitti on Nyrrki

A complete 180 from Purple Pilgrims, this is some crazy-ass Finnish doom nuggets. I was into their 2017 album Time Messer as a sort of cross between High on Fire and Oranssi Pazuzu, but their new EP ups the game considerably, esp. on this howling slab of nightmare psych. They've pretty much fused BM fierceness with Hawkwind-style space rock, along with some Amon Duul II, and, idk, maybe Motorhead on a bad acid trip? If this EP had been just a little longer (only 25 minutes) it would absolutely have been in the top 3 of my albums ballot

Hey, I'm interested in voting for the first time. Just curious, is there a minimum number of albums for a ballot?

I should be able to fill it up anyhow. I might've only had around a dozen 2019 albums I was excited about before, but I've already discovered a bunch more from dipping into all this.

maffew12, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 00:53 (five years ago)

There’s no minimum. You could, for example, cast a single vote for Taylor Swift

En Avant de Guingamp Côtes-d'Armor (Breton: War-raok Gwengamp, English: Forward Guingamp), commonly referred to as EA Guingamp, EAG, or simply Guingamp (French: [ɡɛ̃ɡɑ̃]), is a French association football club in the commune of Guingamp. The club was founded in 1912 and play in Ligue 2, the second tier of French football, having won promotion from Ligue 2 following the 2012–13 season, the club was relegated back to Ligue 2 at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season finishing in 20th. Guingamp plays its home matches at the Stade de Roudourou in the city. It is unusual for a commune of 7,280 inhabitants to have a professional football club, let alone one that plays in the first tier. Also the stadium has a capacity of 18,000 spectators, roughly 2.5 times the commune's population.

I'll recommend a couple of thematically-linked things:

Over the last few years there has been a boom in Ukrainian artists combining folk elements with electro / R&B / rap - most prominently Onuka, who did the interval show at Eurovision in Kyiv. There's a bunch of great stuff in this vein from 2019.

Zventa Sventana ft Ivan Dorn - Muzha Doma Netu (Husband's Not At Home).

Alina Pash's Bosorkanya (Witch) plays up the occult / folk magic element:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFFCbN49jG0

Pash also appears on Padlo by Alyona Alyona, who started out as a primary school teacher in rural Ukraine making viral videos and within about a year was one of the country's top rappers. Her album, Pushka, is excellent.

Filmmaker is almost certainly the artist I've listened to the most this year. I nominated this album but could have easily nominated any other one of his, I just love this stuff. Dark, crunchy, reverby electronic. It all kind of sounds similar so it's hard to pick a standout track but at the same time I can't get enough of this stuff

the one item I want to share with everyone is Chanctonbury Rings, which is a great collaboration between Justin Hopper, Sharon Kraus and Belbury Poly. It's mostly spoken word with mystical electronics, exploring the occult history of the English countryside.

Tim F, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 22:39 (five years ago)

some local (or somewhat local) tracks ballot suggestions from me:

Sampa The Great - Final Form
Sampa's album The Return (also worth a listen and/or vote) sees her examining her personal relationship with Africa, and more particularly with Zambia, her nation of birth, and Botswana, where she was raised. This is honking braggadocio built around the Sylvers’ “Stay Away From Me" - it's probably not my favourite of her songs but it's her most forthright and packs a punch.

Ngaiire - Shiver
I've done plenty of talking to myself in the Ngaiire thread over the past half-decade or so and it still baffles me that she hasn't crossed over beyond Triple/Double J circles given the quality of her voice, which she here employs to literally bellow demons out of haunted corners and cobwebs. Allegedly her new album is coming this year.

Chela - Losing Belief
This is the sort of track that, you know, I'd hoped might turn up in the Popjustice end of year list or something just to give it a bit more of a boost. Chela's a Kitsuné alumna who came storming back this year with a new EP, entitled Delivery. This single was its highlight - in the face of adversity and winding synth patterns, Chela decides the best course is to spit out affirmations in a militaristic fashion.

