It is only silly rock critics who don't like Muse

Too busy listening to silly samples to enjoy true art. I mock those afraid to love those unafraid of grand pianos, and a nice long solo.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

what about silly samples of grand pianos?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

That's silly. Why not play a real grand piano like a true musician. You silly man.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was only 15 year old drama students whose parents hate them that listened to Muse?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

No, they are also incongruously Russia's most popular modern rock band...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Instead of embracing Communism, they have sensibly turned to geetars.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I was comin in here to shout: "Dom Passantino to thread".

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

julio to thread with cecil taylor comments re. grand pianos/long solos please!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

True art eh? I quite like that stuff. By the way, what is it again? Oh, and I would rather saw off both legs with a rusted tin can lid and use them to club myself to death while bathing in iodine than listen to fucking Muse.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I was comin in here to shout: "Dom Passantino to thread".

My first ever "... to thread"! I have truly arrived on the ILX scene.

Who'd win in a "being shit " contest then, Matt Bellamy or Roddy "small faced freak" Woomble?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

*Oh, and I would rather saw off both legs with a rusted tin can lid and use them to club myself to death while bathing in iodine than listen to fucking Muse*

Then go ahead, you silly man. No tears will be shed by moi. I will be at home listening to real musicians making metaphorical love to their geetars.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt Bellamy because Idlewild are GOOD! There, I said it.

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's only silly rock critics who don't like Muse, can we have some of the silly dance, rap, and pop critics from this board to thread to offer their views on the whole shebang?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt Bellamy because Idlewild are GOOD! There, I said it.

Ah, but if it was a triple threat with Tim Wheeler...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard it called Metaphorical Love before.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"Who'd win in a "being shit " contest then, Matt Bellamy or Roddy "small faced freak" Woomble?"

You're mean! I like Roddy Womble's style! 100 Broken Windows was ace, too. I think Muse have some very good singles, but then I'm unafraid of grand pianos.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt Bellamy reminds me of Pinhead from Hellraiser. (thank god noone will say THEREFORE, CLASSIC after this post because noone likes Muse)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The intertwining vocals on "When I Argue", like someone is weaving a piece of string, up and under, under and up, all sinewy and lovely. The "SHAPES!" shout from the scree in the background, kinda like in Love's "Red Telephone" when they're singing about being painted and Arthur sings "paint... me..." and then three, difft simultaneous answers: "Black/Pink/White". OK, it really is only the one song; I don't like the REMelodies of their second-last album, but I'm gonna say a nice word for the current album: effluvia. There, I said it.

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Idlewild used to be a perfectly acceptable band to shake yr whiteboy thang at an "alternative" club to whilst sipping your Snakebite and black. I mean, yeah, "I See Shapes When I Argue", that's as good as good. But, come on... if I wanted to listen to a pale imitation of "Automatic for the People", I'd buy REM's last album.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you gonna answer my question, or twitter like a miming dilettante some more?

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

metaphorical love = wank, no?

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom - I would killfile you to bits, if I could. ;)

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, Dom!, everyone knows, that the true arrival is knelled by: "...is OTM."

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm OTM here, though. I'm so OTM, I even scare myself.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"noone likes Muse"

Wrong. I and many others (mainly Russians) love them. Go back to silly drum programming instead of REAL drums, you silly man.

Great art? Muse! You fool...

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Stop talking about bands no-one has heard of like "Idlewild" and address the issue.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Who are Muse, again?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

They are great artists, scorned by the silly

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe the Russians like Muse cause Bellamy once bigged up Rakhmaninov in the NME, if memory serves. also, he doesn't like, what was it, he called J.S. Bach and Mozart something like 'mathematical' and boring, which is unfortunate.
mainly their sense of prog-lite, pomp and circumstance epic message rock mustn't appeal to critics, who lived through Yes?

scott n. (scott n.), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

oddly enough, any number of young, black-togged and bizzarely-bearded nu-metallers i've interviewed for kerrang! the past few months have been HUUUUUUGE ASSED Muse fans. i hate 'em tho; they sound like Sky, and when bellamy sits behind the piano, they sound like Queen if they were humourless goths.

