APB
From Trouserpress
A popular member of Scotland's neo-funk movement, this Aberdeen group found a friend in American college radio, where the quintet's pressurized dance-rock was very well-received. The ten 1981-'85 singles compiled on Something to Believe In are either effectively claustrophobic and offbeat ("Shoot You Down") or trite and obnoxious ("Rainy Day"). The CD has bonus tracks.

no reggae, except for 'Under Mi Sleng Teng' - famous for not having a bassline????

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a tragedy that the Beatles' "Rain" wasn't mentioned. Paul McCartney's best work.

Alton Ellis is reggae...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

[Rocksteady actually ;)]

didn't spot him there. still should be more than one though! (i guess you could include Beats International, since it's a common reggae bassline the Clash were using)

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Even more interesting, no one mentioned Pink Floyd's "Money". I'd add that, The Charlatans' "I Don't Want To See The Sights", and The Jam's "In The City"

Xibalba (xibalba), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

weird. 100 top basslines and hardly any dance or reggae. Shoud be called 'top 100 basslines in genres for which the bass is little more than a backing instrument'.

I'm sorry, but any top 100 without

I should've Known Better - Mica Paris
Black Disciples - Burning Spear
Lucky - Lewis Taylor
No doubt about it - Hot Chocolate
Lost in music - Chic or

Virtually anything off A Northern Soul; from the loping opening intro on 'New Decade' and on through to the swinging 'Life's An Ocean' and the lilting 'Stormy Coulds' outro Simon Jones is like a fucking hypnotist on that album and the consistent motifs and patterns that crop up throught the piece are a lesson in how to tie up an album.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaaaah. This is such a travesty it's untrue. 90% rock bands in a best bassline list? And no disco whatsoever?!? My shameful omissions:

Under Mi Sleng Teng famous for not having a bass line? What? The sleng teng is one of the most famous bass lines (riddims) in reggae! It gave birth to ragga...It was not, contrary to popular belief, produced using a tinny casio keyboard preset. Tony Asher was the keyboardist who recorded it for King Jammy.

Other terrific bass lines...

Almost everything from Studio One-Throw me Corn, Real Rock, Answer, Lecture etc. etc.

Winston Riley's Stalag riddim

I could go on...

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, "Dancing In Your Head" obviously. Probably "Free Jazz" too. For rock choices, "24 Hours", "Tom Sawyer", "The Lemon Song", maybe "The Sprawl".

Darren mentions In Trance As Mission. I remember humming that bassline to myself in the queue for drinks at a cricket match once and the bloke behind me says: Is that In Trance As Mission by Simple Minds? You can imagine the surprised yelping and gasping that ensued.

If nothing else, this anecdote certainly illustrates the distinctive nature of that bassline.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The band I play drums for has covered the Night Court theme! The bassist learned it and played it one day, and our guitarist (a French-Canadian) freaked out laughing, because apparently it was from watching episodes of that very show that he learned how to speak English.

Also - Rick James "Superfreak".

It's been, oh, weeks since I last bothered you about Stump's A Fierce Pancake album on here, so this is just to mention that Kev Hopper's bass lines ("lines") on there are strange and wonderful throughout, e.g. on "Chaos" or the title track.

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax is wrong on "Ceremony". That's a six-string bass, that is.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe noone has mentioned any of Bruce Thomas's basslines from his tenure with the Attractions. Most of them, along with most of Jamerson's, should be included.

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 23 January 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bruce Thomas' bass line on "Party Girl" is a great one. He does get pretty busy on the others, but it isn't like the Attractions had a real guitar player filling up space.

earlnash, Friday, 23 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I nominate Roxy Music.
They used different hot session bassists across almost each of their few albums, like a revolving door. It was a deliberate policy, i've read. My CD copy doesn't even tell me who the bassist was for 'For Your Pleasure'. It's like Roxy Music have a semi-continuously-variable bass, spread across albums.
This does apply slightly more to the Enoey-influenced earlier albums. Maybe it's an oblique strategy. Whatever, I believe that it's a subtle yet strong ingredient in their consistent un-predictable weirdnes.

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 23 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Verdine White on Earth, Wind & Fire's Shining Star.

Anything by James Jamerson, most notably the aforementioned "Signed, Sealed Delivered," as well as the Four Tops' "Bernadette" (which Carol Kaye claims to have played on; the truth is inconclusive), Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and the Gladys Knight and the Pips version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine." (Please learn his name, and credit him, and not the singers, for the bass parts on Motown songs.)

Mike Watt on just about everything, nost notably fIREHOSE's "Down With the Bass" and anything on Double Nickels.

Bruce Thomas for "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding?" and "Every Day I Write the Book."

"but it isn't like the Attractions had a real guitar player filling up space."

And your point is? Is this attitude widespread? Is this why there are so many lame rock bass parts on this list?

Can't believe it took so long for "Bernadette" to get a mention.

So I'll just add Macca on "Paperback Writer" and whoever's playing on the Animals' "Monterey." And Lighthouse, "One Fine Morning," though it's lost in most mixes to all those horns.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 24 January 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

In 'Trance as Mission' was a bass line that intensely annoyed me. I thought of it as a sub-U2 or sub-JD bassline at the time. The cross-rhythm is i guess what makes it attractive or memorible, but the notes themselves, the pitches, they're so banal (this seems to detract from the song, which i also have trouble not finding banal).
I thought Simple Minds were very funky around '81-'82-'83, but here they were putting their unfunkiest song first on their funky double album, getting it out of the way, or so it seemed. The cross-rhythms thing they were doing then was very danceable, but too cross-rythmic on 'In Trance as Mission' (and maybe the words and music too cruisy).

(i'm only posting this because it seems worth pointing out that 'In Trance as Mission' is also least favourite Simple Minds bass line for at least one person out there)

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 24 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I do love it.

Someone already got Sisters of Mercy "Lucretia My Reflection" which would be one of the first I would think of. But there needs to be some more goth rock in this bitch so howsabout, "Dance With Me" by Lords of the New Church.

Duff McKagen's little riff at the beginning of Sweet Child o' Mine is pretty nice

For simple yet insidiously catchy bass groove, Charles Wright's "Express Yourself" never fails to get me jumpin' like a kangaroo.

Hard to know who precisely plays on this, but the line-up for the album contains the following Bass Illuminati: Ron Carter, Richard Davis, Paul Chambers, Ben Tucker, Gary Peacock and Milt Hinton.

Never heard that version! I only know the Gary Burton one, due to it being sampled.