J-E-T-S ft. Tkay Maidza - Real Truth
A collaboration between Jimmy Edgar, Machinedrum and the "U-Huh" should-be-superstar was always going to slap.

Thandi Phoenix - Cleopatra
"Say It", covered by the Singles Jukebox, is probably the more obvious hit, but I liked the kinetic nature of "Cleopatra", which feels like it has about three different choruses.

I really like that Ice Cream track! Saw the Alina Pash track on another thread and will definitely be voting for that one.

I guess I should rep for some stuff before everyone gets their ballots in, I'll do a couple of tracks first:

* Tóc Tiên - Không Ai Hơn Em Đâu Anh (KAHEDA)
Mentioned this a few times before, but this is my big pop banger of the year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU4s65RAAKQ

* Porridge Radio - Lilac
Intense emotional indie/DIY shout-along from B-town.

Some recommendations from me:

Jenny Hval - High Alice clear highlight on The Practice of Love imo
Kelsey Lu - Poor Fake See also Kelsey Lu - Blood
Richard Youngs & Raül Refree - Time Is An Avalanche spirals
Oren Ambarchi, Mark Fell, Will Guthrie & Sam Shalabi - Oglon Day 1 pitter-patter

Lankum - The Livelong Day
There's a thread called rfi-traditional irish music that sounds a bit like drone rock that only I seem to post to these days. If you like the sound of that, you may like the sound of this.
The Wild Rover
The Dark Eyed Gypsy

Fire! Orchestra - Arrival
Lush, deep, beautiful chamber jazz.

I'm a little biased against local-ish-to-me acts, but as with Stella Donnelly and Sampa the Great above, I've come to realise, song by isolated song, that I like Julia Jacklin's 2019 longplayer quite a bit. Not least this nominated track that doesn't seem to involve a third chord until a few minutes in, and which came with this amusing one-shot promo clip I first saw by chance on TV at 3:00am last week:

This was easily my most listened to reissue compilation this year and hoping it gets some love from the Balearic/Ambient/New Age ilxors

‘Broken Belief’ brings together a selection of recordings by Japanese multi-instrumentalist Toshfumi Hinata drawn from a body of work originally recorded between 1985-1987.

Attending Berklee College of Music after spending time living in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Hinata would study under the tutelage of pianist Patricia Laliberte, graduating from the esteemed American school in 1982. Returning to Japan after becoming disillusioned with his classical training, Hinata experimented with many different forms of music. Moving away from depending simply on acoustic instruments, he would instead become entrenched in the possibilities of the latest analog synthesizers being developed at the time.

Toshifumi Hinata’s initial idea was to make his first album with just a Prophet 5 and Linn Drum Machine. Tweaking filters and creating intricate sequences, Hinata would record various sounds on analog tapes and overdub many different layers; recording violin, piano and other accompaniments separately later on. It would become a method of working for the musician which he would apply almost entirely throughout this period. A deeply submerged process; one in which he would seek, as he himself puts it, to "weave musical images".

I enjoyed Ioanna Gika's album, "Thalassa" this year and I haven't seen much mention of her on ILX. Uh, I guess I'd call this dark ethereal synth pop. She toured with Chelsea Wolfe, but aside from their live set up and somber/romantic tone, they didn't share much in common. Anyway, the production on this album is kind of thin sounding and doesn't do the songs justice, but there are some top notch tunes here. I recommend starting with Out of Focus and trying Roseate next if you liked that.

I love County, so maybe not a well balanced review...!
Not a modern, flash new stadium but then that's half of the appeal. It's a proper football ground.
Depending on where, or if you sit in the Main Stand, walking from the turnstile to your seat you cross the players tunnel, as the players come out they'll shake hands, sign autographs, and where else would you get a club manager stopping for 'selfies' with young fans minutes before kick off?
For me, the game against Fylde September 2016, when Scott Spencer equalized, was the highlight of County's non-league 'adventure' and the start of what felt like a turn around for club and team. (Typically County eventually lost 2-1 to a late free kick scored by an ex-player...)
My Edgeley Park highlights - The whole 1996 - 97 league cup semi final run.
My worst Edgeley Park moment - 1-0 home defeat against Dartford, all but sending County down to Conf. National / division 6 regional football.

