LADYTRON ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD

I love Ladytron. I think they're the best band in the world.

This isn't a question as such.

alexfack (alexfack), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

No. No they're not. They're good, though.

david h (david h), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

no. like a couple of singles I've heard.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

In your world, maybe.

JS Williams (js williams), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Roger and Justin from Becks band and Air are the crack studio musicians on the new rec. Ladytron = Steely Dan of nu-synth?

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

604 (more than the new one):Lali Puna-lite?

david h (david h), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladytron = Steely Dan of nu-synth?

I'd say that goes to LP since they're smooth that way. Ladytron = Bliss Band?

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The Faint are obv The Eagles then

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

they're on of my fave BANDS around at the moment thats for sure

however they need to improve in some areas - mainly, their live performances (i've heard too many people say how shit they are live, and these are big Ladytron lovers) - they also need to gig MORE

it took them ages to get their website sorted out, and its still not that great - it could be better for a band like this

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 November 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

These are fair and reasonable points but all tend to overlook the fact that LADYTRON ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.

alexfack (alexfack), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

also, it wouldn't kill them to spend a little more time on some of the lyrics. i still love em tho.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladytron are a more femme Komputer.

(please someone tell me they remember Komputer)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hah. I remember Komputer, I got a couple of their singles from bargain bins and I keep seeing the album in them too now, so if it's worth getting then let me know. It's always just slightly more than I want to pay for it, especially since I found the singles a bit dull.

(Ladytron are much better too. Er, in my opinion.)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh lord Komputer.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, well it was, at one time, pretty easy to find the album for less than a dollar.

"Beeel Gaytz BEEEL GAYTZ BEEEELLLL GAAAAAAYYYYYTTTTZZZZ"

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely it is "Ladytron IS" not "Ladytron ARE" though?

, Thursday, 28 November 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

damn septics with their lame-o abuse of language. more than one person in band=are...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 28 November 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Less than two bands=is...

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 28 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Ladytron are currently rocking my life. Maybe right now they are indeed the best band in the world.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 17 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Any band can be the best band in the world for an afternoon.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

...especially if alcohol is involved.

rainman (rainman), Saturday, 17 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they might still be the best band in the world. I have a unbelievably colossal emotional investment in the next album and am anxious that it nudges them into glorious exciting twisty new shapes. I am relatively confident that it will be so.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty bored of 'Light And Magic' now but the 'Softcore Jukebox' is a great great compilation. i wouldn't mind hearing their 'live soundtrack' to Tron still.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what¿

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Light and Magic a lot, it's been one of my most-listened-to albums from the past two years.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Had my first three listens to Velocifoofoo today. After a few weeks with the "Ghost" remixes. For a band for whom I've purchased their complete works (I think) I don't know much about them at all. Which I realized is an incredible complement to how much I enjoy their music. At their worst, the giddy cheap thrill I got from Republica. At their best, everything kind everyone said about Siouxsie and Gary Newman, only better. Sure, there's throwaway tracks, but the singles are lush and effortless.

bendy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

I'm surprised how little attention their new album is getting

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

As always.

'Velocifero' is not their best on the first listen, but still very good. There are a few filler tracks in the middle unfortunately, but the last two songs are brilliant.

zeus, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

It never reaches the brilliance of Witching Hour but it's defibitely a grower

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

LADYTRON ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD (AT THE MOMENT, YES, ABSOLUTELY)

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think I'll get this on vinyl

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think digipack would put me off this, although for other things it certainly has. Seems too many people use digipacks as a way to avoid putting effort into liner notes and so on... which is unfortunate...

do we have a digipacks C/D thread yet? if not, we should.

asey, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

there was a great thread re the downfalls of crap packaging but i can never find the bugger.

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ladytron are also the first band for whom I've purchased their whole catalog as digital downloads.

fwiw i don't think i've ever heard a ladytron song? and i'm pretty sure the dudes that threatened my friend hadn't either. protip: don't wear a shiny, silvery t-shirt in rural montana that has the word "lady" on it

Ask him what's the best band in the world?

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, agreed with Tuomas.

ilxor, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

ask him whether the next album is gonna as awesome as the previous two - also if they're gonna keep adding guitars to their mix

baaderonixx, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

Was definitely going to ask him more about that, as well as the Christina thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

I have nothing to ask, but I have spun up Velocifero, and it remains as glorious as ever.

