quite the expected jump

Burnin' was always my favourite video of theirs for the cameos and I particularly loved that smooth stop-start effect with the fire trucks - that technique being part of a surge in similar trendy effects in other music videos in the run up to The Matrix. Love the Fresh video too really wish they would re-up these remastered (as they have done for Around The World).

I am quite shocked that out of 30 ballots Alive 2007 only received 8 votes...but that 5 of those were #1s. Are there people who haven't heard it? Or did a bunch of people limit their ballots to studio albums?

Around The World is not only my favorite Daft Punk video, it might be my favorite video ever. But Da Funk is up there as well. I can't really explain it, it's like they are amazing childhood memories that don't really exist.

Discovery was my #1 (of the decade?). We just played it at parties with friends over and over for years. I could've voted for every track.

Paul Williams worked with the duo at Henson Recording Studios, the former studio of A&M Records where he had worked previously, including his compositions for Jim Henson's films featuring the Muppets, such as "Rainbow Connection". He also stated that the song he penned was to be sung from the point of view of an unidentified first person, setting the emotion, but the lyrics came from the music itself. Paul Williams said that he felt vulnerable while writing the record, and said he writes best when he is allowed to be honest and vulnerable, a situation that Daft Punk nurtured. He also stated that his sobriety added a sense of wonder to the song he wrote, as every day for him being sober has been wonderful compared to his prior life of excess.

Of the entries so far I only voted for High Fidelity and Motherboard, but these are all pretty great. Hadn't heard several of them before.

Motherboard is one of the more restrained tracks on RAM

Went for a different Le Knight Club track than the two that have shown up. Their music is understated and repetitive in a way I don’t entirely get

Interesting results today. I had no idea how well the RAM tracks would do, but I thought Touch would be higher.

I should have probably voted for Derezzed. I remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away. I also remember the disappointment at hearing the rest of the Tron soundtrack a few weeks later.

Probably would have voted for Robot Rock if it had been two minutes shorter. It suffers the same problem I have with most of that album.

I've not heard many of their remixes although recently I did hear their remix of Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out at work Which they obviously spent only a few minutes on.

definitely a great idea to open up the poll to any/all Bangalter/de H-C tracks. hurrah and thanks to Bee and nashwan!

voted for "Call On Me" very high (the Together version is so so good, totally superior to Eric Prydz's later rip of it), "Mirage", "Nightcall" and "Too Long / Steam Machine". despite the name of "Too Long / Steam Machine" it's based more around the synth line from Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" than any Daft Punk track, it's distinctly its own thing

none of their remixes really stood out to me at all when putting together my ballot

"Touch" might have been my one RAM vote. Paul Williams was a great "get" for what they were trying to accomplish.

Great poll so far. I’m on vacation with my family otherwise I’d be posting more.

Daftendirekt was one of my only Homework votes. I’ve never fully locked in with that album (tho the videos help make the case for it TBH, so thanks for posting them in this poll).

That said, I will never forget the moment when I first heard Daftendirekt and the beat dropped in a completely different place w/r/t the opening sample than I was expecting. I’ve never been able to recreate that feeling re-listening to it but I remember it so vividly I couldn’t help but vote for it.

Motherboard is wonderful, and Omar Hakim’s performance is unbelievable. I always hear its sublimely melancholy arpeggio coda propelled by Hakim as Daft Punk’s requiem for genre formerly known as post rock. And I will always be here for it.

I really wasn't sure what to expect with the votes for RAM. When it came to voting I had this realisation that there aren't really any songs I dislike on there. I had Lose Yourself To Dance high and I know some people rate that as one of the low points of the album. No idea if it'll place.

Enjoying this, the albums results were very much as expected but some nice surprises in the tracks. I've had 4 place so far, and agonised over Derezzed for ages but cut it at the last minute.

Robot Rock is the only HAA track I would have considered voting for, but I agree with kitchen person that it outstays its welcome. The 'Maximum Overdrive' version on the single is surely a piss-take as it's longer still and never drops, just builds and resets.

xp I don't like "Lose Yourself to Dance" either but I bet someone has made an enjoyable remix of it (not that I feel like seeking it out). There's a germ of a great song in it

11 years have passed since the last public appareance of the Daft Punk duo (ignoring the grammys) , this time as a surprise guest in the Madison Square Garden, with his ex Darlin' partner Laurent Brancowitz, for just 20 minutes, bringing back memories of the begining of the band.
Every single scene, every single moment were managed to be upscaled and corrected, even rebuild into 60fps if it were possible, this way the concert would look like if it happened yesterday.
The audio have several filters and some trickery to keep up at the level of the performance.

Yeah, it's especially apparent in their teen-male-gaze-y merch ads, and in things like both(!) of the "Club Soda" videos. Plus they infamously said they moved from the rock scene to dance clubs because it was a better opportunity to meet sexy women.

