Both really, though it was more cringe at the time and curdled into something creepier with hindsight.

Most of Robinson's work is amongst the least toxic love songs of its era, he really transmitted this inage of a considerate, romantic guy.

I think we should be cautious of idealizing people based on their celebrity personas, but "everyone is a rapist" is an unhelpful tack to the other extreme.
