dangerdoom was actually my first exposure to mf doom. i was 15 and very much in adult swim's target demo, and a huge ghostface fan, so those two connections were what brought me to "the mask" and then the rest of the album

It's really good. I don't know how fair a shake I could really give KMD having only known them as something from DOOM's past, devouring his solo releases as they were coming out. Of course this one never got properly released til 2001.

After listening again recently I still think Geedorah would be better as an EP than a whole record

The tracks with DOOM verses are some of his best. I was surprised to find that this was released so close to Monsta Island Czars' "Escape from Monsta Island", which came first (February 2003, with Geedorah in July). I think a couple of these guys are still going, besides Grimm? But it wasn't long before DOOM was referring to them as "Midgets Into Crunk".

i really don't think there's much fat on it. i know people knock it because there are fewer DOOM raps, which sure, but the contributions from the other rappers are generally range from pretty solid to excellent (in the cases of hassan chop and mr. fantastik)

I was pumped for the Grimm comp showing up. Thought it was a good sign of off the beaten path things to come. my contributions to this are (I think) pretty boring/well known so am hoping for some unusual tracks placing.

The Grimm tape is really fun but I will forever judge it because for years my one local hmv only ever had one copy of that in the doom cd section when I really wanted a copy of vaudeville villain

i found Doom in early 2000. before that i probably would've told you that Kool Keith was the best rapper ever and that Gravediggaz "6 feet deep" was peak rap lol

I got into doom by way of Four tet and was never crazy into hip hop. Loved Madvillian and worked my way backwards from there. And, I just didn’t get into Doomsday as much as his other stuff. Don’t know what to tell you guys tbh! I don’t think it’s terrible, but it was never something I really reached for.

Doom really knew how to work an apocalyptic sample. Some of those gheedorah beats, and then cells on born like this, they're both lo fi and humongous.

Are hardcore DOOM fans not as into Madvillainy because it's seen as the 'popular choice'? I had it #1 as I think it's one of the most staggering rap albums ever made. I think I had it #4 on my ILM 00s Albums ballot from 2019.

His songwriting, lyricism and vocal tone is just incredible, it feels like the full flowering of his talents that began with KMD. The preciseness and brevity of it, that he can get his point across so perfectly in these little 90-150 seconds-long songs. I'll be sure to gush more about individual tracks in the track roll out!

The beats for me are mainly just a nice accompaniment/add-on and Madlib obviously provided a great creative foil for him. But for me it's just a lyrical and vocal masterclass from DOOM.

I need to give it a proper listen as I stopped listening to it ages ago. Its obv v good, I just prefer doom on doom beats personally. Also I'm not that huge a fan of Madlib though obv I can see why and where hes good, I just find many madlib beats too unadorned or something. Too 'small' (?) in dimension.

Yeah fair enough, I probably prefer DOOM's own beats as well - they were one of the joys of relistening to all his albums for this poll actually. The guy was just insanely talented.

Zero. Kinda surprising. I can't really say it improved any of the songs but it was fun, and had extra material (Monkey Suit and the remix of Air are great).

I don't think I had it on there - limit one album per artist. But it's obviously fantastic.

I had VV #2 on my albums poll for this one - such a great rediscovery - then Mm..Food at #3. DOOM's 03-04 period is insane - would have to be one of the all-time great creative hot-streaks.

I'm not a hardcore fan but Operation: Doomsday and especially Vaudeville Villain are more distinctive.

Does anyone consciously do this past their teens? I'm not sure how to articulate it exactly but I guess that Food is more clearly for fans of rap. There's a reason "Beef Rapp" is there and not on Madvillainy. And if you think that "Beef Rapp" slays everything on Madvillany, you weren't going to like the album rankings. If anyone has noticed me anywhere else on this board you know I'm pretty eclectic and not the hugest rap guy... but holy shit, it's "Beef Rapp"! (and how many more songs at that level!)

It's funny to hear about how badly Madlib wanted "One Beer" to work on Madvillainy, to the point of making the ludicrous drunk version... that sort of points at the difference.

(that's not even to talk about Doomsday... which I did put at #1 in the end despite my dumb spreadsheet trying to claim I prefer Food)

i think the reason why i prefer food, gheedorah, and doomsday to madvillainy is because i think doom is a better producer than madlib.

I had Take Me To Your Leader very high but it was clear from the other thread it was going to struggle with a certain strain of Doom purist. Food was certainly my #1.

Yes I can see how Beef Rapp wouldn't work at all on Madvillainy, which has a much more jumping around style with all those little 1-3 minute tracks.