sxxx

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i know a black/death metal geezer that's into Muse's (stylised?) theatrics: perhaps their sense of their own worth appeals to symphonic Nordic metal fans. it's not much of a leap from System of A Down to Muse after all. is Arnopp or Zell still at Kerrang!?
not read it for years.

scott n. (scott n.), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, he said the Mozart was "like the Steps of classical music". Which actually sounds great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Jamie, this "you silly man" shit has got to go. It's not even fucking funny, do you realize that? Oh, and as for your "opinions"? SCREW OFF.

Clarke B. (emily), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

apologies Dom, that is actually a great quote. :) so Beethoven is therefore the Eagles?

scott n. (scott n.), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

*sigh* "Great Art"? I think "true art" was the ridiculous notion you posited kid. And as for suggesting Muse as "great art", from where I'm sitting this comes across as litle better than a staggering oxymoron. "Address the issue" you say...

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

*Jamie, this "you silly man" shit has got to go*

No, YOU have got to go.

*I think "true art" was the ridiculous notion you posited kid*

Whatever.

*this comes across as litle better than a staggering oxymoron*

In your opinion, that is. Roger Fascist is a fascist. And a silly, silly man.

Jamie Thompson (Jamie), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting. For about a nanosecond. Your pronouncements are tautological, your methodolgy flatline, the framework of your argument duff, your digressions twee, your language childish, and even your insults unimaginitive. I tire of your lacklustre performance. You are a fool.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I recall Schoolly-D back in the day having a laugh at how people he'd just shot would squirm and twitch as they died. Mr Thompson is a bit like this. From trolls we here at ILM expect sophisticated, literate repartee and insults of striking originality, but all too often it deteriorates quickly into the lowest common denominator of "yah boo underpants." This is usually because the troll has not spent sufficient time working out the full implications of his persona.

Such is the case here. It's a pity. For a short time I imagined Mr Thompson to have some degree of wit and self-awareness in his assaults. But when challenged, he all too easily fell.

I will ask our manservant to escort him from the premises.

Muse suck. They're a nu-metal band pretending to be an 'indie' band so that Stereophonics fans will like them.

RJG plays: well, she SAYS they stole it
RJG plays: I doubt it

This entire review is PATHETIC!!! Everything about it reaked of some opinionated ass dumpling who knows absolutely nothing about music going off on a band who he has no logical reason to dislike. Obviously, not everyone is going to like Muse... but to question whether or not there really are any Muse fans is RIDICULOUS!!! I wonder how he feels about Muse being the first band to sell out the new Wembley Stadium... I wonder how he feels about Muse blowing every other band on the planet away with their live performances. To compare Muse to anyone is absolutely retarded, seeing as how no one can capture their grandure or outright pompousity. I love everything about Muse but am always open to INTELLIGENT opinions. I have read articles before where people have bashed Muse where I could at least recognize an ounce of intelligence in what was written... but anyone who calls "Endlessly" a rip off of "Everything In It's Right Place" is a know-nothing twat who probably couldn't tell the difference between The Beatles and The Butthole Surfers. Dave Queen is a certified ass goblin... go get some musical culture you tasteless swine.

Still not really tired of this

Muse have become fairly critically well-regarded in the last five years, ironically.

Critics go to shows, and Muse are incredible live

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 February 2008 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Therefore critics are incredible live.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 February 2008 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

And did she succeed?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

She doesn't like Radiohead!

Tape Store, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

Isn't poptimism Muse just consumer-level pomoRadiohead applied to contemporary pop culture? I'd think it'd be old hat in a college course.

Mordy, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I also found a Girl Talk fan who said that pop music was shit. College is b-a-n-a-n-a-s

Tape Store, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

I went to school with them. I'm Facebook friends with the bassist.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 1 September 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Speaking of studies, the fans of Muse in the same project as the fans of Grateful Dead, Kiss, Rush, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and DMB might have been an interesting study....
