Seeing how established and vital African pop is on ILM (and not only), let's be among the first to start off the new year !I assume we will have a separate thread for the South African scene(s) and that breastcrawl will curate a Spotify playlist.

but yes, one of the big musical stories of last year was amapiano taking root outside of South Africa. watch this blow up further in 2021. in Nigeria homegrown piano is all over the charts right now. lots of producers (including some of the biggest names) are taking a stab at it.case in point: the biggest song in Nigeria right now:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFX9cruEfooRexxie ft. Mohbad • KPK (Ko Por Ke)another big one besides the Zinoleesky, that’s providing Phyno with his biggest hit in ages:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YrjQz_zncYDJ Kaywise ft. Phyno • High Waythis is not exactly a smash, but it should be - I love it to pieces, such a sticky hook!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnN1JeKowTUEltee Skhillz ft. Niniola • Lucy (Remix)(this one is actually produced by a SA producer, Eternal Africa, who works with Naija artists as well)

Did we do Tanzapiano yet?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hIka4cx_-URayvanny ft. Diamond Platnumz • Wozacan’t wait for the “Jerusalema”-biting video!(actually we did: I posted Marioo’s “Mama Amina” with Sho Madjozi & Bontle Smith on the Amapiano thread last month, but “Woza” is more interesting to me because the amapiano is incorporated in the bongo flava here)

so excuse me for being on a roll, *BUT*:that L.A.X track Nabozo posted is a great example of how thoroughly amapiano has permeated Naijapop in just one year. it’s not overt amapiano, like the Zinoleesky, Rexxie and Kaywise tracks, but it’s unthinkable without it.(the same can probably be said about that Darkovibes track, although it’s possible I’m hearing things)I’m constantly updating my (quite possibly unique) Spotify playlist for tracking and tracing amapiano’s influence on (with a few exceptions, so far) West African pop. I’m now at 99 tracks, but I’m sure I will come across many more, it’s become hard to keep up:🇳🇬🇬🇭🇿🇦NAIghaPIANO🎹🎹(my criterium is: if I feel the track wouldn’t have sounded like it does without amapiano I’m including it. it’s likely not everyone will agree with all of my choices. I welcome comments and suggestions!)

🔻🔻Could everyone please label the tracks they are posting? It makes it so much easier to search for something, and as with all internet links, there is every chance these YouTubes (or Soundclouds or whatever the case may be) will become broken at some point (in a couple of years perhaps, or you know, next week, it happens all the time), and then we won’t have anything left to go on.🔺🔺

No hits, but a few things that caught my attention lately from some "minor" artists:- IcePrince feat Tekno - Make Up Your Mind. It's no "One Leg Up" but decent single from last year, I like the saxophone.- Mmzy - Wildin. New guy, not fully convinced by Animal despite the interesting somber tone / sax, but I like Wildin.- Barry Jhay - O Ga Ra. This is from 2018, I had never heard of the guy. Warm stuff, I like that flute.- Ecool - Sobente. Nothing particular, a little slow, but competent.
The DJ Spinall album (Grace) is noteworthy if you're looking for a consistent set of songs (and you don't think albums are overrated)
Ok I'll post something officiallyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngZIp43W3wsRuntown - If E Happen for Lagos

honestly I'm trying to take the poll less seriously this year -- ilm massive isn't what it once was and that's fine, I don't need to get upset about it. But vote for Koffee's "Lockdown" and you'll make me happy longneck :)
― rob, Thursday, 21 January 2021 23:26 (four years ago)
I will!Wait... so no one nom'd any of the Scorpion Kings albums? Just the Kabza solo? No vote splitting then, I guess. Lol.

