I was the Kotche voter and expect this will appeal most to people who tend to like more experimental music than is typically associated with Wilco. To re-share what I posted in the voting thread:

One side project I will campaign for is Glenn Kotche's 2006 solo album Mobile, which begins with Steve Reich-inspired ambient but quickly expands in scope and becomes a showcase for Kotche's tremendous talents as a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He plays drum kit, piano, vibraphone, mbira, and electronic drum pads. The whole thing is extremely rhythmic and musical in a way that might surprise you and appeal to fans of bands like The Books.

damn. i knew about the "some are teeth" expression but never knew that was bubblegum on the cover. fits beautifully with it being their poppiest record (at the time, probably still). but is there a connection between "some are teeth, some aren't" and the song "Summerteeth"? Kicking Television my no.1. Possible heresy for the purist, but I had some times with it over Easter of this year that have bruised and riddled me in all the best ways.

Confession: have never listened to Schmilco all the way through.

This poll was a great opportunity to go back and listen to the albums that passed me by. Star Wars really clicked with me, Schmilco did not. Must confess I cannot fathom ranking it ahead of all that’s to come, a classic Brad challops

Biggest surprise for me in this poll was the distance between Being There and AM. Being There is far superior but I think of them as appealing to the same crowd of old-timers. Wouldn't have thought Being There would beat out Ghost and AM would only garner one 5th place vote.

idk there are about 10 songs on being there better than anything on a.m., so not super surprised by the difference. a.m. is generally not very well received, no?

I love AM and was the sole voter. Considered giving Ode to Joy its lone vote as well, but went with the five I've listened to the most, and AM has been with me since I was a teenager. A bunch of somewhat dopey pop alt country tracks but endlessly singable and an all-time great car record. There are a few songs that imo are just as good as the material on Being There -- "Pick Up The Change," "That's Not the Issue," and "Dash 7".

considered having being there or a ghost is born in the last spot but being there falls off a bit in the second disc & the studio versions of the ghost is born tracks don't really do most of them justice & i dislike the sequencing, while cruel country is just a very pleasant listen the whole way through

I hold Being There in such high regard because it landed at such a key time in the expansion of my musical tastes and blew away my preconceptions of what Wilco could be by tying in other threads from what I was digging at around the same time.

I was only 18 when Uncle Tupelo split and missed them completely, they hadn't made an impact at all in the tiny central Illinois town I lived in, despite being so close to their ground zero. But when I started college, I started hearing about them and, still being in central Illinois, I was totally primed for Wilco and Son Volt. At first I was 100% team Farrar in terms of musical output, A.M. was fine, but didn't connect with me as much as Trace did. But over the first few years in college I started, naturally, digging more deeply than what Spin and Rolling Stone exposed me to in high school and was getting into bands that were knottier and gnarlier, less easy to digest and classify. So when Being There came out and showed that, hey, Wilco was ready to bring in a little of that too, I was immediately won over. I listened to that record so many goddamn times on my Discman that fall of 1996, trudging through the central Illinois cold back and forth from my design studio at all hours of the night. There were so many nooks and crannies to fall in love with.

Yeah, it's not their best album and kinda wildly uneven, but I still love it so so so much.

"Someday Soon" has such great atmospheric backing vox. I don't think John Stirratt gets the credit he deserves for his harmonizing, really one of the x-factors of this band.

i didnt get a ballot in for this but "someday soon" would have been on my ballot for sure, as would some of the other trad/twang songs from Being There like "forget the flowers" and "was i in your dreams"

I like "misunderstood" & "sunken treasure" fine but theyre never what i want to hear when i reach for Being There. in my alternative Wilco universe, Being There would be a single disc with fewer of the moody/heady songs, and those two tunes in particular would get held over to be on a double album version of Summerteeth

Excellent job Indexed and this is quite the project, us Wilco fans asperate it. Couple of things. A Top 77 is quite ambitious and would have said something eelier if I saw that you are doing a Top 77. The Top 77 is usually only for the year end countdown polls, with artist polls in most cases it's a Top 50. The most I have ever done is a Top 60 for Steely Dan with most of mine being a Top 40.

Again thanks for all the hard work!

I did look back at some of the previous polls to gauge the right length. Broadcast had 77 with 24 ballots, and selfishly, I just have a great amount of affection for many of the tracks that fell in the 77-60 range!

