We have this argument every year, and every year I state that bolding DNP gives you a chance to rep for loved songs that we haven't already discussed to death, and therefore is a much better system. But people are going to do what they want to do.

It depends on the composition of your ballot - if a minority of your tracks placed then bolding everything else is harsh on the eyes

I'm not fully on the Taxxon train, partly because I just can't cope with artists who release way way too much, but I did get completely obsessed with 'Try the Wine'. I love it.

I wasn't sure whether to comment on it at all but thanks to people for voting for us and getting us a very respectable placement in the longlist! I was terrified that for all the chatter that nobody would actually vote for us and I'd be deeply sad and embarrassed. There's always the albums list for that though, ha.

You'll make the albums I hope! (Although, terrible confession, I only voted for you in tracks, because while I love the album I loved a lot of albums, but that track in particular was imo absurdly great)

I also didn't vote for the Perfume Genius album and I really probably should have cos it is full of amazing songs (weird how I didn't put 'lots of amazing songs' and 'amazing album' together lol), so extra reason to retroactively enfranchise Geoffrey

Ah man all of ILM would have had to watch the Dancing video! Aaaah. OK I'll stop. But I think Dancing and Describe deserve at least a bit of hoo-ha considering they should have placed. I considered voting for both but opted for other songs by the same artists. Describe is astonishingly beautiful and if it didn't have a 2-minute ambient outro I might have gone for it

perfume genius has never had much cachet here for some reason, despite his brand of gay artpop seeming like it should be ilm bait? i really loved his last album but there wasn't much else enthusiasm for it. this year's one was good too but not quite enough to make my ballot

Favourite things that were new to me from the final 77: Blue Comanche, Rottings Hills, Dragonball Durag, Jazzidisciples, Surpriser, My Rajneesh, Anthems, Dying To Believe, Black Kaveera, Trouble, Fanfare For Effective Freedom.

I'll be honest that there were also quite a few things in the final 77 that I was a bit 'eh' about. Didn't have much chance to comb through the noms list until after I'd submitted, but Shadow Community and Vic Bang both made a big impression at an early stage. Jorja Smith and Real Lies were my main takeaways from the 77; both glorious.

Azana/Tiwa/Theo P/Monét tracks were all from albums that I acquired and then totally slept on all year; as ever, when overwhelmed by a backlog of listening, this poll lights the way.

Is there a relatively simple metric that allows you to group together songs (or albums) that were voted on by a single cluster of people? Like, say a song S1 is voted on by voters V1, V2,..., V5, and S2 is voted on by V1,..., V4, whereas S3 and S4 is voted on by V6, V7,..., V10. They don't have to be distinct clusters, but the idea is that S1 and S2 were voted on by one group, S3 and S4 by another, etc. I don't feel like implementing it but this seems doable.

I'm interested in this as a way to measure the consensus-y-ness of polls over the years. If a poll had many of these (small-is) clusters, it would point to a fragmented poll; fewer (but bigger) ones would indicate more consensus.

I feel like ILM year end polls have gotten more fragmented, but I would like a way to measure this more distinctly.

You wouldn't expect a linear relationship (the 100th ballot will contribute fewer "unseen" items than the 1st), and we only have a few samples to go on; but still you'd expect that on average, more ballots->more tracks. It does look like things are less hivemindy than they used to be (pre-2015-ish), for whatever reason.

You've given one way of estimating fragmentedness / "hivemindedness", by isolated voters. I'm also interested in another way in which the vote could be more fragmented, that there are distinct communities voting for particular songs, in clusters of 4 or 5 voters, in a higher proposition than in the past. You could envisage a poll like this having a single hive mind, or by contrast several smaller clusters of minds, that mostly ignore what other clusters are interested in, and are just happy to get their two or three favored songs to place.

This is happening to some extent. I’ve seen debate on rolling and artist threads - k pop in 2019, SAULT in 2020 for example - about whether there is a consensus on favourite songs, with a view to avoid vote splitting in the EOY poll. But it’s only ever going to amount to one or two votes out of 25 per ballot. Not enough to define a sub-community within the overall ILX community? After all, some SAULT voters will also vote J Ware, others will find her terminally dull or go nowhere near her music in the first place.

With ~2000 observations to work with I think it might be too sparse to say anything conclusive at the track level. Might find more regularities in artist space or genre space; or the album poll data might be more stable. If I get time some day, I can try something. Or if anyone wants to take a shot at it send me an ILXmail and we can talk about how to share the data.