I thought it was a relatively disappointing year for country music. Loved Wildcard but it's at best Lambert's 5th best solo album. Most of the other critically acclaimed releases were too conservative and unmoving for my liking. I will probably vote for The Highwomen somewhere toward the bottom of my ballot.

One that I discovered during list season and would strongly rep was Michaela Anne - Desert Dove, a dusty, reverby, Southwestern country rock record that reminds me of Emmylou Harris's Elite Hotel at times. I'm voting for the album but also nominated the song "One Heart":

A few tracks I want to briefly stump for

Martha, "Love Keeps Kicking"
The whole album is wonderfully nimble and wry but this title track was a huge anthem for me all year, cause, you know, it really never stops kicking the shit out of you.

Sha Sha ft Samthing Soweto "Abondaba"
Of all the songs I heard on the wonderful rolling Sun-El and co. thread, this was the one that brought be right back to "Akanamali" levels of chills down the spine. Gorgeous, starlit, etc.

Fat White Family, "Kim's Sunsets"
A lot of people seem to hate these guys for some reason I can't quite fathom, but I liked a lot of their most recent album and this was the clear highlight for me, a blissful mid-tempo number with an impossibly lush arrangement and an infectious build.

Origami Angel, "The Title Track"
The platonic idea of uptempo emo, in 151 seconds.

Clipping, "Blood of the Fang"
Daveed Diggs gets ragged on for having a clinical, academic style of rapping, but if you aren't dazzled by the final verse (3:00), I don't want yr ears.

Fireboy DML's "Jealous" might be my favorite of the year, a perfect example of how effortlessly beautiful and elegant but still super catchy Nigerian pop can be:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00R4dOtzDIA

Campaigning for albums feels kind of fruitless in January, but the Resavoir album is about half an hour long, and in an overwhelmingly good year for jazz, it persisted as a personal favorite. Recommended if you ever liked any of the Tortoise-related Chicago jazz-ish scene plus 70s stuff like Phil Ranelin or Steve Reid

I got lots of bobbins recs I want to share, but probably one of my favorite albums of the year is also one of the best mixes of the year:

Kölsch - Fabric presents Kölsch

Probably one of the most pristine, beautiful and consistent mixes I've heard all year, and it's all new material in album form. Best thing he's done since 1977, and as a complete work I think this eclipses it. Not sure yet where it will be in my ballot but certainly the top half of it.

octobeard, Friday, 10 January 2020 21:38 (five years ago)

Aside from all the metal stuff, which I'm already repping for in the appropriate thread, may I also suggest Dmitri Kourliandski's Non-lieux? Kourliandski is a composer of contemporary classical music and usually writes for traditional instruments, so Non-lieux gives us a glimpse of what resonates through his mind when samples and electronic devices take over. Its first soundscape is to baroque music as The Caretaker is to British dance bands of the 1920s and 1930s, but it soon moves into an even busier and more abstract sphere of its own, which spins and diffracts itself for a fascinatingly disconcerting hour. And if you think hauntology is passé, well – duh?

VOTE! In the 2019 EOY Poll (seandalai), Friday, 10 January 2020 23:00 (five years ago)

Feels kinda late but I probably should give a push to some things I actually nominated...

Kit Sebastian. Haven't seen any mention of it here apart from in a handful of pasted-in EOY lists. It shares some vibes with the Altin Gün record (also on my ballot) in that they both draw upon an Turkish psych. Fuzz-bass and M/F vocals in multiple languages. Hurrah!

People Like Us has been doing the plunderphonic collage thing forever, but The Mirror is downright purty in its layering of often familiar source material.

Carl Stone, on the other hand, I've only come to this year. Finely sliced and diced samples FTW.

MIKE - the production sucked me in: some seriously roughly hewn sampling. Overarching lyrical theme of mortality and grief this time. He has a terribly search-resistant name so I've little sense of whether there's any love here.