Pretty wild to see "Passenger Side" outside the top 65. It was the first Wilco song I heard, back in '94, and kind of their signature song for a minute. It received some decent airplay on St Louis' alternative radio station (105.7 The Point) and was included on their "Pointessential" cd compilation. Anyway, a nice little early gem that I'm surprised to see so low.

My wife has endured a lot of Wilco the last three weeks, and on hearing the "make me spill my beer" lyric asked what the hell we were listening to.

"My Darling" especially feels like a direct nod to John & Paul.

Surprised to see "Candyfloss" so low, tbh.

Yeah, I'm very impressed by the presentation so far - the banners really make it.

all super underrated clearly - the organ solo in "on and on and on"! "bird without a tail" is my favourite thing they've done in over a decade, "wreckroom" is just immense, "chinese apple" is gorgeous and meditative and one of the clearest predecessors to "one sunday morning"

"whole love", "say you miss me", "more...", and "theologians" all a bit underrated too. even the other ghost is born tracks that showed up are all quite nice (though much better live), except "the late greats" which has always felt like a pretty nothing-y track to me and i hate it being sequenced at the end of the album

so is every song from ghost is born going to show up?

You Are My Face, you are my #1. It's got the integration between the gorgeous songwriting and full harnessing of the power of the band that I also love about Side with the Seeds, and it's just such a beautiful tone, all the way through.

Also very pleased to see Acuff-Rose this high, I don't think it made the final cut on my ballot, but love it. And yeah both When You Wake Up Feeling Old and In a Future Age, those tracks towards the end of Summerteeth when you've already had an album's worth of riches and it just keeps giving and giving. Think I voted for the former but not the latter.

i got you (i feel good)(at the end of the century) was an easy vote for me. one of the best rockers they ever did!

"I'm the Man Who Love" gets my vote as the funkiest Wilco track ever. That thing really swings and yes, another great horn section for us older fans.

There are a lot of reasons Yankee Hotel Foxtrot ranks among my all-time favorite records, and most of them are done very well on "I'm the Man":
-- the mix of abstract, poetic lyrics with the very straightforward, personal declarations, e.g., "All I can be is a busy sea of/ Spinning wheels and hands that feel" followed by the plain beauty of the chorus lyrics
-- the loud/soft dynamics, with the way they drop the bass, electric guitar, etc. in the third verse, leaving just the bones of the horns, the acoustic guitar, and Glenn's marching band snare before some righteous cymbal smashes and horn blares
-- the "tear it up and make it ugly" nature of the electric guitar solo over the "ooh oohs" in the outro
-- the goddamn glorious sequencing, which, how could you ever listen to this song and not immediately want to hear "Pot Kettle Black"?

A really great intro as well, that roaring guitar riff is like a call-to-arms, always a concert highlight for me (especially since it tends to follow a more downbeat number.)

“muzzle of bees” is just the greatest goddamn shit ever

Cline wasn't in Wilco for AGIB, was he? I adore the song too.

AGIB is the one Wilco album without a second lead guitarist, I think it’s all Tweedy playing all that beautiful shit. Of course Cline does it now live.

According to Wikipedia Jim O’Rourke does play acoustic guitar on Muzzle of Bees, though, in addition to Tweedy on electric and acoustic baritone 12-string. Hmmm. It is a pretty O’Rourkeian guitar figure come to think of it. He doesn’t have a writing credit though

i rewatched I Am Trying to Break our Heart again today for the first time since it came out. i'm surprised that the film doesn't go into either jim o'rourke or the fact that glenn kotche was new to the group (although i think he'd been playing in loose fur with o'rourke and tweedy for a couple years first(?))

however, i understand there may be good reasons for that (for example, if you're o'rourke stepping into a mixing/producer role for a kind of troubled project and there's also a camera crew there, maybe part of the agreement is "leave me out of the film"), and it's such a great doc on the whole, beautifully shot

also, John Stirratt is the boss. i love his playing and he often seems to try to be the peacemaker, at least in the film

the reason it didn't have o'rourke was that the filmmakers ran out of money before o'rourke was brought in, & kotche was formally added to the band on the very first day of filming

o'rourke, bach, and even stirratt also played guitar on a ghost is born but it's mostly tweedy, especially lead parts

they do talk about “changing the drums” and how even bennett thought it was a good decision

Muzzle of Bees was my #4. Certainly one of Tweedy's finest lyrics. The section in the book where he details his writing process(es) is fascinating - the different books he cribs from, the combining of different verb forms to throw meanings out of joint.

