It's nice to see ILM so busy

...for a change. Busiest I've seen it in a decade.

I know polls are not everyone's cuppa tea, but hopefully some good conversations over the albums chosen will be sparked.

Good work ILM!

Busy clippers

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:06 (two years ago)

ILM has way more active threads than ILE at the moment. Posting about music is much less stressful than about politics. Certainly much more fun.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:07 (two years ago)

Yeah, it's good!
I'm not voting on the polls but it's great for discovering new albums, and also getting a sense of what various folks look for in music...

less stressful? we're basically all on the same page politically but my aesthetic daggers are drawn let me tell you

I agree, all these lists have been really fun to look at and given me some ideas for new stuff to listen to, which is what this board is all about.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:24 (two years ago)

i've been here about a week and it's really nice to see that such an old and venerable corner of the internet is still alive + kickin. i stumbled on it like a year ago, forgot what it was called, then rediscovered it while reading retromania which was written like 13 years ago!

only wish i'd discovered it sooner. been a long time since i've actually enjoyed talking to strangers on the internet

tremolo, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:27 (two years ago)

I'm enjoying the activity too and have a list of albums to listen to that keeps growing, which can only be a good thing.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:36 (two years ago)

I did listen to Mercyful Fate's "Dont Break The Oath" for the first time last night after seeing it on Neandarthal's list.....which was nice

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:03 (two years ago)

i think everyone saw i was posting again and said "quick! look busy!" as well you should. things getting a LITTLE too sleepy around here. i don't really do polls but i did vote in two of these polls. for kyuss and space needle. for years i hid polls and never knew what anyone was talking about when they brought stuff up from poll threads. i was a happy idiot.

i am enjoying this sudden bloom of nice low-stakes threads where ppl can politely shoot the breeze about music they are enthusiastic about, cant even begin to comprehend why ppl wouldnt like it, we should make this a regular seasonal thing

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:46 (two years ago)

Someone less lazy than me should make a thread compiling all of these polls into one thread. I’m having trouble following them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:21 (two years ago)

Trouble is they all end on different dates, but I'm going to try and keep an eye and note the winners of each one so we can do a poll of those

Honestly I think ILM is underrated (including by the folks who post here)… there’s no place else that I’ve found decent conversation about music, and I’ve tried, believe me I’ve tried.

Clientless (Scooter's Version) (morrisp), Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:48 (two years ago)

Also, welcome tremolo. Like others have said, I don't know where people go to find out and discuss music and pop culture and, well, Everything, but ILX is the best place I know of

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:11 (two years ago)

Don't settle for less than 5%.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:18 (two years ago)

Yeah dog latin! I meant a thread titled like…

The thread to archive all the polls of personal top lists

I know there’s been several previous ones too (frogbs, bradnelson, peace man… come to mind… I guess I somehow made mine too but I went by decade not all time)… so maybe if I have some time I’ll try to organize the current ones and see which previous ones I can find to post links into a single thread for reference and easy accesibility I guess….

I mean idk if I’m the only one interested in consulting and researching albums from all these lists in the future lol… right now is way too much to even start focusing on what’s catching my interest.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 02:27 (two years ago)

Surprised forks hasn't compiled a spotify playlist of every album on the lists

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:12 (two years ago)

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:43 (two years ago)

I hope the rude response to the ILM 77 tracks rollout wasn’t a part of forks leaving. That was lame

H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:44 (two years ago)

eh he tried a slower rollout and asked if it was better some said yes some said no. can't remember it getting particularly heated.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 24 August 2023 12:55 (two years ago)

aww, I didn't know he quit. He should come back!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:04 (two years ago)

No… I think he was somewhat disappointed about some complaints of how he had to delay the rollout several times but iirc he kind of got in a disagreement over a movie on ILE - not 100% sure as I very rarely visit that part of the forum - and added to the fact that he had been extremely busy at time he just left… no idea if he’ll ever come back or if this is just a hiatus.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:34 (two years ago)

Sometimes it takes just one last straw for these things to happen. It's unlikely to be just one thing. But yeah, that's a big shame

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:42 (two years ago)

Moka is right; it was the new Top Gun, though I assume dog latin is correct about the bigger picture

the idea that this is the busiest ILM has been in ten years is simply factually wrong imo. but if people are enjoying these threads, that's cool. I would probably have done one myself if I wasn't so busy this week. don't miss the dance music historiography discussion on the mix CD thread though, that's more my ilm sweet spot at any rate

rob, Thursday, 24 August 2023 13:48 (two years ago)

It’s natural to disagree over things in here… some people love passionately things, some people hate passionately the same things. The only thing ilm agrees on is that Pink Floyd rules.

