Lingua Ignota - Caligula
https://youtu.be/M1ZweG__q-w
I keep comparing this record to later Scott Walker material, maybe just because of the production. Everything sounds uncomfortably close, like she's two inches in front of your face, hissing and spraying blood between her teeth.

Elder - The Gold and Silver Sessions
https://youtu.be/Ra-zDXe8bNc
Elder went motorik. Also the band has moved to Germany full stop now, and they just hired a new drummer.

Moon Tooth - Crux
https://youtu.be/f5n78mg22VM
A little more pop-based structurally than Chromaparagon, but they still shred. No 12 minute closer on this one.

Amygdala - Our Voices Will Soar Forever
https://youtu.be/KI-aBqhzgKc
Queer anti-fascist hardcore is the future of hardcore.

Clouds Taste Satanic - Second Sight
https://youtu.be/awAzbomDsIM
This was the second of two single LPs CTS put out this year, and this one is a giant leap forward melodically, rather than just stoner riffs everywhere. It's exciting to hear them evolve.

Funereal Presence - Achatius
https://youtu.be/XKL3U9AXX8c
This'll teach me to not take Bandcamp's recommendations seriously. Video chosen for the ambiance (skulls!).

Sorry I didn't remember how to embed, I thought about experimenting with it but went with consistently doing it wrong rather than maybe getting it right once and breaking the other four links.

I may not vote for Caligula in this poll because only the trvest of the trve must be honoured but it sure as hell will make the top 10 of my other ballot.

Maybe odd for someone who championed All Bitches Die so heavily but I'm not feeling Caligula at all, even if on the surface it's just more of the same.

Siegbran, Monday, 6 January 2020 19:03 (four years ago) link

Submitted. Saw there was a Shin Guard repeat. FYI I went with the one spelled with 2 words if that sways which if any you remove.

Maybe odd for someone who championed All Bitches Die so heavily but I'm not feeling Caligula at all, even if on the surface it's just more of the same.

I felt that way at first, partly because of Caligula's length and its more sparing recourse to white noise, but I've come around.

Caligula is the album that has most sharply divided opinion in my household for a while. (I love it; tt...certainly doesn't)

Three more from based Iceland.

I already mentioned Andvaka: funeral doom with a forceful hymnic bent that recalls Sigur Rós ca. ( ), led by a voice far graver than Jónsi's (start with track 2).

https://andvaka.bandcamp.com/album/andvana

Similarly named (say my mainlander's ears), depressive black metal purveyors Andavald, a musical rendering of Beckett's 'I can't go on, I'll go on'.

https://andavald.bandcamp.com/album/undir-skygg-arhaldi

And of course, Misþyrming, which stands firmly atop last year's pile of meloblack with their infinity riffs and unyielding songwriting.

https://misthyrming.bandcamp.com/album/algleymi

pomenitul, Friday, 10 January 2020 20:40 (four years ago) link

Xp Haha pomenitul I'll be honest, I suspect FPA not trvth enough to make your ballot but it's a pretty wild listen nonetheless

I still haven't checked out the last Misþyrming record tbh, but I'm pretty I'd need to be made of sterner stuff in order to pass up the tantalizing proposition of ☆infinity riffs☆

PLEB AF (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 January 2020 20:58 (four years ago) link

FPA are fellow Montrealers that have been around for a long time and that I've somehow managed never to hear for no particular reason, so I'd say now's as good a time as any to make up for that.

pomenitul, Friday, 10 January 2020 21:09 (four years ago) link

Always loved them but the new album is defo blackgaze but also very good as they put their own spin on it. I do recommend it to those reading who aren't tr00 kvlt bores

Dog Is Daed (Oor Neechy), Friday, 10 January 2020 21:40 (four years ago) link

Thanks for the recs Pom, it's a dreadfully dark and pissy rainy day to dig into them later!

