That's actually a pretty solid one-two-three of headliners there.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 03:27 (two years ago)

first thought: “oh, they didn’t do the retro act thing”
galaxy brain: gorillaz and bjork are the retro acts

mh, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 03:52 (two years ago)

I was thinking that Blondie are the oldest band here?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 03:54 (two years ago)

oh, most likely. I was thinking of first-/second-string headliners

mh, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 03:58 (two years ago)

Funny to see Blondie sort of randomly billed btw Kaytranda and Becky G.

(I thought the Breeders were cool right now…? They’re billed so low on Saturday.)

Wet Legume (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 04:19 (two years ago)

i guess blackpink finally have enough music for a headline set lol

ufo, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 05:03 (two years ago)

https://www.stereogum.com/2210062/21-thoughts-on-the-coachella-2023-poster/columns/sounding-board/

Much too long but found this part funny as some people were blown away at them making ILMs decade list from last summer.

18. Where’s Alvvays? The critic hive-mind ultimately isn’t that important to the whole festival circuit, and maybe nobody should be too mad that they won’t get to hear “Belinda Says” in a big tent in the middle of the afternoon. But this year’s lineup is actually pretty heavy on critical favorites, so it seems a little strange that the band who made one of last year’s most lauded records won’t be at Coachella

Bee OK, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 18:01 (two years ago)

I'm super impressed how few of these acts I even recognize. #old

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 18:17 (two years ago)

I was thinking the exact same thing *checks palm* time for the old carousel maybe :)

MaresNest, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 18:44 (two years ago)

Jai Paul, wow.

death generator (lukas), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 19:36 (two years ago)

That caught my eye as well

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 20:08 (two years ago)

three months pass...

YouTube has six feeds this year, which theoretically should mean that if it’s on this list you should be able to watch. There does happen to be a seventh stage and do wonder if that will come into play somehow? Anyways, starting the written out list at 4 PM because that is whey they turn it on.

https://www.sfgate.com/sf-culture/article/coachella-announces-surprise-blink-182-set-17895740.php

Now we know why Coachella organizers waited so long to announce set times for the festival’s first weekend: They’d been hiding news that Blink-182 would make a surprise performance, the band’s first set since its famed lineup reunited last year.

When Blink-182 takes the stage at 6:45 p.m. Friday on the festival’s first night, it will mark the first time Travis Barker, Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus have played together publicly since 2014.

British singer James Blake was also announced as a last-minute addition, playing the Do Lab stage at 8:30 p.m.

Bee OK, Friday, 14 April 2023 16:52 (two years ago)

Beam me up (beam me up)
Count me in (count me in)
Three, two, one (three, two, one)
Let's begin

Here we go (here we go)

Here we go (here we go)

Here we go, here we go, here we go

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 00:52 (two years ago)

oh Becky G is a good primer

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 00:54 (two years ago)

Hope others will join me as this is usually pretty fun

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:02 (two years ago)

Looking forward to Wet Leg obviously and I would think they will bring it live

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:06 (two years ago)

Loved the song with the other one is on lead vocals, forget how young they are

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:18 (two years ago)

I assume it was “Convincing”? Yeah, that’s my favorite song of theirs

morrisp.fandom.com (morrisp), Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:26 (two years ago)

That was so much fun

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

Blink 182 time

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

Wet Leg had about 40 minutes of material and "Angelica" was the highlight with their signature song bringing down the house

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:49 (two years ago)

Fuck yeah

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 01:55 (two years ago)

Burna Boy is up too

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:04 (two years ago)

blink opening their set with "family reunion" was perfect lmao. we are all way too old for these songs but shit still makes feel like i'm 15 again

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:09 (two years ago)

as a blink fan, this setlist is a fucking dream

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:13 (two years ago)

yeah it's such a great set so far!

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:18 (two years ago)

Blink's drummer is so good, key to everything

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:32 (two years ago)

WHERE ARE YOU

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:41 (two years ago)

All the, small theengs ...

nickn, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:45 (two years ago)

“dammit” <3

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:48 (two years ago)

I was in the the kitchen, did they just do a No Scrubs interlude?

nickn, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:50 (two years ago)

They did - I think mark used to do the same thing back in the day. And the actual song played as they went offstage

That was a good set. Except for “dumpweed”, that should’ve been left in 1999 where it belongs

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 02:54 (two years ago)

Blondie came on

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:01 (two years ago)

just switched over - Debbie Harry singing "The Tide is High" in a leather jacket and massive sunglasses <3

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:01 (two years ago)

And bringing out Nile Rodgers

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:04 (two years ago)

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:36 (two years ago)

Bad Bunny is happening tonight, trying to wrap my head around that

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:40 (two years ago)

Gorillaz are going to be massive

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:41 (two years ago)

I like that the music after her (and I've heard it once before tonight, same stage? different stage?) is a version of the Stranglers "Golden Brown."

nickn, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:42 (two years ago)

That was amazing

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 03:44 (two years ago)

Gorillaz is all about the guest artist, when it's only Damon Albarn (this isn't Blur), it isn't all that

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 04:12 (two years ago)

A ROYAL TRUX SHIRT

omar little, Saturday, 15 April 2023 04:13 (two years ago)

xpost oh boy they should've gotten actual Bad Bunny onstage for this instead of just playing his audio track

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 04:21 (two years ago)

I'm enjoying this in a stoner way

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 04:54 (two years ago)

Imagining lager louts running from the Gorillaz stage to the Chemical Brothers stage.