Hannes Kerschbaumer - Schraffur [and other works]. Music for a variety of mostly small ensembles in a somewhat percussive post-Lachenmann et al vein, perhaps? Conventional instruments often rendered largely unidentifiable. More forward momentum somehow than some 'squeaky door' chamber music. I'd say the same for Ryan Carter (which was happily already nominated by pomenitul, IIRC.)

Some songs that I have warmed up to in the recent weeks:

Dj Spinall - Dis Love
Rosalía & Ozuna - Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi

Although I've listened to the long version all year, I must say the edit of Akulaleki is perfect.
Samthing Soweto - Akulaleki

The rest has been largely discussed on the afro-centric threads.

Wow, this is incredible! It's going on my list

Frederik B, Saturday, 11 January 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

gonna vote today, but first gonna stump for some of my favorites of the year

albums:
Yves Jarvis - The Same But By Different Means - An astounding bit of bedroom pop that's been climbing steadily up my ballot. If you liked the Helado Negro record (which i LOVED), but wish it was pricklier and more genre-fluid, this is the one for you.

Polo G - Die a Legend - It’s been a long time since I’ve been blown away by a new rapper like I was by Polo G in 2019. As dark as the subject matter can get, Polo stays afloat with crisp melodies that mix the emotional honesty of Lil Durk with the radio-ready slickness of Wiz Khalifa. His verses emerge fully-formed, telling full stories about his neighborhood that are equal parts harrowing and thrilling. He’s already mastered the art of the rap ballad, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Raveena - Lucid - Someone started a thread a while back, but it's definitely worth keeping this record in mind. the coziest, bubbliest, sweetest R&B album of the year.

G.S. Schray - First Appearance - In the year we lost Mark Hollis, this instrumental came closest to scratching that Talk Talk itch. Expansive, emotional soundscapes.

Tracks:
ShooterGang Kony - "Charlie" - The year’s most cold-blooded mob banger starts with the line “fuck the police and your mama if you ask me” and only escalates from there. Rhyming without affect over hiccuping bass, Kony mercilessly ethers cops, R&B singers, and women named Ashley before threatening to shoot you with a gun that sounds like Fozzy Bear.

KEY! - “Miami Too Much” – My favorite Atlanta rap song of the year gets its power from its hilariously specific central conceit, with KEY’s impassioned vocal selling the bit: “If you seen that ass, you’d make a song too.” How often must someone visit Dade County before it becomes an irreconcilable difference in an otherwise healthy relationship?

Spellling - “Real Fun” – Gleefully dramatic and overflowing with evil-sounding synths, “Real Fun” synthesizes Neneh Cherry, Bauhaus, and Cabaret into something that sounds like a villain’s theme in an animated musical that hasn’t been written yet.

Yhung T.O. - “Lately” ft. Lil Sheik - Easy, breezy, beautiful Bay Area rap, carried by T.O.’s dulcet tones and Sheik’s unrepentant dirtbaggery. The beat by Armani Depaul is one of my favorite retro-facing rap beats in a while, complete with smooth digital strings and security-pad synths.

Also, gonna second dyl's recommendation of "La Canción," beautiful song.

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Saturday, 11 January 2020 16:13 (five years ago)

Some trippy ambient/drone/nu-age/psychedelic soundscapes y'all might have missed:

Sarah Davachi & Ariel Kalma – Intemporel
https://blacksweat.bandcamp.com/album/intemporel

An absolutely legendary collaboration IMO — Sarah Davachi, conjurer of the most subtle and sublime drones of our age, meets 70s French new age wizard Ariel Kalma. They go real deep on this one. "Adieu La Vie" is my psychedelic drone ideal.

Andrew Pekler — Sounds From Phantom Islands
https://andrewpekler.bandcamp.com/album/sounds-from-phantom-islands

Serious "fourth world" music, similar to his album Tristes Tropiques from 2016. There are some field recordings and some bubbly/rustling synths and some sparse bending seventh chords. I don't know how to fully describe this one honestly. Songs that sound like Earthbound maybe? It is magnificent.

