The spreadsheet is just a placeholder for now, with a list of Canadian artists I cut-and-paste from somewhere. I'll start inputting actual songs over the weekend.

I always base the points for my polls on the old Pazz & Jop system:

Definitely Canadian. There are lots of gaps on the spreadsheet right now--just got it from some site with a list of Canadian artists.

I hope the artists you mention don't dominate--I'll limit myself to one Neil and one Joni (not a huge band fan)--but, depending upon how many people vote, they could. Their votes could be split among so many different songs, though, that they don't.

I checked Buffalo Springfield last night, thinking they started out Canadian but then lost people for their second and third albums, but no: 3/5 Canadian, same for the second, then--after adding Richie Furay--3/6 for the third.

Surreal personal connection: when I was proofreading advertising flyers for Woolco-Woolworth in the late '80s, my supervisor was a guy who used to manage Fraser & DeBolt.

You're right--it was Messina who was added, not Furay (but still 3/6). Checked Steppenwolf, and they were 3/5 Canadian on their first album, at least. I'll check their makeup for the nominated songs.

I know the "half-Canadian" benchmark for bands seems arbitrary--it is--but you have to draw that line somewhere. A band with only one Canadian wouldn't seem right.

Just thought about Heart...2/5 Canadian only. Should they be an exception, seeing as the two Canadians basically are the band? (Sorry, anonymous male Heart guys.)

Definitely a pun (the whole CanCon thing came in around 1970). I think Barry Harris, who basically was Kon Kan, was a DJ at CIUT once.

Ann Wilson was born in San Diego, and Nancy Wilson was born in San Francisco. Neither ever resided in Canada. Growing up, they moved around various US military bases (Taiwan and Panama among them) before the family settled in suburban Seattle.

also want to add that as underwhelming as this band was – as a lot of the Can-rock/pop of it's time was – 54-40's "Blame Your Parents" slaps.

I checked after Brimstead's post, and I think--95% sure--that the one I liked at the time (and gave a 6.5 or 7.0 to in Radio On) was "Nothing Broken But My Heart."

I liked Crowbar's Bad Manors and everything I heard of King Biscuit Boy with them (xgau called him "Canada's Paul Butterfield and I mean that as a compliment"), also his s/t album produced by Allen Toussaint, also Ronnie Hawkins' version of "Matchbox" w KBB and Duane Allman, but the only qualified(?) single that comes to mind is:

The two Crowbar songs I know are "Oh, What a Feeling" (obviously) and "Million Dollar Weekend," which I recall as sort of being part of the whole back-to-the-'50s story that was everywhere in the early '70s.
