THE LONELIEST TIME 💌 Oct 21. I’m quite fascinated by loneliness. It can be really beautiful when you turn it over and look at it. Just like love, it can cause some extreme human reactions.

well the new single "beach house" is quite the pivot from "western wind". just about stays on the right side of quirky i think. insanely sticky chorus - it's giving aqua

i wish she didn't give the quirkiest lines to some random men, i think she'd sell "i've got a lake house in canada and i'm probably gonna harvest your organs" a lot better!

uberweiss, Thursday, 4 August 2022 15:47 (two years ago)

hmm this is mediocre

ufo, Thursday, 4 August 2022 22:07 (two years ago)

Where are y'all located? It's not out in US Eastern yet :(

J. Sam, Thursday, 4 August 2022 23:07 (two years ago)

I thought "Western Wind" was hinting that the album was going in a more chill direction, but now this one... Aqua is a good comparison. Catchy but pretty lightweight

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 00:19 (two years ago)

I'll be honest, my expectations were lowered once I saw the album art. Haven't heard Beach House yet, and I'm still unenthused by Western Wind, so I'm holding a wait-and-see position.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 02:30 (two years ago)

Yeah, I'm not sure about this one. Weird to hear her come out with such a weak chorus.

Aqua is a good comparison

You have my attention.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:48 (two years ago)

Can’t see the Aqua comparison. Sounds like a decent but not great CRJ track.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 5 August 2022 09:58 (two years ago)

there's a plastic, uber-catchy, 90s europop vibe to the chorus that reminded me of something like aqua

uberweiss, Friday, 5 August 2022 10:10 (two years ago)

Oh it def reminds me of them, the europop vibe. Also male/female vocals with quirky lyrics

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 10:27 (two years ago)

She comes out with bad songs sometimes. Party for One was a rough introduction to the Dedicated era for me. I was very relieved when it didn't actually end up on the record. I liked Cut to the Feeling at first but it really is just a chorus, isn't it? Let's Be Friends had that stupid dick joke/laugh in the middle. What were you thinking, Ms. Jensen?

Anyway, I don't think this is one of her bad ones! It definitely sounds musically out of character as far as her past few records. It's not like, sophisticated Carly. But I think it's a fun, funny song. If I have a criticism of it, it's that at 2:30 it gets in and out too quickly, much like the 2:41 Want You In My Room from Dedicated. I really think it could have used one more verse about boys number 5 and 8 or something. I really like the guy background singers on the chorus and bridge. So yeah, I'm on Team Beach House.

peace, man, Friday, 5 August 2022 11:19 (two years ago)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 5 August 2022 12:06 (two years ago)

Thought you meant her cover of "Last Christmas", Brad, until I looked it up. The lyrics of "It's Not Christmas Til Someone Cries" have put me off wanting to hear the song

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 12:25 (two years ago)

I'm not even a scrooge about Christmas music, but yeah, It's Not Christmas Til Somebody Cries is a stinker.

peace, man, Friday, 5 August 2022 12:30 (two years ago)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 5 August 2022 13:55 (two years ago)

don't even hate the song as much as some of you but if the song works in context, then i'd be worried about the album

Murgatroid, Friday, 5 August 2022 14:43 (two years ago)

This sounds more like Black Eyed Peas than Aqua and it sucks.

Hope Western Wind is a better indication of what the album sounds like.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 August 2022 15:19 (two years ago)

xp Well, the next track is about what gets done with those organs

Vinnie, Friday, 5 August 2022 15:20 (two years ago)

Listening again and it’s worse than Black Eyed Peas. It sounds like a DNCE song.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 August 2022 15:39 (two years ago)

This is giving me deja vu to the time Taylor Swift released ME! as the lead single for Lover
(Beach House is better than that, but I was hoping for more of a Warm Blood vibe for this album)

enochroot, Friday, 5 August 2022 18:54 (two years ago)

That was disappointing. It doesn't flow - the chorus grinds to a halt with "I'm probably going to hurt your feelings" and then the song seems to start again. It's just irritatingly stop-start. The middle eight doesn't work. It has surprisingly little Carly Rae Jepsen in it.