I'd never seen that live version of MoB! Damn. Their most O'Rourkean song? The early sections could easily be on Bad Timing or Halfway to Threeway. Cline is a beast at the end, there.

In the daft game of 'these are the songs that currently bound of Muzzle of Bees in my head' the songs that currently bounce off Muzzle of Bees in my head are A Day in the Life and, weirdly, Estranged.

yeah "muzzle of bees" is where you can really hear o'rourke's influence on tweedy, it's a folk style that he rarely uses, much closer to the first loose fur album & o'rourke's solo work. there's two acoustic guitars on it and they each play one of them, which i'm sure contributed to that too

very fond of this performance of hotel arizona, letting cline loose on the older songs like that is great

Wow, Cline is immense on that. And the version of Impossible Germany from that show too. Jesus.

Xp They did a great version of Spiders at the interlochen amphitheater near traverse city, mi a month ago, almost literally "on a private beach in michigan". There was also supposed to be a meteor shower that night that tweedy said they were all gonna go lie on their backs & watch after the show, but it turned out to be mostly obscured by the light of a full moon. Still a perfect song for a perfect night.

ELT rocks but relative to its contemporaneous rockers, it suffers just a wee bit from a kinda blah chorus imo

Yeah, until this poll I didn’t realize how much loose fur was writing/recording between summerteeth and YHF. There’s a lot of overlap, and you can see how and why the band personnel shift happened in those years. Laminated Cat was, I think, supposed to be a YHF song at some point

Laminated Cat is the same song as Not for the Season, shows up once or twice on the YHF outtakes, Wilco used to play it live more. It's a banger! And the Loose Fur version is a slowed-down, gorgeous atmosphere with A+ guitar noise construction built over it. Def check it out!

actually i take it back, i just counted it out and there are exactly 17 songs left i'd be surprised to see not place. so maybe no shocking surprises? we shall see!

That's my no.1. Tweedy's guitar playing is astonishing and Kotche's drumming almost tearing through the fabric of the sound... Stories about the mid-section attempting to replicate a panic attack aside, I want to climb inside the blowout; I want the blowout to climb inside me.

did not expect "summer teeth" to show up this high

xposting back a bit-

the first loose fur along with o'rourke's insignificance (which features tweedy and kotche) document a sort of staging area for yankee hotel foxtrot. for me, it's no surprise to see "laminated cat" so high. the studio recording in particular has such a singular sound.

sidebar: maybe some personal projection here but i often feel like tweedy created a character specifically for that song and has revisited "them" a few times since; most heavily on sky blue sky. there's many ways to read it, many perspectives. moral of the story is: jeff tweedy is a fantastic lyricist.

Ranked "Summer Teeth" very high. A perfectly sweet, little pop rock song, deceptively simple, and beautifully executed. Am I right to think this is the kind of thing a post-Jay Wilco could just never do as well again?

Yeah that line in "Jar" has always bugged me, but I did see that he thinks the line has been misinterpreted over the years. In the deluxe Summerteeth booklet he had this to say:

“I was deluded enough to think I’d succeeded in masking it. I was probably more focused on that at the time then people actually hearing the lyrics. The end of she’s a jar -‘she begs me not to hit her’ - is probably the one lyric that gets the most scrutiny of anything I’ve ever written. And honest to God it never occurred to me it would be taken that the narrator of the song was the person doing the hitting. I was thinking about being in a relationship with someone who’s been hit and how that fear doesn’t stop with the next relationship.”

i love/hate tweedy's naivete about the line. i love that he finds it unimaginable that he, or even _one of the characters in his songs_, would hit a woman. i hate that women can't find it unimaginable about any man. i hate that we always have to consider the possibility.

anyway, it's art! art _can_ do gut-punches like that. it just makes me personally uncomfortable and i've deleted the song from my library so i never, ever have to listen to it. that's a me thing, not a reflection on the song.

honestly hadn't paid much attention to "pot kettle black" until my catalog re-listen, and it's probably the song that grew the most in my estimation. sandwiched between "i'm the man who loves you" and "poor places," both extremely weird and extremely good, a song that is merely extremely good and not extremely weird can fade into the background a bit.

