We Don't Want to Know: The ILM All-Time Video Poll (discussion, etc.; deadline is Monday, March 14)

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

We do want to know--starting with whether there's enough interest to warrant a poll.

No need for a nominating thread; any video ever qualifies. Homemade videos are fine; I can think of two or three I'd include on my own list. My preference would be to stay away from straight live clips, but vote for those if you want--Hendrix at Woodstock, Bo Diddley on the TNT show, whatever. Usual caveat: if you vote for something that really stretches the definition of what a music video is, and you care about the results, you're probably better not to. (If you don't care about the results, which is usually the case with me, go ahead. I voted for Mad Men in the all-time movie poll.)

I'd say vote for...I don't know, somewhere between 10-25?

If the interest seems to be there, please have all lists in no later than three weeks from today: by Monday, March 14. My e-mail is sayhey AT rocketmail DOT com.

One request: if you want to link to videos on this thread, do so without the http://. As you know, threads with numerous embedded videos take forever to load.

I'm very interested but a nominations thread might be worthwhile for such an open-ended poll. Pretty daunting to vote without one!

Vinnie, Monday, 21 February 2022 05:11 (three years ago)

This is super hard.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 February 2022 05:55 (three years ago)

yeah i was thinking Directors Label stuff alone might take up a significant chunk of my ballot, but I would also love to vote for a ton of k-pop/j-pop and at least one my chemical romance video lol

Roz, Monday, 21 February 2022 06:44 (three years ago)

but there are just way too many videos i love outside of those categories as well

The Knife - Pass This On - I think this is my favourite video ever

paolo, Monday, 21 February 2022 08:48 (three years ago)

To clarify are TV performances e.g Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Future Islands on Letterman part of the poll or is it promo 'MTV' videos only?

Dan Worsley, Monday, 21 February 2022 12:49 (three years ago)

I'll probably end up stuffing ballot with Michael Gondry directed videos anyway.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 21 February 2022 12:51 (three years ago)

otm.

But there are some live concert vids I watched years ago that were good enough to stick with me. Bootsy Collins in DC, The Talking Heads in Rome…

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 21 February 2022 12:56 (three years ago)

Extra chances for ballot splitting cause most of the concerts are divided into separate songs.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 21 February 2022 12:57 (three years ago)

May be more work than you want, but you could split the categories into actual promo clips and live performances (concert/TV/etc).

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 21 February 2022 13:22 (three years ago)

Let's not fill this with live footage imo, keep it to the intentional artworks

My first problem is narrowing down how many Joanna Wang (well, okay, Robert Youngblood) videos to vote for

imago, Monday, 21 February 2022 13:23 (three years ago)

I vote two polls! The performance vid poll could be sidelined pending further motivation.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 21 February 2022 13:41 (three years ago)

If most people want to put performance clips (including Letterman/Sullivan appearances and such to the side, I'm fine with that.

a nominations thread might be worthwhile for such an open-ended poll

I can do that, it just seems like a lot of extra work for an all-time poll where everything is eligible (no performance clips stipulated).

clemenza, Monday, 21 February 2022 14:14 (three years ago)

If you need backup I could lend a hand although I have no behind the scenes experience in this arena.

intentional art is boring

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 21 February 2022 15:05 (three years ago)

lol fine, semi-intentional, you never quite know how a video's gonna work out after all

imago, Monday, 21 February 2022 15:08 (three years ago)

Viborg: thank you. If there's a general preference for a nomination list, maybe you could look after that on a Google Doc?

One thing that's true for me--and maybe this is self-evident, or maybe it's not true for most people--is that I have to really, really like a song to really, really like the accompanying video. If I don't love the song, the most I'll ever get from the video is "that's clever." An obvious (and old) example would be Weezer's "Buddy Holly" video. Conversely, rooted in how much I love the song, this homemade video for Liz Phair's "Divorce Song"--which is nothing, technically, but it deepens the song for me--would be on my list.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IktAMW2ui3I

clemenza, Monday, 21 February 2022 15:14 (three years ago)

No idea where to even start with this one. Most of my picks would be from the 80's and 90's, which maybe goes without saying (coinciding with the peak of the music video's relevance). I agree that it's important to "really really like the song", but I don't know how I'll deal with canonical picks like "Sledgehammer". Groundbreaking video, great song? Yes and yes. But it's hardly my favourite Peter Gabriel song, let alone one of my favourite songs ever. Plus I've seen the video so many times, I'm actually kind of bored with it. But you can't argue its importance.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 21 February 2022 15:31 (three years ago)