I enjoyed "I Want You In My Room" because it flowed well, it had some clever chords, and the production was retro without being overpowering. The chorus was like a one-two punch - it came in two parts, with the second part acting like a bonus chorus, a pleasant surprise. In contrast "Beach House" has a weak single-part chorus that just brings the song to a halt.

It has nothing to do with Aqua. It's not in the same league as Aqua. Aqua was genius. You, "Beach House", are no Aqua. If anything this song reminded me of how well-written "Happy Boys and Girls" was. To this day I still can't tell if the melancholic undercurrent running through that song was deliberate was real or exists only inside my head.

I still have faith in Carly Rae Jepsen but I fear she has been led astray. I'm not suggesting she should be kidnapped and forced to work with Mark Ronson. Kidnapped is such a loaded word. Enticed, with cheese.

New article.

https://crackmagazine.net/article/profiles/carly-rae-jepsen-new-album-the-loneliest-time-western-wind-beach-house-cover-story/

Despite the more maudlin theme, The Loneliest Time is wide-ranging. While her 2015 hit album Emotion was embedded in 80s synth-pop and its polished follow-up Dedicated mainly took its influence from sultry 70s disco, lately Jepsen has been less conscious of the decades she’s been moving between. “I had the playground of all the eras to jump from, and this was more just writing from the heart, in whatever direction the songs wanted to go,” she explains of the new album. She was also more intentional about the lyrical content not just being about a boy or nursing a crush. Instead, she became more self-reflective and analytical of her own behaviours. “It excited me to have those moments of flirtation on the new album, but also broaden the spectrum of what the subject of a pop song was allowed to be,” she declares.

The Loneliest Time sees the pop star breaking the mould again. Jepsen’s insatiable curiosity is what’s helped her remain a creative force, and on this record, that meant mixing the wistful 80s pop of Belinda Carlisle with horn-flanked funk numbers and victorious disco jaunts. But it was also important for her to not be seen as one-dimensional. For instance, recent single Beach House is the antithesis of the soothing ambience of Western Wind. One of the singer’s most playful tracks, it’s a campy pop anthem that finds Jepsen and her bandmates larping as boys going on bad dates. “This is a song for the girls!” she asserts with a wide grin. It also features some of her most absurd lyrics. “It was the shortest straw-pull for who had to sing, ‘I’ve got a lake house in Canada, I’m going to come harvest your organs,’” she snickers about the song’s lyrics. But while the track veers toward being lighthearted, there are harsh realities within it. “I wanted to highlight that feeling when you’re disenchanted after being on a dating app for a hot minute to be like, ‘That guy’s just going to… he’s going to wreck me.’”

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 12 August 2022 16:53 (two years ago)

Listening to it again I often wonder what it was like for OG Gary Numan fans circa 1982 or so. I wasn't turned on to Gary Numan's vibe until the late 1990s, just when he finally got his mojo back, but from essentially 1981 until the one-two punch of Sacrifice in 1994 and Exile in 1997 he was a nobody. I have the impression that by the late 1980s his OG fans had moved on, but there was a period post-Telekon when he was in theory a major pop star, albeit only in the UK, but with an increasingly limited mainstream appeal.

And yet his fans stuck with him, because they could remember the first time they saw "Are Friends Electric" on the Old Grey Whistle Test or whatever. They could remember how it made them feel and they wanted to recapture that. Just like the first time I had a Dragonflight and a click frenzy in Cookie Clicker. I will never recapture that feeling, but I remember that I had it. I remember what it was like. I eventually found out I could maximise my clicks by sacrificing grandmas, but it didn't feel the same.

I came to the Carly Rae Jepsen music machine much later in life, but I clearly remember the point in time when it dawned on me that "Call Me Maybe" was one of the greatest pop songs of the early twenty-first century, alongside Death Grips' "I've Seen Footage". I remember exactly where I was. The surroundings. The thing is that while Gary Numan had some good tracks on I, Assassin and even Warriors he then settled into a rut where each album had one good single, one good b-side, and lots of filler, and that's the feeling I have with this new song. It's like "I Still Remember" or "My World Storm" or something.