I do think their choice of male vocalists has always been on the androgynous end, soundwise. Maybe because Thomas & Guy-Man don't have very deep voices and their vocalists are stand-ins for themselves.

Fragments Of Time is my favourite song on RAM and was my number four. It's just perfect.

Catching up with the results from today. Voted for Fragments Of Time (as mentioned), Lose Yourself to Dance, Giorgio and Give Life Back to Music. Really can't see anything else making it from RAM apart from Get Lucky.

Surprised to see both the Weeknd songs here. I quite like I Feel It Coming, but didn't even think of including it on my list.

I'm a bit disappointed Short Circuit was so low. It was my number two. It was the first song that convinced me there was more to Discovery than just the singles.

Really enjoying the results and especially looking forward to listening through all these songs when the poll ends. It's going to be an amazing playlist.

I'm coming very late to this party. I've been really under the weather the last two days, but will try to follow this live today although I might not be able to comment much.

I will say so far I'm surprised "Giorgio" isn't higher, it feels like a big highlight on the album, although I did place "Fragments Of Time" and another RAM song higher on my ballot. I will also add a "too low" for "Too Long" which is just phenomenal, but so is the rest of Discovery so I get it.

I'm glad the better of the Weeknd song is higher and we're probably not getting anymore HAA songs right? Or maybe "The Prime Time Of Your Life" will make it. I've rarely been as disappointed by a comeback single as when "Robot Rock" came out.

I hope the title track from HAA makes it!

The music video for this track shows a rave taking place in an alley. Police officers suddenly arrive to break up the party. While several people are rounded up, a young woman who looks to be captured notices a stain on an officer's shirt. This triggers a flashback beginning with a tomato seed being planted, then sprouting, then harvested and then packaged. The packages are eventually transported to a grocery store where a lady selects the tomatoes to take home with her. As she is preparing tomato sauce, subtitles accurately instruct the viewer on the recipe for making the sauce for spaghetti. The lady places the prepared meal into a tupperware container. The officer from earlier in the video appears with the meal in his squad car. He dribbles the tomato sauce onto his shirt while eating it and creates the stain. This brings the flashback to the beginning of the video. When the officer looks down at his stained shirt and is distracted, the young woman gains the opportunity to flee. Someone appears on a platform above and pulls her to safety.

My favorite Homework track, by a mile. It's got such a muted, menacing undertow to it.

Voyager is a total jam. My #3. I feel like Fred Falke’s entire career is in this track.

As for Get Lucky, the track was an event. The teaser campaign—the SNL ad, the Bonaroo(?) video snippet where it was later revealed Thomas and Guy-Manuel were in the audience watching—was so fucking exciting. After a long layoff, you had Nile Rodgers playing a classic rhythm part, a vocoder bit that was just mind bogglingly funky and a bunch of mystery about what else the song would consist of. Plus, there were like 100 fan versions derived from the 20 seconds or so they were made public.

If the actual released version never quite lived up to the hype of the teasers—tho I do think the single mix is pretty great—it doesn’t change the fact that this was a masterful thing in so many ways. So many Daft Punky ways.

The blonde girl in the video is Catherine Kellner born October 1970. The video was shot in 1998 and was directed by Roman Coppola, Daft Punk and a few others. The DJ is none other than legendary DJ Paul Johnson from Chicago, of Chicago House music fame. Both Bangalter and De Homem-Christo of Daft Punk make cameos in this video, along with legendary Roger Sanchez. This video is of legends back when the rave scene was fun, cool and full of responsible party goers.

Human After All was my #2. Whatever you think of HAA—and I have always liked more of it than most seem to—the title track still feels to me like one of their most focused, with an absolutely incredible build. Were I to have seen them live, I’m not sure there’s another track I’d have rather heard.

it looks like most of the individual #1s are clustered in the top 5

I was trying to guess which one missed the Top 5 and "One More Time" was my pick. I only had it at 18 on my ballot, but I probably should've put it higher. It's the only one of the big ones I've kind of tired of. But it's still an incredible album opener.

RSD prep at work meant I couldn't play along today. Excellent results. No complaints at all really. Big surprise at Instant Crush making it but it was on my list. It wouldn't sound out of place on Comedown Machine aka the second best Strokes album. Get Lucky at 11 seems about right. It's strange to think it won our poll for that year. I doubt it'll do as well when we finally do our 2010s poll. Same for the album.

Did every song from Discovery make the top 60 then? Hoping Digital Love is number one, but any of those songs would be worthy.

I guess the backlash is warranted for a song that was as hyped as "Get Lucky", but goddamn if that song song didn't go straight to my amygdala the first time I heard the teaser clip.

