I Been Hangin' Around Grain Elevators: The ILM Canadian Pop Music Poll (Nominating/Voting Thread)

Message Bookmarked

Deadline for nominations: Friday, April 7
Deadline for voting: Friday, April 21

Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11QxHlqiNKXsLFaZBRkHcD37OCcujR04cx0ItcCdXm9w/edit?usp=sharing

The spreadsheet is just a placeholder for now, with a list of Canadian artists I cut-and-paste from somewhere. I'll start inputting actual songs over the weekend.

I always base the points for my polls on the old Pazz & Jop system:

# of Songs Listed Total Points Allowed Maximum Points for One Song
10 100 30
20 200 40
30 300 50

If you don't like math, let me know and I'll suggest a point scheme. If you don't like Canadians, I can help you work through that, too.

After they finish the female country poll, you can begin posting nominations on this thread.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 March 2023 14:01 (two years ago)

This is gonna be difficult. I could easily put in a bunch of votes for Joni, Neil, and the Band, but they should have (and have had) their own polls.

I didn't see them on the spreadsheet, but they are indeed Canadian, and I hereby nominate the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1fzJ_AYajA

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 23 March 2023 14:52 (two years ago)

Definitely Canadian. There are lots of gaps on the spreadsheet right now--just got it from some site with a list of Canadian artists.

I hope the artists you mention don't dominate--I'll limit myself to one Neil and one Joni (not a huge band fan)--but, depending upon how many people vote, they could. Their votes could be split among so many different songs, though, that they don't.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 March 2023 16:11 (two years ago)

band = Band!

clemenza, Thursday, 23 March 2023 16:13 (two years ago)

I will be trying to determine and then voting for the most Canadian Neil and Joni songs.

Chris L, Thursday, 23 March 2023 18:54 (two years ago)

Can we add to spreadsheets? Needs Drake, Marie Davidson, Paul Bley Tim Hecker, Tegan & Sarah and Oscar Peterson for starters.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 23 March 2023 19:05 (two years ago)

Adds: Kathleen Edwards & board favorite Destroyer

Indexed, Thursday, 23 March 2023 21:45 (two years ago)

Thanks. They'll all be added this weekend. But please nominate specific songs. As I mentioned above, the list of artists is just a placeholder--perhaps useful to anyone not from Canada--but they'll all be replaced by specific songs once this is underway.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 March 2023 21:52 (two years ago)

I will be trying to determine and then voting for the most Canadian Neil and Joni songs.

I had been thinking of approaching those two particular artists in exactly the same way.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 March 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

Looks like the country poll is finished, so nominations are open. I've started inputting actual songs, a mix of famous ones and personal favourites, plus things culled from lists. Ginette Reno's "Beautiful Second Hand Man" will be high on my list; her Wikipedia entry, which I checked to see if the title was hyphenated, says "Not to be confused with Janet Reno."

clemenza, Friday, 24 March 2023 21:05 (two years ago)

Any limit on # of nominations?

Here's four I'll post while I'm thinking of them.

Anne Murray - Talk It Over in the Morning ( Youtube )
Junior Boys - Night Walk ( Youtube )
Jane Siberry - Everything Reminds Me Of My Dog ( Youtube )
Bamff and Danice Macleod - Crevice Tool ( Youtube )

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 25 March 2023 03:42 (two years ago)

Not really, no--as many as you need. I finished inputting the CBC's list of 100 best Canadian songs.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 March 2023 04:31 (two years ago)

Crevice Tool is like some kind of fever dream you feel sure can’t actually have happened.

Kim, Saturday, 25 March 2023 16:14 (two years ago)

Half-joking question: Is "Sunglasses After Dark" a brain fart in the spreadsheet, or did it actually have a different title in Canada?

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 March 2023 16:21 (two years ago)

God, my mistake--"Sunglasses at Night," of course. That damn "Goo Goo Muck" clip.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 March 2023 16:30 (two years ago)

Top 10 for me!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTFVMMCwsss

Red Rider, "Lunatic Fringe"

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 March 2023 17:14 (two years ago)

Added some K-97 Top 100 hosted by Rick Mercer. Some truly horrendous stuff on the spreadsheet right now--Dan Hill, Parachute Club, Nickelback (of course)--that needs to be blotted out by some more good ones.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 March 2023 17:55 (two years ago)

Amazingly, neither the CBC nor K-97 list had this:

Wow, something I actually can't find on YouTube or Spotify: "I'll Cry Tomorrow" by a Diodes spinoff band, the Secrets. (All I get is Susan Hayward.)