Tell him that, if you want!

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I don't find it as good as 'Witching Hour' (how could it be) but it's definitely solid. It seems to me Ladytron are summarizing in high speed Depeche Mode's evolution (from cutesy synth pop to a sinister grinding monolith)

baaderonixx, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha, nicely phrased. I saw them live two years back opening for NIN in London and they had pretty clearly settled into said latter status. Crowd loved 'em!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

^ Agree with every word (except early Depeche Mode >>>>> early Ladytron, natch).

Yes.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Man, they killed. Reminded me about what Chuck said (I paraphrase) about disco rocking harder than metal.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah they are ridiculously great live these days -- I caught them two years back opening for NIN in London and that pretty much made me a full on believer instead of a casual fan.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

They were great in Belfast a few months ago as well. Burnin' Up and Destroy Everything You Touch were godly.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

The only things that would have made it better are both in this clip (coincidentally recorded in Houston in '06 either at the same venue or down the street @ tha Meridian)

A. Shocking Blue cover
B. The vocals a little higher in the mix

when i was at uni in liverpool, (circa '03-05) they had a club night called "evol" in this little basement club. the guy members would dj and they had loads of cool guest djs like ivan smagghe and mark moore. had this great secret after-hours party atmosphere.

and they'd always be up for the odd convo about music or whatever, real chill fellas.

max arrrrrgh, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

i think Destroy Everything You Touch holds up fabulously as one of the best electro songs of the last 5 years or so. they kind of invented that sound and it's been ripped off so many times it's exhausting now but they never got much credit for it. innit always the way though?

I wanted to like Ladytron, and I went to see them at the Leeds festival. Unfortunately, I had taken an anonymous pill I bought for £5 from a stranger, and spent the entire set hiding behind a pillar, convinced that if the band caught sight of me they would command the audience to tear me limb from limb, and quite possibly shoot lasers from their eyes. I have not summoned up the courage to listen to them since.

Well I guess Ladytron are only doing to Douglas P what he did to Oscar Brown jr, who didn't get credit when Doug pinched, via Jim Jones' People Temple Choir, the lyrics from his song "Brown Baby", recorded by Nina Simone...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBfO4-PVQwA

Brown Baby - Oscar brown jr

Brown baby
Brown baby
As you grow up
I want you to drink from the plenty cup
I want you to stand up
Tall and proud
I want you to speak up
Speak up clear and cloud

Brown baby
Brown baby
As years roll by
Walk with your head held high
I want you to live by
Live by the justice code
I want you to walk down
Walk down the freedom road

Brown baby
Brown baby
Now baby
Lie away
Lie away sleeping
Lie away here in my arms
While your mommy and daddy protect you
And keep you save from harm

Brown baby
Brown baby
It makes me so glad
That you will have things
I've never had
When out of men's hearts
All the hate is hurled
You're gonna live
You're gonna live in a better world

For some reason I was thinking about this, and I realized that since she was in the water for presumably most of the shoot, the pool chemicals would probably override her natural, er, "essences", which would be reason enough to get it cleaned.

Light & Magic isn't a bad album. Still sounds fresh today, with all the minimal wave, cold wave, druggy stuff going on lately. It's weird that after nearly 20 years, the 80s retro thing hasn't died out yet.

604!

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 14 April 2016 13:42 (ten years ago)

I really Ladytron but out of their five albums, I only really rate two of them. Witching Hour is close to being a perfect record and 604 is very strong, apart from those they're frustratingly patchy on record.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 14 April 2016 14:42 (ten years ago)

Witching Hour is close to being a perfect record

put this album on 34 mins ago cos of this thread revival, not heard it in years - and even then i only listened to it a couple of times.
it's the only album of ladytrons i have.
will be playing it a lot more often from hereon.
hits a lot of my sweet spots

mark e, Thursday, 14 April 2016 14:48 (ten years ago)

velocifero and gravity the seducer are also underrated

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 14 April 2016 15:43 (ten years ago)

I agree, I listened to Gravity The Seducer the other night and think there's plenty of good stuff on it... 'Moon Palace' probably one of my favourite Ladytron tracks! I like the first two albums, but it's hard to argue with the idea that they came into their own and started realising their potential on Witching Hour

WHERE'S JIM!? (Turrican), Wednesday, 20 April 2016 21:51 (ten years ago)

Yes! About fucking time ... what did people think of the two Marnie solo records that came out during the hiatus?