Pulse Emitter – Calming Winds
https://muzaneditions.bandcamp.com/album/calming-winds

The notes on Bandcamp say "This music is made to be calming and restorative," and it works tbh. Custom ambient synth patches that morph and melt into the infinite distance. This guy is just the best. This isn't on Spotify though :'(

Thore Pfeiffer – Umland
https://thorepfeiffer.bandcamp.com/album/umland

I listened to this one a lot back in the spring. It's springtime music.

Are there many regular posters on ILM who do not participate in the year poll as a matter of principle ?

― Nabozo, Sunday, 12 January 2020 16:17 (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

Might be lack of interest rather than principle but there are definitely regular ILMers that have never voted. There are even some that write up their own EOY lists but don't vote.

Just noticed that the wrong version of Bella Alubo’s “Agbani” is in the Spotify playlist. It should be the original version, not the remix, which is quite different and not as good imo.

This is the “proper” version, all 2 minutes and 16 seconds of it:

Rapsody's "Ibtihaj" ft. D'Angelo, GZA was new to me until it came up playing Singles noms on shuffle, and now it's getting my vote. The hook isn't as strong as the rest, but the rest makes up for it and then some.

PATERSON — Two city police officers chased down a 27-year-old suspect in the 5th Ward on Tuesday afternoon, tackling him as he tried to escape by climbing a fence, authorities said.

The incident took place about 12:45 p.m. after a resident alerted police about a man in a sheepskin coat and ski mask with a gun near the heavily trafficked corner of Market Street and Memorial Drive, said Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale.

Officers Erik Marino and Joshua Serrano spotted a man matching that description on 16th Avenue, Speziale said. When he saw the approaching officers, the suspect began to run, cutting through a lot and heading for a fence, police said.

I nominated a few albums from the Polish label, Instant Classic. There's a thread on them here.

Alameda 5 - Eurodrome (personal standout is "Cdte")
Innercity Ensemble - IV ("Suave Machines")
ARRM - II - ("Birth")

I think this is a label started by a couple of self-professed record collecting music nerds. If you're familiar with Stara Rzeka, you have an idea of where it's coming from. I kind of hate to lump it all together, but there's a common aesthetic to it all: I pick up on elements of psychedelic, punk, free and/or spiritual jazz, maybe retro, "hauntological", industrial, sometimes noisy elements. The biggest trait their releases all share is an adventurousness / fearlessness to the music. Each album is a journey for the listener. It's all kind of dreamlike and trance-inducing. I enjoy listening to these albums in a way that my attention drifts to and from it (it's great music to work or think to). I listen to them over and over at work, while walking, and on public transit. I guess I would recommend to fans of Alice Coltrane, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Swans, Sunwatchers, Kikagaku Moyo, Kim Gordon, and maybe Pyre Corner Audio, although it's definitely all pretty guitar based stuff.

As posted on the Rolling Afro 2020 thread:

To show and celebrate the embarassment of riches South African music had to offer in 2019, I made a playlist with all the nominated South African tracks and albums (including two tracks by non-SA artists with significant input by SA artists/producers: “That’s For Me” and “My Power”).

First the 36** nominated tracks, from “Sondela” to “John Cena”, and after that the 9 nominated albums, from Sho Madjozi down to Tresor, coming full circle. I arranged both tracks and albums in an approximation of stylistic order.

(My original intention was to give a bit of context and highlight some tracks and albums, and I might yet do that, but I’m happy to have this playlist sorted. So feel free to explore away, even if you’ve already voted or decided on your ballot. There’s a lot to enjoy!)

Here’s the playlist:
ILM 2019 EOY🇿🇦SOUTH AFRICA

**Missing is Heavy K ft. Moonchild Sanelly’s “Yebo Mama”, which is not on Spotify. This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lmdn52afm2U

(...and a note regarding Kwiish SA’s “Iskhathi”: The original vocal version that I love so much seems to have disappeared completely (I think there was a rights issue). The “Vocal Version” that is on Spotify (and this playlist) is no longer the original vocal version with, you know, actual vocals. There is a video version with re-recorded vocals by Vukani, but it’s not nearly as good.)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:04 (five years ago)

There’s more, again see the Rolling Afro 2020 thread: I also made a separate playlist with the nominated [non-South African] AFROPOP tracks and albums. Again, it’s tracks first, albums second, 51 tracks and 19 albums to be precise.