Marie Davidson - Work It
G!YBE - Dead Flag Blues
Tegan and Sarah - Closer
kd lang- My last cigarette

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 25 March 2023 18:18 (two years ago)

About half of those are on there, headed out for a movie, will get the rest on later.

clemenza, Saturday, 25 March 2023 18:25 (two years ago)

I signed in: not seeing how to vote, or how to add artists, or songs for artists already listed. Will these options come later, or should we just put our choices here?

dow, Saturday, 25 March 2023 18:51 (two years ago)

Just list stuff here, I'll add it; you can view the spreadsheet with the link, but that's all.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 March 2023 00:12 (two years ago)

Totally forgot to put my email in the opening post:

Maybe a moderator can add that at the bottom? (I'll make a request at some point.)

clemenza, Sunday, 26 March 2023 00:13 (two years ago)

For any Canadians nostalgic for a year you barely half-remember:

clemenza, Sunday, 26 March 2023 01:05 (two years ago)

Making a mention of Doughboys here so I don't forget later. The Crush album is pretty much all killer no filler.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 26 March 2023 04:09 (two years ago)

Oh yeah, "Whispering Pines"!!! (XXP) No-brainer for me despite not entirely 'getting' The Band more broadly.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 26 March 2023 10:46 (two years ago)

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Sunday, 26 March 2023 15:08 (two years ago)

Thanks, added everything. The way the last two have been formatted is exactly right: the artist (no "the"s, not even for Weeknd), space, hyphen, space, song title. Makes it easy to cut and paste.

Worked at a downtown record store in the mid-'80s with a fanatical collector of rare Canadian albums; he got me onto this weird psychedelic thing from '69 that will probably be on my list.

And don't forget the British Modbeats (St. Catherines). I found this in a pile my parents kept in the basement when I was a kid..."L.S.D." scared me! I'll probably include their "Sorrow" cover.

I might have more nominees later. Leaving some of the heaviest hitters (Neil, Joni) alone until I see what everyone else is nominating (to quote one of my nominated tracks, "This could get messy").

I don't always make a point of listening to everything that's nominated in these polls, but for this one I pledge that I will listen to every unknown-to-me song that is linked/mentioned in this thread.

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Sunday, 26 March 2023 15:46 (two years ago)

By "they," do you mean Big Wreck (not sure) or Lighthouse (definitely!)?

clemenza, Sunday, 26 March 2023 20:44 (two years ago)

It’s a long shot and I’ll probably be the only voter for it, but Étienne d’Août by Malajube is going to be very high on my ballot. If you can track down the Daytrotter Sessions version, that’s the one that puts a hot poker right through my heart.

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 26 March 2023 20:52 (two years ago)

Ah I meant big wreck, just one guy is Canadian but it’s the main guy but iirc formed in the US.

Will (kruezer2), Sunday, 26 March 2023 21:17 (two years ago)

I looked at their Wikipedia entry...They seem to be half-Canadian, or at least did at their inception. Someone who isn't, who I thought was, is Gale Garnett--born in New Zealand, arrived in Canada at 11. So not eligible--but I'll post this anyway.

At work, will get all those added tonight...As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I had film classes with one of the Diodes, John Hamilton; I think he may have just left the band at the time. (Already listed Treble Charger's "Even Grable," a sure Top 5 for me.)

Nice to see Plasterscene Replicas in the list. Underrated and fairly forgotten. The actual video is on YT but the sound quality sucks, so here's a better sounding version...

I had been thinking days ago that we might see Platinum Blonde nominated, but probably not the Killer Dwarfs...

Here's one more song that I remembered, forgot, and remembered again and now feel compelled to add to the list to stop the mental cycle:

Hagood Hardy - The Homecoming

"This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide" is on there as one song already...Wish I could cast a vote for one of the early female punk bands, but there's nothing I like quite enough: the Curse, the 'B' Girls (saw them once with--I think--999 and the Incredible Dickies), Michaele Jordana & the Poles, and (a little later) Fifth Column.

I checked Buffalo Springfield last night, thinking they started out Canadian but then lost people for their second and third albums, but no: 3/5 Canadian, same for the second, then--after adding Richie Furay--3/6 for the third.

Surreal personal connection: when I was proofreading advertising flyers for Woolco-Woolworth in the late '80s, my supervisor was a guy who used to manage Fraser & DeBolt.

clemenza, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 14:51 (two years ago)

Jim Messina, not Furay?

And how many Canadians were actually in Steppenwolf?

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 14:58 (two years ago)

You're right--it was Messina who was added, not Furay (but still 3/6). Checked Steppenwolf, and they were 3/5 Canadian on their first album, at least. I'll check their makeup for the nominated songs.

I know the "half-Canadian" benchmark for bands seems arbitrary--it is--but you have to draw that line somewhere. A band with only one Canadian wouldn't seem right.

clemenza, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 15:04 (two years ago)

Just thought about Heart...2/5 Canadian only. Should they be an exception, seeing as the two Canadians basically are the band? (Sorry, anonymous male Heart guys.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 15:07 (two years ago)

waaaay xps

I never knew "I Beg Your Pardon" was Canadian, nor that it was (possibly) unknown outside of the country. I still hear it on the radio a fair bit.

Gotta wonder, was Kon Kan a play on CanCon, or was that not a thing yet?