A lot of really great stuff this year - even quite a few albums(!) - but i don’t expect much of it to enter the list. I’m listening to breastcrawl’s nom’d SA tracks right now and am amazed at how many great tracks I’ve missed even though I’ve been listening to SA stuff all year.
― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 21 January 2021 23:53 (four years ago)
so otm -- it was an overwhelmingly abundant year and I can't pretend I heard much more than a fraction. weirdly I feel like albums is where there might be some afropop consensus? iirc I voted for Wizkid, Tiwa, Amaarae, and Azana...might be forgetting something else too. I nommed the uneven Burna but can't remember if I had room for it
― rob, Friday, 22 January 2021 00:03 (four years ago)
I prefer the Davido to the Burna tbh but not sure if it was nom’d? Didn’t see Niniola either? Oh well. Will vote for Wiz and Tiwa, the best of the bunch.
― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 22 January 2021 00:13 (four years ago)
hm might be worth double checking the Davido, there was def some enthusiasm for that. also I didn't care for it, but I would assume the Fireboy DML was nominated

Ha, I may have exaggerated on the 77 tracks thread cause it's hard to make afro pop unpleasant, but after he peaked in 2017, his rehashed singing has become really tired by now, grating even, it's physical. A bit like I can't stand Drake repeating his same modulations over and over. And the fact that he comes from money and gets the sunshine other artists deserve does not help. The exceptions for Davido might be his dancehall collabs (Dun Rich, Risky). "The Best" is no exception.
― Nabozo, Thursday, 28 January 2021 20:09 (four years ago)
he's hit or miss for me too, though I loved "FEM" last year and "Aye" is in the running for favorite afrobeats of all time
― rob, Thursday, 28 January 2021 20:25 (four years ago)
i've liked both of the lsat two albums a lot -- there's a lushness and a romanticism in his music that i really respond to. he's kinda working the same sound on both albums but it's pretty sui generis to me so i don't mind it.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 January 2021 20:32 (four years ago)
I could not decide on any sort of Omah Lay song so I just saved my vote for him for my albums bracket. I think I would have voted for "Bad Influence" if I had to pick 1.

― That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 January 2021 05:10 (four years ago)
Lol are you fact-checking my enjoyment of the poll?
Okay: I'd say yes and no. The poll rollout/experience is definitely enjoyable (I do apologize that that post implied otherwise), and I genuinely appreciate your, Moka, and seandalai's work. But it's less valuable to me these days, because it's now very rare that I hear new tracks that I love via the results. I'm honestly not sure why. I'm open to the possibility that it's my fault! Maybe my tastes have calcified and I'm less open-minded than I think I am; writing this post I remembered I like the Selena Gomez song and should revisit it. But while I'm glad there was no repeat of the purple mountains fiasco, I can't say it's objectively better to have three Jessie Ware songs either just because I like her and not PM.
Anyway, the point of my posts upthread was that I am bored and a more than a little embarrassed by my tendency to (pre-)hand-wring over the results every year, and I wanted to not do that this year. On further reflection, I should absolutely add "ILM was better back then" to the boring + embarrassing post topics list--that's both simplistic and a pointless thing to whine about.
― rob, Saturday, 30 January 2021 14:02 (four years ago)
lol i was just being bitchy! in any case, the poll encompassed a significant amount of handpicked afropop/beats this year; figured you might be more into it. i'm aware it provides different people with different things; all good regardless!

I suppose I was also trying to be high-minded and not say the poll is good now because more stuff I like placed :)

Lol at the Swiss-german afrobeats, you can barely make out what he's saying, which is probably for the better. There's potential though, elements are right. Not sure I'm feeling the new Rema. The beat is a bit dark, I like the part when there's a second layer of sound but then it becomes too experimental.

The Teni album (her debut!) is making me very happy. have to admit I haven’t been on top her matter for a while, even when I know she can absolutely kill it at any given moment in the most unexpected places, but Wondaland is a multifaceted delight, both lyrically and musically (it’s a naijapiano-free zone tho, in case you were wondering).don’t be fooled by ”For You”, her current big hit with Davido - it’s Teni-by-numbers and doesn’t do much for me. the highest light on the first pass is “Moslado”:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWbxQCz9zPA(if it reminds you of Fireboy’s “Gbas Gbos” there is a reason and the reason is producer Ozedikus).there is one song that makes me even happier tho, and that’s “Injure Me” (an Olamide co-write!), which for all intents and purposes is Teni’s coming-out song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7bOeffd48E