Ashley Pomeroy, Friday, 12 August 2022 20:49 (two years ago)

The video is delightful. I didn't think much of the song as a song, but as a comedy sketch it's great.

all of the interviews i've read with crj around this record suggest she didn't drift toward any one sound with this record, there's apparently a real range, of which "beach house" and "western wind" represent the poles

"talking to yourself" has plunged me in a perfectly-synesthetically-recreated sense memory of 2012 when i was depressed and listening to crj's kiss daily, this should be horrible but for whatever reason i am really enjoying timecrushed "th1s k1ss 2.0" complete with wormhole-dilated crj vocal fx

The early singles work really well in the context of the album. Loving the sophisti-pop vibes on a few of these tracks. On my second run through now and it's hitting the spot.

Far Away is great. Love the Scritti Politti-esque synth bassline in the chorus.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:41 (two years ago)

Ok so Beach House still misses. But Western Wind does work much better in the album context. Still not a great single, but it adds some nice mid-album atmosphere.

The last two singles (Talking to Yourself, Three Loneliest Time) both slay on the record.

Beach House isn't great, I find it cringey, both lyrically and musically.

The title track is a way better disco bop, after she yells: "I'm coming back for you!" Iconic moment. Then those disco strings!

Talking to Yourself is def the best single from the bunch imo.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 21 October 2022 19:41 (two years ago)

"beach house" feels like its knowingly cringey, which makes it...camp?

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 21 October 2022 19:44 (two years ago)

Technically I think it's knowingly camp, which makes it ironic. I don't know, it's a goofy song, hard to hate. She's kind of goofy! That's what charmed me about her live show, she's got kind of a shtick going.

Bends is driving me crazy because I'm certain the melody of the verse is basically the same as a Momus song, but I can't figure out which one. I think I might be thinking of Voyager, but I'm not really sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqKDUXp2gDk

Almost certainly a coincidence, just too weird to imagine Jepsen listening to Momus of all people.

Anyway, this album rules, can't stop listening to it.

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 October 2022 19:59 (two years ago)

This album is good, not great. I think it may be a grower. Beach House does kinda suck and take you out of it, I do wish it wasn’t there. Nothing really sticks out, which is a shame, she has had some great star making moments and this seems to lack a “Too much” or “Boy Problems”. It’s a nice pop star “growing up” record though, like Taylor has been doing for a while.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 21 October 2022 20:34 (two years ago)

On a first listen I love this album. The back half I think really nails that convalescent feeling of coming out of a long isolation, the emotional neediness of it, that mix of joy and gratitude and fragility and a sense that the good things may not last. "Bends" into "Western Wind" is perfect.

ooh bullion co-produced/wrote "bends" and "far away"

ufo, Sunday, 23 October 2022 06:01 (two years ago)

After one listen, I definitely like The Loneliest Time more than Dedicated, which never really hooked me apart from a couple songs. we'll see how it compares to EMOTION after a few more listens. "Beach House" still sounds out of left field tho, not sure I'll ever really like that song

Vinnie, Sunday, 23 October 2022 07:10 (two years ago)

"shooting star" reminds me of the last kylie album, i really like it but wish it rode out the coda more

ufo, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 08:12 (two years ago)

just like with EMOTION, the bonus tracks are amazing. "Anxious" might be better than anything on the album

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 07:33 (two years ago)

I didn’t realise that was a bonus track, seems odd not to be part of the album to me.

I guess thinking back it’s a classic CRJ move, see “Drive”

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 08:51 (two years ago)

Heh, I similarly wasn't aware the EMOTION bonus tracks were bonus tracks when I first heard it. I just thought it was a very long, very good album

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 10:08 (two years ago)

I wish the whole album was co-written by Bullion. Far-away and Bends are great. I want more of that.