I think this tracks roll out will be fascinating - no idea what the consensus choices are for his top tracks; there is such a bounty of riches there in his discography. Getting a top 77 like in the end of year polls seems appropriate given the depth of tracks on offer.

Its cool actually that although doom is seen as an all rapping /producing auteur etc and he was, he was also quite ok with, and obv good at collaborating on other producers terms too.

Madvillainy was my introduction to DOOM and for the longest time it would've been my clear favourite but revisiting the catalogue recently I ended up getting back into Vaudeville Villain in a big way so that bumped it to #2 in my list (thinking about it more I should maybe have put Take Me To Your Leader above it as well). I do know what people mean about there being something uniquely special about DOOM over his own beats though.

Week-long tracks roll-out sounds brilliant if you're up for it! The more DOOM chat the better really.

Dunno about that but I'll do more individually than I had thought. Of course anyone feel free to comment on tracks you "miss" live.

Gas Face on this poll is like "Doot Doot" on the Underworld poll. Obviously great, but so removed in years from the artist's main career thrust that it's hard to assess against the bulk of their tracks when preparing a ballot.

I have to say, his little interjection of "Let me watch" at the end of that track is hilarious. The guy has so much humour in his music alongside such spiritual and technical heaviness/seriousness, which is one of the great joys of listening to him. There's a line on Rhinestone that illustrates what I was talking about the other day re his voice control on Madvillainy. He leaves this tiny pause before: “Oh my aching hands…” that conveys a world weariness mixed with a degree of irony and showmanship.

It’s precisely placed there at the end of this virtuoso rapping performance like, “Yeah, and what about it?” crossed with, “I’m tired, go away now”. It’s those little moments that make DOOM a singular artist for me.

When it leaked, it was one of the first times I really went crazy about something new and special and like keeping a bad secret. I think I was about 13 or 14 and just got broadband, really not knowing that I was gonna end up downloading like a billion records after that, everything before took like 45 minutes for downloading 1 song and having my mum go mental about the phone bill.

It resonates now for me as a memento of that horrible Iraq War era. Something about its brevity and brutality ("It costs billions to blow humans in half") gives it a lasting power.

The way he subtly intensifies his flow with, "the old man preaches about the gold sand beaches, the cold hand reaches for the old tan Ellesses" at the end of Meat Grinder still gives me chills.

On the page those bars are nothing special (that sort of beastly internal rhyming is par for the course with DOOM), but the impact is all in the delivery and the careful ratcheting of tension across the track, whilst it still somehow remains distant, abstract and enigmatic, never fully comprehendible.

Honestly I think of Doom in a way I think of how a lot of folks think of idk Lou Reed or whoever. Maybe not the biggest but so integral to my love of music x genuinely how so many musicians after loved music. Someone like Lou Reed may get all of the history books thrown at them but I think Doom is equally important. It is strange growing up in internet 1.50. It is not to diminish older musicians, and to be slightly confused by new musicians. I was 15 when VV/KG came out, none of my friends knew about it except for me to telling them about it and yet Madvillainy was in most top tens for the whole decade and when he died sooooooo many musicians talked about his influence. I don’t know if I’ll ever get closer to someone who meant so much but only if you knew...

Honestly I think DOOM is one of the rare artists where I think about 30 songs could be #1 and I’d be cool with it.

Obv the two songs mentioned next are about as classic as any music ever made can be.

Honestly Doomsday is a top 50 all time greatest hip hop jam ever, even knowing I voted a different song #1. Want your first song on your first record to be insane, in the best possible way?

I love that hip hop, especially of that era, had such a purist ideals of making something new, and not doing what puffy did... so he samples an 80s record like sade over Scott la rock scratches

"Lickupon" might be the only track in the top 20 I *didn't* vote for, lol. (Though, again, my ballot was huge: about twice as long as I'm accustomed to in these polls.) So it all seems very solid with the playlist now playing.

Just catching up. Great top 5 and deserved #1 for Doomsday which will likely end up as his 'legacy track'.

Great post from a hoy hoy y'day re DOOM's influence. The closest analogue I can think of for his place in music history is Borges in the world of literature. Both took on fantastical/surreal subjects, but underpinned with an intellectual rigor that kept their work grounded and compelling. And both voracious consumers of literature/pop culture that enabled them to endlessly riff on things.

Great job with the poll Maf! You should treat yourself with two apple pies and a small fries. Or maybe a quick shot of double rum.