Alright one more archival request then I'm done: is there a thread where the semantics of "afropop" vs "afrobeats" vs etc etc was hashed out?
― recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 12:19 (four years ago)
it's a good question and it has been hashed out a fair bit. as with all genre distinctions, it's grey areas and blurred lines all the way. whether "afrobeats" refers specifically to contemporary West African pop music or not is a question in itself. whether it's even a useful definition at all is a question. is all music from Nigeria and Ghana "afrobeats"? What about East, South and North? It can becoem quite a messy business. Where possible, I try to use Naija-pop, Ghana-pop etc but it's not always so useful tosilo everything into dozens of subgenres if you want to talk about music that shares a lot in common

And since we're in confessional mode, my zero year is 2014 with SOS from Yung L. I discovered a few things (Burna Boy) on my own, and then a little while later friends of my roommate introduced me to the South African scene on the dancefloor of our living room with Kohna, Xigubu or Shumaya and suddenly what looked at first like a curiosity was the beginning of (probably) a life passion. I also married one of said friends. She says I dance better now.

that’s lovely, Nabozo. can’t claim for African pop to have impacted my love life like that, but hearing Sarkodie’s “U Go Kill Me” changed my musical life for good - and for the better!anyways, sorta forgot about “Hallelu”, but it’s good. hadn’t played “Southy Love” much either, because of my (non-musical) aversion against Peruzzi, but have to admit it’s a great track - P.Priime proving he’s also great at naijapiano.always happy when other posters give me a reason to go back to a particular track that I didn’t rate enough initially or that just fell thru the cracks. another case in point: dog latin having Worlasi’s “Fkn Guy” in his Q1 highlights list. I posted it here myself and then basically forgot about it, but it’s great!let’s see what you all think of the new Eltee Skhillz. it’s produced by Krizbeatz, who in 2016 had the hottest sound in Africa with Tekno’s “Pana” but has been nothing more than solid since. this track however... it’s not naijapiano, like Eltee’s “Lucy (Remix)” with Niniola, but it’s going all kinds of places. EDM and dancehall came to mind, and that is also how it is described in the YouTube blurb, but I never heard anything like it before tbh:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2hlM7BIXZsEltee Skhillz • Galala

seems like a good moment to deflect and finally post Naira’s previous moment of glory, “Soapy”:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q6Rixmvujc(seriously, this track, one of the defining African hits of 2019, was never posted on ILM. my lame excuse is that I never got around to finishing the accompanying thesis I was working on in my head. did manage to squeeze it into my EOY track noms tho)

Soapy is his other great track, yes. And I do think the raunchiness of Coming... uhhh... hits the right spot. It’s almost sweet - the song sums up what most people have been longing for these past thirteen (?) months perfectly. Who doesn’t like coming?

didn't mean anything thread-policey by that! I just like to specify tracks a bit, because Afropop/Afrobeats is not a country, so to speak. we've had several UK tracks in this thread already.
there is a UK-specific thread as well tho: UK afro - thread for discussing MoStack, J-Hus, Kojo Funds, Abra Cadabra, Belly Squad, Yxng Bane etcsome of it ends up in the rolling UK grime & rap threads, this is the current edition: Grime and UK rap 2021...and let me plug J Hus and Pa Salieu while I'm at it: j hus - dem boy paigonPa Salieu: Send Them to Coventry

Police N' Teef is excellent, and I like the nasal high-pitched voice. At first Amapiano was just copy-pasted into the beats, but now there are a lot of songs that have integrated it much more tightly and subtly.

My taste axis seems to be tilting more to South Africa this year, but I really liked Blaqbonez ft. Amaarae & Buju • Bling (still listening to the Amaarae album regularly). BBC remix was good too--maybe it's the obvs dancehall referencing? but the filthiness was less remarkable to me compared to the Naira
I'll need to check out the Joeboy album as I *really* like that "Door" (and "Lonely")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea7WUPHorp4
(video is the censored version, fyi)
I can't decide if this is lovely and lush or over-refrigerated, and there's a part where Iwer sounds like he's interpolating "Strawberry Letter 23" that I find distracting. Given the lineup it's kind of begging for a remix with Wizkid!