Bends to Western Wind is indeed a perfect combo.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 10:09 (two years ago)

Xxxpost: maybe CRJ doesn’t know Momus but Bullion might.

i don't think "bends" is ripping "voyager" at least

ufo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 11:11 (two years ago)

lol at some point it came out that haim co-wrote "making the most of the night" under a pseudonym and i never knew until now?

ufo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 12:10 (two years ago)

I finally listened to the song "The Loneliest Time." It sounds like it's going for an Olivia Newton John vibe.

“uhh”—like, this is an insane oatmeal raisin cookie “uhh” (President Keyes), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 13:57 (two years ago)

Not hearing Momus per se but it does sounds like german electropop from early 00’s - backing track at least - something like Barbara Morgenstern, Lali Puna, isan… stuff like that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 14:38 (two years ago)

"the loneliest time" is excellent. that and "western wind" outclass everything else on here.

the rest is fine, but those are just excellent!

lol at some point it came out that haim co-wrote "making the most of the night" under a pseudonym and i never knew until now?

Huh I never knew that either. When I heard Sia's version of it, it made perfect sense that she co-wrote - it's a very Sia melody. I'm not sure what part Haim wrote, but the chorus has the quick pace of some of their songs

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 15:48 (two years ago)

Add my name to the list of ilxors who love "Western Wind". Suggests an alternate universe where she collaborated on an album with Benoit and Sergio.

Don't get the hate for "Beach House"! If No Doubt got back together and released it I'd love it. And I love it this way too

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 October 2022 17:20 (two years ago)

'western wind' definitely one of my songs of the year.

Okay, late to hearing this, but it really is terrific, especially the back half. Damn. Cut "Beach House" and it comes within swinging distance of flawless, imho. Absolutely love "Western Wind", "Go Find" and "The Loneliest Time" in particular.

"Beach House" was a real crowd-pleaser live by the way, a fun moment in the show

erasingclouds, Thursday, 17 November 2022 16:00 (two years ago)

Being a good live-show tune is definitely what I feel the intention behind Beach House is.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 17 November 2022 16:57 (two years ago)

I genuinely don't hate it, I would like it more as a standalone single that works great live and shows up on her inevitably killer singles comp. It just takes me out of the album's otherwise great vibe.

peace, man, Thursday, 17 November 2022 18:39 (two years ago)

The sequencing on this album is a thing of beauty. I mentioned Bends into Western Wind, but also love Go Find Yourself or Whatever into The Loneliest Time. Bc The Loneliest Time, on its own, is poised on this knife-edge between genuine hope and false hope: it could be a love story, or it could just be the kind of self-deluding fantasy you spin when you're lonely and starting to think it's a good idea to call up your ex. But Go Find Yourself or Whatever is so clearly about being able to hold reality and false hope in your mind at the same time: "Tell me that we'll meet up someday/I'll tell you that I'm no good at tellin' lies," but also, simultaneously, "and I'll wait for you." So that when The Loneliest Time starts after that final "I'll wait for you," the balance tips just slightly in the direction of fantasy: this vision of reuniting, loneliness ended, everything back the way it was and the sun on the water in the morning, it's beautiful but it isn't real.

it's decent but quite a different vibe for her. definitely not better than anything on the last album but there's tracks i would take it over, sure. presumably some sort of loneliest time side b is on its way?

ufo, Monday, 26 June 2023 23:37 (two years ago)

I like it a lot and - presumably because it's produced by James Ford - I can totally imagine Jessie Ware singing it.

My understanding is that there won't be a full-length side B this time but just an EP of about 5 tracks in length.

And yes she's established herself as a pretty reliably excellent live experience. I saw her again a few months ago and it was just relentless joy and ebullience from beginning to end.

Psychedelic Switch is almost a Perfume track but with the dial tuned a bit more back towards Daft Punk.

^^ I'd add "So Right" to those picks. I wasn't crazy about "Shy Boy" so I'm also surprised how much I like this album - her first side-B that rivals the parent album imo

It's the first one I've liked more than the parent album. It might be my favourite since Emotion.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 31 July 2023 09:45 (two years ago)