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 12 January 2020 11:17 (four years ago) link

Just listening to that Misþyrming album and wow they really, really really like Mgla.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

Listened to it a second time, man that’s shameless. Whoever was representing the Marvin Gaye estate can probably expect a phone call from Poland.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

Algleymi features more 'progressive' touches than the classic & to my ears more minimalistic Mgła sound.

pomenitul, Monday, 13 January 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link

I can see they try to embellish things a bit with different melodies and some fancy synth interludes but their main groove is *so* similar, the vocals both in sound and cadence, the drums, the song structures...I mean these guys are good at what they do, it's undoubtedly a good record and right up my alley in principle but I'm not sure I can get fully on board here.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

Algleymi features more 'progressive' touches than the classic & to my ears more minimalistic Mgła sound.

Certainly, no one could accuse Mgla of being progressive.

Bstep, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:51 (four years ago) link

I can hear where you're coming from, Siegbran, but I do think there's enough variation in terms of structure and atmosphere to impel a distinct effect. Incidentally, as much as I enjoy Age of Excuse, Algleymi tops it in my book, in no small part due to its epic aspirations and more open-ended songwriting.

I just wanted to remind everybody about the great Vastum album, "Orificial Purge", which I listened to way more than the Tomb Mold album (not that it has to be either/or). The intro to the title track is just beastly. I cannot listen to it without at least slightly head banging.

An album discovered fairly recently - maybe through this thread - is Immortal Bird's Thrive on Neglect. Stand out track for me is Avolition. Another nice discovery is that Jute Gyte finally released something that clicked with me this year, though I don't know if it will make my ballot. That nominations list is intimidating. I feel like with a few exceptions my ballot is going to be almost identical to my nominations.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 17:43 (four years ago) link

I meant to extend the "slightly head banging" thought, which as written reads like some extremely faint praise, to make it clear that it causes me to do so in inappropriate public places, such as my place of work, the gym, public transportation, etc.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 17:50 (four years ago) link

There could be a good 'which tracks make you spontaneously head bang' thread! For me, the two that spring straight to mind are Sinners Bleed and Raining Blood.

Cosign on the Vastum, one of my favorite death metal albums of 2019, along with Imprecation and Coffin Rot.

From the province that turned the word 'tabernacle' into a slur, I give you… Ossuaire, who put out an impressive diptych of albums last year. The first, Premiers chants is very much worth your time, but the second, aptly-named Derniers chants is where it's at:

https://ossuaire.bandcamp.com/album/derniers-chants

This is anti-Catholic melodic atmoblack haunted by the troubadours of yore and which does very little to expand the (primarily francophone) subgenre. Not that it matters: Ossuaire achieves exactly what it sets out to do, thanks in no small part to its superlative songwriting.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 January 2020 11:16 (four years ago) link

Speaking of medieval-esque BM gestures, Obsequiae's The Palms of Sorrowed Kings is absolutely glorious, although I doubt it'll need my help to place.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 January 2020 11:18 (four years ago) link

A few more that don't need my laurels to place but that will undoubtedly be on my ballot:

Big Brave – A Gaze Among Them
Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear
Mgła – Age of Excuse
Sunn O))) – Life Metal
Tomb Mold – Planetary Clairvoyance

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 January 2020 11:46 (four years ago) link

I quite enjoyed that album, but Big Brave's dronier tempos and Robin Wattie's voice give them a clear edge imho.

Dog Is Daed (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 19 January 2020 00:33 (four years ago) link

That Tomb Mold is so great. Sci-fi death needs more participants.

The riffs might feel non-descript at first but on closer listens it's dragging you into a interplanetary dystopia.

I met one of the guitarists after his set at PSV. He blushed when i complimented his performance and i watched Carcass with him later. Super non-pretentious kids that just love metal. The frontman had a Star Trek shirt on.

papa stank (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 January 2020 00:41 (four years ago) link

Ashes - Ashes (if you like Burzum, but not made by Burzum)
Bölzer - Lese Majesty (after the super disappointing Hero this is really good again)
Kampfar - Ofidians Manifest (excellent melodic BM with great varied vocals)
Kwade Droes - Onder De Toren (somewhere between Lugubrum and Urfaust)
Mayhem - Daemon (so much better than a 2019 Mayhem album should be)
Pensées Nocturnes - Grand Guignol Orchestra (jazz/dark cabaret/circus music/metal, I'm still undecided if this is actually good or if I'm just trying too hard, but it's definitely something)
Xentrix - Bury The Pain (so these guys were Metallica copycats back in the day, they reform, and basically engage in some fan fiction "what if Metallica was still in the Puppets era and Hetfield didn't develop that -ah vocal tick")
Goatpenis/Defectrator - Bloodpact In Cataclysmic Warfare (you know you want it)

Voted - It's truly a year where, for me anyways, a lot of good metal records missed the top 50 cut - the ones bubbling under that number, for me, are awesome, too.