Without a doubt, this is my all-time favorite - "Can't Go Wrong Without You" by His Name Is Alive, directed by the Brothers Quay: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqxQ8H-nb_M
I saw this for the first time on MTV (120 Minutes), believe it or not.

ernestp, Monday, 21 February 2022 15:53 (three years ago)

i def think that performance videos a la last waltz or hendrix at monterey should not be in the same poll as an mtv-style music video

roflrofl fight (voodoo chili), Monday, 21 February 2022 15:58 (three years ago)

it’s very apples and oranges to me, and i can’t even begin to think about how i would narrow a list with both down or compare one to the other

roflrofl fight (voodoo chili), Monday, 21 February 2022 15:59 (three years ago)

oh nvm i think i misread the original post

roflrofl fight (voodoo chili), Monday, 21 February 2022 16:01 (three years ago)

The "Sledgehammer" video is a perfect example of one where I look at it and go "oh." Didn't mean anything to me then, and now it's like looking at hieroglyphics. (Not disputing its historical importance...which I never vote for in any kind of poll.)

No straight performance videos seems to be the preference. Performance inside a video with other video stuff going on--Blind Melon's "No Rain"--is fine. I'm sure there are many examples that blur the line, so make your own call.

clemenza, Monday, 21 February 2022 16:14 (three years ago)

Yeah, a lot of early promotional clips are just mimed performances, but I think they still count as "music videos" — they're simulations, played for a camera. Technically I guess lots of older TV shows were likewise lip-synched, but those still feel different — they're TV, but they're not "music videos" as a separate category.

Anyway, I love the poll idea.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 21 February 2022 16:32 (three years ago)

I'd count this promotional clip for "Walk on By" as very much an early music video:

There are a number of great ones like that from the era.

clemenza, Monday, 21 February 2022 16:51 (three years ago)

And is this now the nominations thread or do we want to start a separate one?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 21 February 2022 19:23 (three years ago)

Honestly don't know--we could try. (Send whatever to me using the rocketmail address in the opening post.)

Just use this as a nominations/discussion thread.

(Another thing I don't like about nominations is that you pretty much know everyone's ballot in advance via the nomination thread. Also, people end up voting for stuff not nominated all the time--I know I always think of a couple of things at the last minute.)

clemenza, Monday, 21 February 2022 19:25 (three years ago)

Admittedly I'm not super clear on the need for a sorted nominations list. This is the only comment I could find specifically advocating it:

I'm very interested but a nominations thread might be worthwhile for such an open-ended poll. Pretty daunting to vote without one!

― Vinnie, Monday, February 21, 2022 5:11 AM (fourteen hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

My understanding is that the nominations would help to provide suggestions for voting whether it's an unsorted thread or a sorted list, in a poll like this the structure provided by a sorted nominations list seems inessential. Maybe I'm missing something?

I would suggest we strongly recommend appending [Artist - Title] to links; aside from the archival value it helps to skim through the thread.

the Sledgehammer video was talked about above, something I never see mentioned is how similar bits of it are to this video by XTC for their song Funk Pop A Roll, made as part of a channel documentary in 1984:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnvO6lrZSxo

the Gabriel video is obviously much higher budget and elaborate (though I much prefer the Funk Pop A Roll video), but I wonder if that XTC video formed part of the inspiration? on the other hand, the guy who directed Sledgehammer also directed the video for Road To Nowhere by Talking Heads in 1985, and that also feature stop motion stuff but is less similar to the XTC video, so maybe they both came to it independently?

I think I'm realizing that most of the music videos that hold up for me are not necessarily ones that have some cool concept but capture or preserve some kind of essential aspect of the artist. The New Order clip I mentioned above is a good example -- Demme had a gift for bringing out the deeper personality of a band solely through capturing performance. This is also partly what I love about late 80s/early 90s hip hop videos. They were made for little money and had to carried by the charisma of the performers.

Just watched that Lana Del Rey video again - I noticed that the name of The Smithereens also appeared on the marquee with her name on it. That could be a nod to the quote from their song "Alone At Midnight" in the song's chorus.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 22 February 2022 00:50 (three years ago)

Viborg: sorry, out to a movie--thanks, that's fine. I'll send you board e-mail with a Google mail address--add me as an editor, and I'll try when I can to add songs.