It’s “pop” in the broadest sense: My focus was on the stuff that’s featured on the Afropop thread, but I also included more leftfield stuff: DJ Nigga Fox, Hama and the four (!) Nyege Nyege Tapes albums that were nominated, and music that’s more within the remit of the Global Outernational thread, by KOKOKO!, Blick Bassy, Salif Keita, and Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba. Plus I included an Afropop cut of The Lion King: The Gift. And yeah, I basically excluded Afrodiasporic stuff.

Ultimately, it’s all a bit arbitrary obviously, and I might have missed some things, but whatever. So binge away, or maybe you’d like to shuffle, skip and cherry-pick. Hope you’ll find something to enjoy!

Here’s that playlist in full:

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 20 January 2020 05:57 (five years ago)

a little late with the stumping but:

Tapan - Ghana - tribal acid from the deepest mystical space of 2019, atmosphere so thick i wanna bite into it

Identified Patient - Geen Syndroom - catchy industrial sludge that inspires a sleazy dancefloor

Kontravoid - Too Deep - fun gothy EBM with romantic new wave heart

and an album:

RAP - Export - deserves its mixtape designation not just because the tracks are mixed, but the way its strong emotional core makes what could otherwise be showy or forced shifts in genre totally natural and necessary. its rhythmic/textural/melodic sensibility collapses dub, industrial, post-punk, techno, folk, synth-pop into something really affecting that avoids pastiche

Brad, first Sun-El, then “Sondela” and now this. I really think the best thing you could do at this point is just listen to the South African noms playlist I made (no people, I promise I won’t link to it again, you can find it slightly upthread). Also, bookmark the House of Sun-El thread if you haven’t already.

I voted for an album this time, and there were some other interesting looking ones (I always go straight to Various Artists for anything to do with albums) but I didn't get chance in time due to the weather

For the tracks I voted for 20. 20! I didn't think such a thing was possible, thats almost 1 in 2 and yet I look out at the garden and to me its still in danger of relegation

saer, Saturday, 25 January 2020 19:29 (five years ago)

Some things I discovered late or forgot to nominate:

Kölsch - Fabric Presents Kölsch
Dengue Dengue Dengue! - Zenit & Nadir
Lingua Ignota - CALIGULA

I mentioned the Kolsch record above, which was a shame because I assumed it was nominated. Didn't discover until I put together my final ballot it wasn't there. The Dengue Dengue Dengue is incredible and a late discovery. Had I heard it earlier I would have nommed it and placed it in my top 10. The Lingua Ignota is AOTY material for me... also a very late discovery. Yes it's more metal, and for the first time in a decade of being on here, I am submitting a metal ballot because of this album. It's that good.

Looking forward to the rollout. Sampa the Great and Little Simz were my Burna Boy and Big Thief I suppose.

I’ve seen the results and working on the graphics atm. Let me say: I don’t know if the main voters for this year changed or we had more or less voters than last year but the results are crazy. I’m willing to give 100 US dollars to anyone who guess the top 10 tracks. Hell, they’re so crazy I’m willing to give $1000 if anyone gets them right regardless of ranking.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 January 2020 05:52 (five years ago)

This is first year afaik that I actually put more effort into my albums ballot than my tracks ballot (I didn't even go the full 25), mainly because I wasn't as dialed into individual songs that came and went in 2019, so I really have NO IDEA what the results will look like. I voted for Old Town Road, though, lol.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 January 2020 05:54 (five years ago)

yeah I was trying to think of what might win tracks...my guess would be Old Town Road, Cellophane, Gone or...Don’t Start Now? But I don’t know if any of those really had overwhelming, galvanised support on here

monotony, Sunday, 26 January 2020 06:02 (five years ago)

Don't Start Now was my #2, but it had such a late release I'm not sure everyone listened to it 400 times like I did.

emil.y, Sunday, 26 January 2020 06:12 (five years ago)

glad to hear some unexpected things may have reached the top 10 -- that's usually the most predictable part!