So what the heck - campaigning for my missed cuts:

Vircolac - Masque
The Great Old Ones - Cosmicism
Nightfell - A Sanity Deranged
Liturgy - H.A.Q.Q.
Imprecation - Damnatio Ad Bestias
Weeping Sores - False Confession
Helium Horse Fly - Hollowed
Pulchra Morte - Divina Autem et Aniles
Lunar Shadow - The Smokeless Fires
Ataraxie - Résignés
Maestus - Deliquesce
Ares Kingdom - By the Light of Their Destruction
Unfathomable Ruination - Enraged & Unbound

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 24 January 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

My record that climbed highest for me each time I listened to it, this year, and what I played while voting was 'Ceremony of Silence - Oútis' - really great riffs and atmosphere - if ya haven't heard it - try it!

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 24 January 2020 22:21 (four years ago) link

I got the previous Amygdala album in the mail yesterday, and it also shreds. They still have copies of the second pressing available, and they threw in a free split 7" with Saligia for my troubles. Highly recommended.

I also finally got to listening to All Bitches Die, and honestly Caligula blows it away. Nuance, feeling, musicality, I'm not sure what it is, but Caligula makes ABD sound like a b&w photocopy.

The Liturgy album is good too. Black metal, glitch, blues harmonica, ondes martenot, it's all here, man.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 18:37 (four years ago) link

Okay, apparently no ondes martenot or harmonica (unless they call it 'harp' consistently in the album credits), but there's a lot of sound here and it's hard to keep it all straight.

I'm up to the Big|Brave album now, and I can't believe I skipped seeing them coming through Boston at least four times since 2015. Also the black/black cover of Ardor looks familiar, I could swear I saw someone selling it at a merch booth in Manchester NH but they've never played here, so it must just be a design similarity.

I think I actively dislike Astronoid.

Big Brave fucking rules and I'll impale anyone who says otherwise

Kostnatění are my pick for 2019 BM dissonance, over and above the latest Deathspell Omega.

As for Caligula, it's one of my AOTY, but I couldn't in good conscience vote for it in this poll, for am I the anti-paladin of Tr0o m3t4L.

pomenitul, in your opinion as an indefatigable metal purist, is Motorpsycho metal? I just listened to and loved The Crucible but it seemed a little too pure prog-rock to count. I may end up voting for it anyway because it was really enjoyable and deserves attention.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Sunday, 26 January 2020 20:32 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't call myself a purist, I just distinguish between successful and unsuccessful or merely intriguing experiments. I get most of my avant kicks from contemporary classical music so that may have something to do with it. Besides, quite a few of my all-time favourite metal albums (Negură Bunget's OM, Gorguts's Obscura, Agalloch's Ashes Against the Grain) can easily be construed as untrve. I'm also not big on thrash, so I definitely lack the credentials to be a gatekeeper!

Anyway, Motorpsycho is heavy enough to qualify imo, especially when they're riffing on Sabbath.

I guess I can see how Caligula isn't "metal" or "heavy rock", but it seems a shame that it isn't included here. Maybe in the future we can just call it a "heavy music" poll or something. I weighed it pretty high on the main poll so maybe I'll skip it here, too, though i doubt it will place there.

I'm sad to see two albums that I just recently discovered weren't nominated: TORPOR's "Rhetoric of the Image", and Vanum's Ageless Fire.

UNLESS you cant cut your shortlist down to the limit and its near the bottom of your list.

but please no its not metal enough BS. It wasn't vetoed during noms.