It seemed to work...the first post you put up, I don't get the embeds, just the addresses.

Kenneth Anger - Kustom Kar Kommandos (= The Paris Sisters - Dream Lover)

There are a bunch of great should-have-been-videos in Anger's work, especially Scorpio Rising and Rabbit Moon. No problem if you want to vote for them, but for me that's something qualitatively different. As you can probably guess from my posting around here, my ballot would be 95% film sequences if I included those.

meisenfek, Tuesday, 22 February 2022 17:37 (three years ago)

A couple of homemade videos I'll probably vote for:

"I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," Wilco: youtube.com/watch?v=L1Nc6Kcj71w
"Roadrunner," Modern Lovers: youtube.com/watch?v=Gy88-5pc7c8

For scoring, I like to use an adaptation of Pazz & Jop. Vote for 10-25 videos (fewer or a few more if needed--please try not to go over 40). You get a total of 10 points per however many videos you list, with a maximum of 30 points per video.

So if you list 10, you get 100 points to split up; if you list 25, you've got 250 points; if you list 40, 400 points. But no one video can receive more than 30 points.

clemenza, Tuesday, 22 February 2022 18:40 (three years ago)

I'm going to try for another request here, an old ILM favorite, but I'm afraid this video is no longer is available. I'm looking for Jackie Chain ft Jhi Ali - Rolling Remix (not the version with Kid Cudi). I'm sure there used to be a video for this remix which featured the rappers themselves, although it's possible it wasn't the official video. It's apparently gone now -- anyone? I'm sure it's not the greatest video of all time regardless.

I think some of the Gainsbourg ones are Scopitones. That site doesn't mention Les Fauves, which I mentioned upthread (a pop-carnival surrealist delight). Also memorable: France Gall's Laisse tomber les filles, with, with sinister fast-motion classroom kissing pretty boy.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Thursday, 24 February 2022 04:07 (three years ago)

We discussed that Vikki Carr clip on one of the old YouTube threads, iirc we deduced it was shot somewhere in LA, possibly near the LA river(?).

Scopitone US was based in LA. Danny Whitten was a gopher there, and got to make this clip with his buddies Ralph & Billy. All three later hooked up with some Canadian hippie.

If anyone's ever looking for Weird Al on the spreadsheet, look under 'W,' not at the beginning--I took out the quotation marks, which is where he goes if you leave them in, and besides, he really is weird, so they're not necessary.

Think I've about reached the bottom of the rabbit hole here.

All official videos afaik:

Boogie Down Productions - My Philosophy
Butthole Surfers • Mexican Caravan
Carl Craig - Televised Green Smoke
Coldcut and Hexstatic - Timber
E-40 - Practice Lookin' Hard
Einstürzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
Golden Boy with Miss Kittin - Rippin Kittin
Ken Ishii - Extra
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
Photek - Ni Ten Ichi Ryu
Suicide - Frankie Teardrop
Swans - A Screw

Not sure how I feel about this one: Liquid Liquid - Cavern

This is a scene from a film featuring the song being performed: Astrud Gilberto With Stan Getz - Girl From Ipanema

And this is likely fan=made but it's good enough that I'm not sure: Can - Mushroom

The only era of recent music I didn't really cover was 2005-2015 but I suspect there's limited interest for any of this.

Quick question (for clemenza or anyone): Does this count as a video? www.youtube.com/watch?v=upsZZ2s3xv8

It is an animated short done by the NFB in Canada as part of a series called Canada Vignettes in the late 70s for which Kate and Anna McGarrigle recorded a version of an old(er) Canadian folk song.

Anyway, if it counts, I nominate: Kate and Anna McGarrigle - Log Driver's Waltz

Ballots can be submitted any time. There's a note upthread about how to score: you get a total of 10 points x songs listed (up to a maximum of 40) to split up however you want, with a maximum of 30 points for any one song.

25-song ballot = 250 points, maximum of 30 points for your #1.

Polite suggestion from someone just catching up on this thread... can a mod update the first post with details on the nominations and voting process? I've skimmed through the thread and managed to find the nominations spreadsheet and voting points system but still haven't yet found where to vote and if the deadline in the thread title is for noms or voting.

Meanwhile, assuming each vid is ~5 min, we're at 60+ hours of nominations! A lot to wade through here.