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 15:20 (two years ago)

Definitely a pun (the whole CanCon thing came in around 1970). I think Barry Harris, who basically was Kon Kan, was a DJ at CIUT once.

clemenza, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 15:34 (two years ago)

Ann Wilson was born in San Diego, and Nancy Wilson was born in San Francisco. Neither ever resided in Canada. Growing up, they moved around various US military bases (Taiwan and Panama among them) before the family settled in suburban Seattle.

my god. the rough list of song i wanted to nominate is longer than the number i can vote for; even after i've removed ones that have been nominated already.

also want to add that as underwhelming as this band was – as a lot of the Can-rock/pop of it's time was – 54-40's "Blame Your Parents" slaps.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 30 March 2023 13:54 (two years ago)

You can vote for 40--more than that might be a little unwieldly. If you vote for 40, take 400 points to distribute (but maybe stick with 50 as the maximum for one song).

I'll start a voting thread on April 21 and lay out some options on how to distribute points.

I did have it correct, but changed it when I saw it listed as Super Friends in the spreadsheet. I figured they used multiple spellings. *shrug*

I loved the first single, but didn't care that much for the rest.

I'll remove Heart.

Some pressings of their albums have a full MAPL certification on the label. Never understood it, myself.

not seeing these:

Kiesza - Hideaway
Melanie Fiona - 4 AM

missing a lot from the dominant pop diva of our lifetime. seems weird to discuss canadian pop music without her:

Céline Dion - Encore un soir
Céline Dion - It’s All Coming Back To Me Now
Céline Dion - Think Twice
Céline Dion - Falling Into You

at bottom, wrapping my arms around some tripe called "Quest" (breastcrawl), Friday, 31 March 2023 22:00 (two years ago)

Will add those...Just curious: does anyone actually like Céline Dion? There was one song of hers I thought was pretty good (pre-Titanic, I'd have to look it up), nothing else I'd ever voluntarily listen to. I know there's a well-known book that tried to figure out what people heard in her (and of course came to the conclusion "I get it now!", because how else could the book end?), but the easy answer, if you ask me, is that people like all sorts of dreadful stuff.

clemenza, Friday, 31 March 2023 22:47 (two years ago)

(Which is what I found really amusing at all those protests about her being left off the Rolling Stone list of greatest singers--like her record sales entitled her to a spot on the list.)

There are maybe three Celine Dion songs that I won't turn off--"If You Asked Me To," "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," and the nominated "It’s All Coming Back To Me Now." I won't be voting for any of them, but yeah, she should be here.

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Saturday, 1 April 2023 15:31 (two years ago)

I checked after Brimstead's post, and I think--95% sure--that the one I liked at the time (and gave a 6.5 or 7.0 to in Radio On) was "Nothing Broken But My Heart."

Thought about Heart some more, and checked with my SOCAN friend, and I don't think they should be eligible. Their MAPL designation had to do with their songwriters, their producers, and where their albums were recorded. But no one in the band was Canadian.

Wasn't sure what the criteria for "pop" is here but I'm excluding classical, jazz, extreme metal and post-hardcore and avant-garde instrumental or electronic music and trying to stick mainly to things that got some commercial airplay.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 April 2023 14:52 (two years ago)

Ah I meant big wreck, just one guy is Canadian but it’s the main guy but iirc formed in the US.

FWIW, Thornley, the one Canadian guy, writes both music and lyrics for most songs, sings the songs, is a lead guitarist and sometimes produces - it's more like a Billy Corgan situation. The band also relocated to Toronto early on iirc.

The list is up to date. I don't get the Black Box nomination either--left it off for the moment.

It's primarily a pop poll, yes--whatever that means to you--but I know Oliver Shoerer's "Field of Stars" will be high on my list, and that's not even remotely so. Feel free to add jazz, classical, or whatever, Sund4r.

I like this one. She lives in St. Marys (I think--maybe Stratford), where I am--saw her speak as part of an author's panel a couple of months ago.

What I meant to mention was that Jim Kale was in the band after leaving the Guess Who. (Which reminded me of Brave Belt, Randy Bachman's post-Guess Who band in the early '70s--basically the same lineup as BTO.)

I asked my friend Howard, who edits the SOCAN magazine, to suggest some nominations that I just added to the spreadsheet. (He's very big on Jessie Reyez and Julien Taylor.) Every Canadian song ever has now been nominated, except for, I'm happy to say, Northern Lights' "Tears Are Not Enough," which showed that we can come up with well-meaning songs just as annoying as its British and American equivalents.

I'll start a voting thread with an email address and point schemes tomorrow morning.

After adding those and cleaning up some duplication this morning--not recognized by Google Sheets if even an apostrophe is stylistically different--that brings us to an almost too-perfect 1,001 nominations, ready to be turned into the book 1,001 Canadian Pop Songs You Have to Hear Before You Die.

I liked Crowbar's Bad Manors and everything I heard of King Biscuit Boy with them (xgau called him "Canada's Paul Butterfield and I mean that as a compliment"), also his s/t album produced by Allen Toussaint, also Ronnie Hawkins' version of "Matchbox" w KBB and Duane Allman, but the only qualified(?) single that comes to mind is:
King Biscuit Boy - New Orleans

The two Crowbar songs I know are "Oh, What a Feeling" (obviously) and "Million Dollar Weekend," which I recall as sort of being part of the whole back-to-the-'50s story that was everywhere in the early '70s.