Anyways, I'm going to confess unlimited wrongness and throw myself upon the mercy of the pollrunners and humbly request that these two albums which I didn't in fact hear in time but am asking now that they be added to the nominations list this late in the game:

Wyrmwoods - Spirit and Teeth
Pharaoh Overlord - 5

Btw Witch Trail stans should post about their love for that album itt. I'll listen to it later today.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 3 February 2020 12:03 (four years ago) link

I only ask because I do objectively think these are two of the finest metal albums to be released in the past year. The Wyrmwoods especially is a fine slab of that experimental BM syncretism that we all know & love around here, this time fusing it with Berlin School type synth kosmiche and ambient. The first track is downright batshit. imago & it, take note:

https://youtu.be/OCBoamIzK88

The extreme, nonsensical compression is the point: the next track clicks in at precisely four minutes--exactly twice the farmer's length-- and the track after that, 16 mins, w/ the last one at 32

Almost done with the preliminary ballot. Will post when I vote for sure and probably to campaign for things...

The Obsequiae album is pretty great! And Lord Weird Slough Feg! And give the Candlemass album a chance, I think it's their best in over a decade tbh.

Frobisher, Saturday, 8 February 2020 04:46 (four years ago) link

I liked the Esoteric, surprisingly since I usually think the doom metal albums with the organs are goofy. As usual, I don't see the appeal of Obsequiae or Schammasch, despite many others really enjoying them.

It didn't make my ballot, but I'll point out the Ausmuteants "album," a 20 minute group of punk songs sung from the point of view of a cop, but written by crusty anarchists. Absolutely hilarious.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 10 February 2020 12:28 (four years ago) link

There are a couple albums I like but aren't voting for, because I don't consider them metal enough, though. Fly Pan Am and Blanck Mass. I don't begrudge anyone voting for them, they are good albums, but I'm having more fun creating a list without them.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:28 (four years ago) link

Blanck Mass might not be 'metal' as such but I have no problems classing it as 'industrial' and valid for this poll. Not sure if I actually like it enough to place it high tho.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:31 (four years ago) link

I did hesitate when finishing my ballot, as my picks are unlikely to surprise. The hesitation didn't last long though: this poll and the nomination process made for some excellent catching-up listening during xmas and after, and I can truthfully say I like to love all 25 albums I listed. I'll send it in this week.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:38 (four years ago) link

I have no problem thinking of them as valid. They were on my first version of the list. But half the fun for me is digging into what it is I really value in metal records, and Blanck Mass belongs to a genre I listen to for other things. Cattle Decapitation, great use of climate change monologues, trve metal.

Mildly lo-fi atmoblack from Switzerland with a gaze-esque melodic streak, the occasional Gregorian chant and non-clean female vocals. Superb stuff – I very much look to their next album, which will be out in April.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 13:49 (four years ago) link

It probably won't appeal to many but Wigrid sits halfway between Amesoeurs and Burzum, the old hypnotic "ten minutes, two riffs, one tempo, no frills" formula. Catnip for me.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 13:56 (four years ago) link

As an aside, is it just me or is there a tacit America vs Europe taste divide on ILM? I tend to gravitate towards European acts more readily, whereas others are seemingly more intent on American ones.

Based on my provisional ballot, 15 out of 50 bands are from the US. I'm curious to see which way this skews for everyone else.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 14:24 (four years ago) link

I think Americans seem to prefer death metal and Europeans prefer black metal but as always there's exceptions.

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 14:28 (four years ago) link

That's my impression as well. If memory serves, unperson doesn't listen to BM at all (partly because of the politics). Are there any ILM BM-heads who avoid DM altogether?

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 14:33 (four years ago) link

I think metal's center of gravity always has been European except for a fairly brief period in the mid/late 80s (thrash/early death)?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 14:36 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't consider myself a BM-head, but I got into the genre via blackgaze, and there's never been anything similar with DM? I've liked a lot of albums categorised as DM this year though, Blood Incantation, Tomb Mold, Wormed.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

It took me a while to warm up to DM as well, but I'm now at a point where I'd rate my preferences as 55 BM/45 DM or something like that.

