16?

Im going with Chrome

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:31 (two years ago)

Tbh, I've heard fewer than half of these. The rest I'm not sure I'd ever think to listen to without some prompting like this. Oddly, I was wondering if anyone would list something really "outsider," I think Jandek fits that bill.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 01:31 (two years ago)

xxp it really doesn't! I fucking love that record so much and could have added another half-dozen reggae classics easy

Fibbers easy

orifex, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 04:37 (two years ago)

if someone hasn’t heard the Fibbers, all you have to do is play “Dragon Lady” and they’re sort of stunned into silence— i remember the first time i heard that track was on a mixtape that an ilxor of old ( username “eppy” ) made for me when i was entering 9th grade and he was my camp counselor. the tape totally changed my life, but that song in particular just blows me away, every time. i still have the tape— i should poll it. it’s good!

cajunsunday, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 10:53 (two years ago)

Mohnomishe? Not only have I heard it I've got it, sandwiched between the two bits of hardboard, I got it cheap in a Virgin Megastore sale.

The Geraldine Fibbers are a band I've known the name of for 20+ years but never listened to. This album is a monster! It's almost 8am, but it's making me want a beer.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 11:52 (two years ago)

Edinburgh Virgin Megastore. It had this "European" section that always seemed ultra mysterious to me. In hindsight it was a lot of Rock In Opposition, Kraut and stuff like Henri Texier but it also had all the Zoviet France early releases and I was obsessed by them even though I literally knew nothing about them. But, I couldn't afford them until finally Mohnomishe was in the sale and I got it ultra cheap and had a damascene moment when I got it home.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 12:04 (two years ago)

This is my favourite list so far, but it's fairly easily Acnalbasac Noom for me.

I think I'm aware of all the band's mentioned apart from a couple. Have seen more than I have material by. May even have flacs of things I don't have physically. Have or had 16 listed think I have other titles by several too.

Interesting to see 17 Pygmies and no Savage Republic. Think I have 2 different releases of that too.

Stevo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 05:49 (two years ago)

May have been turned onto Die Kreuzen by Kim.Gordon wearing their t-shirt on early London dates. An afternoon gig at Bay 63 springs to mind. But did love the ferocious vocals and the sleeve artwork.

& the idea of them being a bunch of lowriders who couldn't spell. Was that down to Byron Coley review or something.

Stevo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 05:55 (two years ago)

Great list! I'm on about 1/3 to 1/2, I think but would need a close examination...

Ordinarily *Private Parts* would have my vote but have to throw one to *Live Low to the Earth in the Iron Age* which is just a unique, elemental record.

(picnic, lightning) very very frightening (Chinaski), Thursday, 24 August 2023 08:33 (two years ago)

"this whole phenomenon is cringy enough"

Fascinated by the nostalgia I feel when I'm reminded of a time and mindset when sincere participation in positive group activity made my nonconformist mechanism kick in and insist I must be averse to it, whatever it is, I just know I don't like it - cause I do my own thing as an independent thinker or because all this positivity is suspicious or because it's inherently dorky to want to fit in etc.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:58 (two years ago)

did any of the peace punks hate cacophony for being too fun / indulgent / esoteric / based on the ultimate reactionary / etc? I just don't understand how *this* came out of *that* scene

penis envy makes more sense in that context but it's sooo much better than it needed to be it's pretty incredible - I haven't heard many later indie pop/rock artists citing it as important to them but I can hear a lot of seeds being planted - by far the most musically/thematically coherent and successful statement crass ever made

I feel like the songs on the pope one go on for too long - could've benefited from stopping when they ran out of words (à la Pink Flag) rather than repeating ad nauseum, though that was probably the point of the whole exercise.

Muslimgauze has a vast and amazing catalog. Zul'm is one of the better entry points I think

Dan S, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 00:33 (two years ago)

agreed, that seems to be a consensus pick and with good reason, I was only gonna pick one so...

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 00:34 (two years ago)

shameless bump for votes, 4 more days

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Friday, 1 September 2023 01:11 (two years ago)

Black Flag - Damaged, This Heat - Deceit, Current 93 - In Menstrual Night, Coil - Love's Secret Domain, Gas - Koenigsforst, Psychic TV - Dreams Less Sweet are all amazing albums. I would pick different Current 93 and Coil albums, but I think this is a good list

Zoviet*France has a very enigmatic catalog, along with The Hafler Trio. Apparently both of them originated in a place called Newcastle on Tyne

there are others I love on here too, like Hüsker Dü, Pharaoh Sanders, Brian Eno

Dan S, Friday, 1 September 2023 01:50 (two years ago)

Unrest - Imperial F.F.R.R. seems to me to be echoed later by Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago. I love both of those albums

Dan S, Friday, 1 September 2023 02:07 (two years ago)

Went for Acnalbasac Noom here. I should listen to more of these, though (learned of Rudimentary Peni via the Osees' cover of "Sacrifice" last year and have been meaning to check them out since).

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 00:10 (two years ago)

this is a fun list. I only know about half the stuff on here, but it makes me want to check out the other half.
voted thinking fellers.

enochroot, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:26 (two years ago)

Number of albums heard: 9

Favourite: We’re Only In It For The Money over Yeti

Least-favourite: Damaged (not bad, I prefer My War)

Nicest surprise: Asylum!

Unheard, but most want to hear: several - Slapp Happy, Coil, Chrome, Mekons etc.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:27 (two years ago)

I really like Nurse With Wound’s early albums like Chance Meeting On a Dissecting Table, Merzbild Schwet, and Homotopy To Marie.

Automating Vol. 1 is a good compilation of the early stuff.

Salt Marie Celeste was released much later, in 2003, but it has become my favorite NWW album, an ambient recording of a creaking wooden ship about to sink

Dan S, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:34 (two years ago)

not my favorite album here but voting PTV because i've known our interests overlap but i couldn't define where or how and PTV nails it. Also because it's the only one with a bonus disc of Tibetan thigh bone music. My second fave album of theirs, too (after Allegory & Self).

Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:55 (two years ago)

a bonus disc of Tibetan thigh bone music

that's Force The Hand Of Chance you are referring to I think, but DLS also came w/an extra EP of "The Full Pack" which is incredible

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 01:57 (two years ago)

oh i am p sure there's a RI of Dreams with the thigh bone disc... maybe i'm wrong. anyway thought this was gonna be full of stuff i never heard of honestly, but i know like half of these and heard of most... i will generally check out anything you rave about, you and rushomancy and maybe a couple of other people here

Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 02:00 (two years ago)

no you're right, i don't have the thigh bone disc with it.

Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 02:06 (two years ago)

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 00:14 (two years ago)

One of these days I expect to finally get what all the fuss is about for Husker Du.

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 01:05 (two years ago)

hahaha well, way i see it, we have two possibilities here - 1) I got distracted by a door buzzer or a cat being cute or something and forgot to vote or 2) the unhinged husker du mob threatened deadly force against me and my loved ones if didn’t change my vote

i won’t cunning any further. i’ve done my research, now you do yours.

x-post

Poor Easter everywhere!

ian, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 13:03 (two years ago)

The Mekons deserved better. That's a pretty good album, but it probably didn't help that the Mekons made at least a couple of greater albums that were a cut above this one.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 22:15 (two years ago)

ha I beg to differ! Curse is definitely my favorite