"sunken treasure" and "poor places" were both easy top tenners for me. each epic and devastating, yet homespun

The way they strip down "Pot Kettle Black" placing so much emphasis on Glenn's weird percussion sounds (multipads?) always makes me smile

My only misgiving about “I’m Always in Love” is how absolutely transcendent the synth riff is that runs through the song, and that it always seems somewhat neutered in live performances (someone is usually playing it, it just doesn’t ride above everything in quite the same way). honestly i really don't care for "california stars", it just plods along without much movement. the mermaid avenue vol. 1 recordings all sound pretty bad too because when they recorded them they thought they were just rough takes to be used as demos, but they never got the chance to re-record them properly that they thought they were going to get.

I hope all the Wilco enthusiasts have seen the episode of The Bear which uses Spiders (Kidsmoke) from Kicking Television, one of the best syncs I can remember in a TV show (except perhaps "Siamese Twins" in The Americans).

Great number one. That seems like the song Wilco really has to play every night, or at least used to, and the song that always seemed to kick the set into high gear. It's just such a cathartic anthem. And of course it had double meaning when they kicked off their Millennium Park show with it summer of '21.

Great poll! Been on holiday and offline a lot so didn’t follow the roll out but A Shot In The Arm is a great number one. Gun was my number one, glad to see it got some other support! But I am admittedly more a Uncle Tupelo fan than a Wilco fan, though I still love them. Sad to see I was the only Sunloathe voter, it always stands out to me on Schmilco relistens.

I am actually surprised by the surprise around A Shot in the Arm. Only song I even considered for my #1. One of my favorite songs of the 90s! I polled some friends when I was making my ballot for their Top 5. Everyone said a couple YHF songs, but there was a lot of disparity in which ones. But think all but one said A Shot in the Arm.

I was more surprised by "Ashes" being so high. Very worthy, but not what I would have expected -- I would love to hear from its voters on that one in particular.

Ashes is just beautiful, the longing, sorrowful guitar hook, lyrics could be a poem, no clunky lines like some of the other beloved yhf tracks have... I'm lookin at you, mr take off your bandaids cuz I don't believe in touchdowns.

I was convinced "Poor Places" would take #1. It's definitely my #1, but then again, I didn't vote.

"poor places" is such a triumph of o'rourke's "scene changes" as he calls them, the constantly shifting arrangement is so wonderful

i didn't vote so i can't complain too much but i don't think anything from summerteeth would have even made my top 15; i.e. nope didn't see that #1 coming at all. "impossible germany" probably would have topped my ballot.

I love Ashes of American Flags. It feels like a song people will be listening to in 50 years (if, you know). That title is on the nose, the 'nobody gives a fuck' line is earnest, but the song - and Tweedy in general - is always retreating from that didacticism and what survives is the emotion, the ache. O'Rourke knew it too, which is why he's always trying to collapse the song from the inside. What your left with is like waking from a dream and only having the shadow of the dream, not the thing itself.

There are a few of their songs which make me stop whatever I am doing and pay full attention, and sing along even, “Ashes”, “Hell is Chrome”, “Bull Black Nova”, “Jesus etc.”, “Sky Blue Sky”, “Company at My Back” and so on. Not my top 5 but they’d be up there. I should have found a way to vote.
I think Wilco the Album is unfairly overlooked here, so many of the songs surpass anything from Schmilco onwards to me.

23 of my 25 votes made the results, which is probably embarrassing for me but instead i'm going to flip it around for self-confidence and suggest that "Panthers" is a non-album track that I bet most people would like. during my big chrono relisten (which i assume at least some other people do but maybe not) I put it on my list it was during a blind listen of a deluxe version with bonus tracks where I didn't realize it was going into bonus tracks territory. in other words, it was a "true pick", and given that for almost no reason at all i made Wishful Thinking my #1 (i like that song, but that was not a true pick), i know that they weren't all true picks

"Panthers" is great, and so is "Wishful Thinking" even though it didn't make my ballot. On my first listen to AGIB I remember finding "Wishful Thinking" a little dreary, but like most of Tweedy's work that doesn't necessarily blow you away immediately, it's rewarded by deeper repeated listening. Also realized that rolling out 77 tracks means that a lot are gonna place

well fuck the haters, the net result of this poll has been to send me back to Wilco, the Album and Star Wars and I think both are criminally underrated

I actually listened to these again (as well as The Whole Love), and I think I agree. I know they get knocked a lot, but at least the two earlier ones landed in the top 30 for their respective Pazz & Jop polls so they definitely had a good deal of support. They may not be my personal favorites, but they're not bad albums at all, all three were pretty good overall.