Are there any ILM BM-heads who avoid DM altogether?

― toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, February 11, 2020 3:33 PM (five hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

That would be me. DM's hardly ever done anything for me. There's a certain melodic element to it that I really dislike; or rather, I regard it as something that doesn't befit what I want from my metal (pitch-black, drony and/or hazy, nihil nihil nihil). Occasionally I do try it again, like with Blood Inc, but it's just not for me. Black metal is more or less the only metal for me.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

I came to metal via BM and for a long time I had zero interest for DM. Then I discovered a handful of exceptions (bands like Immolation, Gorguts etc.) but BM is still my favorite. Doom is fine too. Like LBV, I'm here for the bleakness.

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

And speaking of BM, Deathspell Omega wasn't nominated but I still intend to vote for it as it's my favorite metal album this year.

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:55 (four years ago) link

Not a DM fan either though I do like some of the earlier classics. Cant stand most of the vox though.

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:57 (four years ago) link

That's one of my main issues, too, the vocals.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:58 (four years ago) link

Aye, the cookie monster vocals spoil the music which is quite often fine.

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:59 (four years ago) link

I can also understand why DM fans hate BM vocals. Its just a preference innit

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:00 (four years ago) link

I like funeral doom which isnt quite cookie vox some doom-death is and some are tolerable.

Doom-death ok death-doom not ok, lol

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

I definitely relate to your reservations about DM. Fwiw Gorguts's Obscura is what made it click for me. Cavernous vox are what draws me in the most, as well as, say, Tomas Lindberg on At the Gates's first two LPs – a thespian of pure despair.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

Getting into DM (incl vocals) was relativey easy if you came from thrash/speed metal, the step from Sodom/Celtic Frost to Obituary/Death wasn’t huge.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

Something about the cadence of most thrash vocalists really turns me off – maybe because of the punk influence? It never feels loose and intense enough (Tom Warrior excepted, among others).

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

Never cared much for thrash. Celtic Frost covered so much ground and excelled at it so much that you couldn't help but love them.

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:38 (four years ago) link

My entry into death metal was via Slayer and Sepultura. I remember it scaring me a bit (particularly the first Paradise Lost album, for some reason) but I kept coming back. BM came much later for me - probably not until the late-90s.

Ngolo Cantwell (Chinaski), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:43 (four years ago) link

I'm much more of a DM than BM fan. I listened to a bit of metal in my formative listening years, I owned Master of Puppets on CD for instance, but when grunge became popular that pretty much scratched the itch for me without the embarrassing associations, imagery, bad hairstyles, etc. So during most of the '90s I didn't listen to much metal, though I did listen to a fair amount of heavy indie rock, Japanoise, etc. I think the first metal album I bought in the 2000s was Opeth. That turned out to be a good gateway drug to the DM style of vocals.

I like this Sordide album but it's a bit awkward and patchy. It doesn't quite measure up to Fuir la lumière. Nonetheless, they very well might be the best RABM band

That was my feeling as well, except I haven't heard Fuir la lumière.

A little last minute campaigning for Imprecation, which doesn't seem to get as much love as it should. If you have a taste for the slower end of old-school death metal, this is one worth checking out. This is a difficult style to pull off, you can't hide behind a blitzkrieg of riffs or pure speed. The songs have got to be there. Recommended for fans of Autopsy, Convulse, Asphyx, Disma, Serpentine Path.

o. nate, Saturday, 15 February 2020 02:55 (four years ago) link

Never got a chance to chime in on the DM vs BM thing because I was too busy, but I'm firmly in the DM camp. Came to it by way of thrash in the late 80s. Like many things I love, it did sort of unsettle or disturb me at first in kind of a: "Jesus... what kind of person makes music like this?" None of my friends were into it and it was kind of a personal shame that I listened to on headphones in private. I lived in TX at the time and they had this awesome radio show on Tuesday mornings on the public radio station - from like 1am - 5am. The knuckleheads who DJ'd that show framed the music well. This fondness for the relentless brutality, but also an appreciation for the comedy of it. I used to listen as much as I could, armed with blank tapes (of which I made many). I loved the Florida bands (First few Morbid Angel albums were huge favorites for years), was big into the European stuff on Earache, as well as the low budget local stuff that sounded the most demented: Muddy tape recordings of unhinged guys in a dank basement screaming/growling over indecipherable down-tuned guitars and drums that sounded like someone was banging on cardboard boxes at breakneck speeds with spatulas. Always an appreciation for the absurdity of it. But, it was the 80s, too, so the blatant satanism was still a bit shocking for a time when the PMRC was still going after guys like Alice Cooper and Ozzy.