For voting, a list of 5-50, 10 points x videos listed to divide up how you want, maximum of 30 points for any one video.

10 videos listed = 100 points, 35 videos = 350 points, etc. If you hate math--reportedly, some people do--I can help you with the point distribution.

clemenza, Friday, 4 March 2022 14:34 (three years ago)

Putting together my ballot, it's becoming apparent how much worse videos age compared to the underlying song. I still get a nostalgia kick from some of these eighties videos, but they just don't hold a candle to the post-Gondry stuff.

Conversely, once YouTube made videos widely available again, there was a burst of creativity, where budget was less of a constraining factor.

enochroot, Friday, 4 March 2022 15:19 (three years ago)

Very thankful for this nomination process, people have listed a ton of videos I love that I'd completely forgotten about. I do think nostalgic 80s videos will make up a good deal of my ballot tho

Vinnie, Friday, 4 March 2022 16:04 (three years ago)

Glad it was useful.

it's becoming apparent how much worse videos age compared to the underlying song

For me, taking a look at stuff I loved 30 years ago hasn't moved the needle much--think I've found that, without exception, both the song and video have stood up extremely well.

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 4 March 2022 23:20 (three years ago)

hasn't moved the needle much

Exactly the kind of thing I complain about all the time in the annoying-phrases thread--caught in my own web of lies.

clemenza, Friday, 4 March 2022 23:23 (three years ago)

My ballot, I think, will consist of old videos that impressed me when I was young. What I find precious in a music video is its ability to create a world with minimal means; regardless of how technically accomplished modern videos can be, I don't think they're able to draw me into their worlds in the same way now.
I don't reject things just because they're recent, I appreciate a lot of modern movies. But so much of what I responded to in videos then was an unconscious mythology of music (and music-makers) that I'll never get back.
Still, I'll watch all the videos in the poll countdown and see if my perceptions change!

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 4 March 2022 23:56 (three years ago)

Looking at Saint Etienne's Neil cover to see how high I'd place it, I remembered this:

billstevejim, Saturday, 5 March 2022 06:02 (three years ago)

I was in college when MTV premiered in 1981. Only one of my friends had the channel, so he would record 2 hours at a time and we would watch them in an empty classroom.

The best videos back them were always the ones that had a surreal image, a camera move or a video effect I'd never seen before. Off the top of my head:

The Police, Wrapped Around Your Finger [dir. Godley & Creme] - It's in slow motion but the lips are still in sync.

Ultravox, The Thin Wall [dir. Russell Mulchahy] - Many arms burst through a wall to manhandle Midge Ure. Less impressive after I found out it was lifted from Repulsion.

Cabaret Voltaire, Sensoria [dir. Peter Care] - The camera starts at floor level, arcs up and over the singer and lands on the opposite side of the room, upside down.

The Art of Noise, Close (to the Edit) [dir. Zbigniew Rybczynski] - The stuttery jerky movement that I'm still not sure how it was done.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 5 March 2022 08:27 (three years ago)

If, like me, you have a list of 50 videos (500 points), here's a way to distribute the points:

Top 10 - 30/25/22/20/18/13/13/13/13/13
Second 10 - 11 points each
Third 10 - 9 points each
Fourth 10 - 7 points each
Last 10 - 5 points each

I'm going to use that--adds up to 500 points, and saves having to decide if number #36 is better than #37.

I thought I'd start a voting/scoring thread later tonight. It'll be informational, mostly a way to clarify and ask questions about how to score your ballot. Nominations will close, but this thread can still be for general comments, etc.

clemenza, Sunday, 6 March 2022 16:24 (three years ago)

Can we only vote for nominees? If so I'll try to get some more in.

Definitely not. If you remember something next week, just add it to your ballot, not a problem.

Came in to nom Tom Petty, Don't Come Around Here No More, but to our credit it's already there, so instead I'm nomming

Talking Heads, Burning Down the House

which inexplicably is not

Ever see Ken Burns' baseball film? He uses "Burning Down the House" for Reggie's 3-HR World Series game--fantastic.

Might be helpful to between "Wuthering Heights" videos:

trails version
trees version, or Versions 1 & 2, respectively. Not sure which is more celebrated? The former has more YT views.

They're both designated as official, and they're very different, so in that case, two separate entries would make sense. We'll see how people vote--if they don't designate which one, we'll add all votes together.