But yeah I don’t think it was fighting over Top Gun the only reason… just the last drop.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 August 2023 14:06 (two years ago)

That's why I'm hoping someone compiles a playlist, I've already lost track of (and been overwhelmed by) all the stuff I want to listen to *right now*, the result being a sort of choice paralysis that sent me, inexplicably, to Robert Plant's "Manic Nirvana" this morning.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 August 2023 18:03 (two years ago)

in all seriousness though the polls have a big community feel and don't have the intensity of some of the more analytical music threads, so it just has a feel of a bunch of long time internet friends chatting casually about music which tbh with life as shitty as it is for so many of us right now...is a-ok with me.

(not that there's anything wrong with the more analytical threads because I love those!)

Very sad to hear about Forks and hope it's just a break. I have had to step away for a bit too. Don't think I ever made it past a month. But like others have said in this thread, this place is special and puts up with all my bonehead grammar errors. i honestly hate it, but i was a hypocrite and fell into the current polling scene. making it my business to respond to everyone in turn.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 25 August 2023 05:32 (two years ago)

i have a love hate relationship with the internet, which is to say i think i’ve gone through a similar sort of evolution in my thinking about it which has gone like: “this is the best shit ever!” (initial facebook release) → “the internet is literally doing 9/11 on human culture” (sometime just after pandemic lockdowns ended) → “it is what it is”

ppl say plenty of snide things all the time on internet (irl too) but i haven’t seen a whole lot on ilx lately that i’d call outright abusive or toxic, just some ppl (including me) who at times seemed kinda stressed and upset and prone to escalating arguments.

i know there’s a lot i can do to build my own resilience around ppl’s tossed off snark (and to resist the impulse to be a jerk) … i just don’t think it’s found on internet. so i think i’ve figured that its best parts (like ilm) can be really engaging and fun but no substitute for real life validation (which was probably true even back in the republic of letters or any life of the mind)

so to sum up i used to be kinda alarmed when ppl took breaks from internet but now i tend to think it’s pretty healthy, esp if you can use that space to build on whatever you’ve got going on outside internet so that internet doesn’t bug you so much

predict he might be back after throwing a few sick pots

the polls are terrible

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2023 06:14 (two years ago)

come on, doing polls instead of t/s threads has been terrible since day 1, at least these have some personality

also if you think it’s easy to make a good poll, it’s not!! i’ve been struggling for months to create a well-formed “ukg: girls like us vs girls like you” poll, but can’t figure out how because the b15 project track is called “girls like us” but the mj cole remix is “fuck me pumps”

the late great, Friday, 25 August 2023 06:21 (two years ago)

don't think of them as polls, just think that folks are sharing their favourite albums and you get to discover some great new music and/or get a better sense of what people like, so when they recommend stuff later you know whether their taste aligns with yours...

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Friday, 25 August 2023 07:26 (two years ago)

i'm not saying they're bad lists/polls per se, i just hate seeing lists

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2023 07:36 (two years ago)

ah yeah ok well i personally definitely hate making lists

the late great, Friday, 25 August 2023 07:48 (two years ago)

It sure beats doomposting about the spectre of Trump on politics thread. That's not good for the mental health. I had to avoid politics threads over the past years. ILM is much more fun. Politics is an irl thing and on ILX I kinda want to escape it?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 08:09 (two years ago)

One good thing about polls/lists is that on a site like this one with its dwindling userbase you get a better chance at discussion, because there's more ppl with stuff to say about at least one of 50 albums, while if you made a thread about just one album discussion would prob die down much quicker.

The other side of this is that discussion of albums in poll threads will tend towards the fragmented.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 25 August 2023 08:15 (two years ago)

I jumped on the train because I saw it as an opportunity for re-introduction. Some people here know each other personally, for writers their taste shines through their line of work, for some others through being very organized and engaged posters here. For the timid rest of the bunch, a quick top 50 is an easy way to say "hello, this is me / oh hi, I like your list a lot".

By all means, I wouldn't have ILM without the curmudgeon reactions, but also not without the periodic sharing of love and everyone patting each other on the back.

Nabozo, Friday, 25 August 2023 08:37 (two years ago)

wouldn't mind so much if they were

25 options max

First time back here in months. I don't like fads, probably because I was never good at yoyos or chatter rings. So I think I'll come back in another few months once (if...?) personal poll season is over.