I got bored of it in the 90s with so many new styles of music to explore. Every couple of years I'd go through a metal phase, but I think I'm a bigger metal fan now than I have been. I like a fair share of sludge, doom, and black metal, but a good DM album blows everything away. Probably my favorite albums of the last decade are Immolation's "Atonement", Gorguts' "Colored Sands", and Ulcerate's "Destroyers of All". I also love that strain of black metal with a hardcore influence; Castevet's "Obsian" one of my favorites of the decade.

beard papa, Saturday, 15 February 2020 06:15 (four years ago) link

As a BM guy, I love these three albums you mentioned. I was thinking about this DM/BM thing again yesterday while listening to the new Tomb Mold and came to two conclusions: I like the kind of DM that is best listened via headphones, and most of my favorite DM albums would probably be even better if the cookie monster vocals were replaced by maniacal high-pitched screaming.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 15 February 2020 07:01 (four years ago) link

As far as DM goes, I prefer the more human-sounding enraged roar over the more theatrical lower-pitched "demon" style. I really like the guy from Ulcerate (Paul Kallend). Though I prefer that style to pretty much any metal vocal style, I do think that BM vocals are more interesting as a whole; there's a lot more variety of styles in BM, and that BM leaves more opportunity for female vocalists as well. One of my all time favorite BM vocalists is Laurie Sue Shanaman. I also love Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice's vocals, and Mick Barr is pretty great - almost that death metal-esque roar at times. Would be fun to do a S&D thread or poll just on BM vocals.

for real tho. best DM album of 2019 by far in my opinion.

Bstep, Saturday, 15 February 2020 07:54 (four years ago) link

This is going to sound completely idiotic but for me the coolest thing about Tomb Mold imo is the vox; singer manages to conform his voice to the exact timbre of a heavy cement lid scraping across a coffin. imo they're one of the latest in a long tradition throughout r'n'r history of great bands that are just perfectly named (like, say, Talking Heads , for instance)

Being Canadian they should know better than to omit the 'u', but I forgive them because two four-letter words in a row are inarguably more badass.

Anyone else here fucking with Jorge Elbrecht's Coral Cross project? I know tangenttangent at least (& LJ too?)(happy birthday btw) got some mileage from the also-great Gloss Coma album he released this year, but Coral Cross is special: another strand of that experimental BM syncretism I was talking about a while ago, but Elbrecht pairs his black metal with spectral keyboards, chanting vox, eerie sound efx, & even some influence from John Carpenter's soundtracks. The resultant hybrid sounds goth af:

A late recommendation but I just discovered it in bouncing around listening to things, Chevelier - Destiny Calls is really good, or at least really interesting. It's I guess ostensibly some kind of nwobhm-revival sort of stuff, but it's very sparse and weird, and has female-fronted vocals that really do sound like some high priestess shouting incantations. I'm having trouble pinning it down, but it's not run of the mill its very strange and wonderful to me. Worth checking out!

a few reminders for anyone still making a ballot:

XOTH: insanely fun sci-fi death metal with a perfect balance of goofiness and serious chops
HAUNTER: kitchen sink black-death-whatever with a ton of incredible ornamental flourishes
WEEPING SORES: Stunning violin-aided techy death-doom ft Doug Moore of Pyrrhon
WORMED: the best grindcore(?) band on the planet
NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE DEAD THINK: the best grindcore band on the planet
FALLS OF RAUROS: Of all the bands doing the "wintry sweeping melodic BM you would listen to on a trek through the woods" thing, FOR do it best

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 21 February 2020 20:06 (four years ago) link

^ Seconding those Xoth and NOKWtDT takes. I did not know Falls of Rauros had released a new album in 2019!

