99. Pavement - "Grounded"

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's more where those titles came from James. Alot of what those dudes wrote seems to have been informed in some way by narcotic indulgences. Yeah, they're a Californian psyche outfit, roughly active from 67-69. It's sundrenched, hazy la la la acid soaked etc. great stuff and when they get it right, they fucking rock. Guitarist John Merrill, bassist Al Brackett, and second drummer Jim Voight were with the Ashes originally and Merrill shares vocal duties with Sandi Robison. Psyche guru Gary Usher (Sagittarius) produced their second record 'The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Is Speading' which has some great stuff on it and 'The Great Conspiracy' is also worth checking (there's a CD comp which includes both albums plus outakes and B-sides, floating about).

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

100. Bob Dylan - "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Musical youth???? Ew.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a great song! Plus, subversive! It's probably the only song on this list that went to #1 on the pop charts.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

since we already have a Cypress Hill record, nickalicious, I'm-a bumpin' the dylan up to 95, and here's a new 100:

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this list is even more rockist than the mojo one
It got better second half, I think. Oh and Musical Youth was a great choice.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone on this thread must have something interesting to say about Roy Harper...

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember hearing "Pass the Dutchie" when I was younger and asking what it meant, and some adult told me that it meant that in Holland people drive on the left side of the road, so you pass on the left hand side, or something like that.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if you're going to include Musical Youth, you should also mention the original song -- which WAS about marijuana -- "Pass the Kouchie" by the Mighty Diamonds.

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

A "dutchie", by the way, is a cooking pot. "Kouchie" is a pipe.

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they changed the word to make the song more chart-friendly, but I think the implication is still pretty obvious, whatever word they were using.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What, are you implying all dreadlocked young black men go around in gangs sharing pots of stew?

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

How could you forget:

101.) XTC -- Grass
102.) Dead Kennedies -- Too Drunk to Fuck
103.) Ramones -- Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that's the literal meaning, but if you remake a song about drugs, and change one word, the word referring to the drug, can you really claim that the song now has nothing whatsoever to do with drugs?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

this list is even more rockist than the mojo one
It got better second half, I think. Oh and Musical Youth was a great choice.

i saved it just in time, jeff w.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right of course, o nate. I was only joking.

Would you also say that the Butthole Surfer's "Sweat Loaf" still refers to sweet leaf?

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I think so. I've only heard that song once though.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Remak, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

drugs songs suck ass, the best one is "medication" by damien jurado cos it's not about, like, y'know, woah, man, creativity, mind warp, fields of love, man, woah, but about over-weight housewives, discontent, with mild myopia and dyspepsia OR the shift in the social make-up of drug use OR the increasing prevalence in society of depression and the effect it has on the social characterisation of drugs OR quaaludes and mogadon not marijuana-bliss. i said as much when i entered the mojo competition, haha, i did.

david h (david h), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Elliott Smith drug classics :
- Needle in the Hay
- True Love (new song)

- King's Crossing (new song)
"it's a christmas time
and the needles on the tree
a skinny santa is bringing something to me
his voice is overwhelming, but his speech is slurred
and i only understand every other word
'open your parachute and grab your gun
falling down like an omen, my setting son
read the part and we turn out fine
it's a hell of a role if you can bring it alive'
but i don't care if i fuck up
i'm going on a date with a rich white lady
ain't life great?
give me one good reason not to do it"

- White Lady Loves You More
- Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands (though this one is more about people trying to manage someone else's drug problem)