PS the Beths are still overrated.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 25 August 2023 10:52 (two years ago)

more conceptual/thematic than the 'all time faves' majority

tbf i didn't do an alltime list to avoid being like the other lists. I did 2 genre ones, but I think more people are interested in the all time ones because more people can associate with the music ?
Whereas niche genres have a select audience so nobody cba engaging with them? (plus theres a lot of polls out there)

I wonder if there had just been no polls but just a bunch of threads with each list on them, then there would be fewer complaints? Personally I think its the poll aspect thats driving the engagement.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 11:06 (two years ago)

Nobody's forcing anyone to get involved in the polls. It wasn't an orchestrated effort either, just people having fun and listing their faves

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Friday, 25 August 2023 11:09 (two years ago)

I was going to go do a search on the latest created thread sand then do a thread archiving them, but I'm going away for a few days and cramming to get work finished, so if I do it it may have to wait. Conscious of letting it slip by though. Moka's right, it would be good to compile the links into one thread.

H.P, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:19 (two years ago)

Album-centric music fandom is mostly dead safe from some key releases by the biggest pop stars either way. I’d love for music released strictly thru single / ep formats to make a comeback but those few albums per year that get promoted fight for streaming numbers and will bloat their releases to trick it - reason why Drake and Bad Bunny release like 25 songs per year.

I kinda agree tho, I stopped making my own best albums lists since 2016 or so and switched to favorite songs instead. Some of my favorite songs of all time come from albums I haven’t even heard.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:22 (two years ago)

I my poll, I addressed the fact I don't listen to music via albums as much as I used to - mostly because of streaming, playlisting, compiling, DJing etc.

This more track-centric approach has affected my tastes and the music I listen to, with things veering much more towards dance music and dancehall-adjacent sounds where it's more about individual tunes and moments than album-length statements.

That's not to say I don't listen to album-oriented music any more, but due to the convenience of things like Spotify and a dwindling attention span, I tend to listen to an album maybe once or twice, grab the few standout songs I like, and put them on a playlist.

And that's fine, but I should remember that some music is intended to be heard in the context of an album. There is an art to the making of an album as opposed to a bunch of songs.

So really this week has been really nice in reminding me of that - to keep my finger off the shuffle or skip buttons and just listen to things all the way through.

I've discovered new things, but it's also made me go back to music I'd completely forgotten about.

And what's the harm? This little craze will be over pretty soon, but there'll be a listening archive for weeks, if not years to come

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:36 (two years ago)

That said I don’t mind lists. I love them actually. I don’t think they’re set in stone… someone might say “these are my 10 favorite things” and a week later change their mind.

I do love them because it compiles and makes it easier for me to find something I’ll like, more than reading thru 1000 reviews. If someone makes a list of idk 100 songs and there’s several in there which surprise me because I love as well and I rarely see mentioned I’ll end up searching and listening the other songs.

Sometimes they’re plenty useful too for finding music completely outside your comfort zone. If someone lists idk “10 essential death metal cumbia eps” it makes it easy to pick two or three from the list and see if it’s your thing and they’re supposedly careful picked and recommended from a bigger list.

The lists I do dislike are the canonical lists that magazines create but maybe they annoy me because it’s always the same sacred cows that newer generations care about less each day so they serve no purpose.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 25 August 2023 13:40 (two years ago)

I dunno. I a have notepad file of names of artists/albums to check out - new, old whatever. It just got 30x bigger over the last couple of days and it’s fun as fuck checking it all out

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:41 (two years ago)

Anything that can be in any ilxors top 50 albums is worth listening too. I have been having fun listening to other albums and am a little giddy knowing that I have enough albums to check out here to last me a lifetime.

H.P, Friday, 25 August 2023 13:46 (two years ago)

Oh yeah I love personal lists. Whenever pitchfork or rolling stone or whatever make their eoy or eod lists I mostly just glance half interested through them, but the real meat is in each writer’s list when available. That’s where the actual interesting picks usually are.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 25 August 2023 14:13 (two years ago)

I hope the rude response to the ILM 77 tracks rollout wasn’t a part of forks leaving. That was lame

yes, that was hard to watch, and esp rude when someone has put in an enormous amount of free work to try to make things better for other people, not just that time but many other times over the years. a sense of entitlement to free work that someone else is doing is a major party foul. hopefully forks will come back sometime soon

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 25 August 2023 16:31 (two years ago)

i'm kind of ambivalent on the polls! i think they will one day be very useful as a marker of not just where a specific user's taste was at a given point of time, but also as a community. at the moment it's a lot and i'm kind of in a mode where i focus in on a handful of recordings for days or weeks at a time and really love them inside out, so i'm really just looking for one or two solid recommendations rather than hundreds of them. but for those one or two recs, a great resource!

i guess the way to search for these in the future will be "50"?

