That said, he was always on my side when I vociferously demanded we treat techno and house as originating in the Black and queer communities.

Well, she is Polish and from Chicago, right? The most famous of Black Madonnas is in Czestochowa, PL, so I can sort of see her using that name as she was coming up and it becoming more problematic as her star rose.

there's definitely bobbinsy stuff that irritates me, i get irritated by boring music. literally everything anyone posts to these threads i enjoy on some level though. the really bad boring stuff i only hear from a few local djs who think they are really hot shit. where and how do they find such crappy music? mysteries abound.

I have become allergic to a lot of the more plinky minimal stuff, and certain strains of big room techno just turn me off. I'm really into electro right now, though, so that might just be where my ears are at.

Just want to say that I'm in favor of people not liking things and saying so. Also it's funny to think that a few years ago I would have been laughing at the narcissism of small differences between music that all has the same beat (more or less) and is made out of short loops, but of course that's reductive. And even though I'm still not a big techno/house head, I have a lot more appreciation for the large effects that small differences can have. And if your track is a one bar loop, it's way harder than it looks to find the one bar loop that doesn't get boring or annoying over the course of 4 - 8 min.

I agree with most of the post, tlg. I now mostly resist making negative comments apart from when you really feel the urge to make a particular point. I'd criticise someone's opinion on a movie or book more readily but I'd still be reluctant to do so about something someone liked a lot but then again sometimes you've watched Midsommar and you really need to say something.

As for that track that caused the kerfuffle, I did go back and listen to it again, on my studio monitors. I still think the sample is wildly irritating, but the peak of distorted madness is kind of nice...I just don't like the rest of the track, which relies on an uncomplicated beat, little in terms of secondary rhythmic structures, and a vocal sample. It just doesn't move me at the moment, whereas the Sansibar track I posted above it is really where I'm at... Listening to a lot of electro these days!

I like descriptions of texture, vibe, and what kind of scene a techno/house/etc track might fit into and possibly a “TIP!” if it’s especially good

dance music is interesting in, like other types of sounds that might be more tracky than songy, there’s a place for standalone songs, dj tools, peak hour intensity, weird experiments

It honestly sounds like being inside the engine hall at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum when all of the Beam Engines are in steam, and pounding away, the WHOMP of the beam that shakes the whole hall, the WHOOSH! of the pistons, the chattering of the pumps or the bobbins or whatever the individual engine is powering. It is the most machine-like thing I have ever heard outside of YouTube videos of "Germany's Most Giant Engines" and it is total audio stim and I want more.

idk of much that sounds like that specific bizarre sound, but i think of that track as catering to djs like cera khin, VTSS, mama snake, etc that are playing high bpm 90s rave sounds and are back into playing trance and gabba (i believe nina kravis has also been playing stuff like this though i haven't heard a set of hers in a long time.) peder mannerfelt comes from a pretty leftfield POV so the straight-ahead banger vibe of this track is not necessarily typical of him.

What really appealed was the relentless, one-tone no-melody machine element as much as the cheesy raveness. (Tho I am a fan of obnoxious rave, to be sure.)

But I checked out another of Peder's tracks through YouTube reccommendations, called 'Peder Mannerfelt - Psalm And Songs And Voices' and even though it had a completely different vibe (not a banger at all, far more slithery and infernal) it had the same no-melody relentlessness to it, so perhaps I should just explore further into his work.

and just a note about the conversation above: I don't particularly like Marc Houle, was just bringing him up as an example. I do think that the "noisy" aspects of his sound, particularly evidenced on records like Drift, were a little more interesting to me from a compositional standpoint... but a lot of his dancefloor singles have always sounded like shit to me.

In this case, I honestly love a lot of what Mamasnake and similar DJs do in their sets— I adore a lot of gabba and hard trance, for example. the electro revival is hit-or-miss for me, when it's done right I'm really into it but when it's not I find the sterility really alienating. It's weird because with other dance music forms like minimal or purist deep house I can find myself really enjoying it or just comfortable with its pleasantness even if it's not inspiring to me, but bad electro makes me react a bit harshly.

See for me, a lot of the purist deep house stuff strikes me as so lacking in any sort of soul that I become upset.