This is mind numbing

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 05:13 (two years ago)

Chemical Brothers were so much better than the Gorillaz and on a smaller stage, tho they are on later

Bee OK, Saturday, 15 April 2023 05:32 (two years ago)

their visuals are absolutely incredible

Roz, Saturday, 15 April 2023 05:55 (two years ago)

Cool, I didn't know she was involved at all! Who was playing bass? I'm not sure there was a closeup at all. Anna Butterss is still involved with the band I think? Did she do bass on the whole album? Loved her solo record.

Stage setup was impressive.

How did Soul Glo go over on Friday? Kinda hoping they blew a few minds since I think they're great musically and also local Philly dudes... And they are one of the few loud rock things on the bill.

Would be cool if Snail Mail could play just one show that isn't a complete trainwreck.

The stage production was suppose to (and did) contain an ice rink that was constructed and ready to go.

What about the ankle injury? They could’ve left the ice rink and add a non-ice platform or section for him.

Did he also pull from the livestream due to the ankle injury?

Does Frank Ocean hate money?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 03:33 (two years ago)

Hype through the roof yet no vinyl editions of his albums, almost null live performances.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 03:34 (two years ago)

I get he’s probably a very introvert artist but there’s so many decisions where he doesn’t even need to do live appearances like vinyl editions or licensing music for advertising/tv series and yet he’s not in.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 03:36 (two years ago)

the less he gives a fuck, the more i like him. does he even have any new material?

''i am the kanye west kanye west thinks he is.'' (Austin), Thursday, 20 April 2023 04:03 (two years ago)

which is more uncool: hating money or loving money?

''i am the kanye west kanye west thinks he is.'' (Austin), Thursday, 20 April 2023 04:05 (two years ago)

so his doctor's advice is basically "you can't rap while sitting down" ?

StanM, Thursday, 20 April 2023 04:43 (two years ago)

Ok yeah loving money is more uncool. That said, there are fans of him who had probably wasted a shit ton of money to fly and see him on his live appearance #5 in 10 years only to be left hanging and that’s not cool.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 04:55 (two years ago)

I’m not a Frank Ocean fan but it all seems very unprofessional to me and ultimately Coachella is not affected, the fans are.

cancelling a performance because of suffering two leg fractures and a sprain shortly before the first performance which caused an entire reworking of the show hours before showtime that didn't go well, isn't entirely the same thing as just saying "lol I don't wanna perform".

granted idk that he needed to fire all the skaters before the first show but if he kept his slot for the second show and performed sitting down per doctor's orders then he'd just get lit up for being boring and sitting down for the whole show

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:15 (two years ago)

thank you for bringing it back, neanderthal. officially he has a medical condition that prevents him from performing. we can speculate on subtext, but that's what has happened.

has there been any word yet on a replacement?

be cool to see someone random like pharrell call in a bunch of favors and just have a jam session.

OR NO WAIT WHAT IF THIS ALL A PR STUNT AND FRANK SHOWS UP TO PLAY HIS BRAND NEW ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY?

(that would rule!)

''i am the kanye west kanye west thinks he is.'' (Austin), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:18 (two years ago)

The replacement will be Blink 182.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:23 (two years ago)

Which oddly enough cancelled several dates earlier this year because Travis had an injury on his foot. He’s a drummer though so it makes more sense.

Kevin Parker (tame impala) had a fractured hip and didn’t cancel this year.

I guess an ankle injury doesn’t make you pay fines.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:28 (two years ago)

re: frank
i mean yeah, he has set the precedent of being very flaky. but at least he's making an effort with the ankle thing lol. what was the purpose of him appearing? my q about new material was genuine btw. does he even have anything to promote? or was it him being just a prestige thing?

but

His career is probably dead after this.

oh, definitely not.

alpine static, Thursday, 20 April 2023 06:55 (two years ago)

couldn't he get his father, Billy, to perform?

StanM, Thursday, 20 April 2023 07:42 (two years ago)

he released a pair of singles back in 2020 before he was originally supposed to play coachella, and had at least put out an extensive run of non-album singles post-blonde in the years prior

he said at this year's show that he didn't have any new material to perform (but is working on new material). really it's probably just because they threw too much money at him to turn down

ufo, Thursday, 20 April 2023 08:45 (two years ago)

i'm glad i wasn't really into blonde much because being an obsessive fan of his seems frustrating

ufo, Thursday, 20 April 2023 08:48 (two years ago)

i think frank is (was) fulfilling the contractual obligation from his canceled 2020 booking and if there was no obligation, he would never have agreed to headline.

frank's younger brother passed away in august 2020 at the age of 18, and if the speech he gave during his performance is any indication, he is very much still grieving and that grief is affecting his ability to create his art. some artists are able to channel their pain into their music, but some people can't.

Jim Curtis could write a book about the surreal phone calls he’s fielded during major music festivals in his California desert town. Some callers ask to turn the music down, and others complain the music is not loud enough.

After 18 years as the liaison between the city of Indio and Goldenvoice — the promoters for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — Curtis thought he has heard it all, but this past weekend’s 2023 Coachella set a new precedent. Due to headlining artists breaking curfew over all three nights, Goldenvoice is on the hook for $117,000 in fines. The money goes into the city’s general fund which supports police, fire and public works.

The ankle injury sounded like bullshit from the start. Saying he has stage anxiety or something like that would have been better received because even if the ankle injury was real, he spent pretty much all the concert sitting so I don’t see why he couldn’t just do the same on the second weekend.

I think he just bailed after reading comments on the concert being a dissapointment and underwhelming.