The way I observed the forks thing guy down was that he was saying something like "I am a pretty interesting, dude, yay forks!" - maybe he was having a bit of a manic episode, or coming out of a bit of a slump?- and people went after him for being insufficiently 'umble, which seemed kind of short-sighted, to say the least.

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:01 (two years ago)

I think when I first loosely started a list, the first 5 or so I would say were definitive in my top 10, but I’m too old at this point to agonize placement.

For me, it’s been more of a fun surprise at a particular artist’s album placing on a list. I think I’ve seen a couple of lists with REM’s Out of Time placing, which pleases me even though I personally wouldn’t place it as their crowning achievement. Little things like that have me wanting to go back and reconsider/rediscover things I’ve slept on.

fwiw the system used to allow you to vote as many times you wanted as long as your votes were paced a certain interval (one week? two weeks?) apart. but at least one poster abused the system by voting 10+ times in polls with distant closing dates, so the mods may have tightened up the polling regulations since I regularly pulled that shit

You can roll threads, y'know.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 14:46 (one year ago)

not sure about the terminology, but doesn't ilx already truncate very long threads? when i click the giant pitchfork thread, i see the first 50 posts, then "Skipping 21291 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.", then the most recent 50 posts.

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 14:52 (one year ago)

seems weird to say that there isn't much reason to start new threads when so many ilm threads are about particular artists or albums. if someone is excited about a new artist or album or song, i'd much rather see a new thread about it than have it buried on some rolling genre thread, in part bc the new thread will actually get my attention when i'm scrolling sna.

jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:58 (one year ago)

There have also been a few threads started on “general” topics in the past few days (one just a few minutes ago)! Seems like novel topics are still out there… or older threads exploring them, if they exist, aren’t worth trying to dig up.

Disappointing cantaloupe (morrisp), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:05 (one year ago)

i was _this_ close to starting a "bands that..." thread last night. very glad that i didn't though (it was "bands/artists you've heard every single second of recorded music by")

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:14 (one year ago)

at first i thought it would be a way of showing bands that some people are REALLY into, and maybe there'd be some surprising answers. but then i remembered that among music listeners, especially passionate ones, there are a ton of people who really have listened to every single second of recorded music by hundreds of different bands, and people who make a point of tracking down every last rare thing just to know that they've done it. so, maybe less of a passion thing than a collector/obsessive mentality

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:15 (one year ago)

as i idled on the Post New Question page, i imagined intrigued answers, angry answers, flippant answers, funny ones, antagonistic, and no answers at all. i considered the grateful dead answer, wondering if live recordings should count with a band like the dead, and then someone who claimed to have listened to all of the grateful dead live recordings, all of them, and that made me want to post it. then, i sneezed violently and spilled coffee all over the place, and my goldfish had died. terrifying

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:19 (one year ago)

jaymc OTM. I like many of the "rolling" genres, but rarely am I tempted to click on those threads because I usually don't feel I'm into them ENOUGH to really join in with them. And often it's just people sharing a YouTube and then moving on. I miss the days when albums or even individual tracks would have someone stanning for them enough that it merited a thread

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:22 (one year ago)

This is a good point. Individual artist or track threads are good. Now that I am thinking about this, I remember trying to deviate from the rolling ILB thread and starting a thread for an individual book but it really wasn't worth it *sigh*

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:25 (one year ago)

Right, it does. But if you're interested in reading/searching anything from more than 30 days ago, then that thread becomes basically un-usable.

I've never understood the bias against thread proliferation tbh.

enochroot, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:38 (one year ago)

ah, that's true (about searching for something in a huge thread) -- although, i never use it, but you can turn off images in ilx preferences, which would make the loading time substantially faster.

but yeah otm about thread proliferation, the more the better

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:43 (one year ago)

You can just expand the thread if you’re on the Web (admittedly it’s much clunkier in Zing).

I usually stick to the rolling threads (don’t create ones for new artists and certainly not tracks), although maybe there’d be more discussion if I did. I wonder who’s the most prominent artist who doesn’t have their own thread.

Disappointing cantaloupe (morrisp), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:44 (one year ago)

You can even make a single artist thread and post by yourself until maybe somebody else eventually shows up.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 September 2023 16:00 (one year ago)

And also cut and paste posts embedded in other, more rolling threads.

brimstead, Monday, 4 September 2023 18:42 (one year ago)

I think 20 years ppl treated threads like we treat tweets now, and perhaps also like blog posts back then, where people want to 'own' the means of discussion for a while. Also perhaps searching was not so efficient and reliable back then. This flipped at some point with rolling threads absorbing a lot of the energy.

Just ocurred to me it might be funny/useful if you could go to a page of active users, click on any ilxor and get all their recent posts across ilx and this were to become a more popular gateway than New Answers.