Full of bile and Blue Nile denial (Turrican), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:48 (eight years ago)

I liked them, the first better than the second. that said, I can't listen to the record anymore -- I got a lot of angry email about what I thought was a positive review, and every time one of the songs comes up on shuffle I'm reminded of it and have to turn it off

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:00 (eight years ago)

Nice to have them back although, come on, this sounds exactly like Broadcast!

daavid, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 18:19 (eight years ago)

Cool, I've missed them. And I didn't know about the solo albums so now I've got something to listen to while I wait for the new record to come out.

sounds kinda velocifero-y to me.

KevRus, Friday, 2 March 2018 21:03 (eight years ago)

Prefer the album teaser to the actual single, but am pretty stoked nonetheless

Google Atheist (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 2 March 2018 21:59 (eight years ago)

ok thank god the album teaser had me worried, if I want to listen to Broadcast then I listen to Broadcast or any of the 100 bands that sound like them already

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Saturday, 3 March 2018 00:32 (eight years ago)

update: this is growing on me even more, it's easily the best thing anyone from ladytron has done in years

New single!

I still need to listen with proper speakers but so far it sounds great! It reminds me of Propaganda.

daavid, Friday, 17 August 2018 12:51 (seven years ago)

Agreed, this sounds really good.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 17 August 2018 12:55 (seven years ago)

Yes! I've been looking forward to this. Marnie's solo albums have both been very good, mind.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 17 August 2018 13:12 (seven years ago)

Slight adoption of the retro outrun synthwave vibe in there somewhere? Quite like this

the article don, Friday, 17 August 2018 14:32 (seven years ago)

yeah this is great

five months pass...

the new album is out, and it's...a trip.

the highs are high, the lows are low (sometimes very low), and the overall production is...uhh...weird.

but I'm kinda digging it. 'Deadzone,' 'You've Changed,' and 'Paper Highways' are pretty fun.

KevRus, Saturday, 2 February 2019 06:46 (seven years ago)

The leaked tracks really didn’t impress. Still, I pledged to get the physical edition so looking forward to it. Love the cover art

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 2 February 2019 07:44 (seven years ago)

ok I've warmed up to this a lot, and I now think it's actually pretty fantastic. Like 'Witching Hour,' this feels like a quintessentially 'winter' album, and I'm here for it.

KevRus, Thursday, 7 February 2019 17:49 (seven years ago)

unsurprisingly, I love it, it's like velocifero but even angrier

the album art is also amazing

theorizing your yells (katherine), Thursday, 7 February 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

this is sounding really good

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 18:39 (seven years ago)

I keep thinking "oh this must be the big triumphant fuck-off closer" and then seeing there are more songs to go

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 18:45 (seven years ago)

end to end bangers

good record

nxd, Monday, 11 February 2019 11:01 (seven years ago)

It's a grower. Some good hooks but is it me or is this record brick-walled to death? Pretty disappointing since the music often blurs into a flat mush.
Song wise it feels like a slight throwback to the pre-Witching Hour period. This could have come out after Light & Magic

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 09:09 (seven years ago)

this.
I have tried several times to give this a whole listen through, but its just way too painful.
hopefully its just the digital promo, and things are better on release, as this album sounds really bad.
shame, there are some cracking songs hidden in there.

mark e, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 09:44 (seven years ago)

I know "it's thematically appropriate" is a cop-out but in this case it is kind of thematically appropriate

fwiw the best track here is "deadzone," up there with "silent shout" in terms of songs that embody/address trauma

theorizing your yells (katherine), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 15:48 (seven years ago)

a solid 7.7 from p4k!

KevRus, Friday, 15 February 2019 18:55 (seven years ago)

Omg this is wonderful! End to end bangers is right.

Late listening to the new one but why are they so good???? My god, we don't deserve Ladytron!

OK maybe not "Paper Highways."

Saw them live the other day and they were excellent. Sound was really beefed up, might have been the venue maybe, but they were really powerful.

I found their last couple of albums utterly forgettable but this new single is sounding good:
