don't want to pollute the thread with embeds, but here are the covers i voted for. all of the covers i chose are songs i didn't wind up picking for the tracks ballot

rotary connection - 'burning of the midnight lamp': https://youtu.be/NSvgdzgDxSA
grand and operatic with gorgeous vocals from minnie riperton, breathes new vital life into hendrix's hippy-dippiest track.

rickie lee jones - 'up from the skies': https://youtu.be/kRNcdgszivI
just a really good matchup between song and artist. rickie has a lot of fun with the groovy lyrics.

living colour - crosstown traffic: https://youtu.be/9so3U_27tVo
a faithful cover that i voted for because crosstown traffic was my final cut from the main poll and i wanted to honor it lol. didn't vote for best new hendrix, but vernon reid is as good a pick as any.

I was one of the Scannell voters, I do like the regular version of it as well - I had the CD with the purple cover at the top there, that really is some terrible '90s CD art!

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:16 (five years ago)

i voted for the three studio albs in reverse chronological order.

he was only getting better :(

edgard varese-type beat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:24 (five years ago)

I had AYE at #2 over EL on my ballot but on reflection I think the latter edges it, especially if you go by the original tracklisting (I've only ever owned versions of the debut with the early single A and B sides tacked on the end). Electric Ladyland really is one of the all-time great double albums.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:29 (five years ago)

Sides 3 and 4 of Electric Ladyland are the pinnacle of rock

Joey Corona (Euler), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:05 (five years ago)

Electric Ladyland drives me crazy. I think the backing vocals around 2:25 of Long Hot Summer Night are my least favorite thing Jimi put on tape.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:21 (five years ago)

'Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)' is 'What'd I Say'. 'Burning of the Midnight Lamp' is 'Come as You Are' slowed down with wah wah. I don't know how Jimi stole it from the future.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:35 (five years ago)

Ladyland is killer start to finish

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:37 (five years ago)

come on let the good times roll is one of his very best solos, the moment where it kicks into high gear after shifting up a half step is rock city.

burning of the midnight lamp is fine, but better as a rotary connection song lol

Being into a Hendrix poll and not being into Electric Ladyland is befuddling. I took House Burning Down off my ballot at the last minute and now regret it just thinking about it.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

Yeah totally
like, dig:
the first 2 albums are like the thrilling countdown to blastoff & Ladyland is the moment when the rocket takes off

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:15 (five years ago)

let’s all say “dig” a lot in this rollout

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:16 (five years ago)

i rate the 3 studio albums chronologically, but had Band of Gypsys #1. I think my love for jimi is rooted in what sounds great on guitar in a 3-piece. EL has great moments but is a departure from that and sounds a little too loose overall for me. For example, 'All Along the Watchtower' has great guitar moments, but it sounds more like a santana song, and you can't, in my experience, have as much fun playing it alone on guitar in your bedroom. that last bit is probably the unfair bias i bring to this poll.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:31 (five years ago)

Not so great to use 'great' over and over in that post, but i'm fuckin wired on iced tea and listening to EL all the way through.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:40 (five years ago)

Speaking of Santana, I was just thinking today about much it sucks that Hendrix had to die, robbing us of a collab live album of him, Santana, and Buddy Miles jamming on a volcano in Hawaii.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 00:28 (five years ago)

we got the santana + rob thomas collabo we all desired, but it only made us hunger more for the hendrix + sugar ray collabo that can never happen.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 02:05 (five years ago)

so help me i will turn this car around

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 02:11 (five years ago)

like I’m guessing “Still Raining, Still Dreaming” doesn’t make the poll, but in context it’s the glue between the astronomical wilds of Side 3 and the earthly doom of Side 4, with God’s wrath finally severing the two in a slight return. That solo! Blues as inner space.

Joey Corona (Euler), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 04:25 (five years ago)

I voted for it. No one does laid back off-handedness like Jimi. One of my favorite Jimi modes.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 11:41 (five years ago)

I listened to Electric Ladyland again with fresh ears this morning. Also switched from headphones to very loud speakers, and I enjoyed it to an extent I haven't before. I don't have it on vinyl, and I can see how the experience benefits from division into 4 sides, so thanks for that lens. I've always loved voodo child (slight return) and Gypsy Eyes -- those tracks stand out on a compilation. But the rest of em, including Watchtower, gain something from the album context. anyway, I appreciate that I have another Jimi album to love. I was wrong about it before. Sometimes you need fresh excitement, especially when you weren't around for the original releases, to give you the juice to take on a whole album alone. I could see EL taking over Axis eventually because the overall vibe is cooler. Still don't expect I'll ever enjoy it more than AYE? or BoG, though.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 17:23 (five years ago)

EL is a great early-stereo headphones album, some really cool panning that makes it feel like the solos are bouncing around your brain.

EL was my second choice. I love it, but AYE? made a bigger impression on me when I heard it at home as a child, and it's the one I've returned to most often. On the surface AYE? is a typical 1967 pop album with 11 short songs (the longest is 3:55!), but every track is so freaky and wtf-sounding. I'm glad he stretched out later (my #1 track is a long one from EL) but I love the speed and power of the debut, and it's fun to think about how it must have blown people's minds. The Doors' debut, Surrealistic Pillow, and Electric Music for the Mind and Body came out a little earlier, but as psychedelia they all pale in comparison to AYE?.

It's on the consolidated CD version, which I'm using in those cases because otherwise my head hurts.

'Stone Free' is so good. Gavin, Leeds otm about the verse sound.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 22:01 (five years ago)

the bends in the highway chile open/chorus feel seminal. 'Love Or Confusion' was a late cut on my ballot, which i regret listening to it now. opens with a pinky volume swell, percussive pickup switching, treble jangle, and then sustained feedback. the kind of shit that blows a kid's mind.

"Who Knows" was my #1. impeccable groove. hit that fucking snare and get us going, Buddy. we're lookin for a our sally. four face melting and groovin solos on BoG. i'm talkin bout my baby. this song fucking rips. oh yeah and buddy scats for 2 whole minutes near the middle. i don't care too much for that, but a few 'arit dit dit dit dooos' cannot ruin the party. i'm even kind of enjoying them at that point in the album.

hey, if you're cool with buddy that's ok! if you're being true to yourself you don't need to justify yourself to me or anyone else, either with 4d chess or bagging on "crosstown traffic" or anything else!

the academic paper on the star spangled banner/"this is america" (quick shout-out to donald glover, who probably wasn't making a deliberate reference) was really interesting and helped me understand more about just how many changes jimi went through in his career. in '66 he was a hawk on vietnam! hendrix by '70, when he was doing "freedom", was about as far from a republican as, say, "born in the usa" is, which is to say very far indeed.

This an element of what I meant above about laid back Jimi being one of my favorite Jimi modes. Just that confidence in his timing to ad lib like this and have it not kill the flow of the song but actually toy with the flow of the song. *Swoon*

Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is a good time to point out something that I noticed in listening to all this Hendrix for the poll: he has some of the best sequencing of his studio albums ever, especially EL. The way that HYEB(TEL) is such a soft, warm, welcome landing pad after the chaos of . . . And The Gods Made Love, then the blast of Crosstown Traffic. The whole album has amazing transitions.

Didn’t vote in this but if I had managed to put together a tracks ballot, one of the live versions of Red House would probably have been my #1. It made me completely re-think my perspective of the 12 bar blues.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 April 2020 21:07 (five years ago)

I voted for the Winterland “Wild Thing” because a buddy and I in hs made an air guitar video to it where I played Jimi and picked me up like Ozzy did Randy Rhoads and it ruled. We turned it in as a school assignment and the teacher thought it was gross. RIP

My oldest sister bought The Ultimate Experience because of Wayne's World. Foxy Lady and Garth are inseparable in my mind, so I couldn't vote for it. But it's responsible for my first exposure to a small bit of the hendrix catalog.

May This Be Love was my #8. I had to have heard it before, but I most remember it being on the Soundtrack to the Movie "Singles".

I love those pastoral Hendrix numbers.

I voted for the one of the trio of hits off the first album that hasn't shown up yet. I expect it will be top 10 unless ILX is going to ILX.

Crosstown Traffic is the apotheosis of the entire British Invasion. The rushed, jagged vocal attack on the verses when the guitar pulls back for space, then during the chorus, the way the "It's just like", "CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC", and "to get through to you" combine gets me every time.

re: Gods, I'm voting for this version (repost from voting thread):

When I was 19 I dropped acid for the first time and while waiting for it to kick in drank Bacardi Golden Reserve and smoked pot. About 4 hours in as things were really humming along, I went for a quick ride with a friend, who popped a cassette in. The most incredibly weird music with spooky voices started to assault me from the speakers. I asked my fiend who this was and he told me it was "Whole Lotta Love", but it didn't sound like that to me. After listening further I started to become concerned and told myself, "concentrate, and when you listen again, it will be 'Whole Lotta Love'". Nope! By this point I thought I had done something very bad to my brain. I (desperately) asked my friend again who it was. Anyway, this is the story of why ". . . And the Gods Made Love" will be very high on my ballot.

I know there was stuff like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Eight Miles High" out there already, but the opening of "Purple Haze" really feels like the "We're Not In Kansas Anymore..." of Psych.

This = the surprise, but not the track I thought! I didn't vote for it, but I love it! Three #1!!!s

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:48 (five years ago)

I’ve forgotten what the OG “Sway” is now 😆.

Anyway 1983/Moon would have been high on my ballot if I’d voted.

they also threw this in my face

edgard varese-type beat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

Re: Purple Haze - to me the most sonically audacious of the big songs off the first album. So big and beefy. You would probably have gotten to metal anyways, but this song definitely pointed the way more than any other I can think of that music could be that heavy.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 19:53 (five years ago)

1983 was #3 on my ballot but on some days it could be #1. Electric Ladyland was the first Hendrix I head beyond the hits and I just wasn't expecting something like this at all.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:04 (five years ago)

1983 was my #13. i love it more in theory than in practice. loses the plot towards the end, imo; too much psychedelic horseshit (and i _like_ psychedelic horseshit). somewhere in my head there's a version of "1983" that's truly transcendent, "mysterium" in full rather than just an unfinished prelude.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:22 (five years ago)

Too Low! My #1.

Opening riff signals danger like the rattle from a snake. There is a reason it soundtracks every 1960s based movie. It IS the 1960s and it cannot be overplayed or fucked with.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:25 (five years ago)

And that solo. Every section of it could be expanded to 5 minutes, but it's so concise.

it is the guitar that makes it enjoyable

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:39 (five years ago)

it's a well-constructed and beautiful little ditty, too. hence all the covers.

edgard varese-type beat (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:41 (five years ago)

Little Wing was my #5 and I knew it was going to be high on the ILX poll. Surprising to me is that is not a unique ILX take: it's Jimi's fourth most played song on Spotify, higher than Fire or Foxey Lady.

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 20:41 (five years ago)

i should mention that i totally forgot until now about mr. mcfall's chamber's version of "little wing" from their "like the milk" album, which surely would have made my covers shortlist if i'd remembered. it's not on youtube, but it is exceeding fine.

I forgot to vote in this poll, but I'm pretty happy with the results. My question is: does anyone else prefer the futuristic, multilayered studio version of the Star Spangled banner on Rainbow Bridge to the Woodstock version?

J. Sam, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 21:26 (five years ago)

ok, i couldn't make do with just three picks for hendrix covers. here's my 2 1/2 hour longlist and even then i feel like i'm still missing some important stuff here:

niebiesko czarni - purple hazy
billy tipton memorial sax quartet - all manic
rozz williams & gitane demone - manic depression
screaming trees - love or confusion
emmylou harris - may this be love
the main squeeze - fire
john klemmer - third stone from the sun
dick dale - third stone from the sun
shockabilly - are you experienced?
gilberto gil - up from the skies
mr. mcfall's chamber - little wing
richard lloyd - castles made of sand
open hand - have you ever been (to electric ladyland)
chico magnetic band - crosstown traffic
earthless - come on (let the good times roll)
living colour - burning of the midnight lamp
kimmo pohjonen - driving south
prince - villanova junction -> peach -> rock me baby
bob dylan - dolly dagger
the white stripes - hear my train a comin'
alain blesing - 1983
eddie hazel - voodoo chile
shibusashirazu orchestra - little wing
miles davis- mademoiselle mabry

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 23:09 (five years ago)

That screaming trees cover is impressive

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 03:51 (five years ago)

The question about 7b9 chords was interesting btw, since it's the 7#9 chord that always gets talked about in Hendrix's work. I'll think about that.

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 03:52 (five years ago)

But yeah, I voted for all of the top 5. "1983" was my #1. I'm surprised its placing is a surprise to anyone!

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 03:53 (five years ago)

I definitely meant to refer to the raised 9 lol, though I’d be interested to see if there are some b9 chords sprinkled in his oeuvre

I talk too much about teaching, but I will say that showing the "Star Spangled Banner" Woodstock clip to a classroom of nine-year-olds was as much fun as I ever had. And if you gave them enough context, talking about what was going on in the country at the time, they got it.