People here are bound to like this lovely romantic joint. And what's not to love, it's been growing on me too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIcsU494u8MAdekunle Gold & Lucky Daye - Sinner

I like the almost Joe Hisaishi style instrumentation on 'Sinner' - the intro bars reel me in, but sadly the song itself doesn't grab me.

^ha Hisaishi is really otm (as is the rest of your assessment)
Lady Donli's previous project didn't quite grab me, but I'm liking her new EP WILD

Cheers for this. I feel a bit out the loop when it comes to afrobeats/african music in general (actually ne wmusic in general) at the moment.

I was going to say some gqom song but all the songs are listed viborg :)Omunye is sort of the peak hit for these guys (Distruction Boyz). Dlala Thukzin is the slim Dlala. This year he did Phuze.Since we haven't posted the full version of the remix:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpqgLgZvCmADlala Thukzin - Phuze Remix Featuring Zaba , Sir Trill , Mpura Mpura & Rascoe Kaos

A friend named her child Naledi. I love that name (means star in Pedi).
― Nabozo, Friday, 15 October 2021 07:17 (three years ago)
That is a beautiful name. But thank you, that was stupid of me. I listened to it live and failed to check the description afterwards. It wouldn’t be a normal week for me on ILM unless I posted something really dumb. (Also realized after posting it might be more suited to the S.A. thread sorry.)That remix is strong stuff for sure!

― curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 December 2021 18:02 (three years ago)
It's been a pretty weak year for afrobeats to be honest, petering out from the fireworks from the two last years with Wizkid and Burna Boy as giants, the South African connection, first-class newcomers (Fireboy, Rema, Omah Lay). It just seemed there were more releases. Also breastcrawl has gone missing. The fact that Love Nwantiti is the biggest hit this year and spawned 8 remixes is a little worrying for the competition.
― Nabozo, Thursday, 2 December 2021 19:58 (three years ago)
I'd agree, with a bunch of caveats about my subjectivity: I'm def paying less attention than in past years and haven't warmed to many of those newcomers the way I did the previous cohort. Plus I more or less burned out on amapiano by the middle of the year, so naija turning to that sound doesn't exactly thrill me. But I do think there's been something a bit bland & empty about most of the afrobeats I heard this year; not necessarily bad, just forgettable & a little too vibey for its own good.
Sort of the exception that proves the rule(?): Tems' EP is one of the highlights of the year imo...all 18 minutes of it.

Rema lol
Sorry, meant TEMS lol
i liked the joeboy and laycon albums a lot
some great songs too, like bankulli’s “foreign,” “bloody samaritan,” that amaarae collab from the tiwa ep, and yeah, “replay” and “found” from the tems ep

All Over Me and Don't Want You Back are my faves off the Laycon album and I'll be nominating at least one of them for EOY.
Others:
Yeeko is fantastic. Bounce by Rema is exceptional.Overdose by DunnieNavy Kenzo - NisogeleePrettyboydo - Police n TeefKwesi Arthur - Baajo
I've enjoyed a fair bit of Afrobeats this year, but it was frontloaded

Don’t care much about the rest but Navy Kenzo beat could be something I’d absolutely love in the right context.

Crayon - Too Correct (feat. Rema)Masterkraft, Bella Shmurda & Zlatan - HalleluOmah Lay - UnderstandWizkid - Mood (feat. Buju)Ice Prince - Kolo (feat. In the worst case scenario, none of them will make my ballot, but they're still on the playlist
― Nabozo, Tuesday, 14 December 2021 07:58 (three years ago)
I've been asked to play "Afrobeat and Highlife" on NYE. I'm only adjacently familiar with that kind of stuff, so I'll probably stray into more modern territory; so these personalised lists are great.
I always think it would be great to have a mini Afrobeats poll (or maybe including soca/dancehall too since there seems to be a lot of crossover between posters more than anything else.