If you only have space in your ballot for one more tragically beautiful sun-drenched blackgaze album, make it 'Circle of Veins' by Sadness. At the very least, skip ahead to 'Cerrien' and weep.

tangenttangent, Friday, 21 February 2020 20:19 (four years ago) link

FoR are seriously under-known/promoted considering how great they are.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 21 February 2020 20:21 (four years ago) link

I like that Cloud Rat and Monolord both had a song called 'Last Leaf' last year

tangenttangent, Friday, 21 February 2020 20:38 (four years ago) link

speaking of, this cloud rat record is a... masterpiece?

i liked it before but it's really hitting me today

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 February 2020 21:07 (four years ago) link

it is obviously a huge step up from qliphoth which i thought was incredible

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 February 2020 21:08 (four years ago) link

I preferred qliphoth for its greater ratio of dreamy moments, but still think Pollinator is brilliant.

Much as I adore the PUP and Microwave albums, I cannot vote for them in good conscience in this poll.

tangenttangent, Friday, 21 February 2020 21:19 (four years ago) link

Oor Neechy / pomenitul - very sorry - I re-submitted - Imprecation and Xoth had just been getting so many spins lately, I couldn't NOT re-submit! Hope that's cool.

Lol Brad I fuckin love oozing wound and almost listed them upthread

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 21 February 2020 22:33 (four years ago) link

Sadly there's a lot less interest in the poll now.

xp

Oor Neechy, Friday, 21 February 2020 22:34 (four years ago) link

Not that surprising considering how heavy and/or dark music did in the main polls. I expect Lingua Ignota and Liturgy to do well. I'm fine with the smaller number, though in a way I think the sheer amount of nominations dilutes the end result a little bit.

beard papa, Friday, 21 February 2020 23:14 (four years ago) link

Submitted my weighted ballot of 50! It's not the most perfect order, but it will do. This poll always makes me wonder why I'm not listening to metal constantly.

tangenttangent, Friday, 21 February 2020 23:18 (four years ago) link

tt has gotten 90 down to 50. I have gotten 16 up to 21 with some last-minute scrambling. A couple of things have been given a lot of points based on a very brief impression. Let's hope the whole Ifernach and Akasha records are as kickass as my brief impressions make them out to be...

imago, Friday, 21 February 2020 23:21 (four years ago) link

Lingua might just top this sucker.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 21 February 2020 23:47 (four years ago) link

yes, and i reckon my top 5 will all make the top 10

imago, Saturday, 22 February 2020 00:06 (four years ago) link

Anyone else planning to vote?

As long at the voting form is open you can still vote. I think seandalai will post here when he's closing it so post in here if you intend to vote.

You will have another 8 or 9 hours to vote for sure.

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 22 February 2020 00:07 (four years ago) link

Still working out my ballot, thanks!

Just finished Ausmuteants--instantly a total classic--and now listening to Car Bomb, which is a bit more traditional than I'd hoped but there seems to be a lot of interesting passages for one to trip over :D

hooper (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 22 February 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link

I think it will be a shame if nobody else has voted for the best Boris album in a decade.

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 22 February 2020 00:54 (four years ago) link

Voted but my ballot was slim. Metal just wasn't my focus last year.

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 February 2020 00:57 (four years ago) link

Seems to be a common theme this/these past year(s) :(

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 22 February 2020 01:02 (four years ago) link

I will def vote for that Boris album

hooper (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 22 February 2020 01:05 (four years ago) link

Finding seven albums I thoroughly enjoy in one genre in one year doesn't seem that bad to me, honestly.

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 February 2020 07:58 (four years ago) link

Deadline still not quite here! Hope you managed to scrape together a ballot of your favourites

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 February 2020 16:18 (four years ago) link

i've said that before but it was worth saying again

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 February 2020 16:18 (four years ago) link

Voting still open if anyone wants to avoid the "oh I didn't know this poll was happening" dog latin type post

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 22 February 2020 17:12 (four years ago) link

VOTING IS CLOSED.