Old Town Road, Cellophane, Gone or...Don’t Start Now?

i would like to think these are all too obvious to have done that well if the results are a bit unexpected. (i kinda hope so, anyway -- tho i did vote for two of them.)

i guess i suppose "don't start now" will do well. its appeal really seems to be quite broad here.

I think I naively assumed there were *generally* more track ballots than album ballots. (Likely because that's most often the case for individual artist polls.) I've learned something from the pretty graph.

Is the decline in the total ballots since 2013 vaguely in proportion to a decline in total unique posters over that period or something?

The tune Redesigning Women is so full of regressive stereotypes about women (Changing our minds like we change our hair color + And if the shoe fits, we're gonna buy 11 + Running the world while we're cleaning up the kitchen) that I was actually quite taken aback considering that it's supposed to be a song about...redesigning women. What the song was trying to do was so far from what it achieved that it turned me off checking out the rest of the project. Open to suggestions if there's better songs on there.

opden gnash (imago), Monday, 27 January 2020 15:07 (five years ago)

highwomen album is incredibly great, i know a lot of people here are allergic to dave cobb's production but it really works on it, rich with shadow but the guitar tones glow through it, making it feel like you've walked into a candlelit room. i've said this before but "loose change" is the best maren morris song of the year, and "if she ever leaves me" is maybe the best explicitly gay country song i've ever heard

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 27 January 2020 15:08 (five years ago)

i don't even mind "redesigning women" though the lyric is very clunky

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 27 January 2020 15:09 (five years ago)

"My Only Child" is one of the two or three best songs. Love how she hints at but doesn't directly resolve the question of why...leaves it up to the listener who may have their own experience. Hemby is the strongest piece of that puzzle, with a sharp eye for details and stories. Still listen to Puxico regularly.

The whole Highwomen project felt forced and calculated from the beginning, quite the opposite of the Annies, which have a better handle on real lives and struggles and have far more interesting things to say about them. There is nothing here with half the guts of "Best Years of My Life."

"Crowded Table" might be one of the stronger songs, but I find the four of them singing the whole thing together grating. I'm sure it translates live in some rousing acoustic closer but it doesn't work for me on the album.

Indexed, Monday, 27 January 2020 15:17 (five years ago)

hm peering into the highwomen album trying to discover the pistol annies album within seems to be missing the point to me. also i could say that no pistol annies album has a song as devastating as "cocktail and a song" but that would also be meaningless

hm peering into the highwomen album trying to discover the pistol annies album within seems to be missing the point to me. also i could say that no pistol annies album has a song as devastating as "cocktail and a song" but that would also be meaningless

Comparing the relative strengths and weaknesses of contemporary, popular, all-female country acts doesn't seem like a stretch to me. The Highwomen are a much more capital-s Serious group that demanded the industry take them Seriously, much like Carlile (who's very talented, but makes mostly boring music). Like many supergroups, it was a calculated idea--they'd never met or worked together (Wikipedia history below), and I hear that in the music.

"In 2016, when Shires was finishing her record, My Piece of Land, in music producer Dave Cobb's studio, Shires had an idea to create a female country supergroup in homage to the legendary Highwaymen country supergroup (consisting of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson). At the same time, the lack of representation of women artists on country music radio and at country music festivals had been publicly discussed by many, influenced by the Me Too movement and journalists like Marissa Moss. While on tour in her van, while listening to country radio, Shires kept a running list of artists and noticed that there were few women. When she called to request they play more women artists, she was directed to a Facebook page lottery system. Cobb recommended Shires call Carlile, whom she didn't know. Carlile thought it would be fun, and would be an interesting creative project."

the circumstances under which the supergroup was formed only makes the coherence of the album more impressive to me