As much as I then preferred BJ (and might still), their super-sized tracks sound a lot more dated now than DP's.

i want to attribute the canonization to the fact that Homework had such self confidence and swagger for a debut album
but in reality it was likely Discovery which was the beginning of them abandoning some of the directions Homework pursued

but did they ever have anything as subtle as Revolution 909? i wish they did

“Nymphae Song” was my only Le Knight Club track on my ballot, think it’s the best one of the bunch, although “Boogie Shell” is pretty great too. “Holiday On Ice” is good but really too similar to “Around The World”, might as well be called a remix of that.

I didn’t vote for any of the mashups. Enjoyable but so many DJs have made excellent mashups in livesets and bootlegs - the Stuntmasterz mashup of “Holiday” and “Music Sounds Better With You” would probably beat all of the Alive ones for me.

Just realised, “Paris By Night” and “Shock Rock” not even making top 75, wow.

So One More Time is #6? That feels right to me, as it didn’t make my ballot. I can certainly appreciate that it’s a classic and worthy of belonging in the upper echelons of the DP canon. But from the first time I heard it, the song has always felt like the most one dimensional and transparent play for the dance floor (compared even to Homework) in their catalogue.

I'd call even some of their best songs one-dimensional but strong enough in that dimension to stand repeated listens

At this point it sounds like it’s been done a million times, in 1998 it sounded like it came from another dimension.

I'm going through that top 75 giving all of the tracks that didn't make my ballot another listen - wow that DJ Mehdi remix is a total banger. Still baffled by the non-placement of the Bangalter Rock Shock remix, it was a big hit during the prime Daft Punk era, do people really dislike it that much?

I don't remember it from the time but having watched that video, which is tbf a sub optimal way to experience the track, I can say that yes I do dislike it that much

I will add to the MSBWY praise, even though it hasn't placed yet. It was so so huge when it came out, at least where I'm from. It was kind of like Homework but slightly poppier and it just hit the perfect spot. I feel like One More Time tried to build on that and went slightly overboard.

I can't remember if Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger was my number one or if Around The World was, but good to see them both right up there. Like many people, Da Funk was obviously the first of theirs I heard (read about it 95, but didn't actually hear it till early 96) and was another instant favourite.

Really enjoyed revisiting all the Roulé & Crydamoure catalogue as part of the voting process, such a shame that no legitimate streams/downloads exist. There's a lot of contemporaneous French house / filter disco that is even more forgotten - thinking of Pro-Zak Trax, Fiat Lux, the Motobass album - which is worth digging up.

HOLY CRAP - I did not expect my #1 Digital Love to be the overwhelming fav. You peeps all have great taste.

That song just has everything: nostalgic yet futuristic and cutting edge, emotes that first crush feel, has an absolutely transcendent instrumental house beat chorus, and features the most epic fucking guitar/vocoder funky solo breakdown ever. I made a booboo and should have voted the video as my #1 too, but ah well, this makes up for it. To me, this is Daft Punk's best song by leaps and bounds, and is sung by them too iirc. Just captures everything about them that I love x10 and is the towering decadence of production and execution I missed on Human After All. And it slaps. Hard.

Cranking up the discography made for a great Friday/Saturday here. When the playback got to Digital Love I had classic frisson - goosebumps and lump in throat. An amazing song whose power definitely does not diminish with time.

My daughter had to endure my ramblings about French teenagers making Chicago House. They are one of the best of all time and the best of the best truly sets the standard for everything else I listen too.

Now to re-listen to the '96 Even Further live set and '99 Dalton Expo rave - Thomas on three turntables for two hours under one red light bulb. The latter is one of my most cherished musical memories.

I like that the middle of One More Time is completely suspended and focused on Romanthony’s vocals. The charisma of Romanthony’s voice in it is second only to that of Benjamin Diamond’s in Music Sounds Better With You

Bangalter remarked that “the break is so long it's not even the break. The song itself is the breakdown."

Hated how long that break was the first time I heard it but it's my favorite part of the song now

That song just has everything: nostalgic yet futuristic and cutting edge, emotes that first crush feel, has an absolutely transcendent instrumental house beat chorus, and features the most epic fucking guitar/vocoder funky solo breakdown ever.

Like many people, Da Funk was obviously the first of theirs I heard (read about it 95, but didn't actually hear it till early 96) and was another instant favourite.

First heard it on the superb Laurent Garnier Essential Mix in late 1995 and to this day still think John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 is going to come in at the end

Missed the poll as I was on holiday, will spend the day going through it.

Well it was a shame not to follow along in real time but seems like a fun poll with great images, thanks Bee OK and nashwan.

My hastily cobbled together ballot, I see my #1 of Aerodynamic generated zero discussion - ok it doesn't have the emotional depth of Digital Love or One More Time or Too Long or (pick any other song from Discovery) but that sick guitar sound is like crack to me.

12 minutes of bliss. I wish they would just release the full helmet-less Mayan Theater show from 1997 already. This one is fantastic and it's great the band is finally releasing some of this stuff.
