let's talk about punk bands/artists and their music, especially new releases!

alpine static, Monday, 1 January 2024 10:37 (one year ago)

these days, it is only appropriate to start off with a new album from a band out of the fertile scene in Melbourne, Australia:

Split System's Vol. II, out in February on Goner (U.S.) and Drunken Sailor (EU)
Classic, straight-ahead garage-punk, played fast, bouncy and super catchy.

alpine static, Monday, 1 January 2024 10:47 (one year ago)

also, new full-length out Friday on Sorry State Records from Cleveland weirdos Pulsating Gore:

No announcement yet but based on a what I've seen online Uranium Club should have a new LP this year, finally.

Jouster, Tuesday, 2 January 2024 05:49 (one year ago)

1000% on board with this

(Uranium Club get a mention there, I gotta check them out)

also I was told via a band member that there is a new Skull Cult EP coming in 2024, they are so good

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 7 January 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

Uranium Club is a very good (and fun) live band, would love a chance to get to see them again. I think this album is a pretty good start if you are looking to dive in:

they are great, weirdly not very active even here in Minneapolis I've only seen em a couple times

wow this Snooper album from 2023 is some of the greatest shit I have ever heard, also linked in that Spin article

https://snooper7.bandcamp.com/album/super-sn-per

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 10 January 2024 15:56 (one year ago)

yeah, they totally rule

i saw some "real" punks slagging them in the comments on that story - on social, the story itself doesn't have comments - proving exactly the points Snooper was trying to make, of course.

alpine static, Wednesday, 10 January 2024 20:08 (one year ago)

i get why people like the Snooper, it’s just not my thing.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 15 January 2024 19:21 (one year ago)

good comp here w/ lots of those bands from that SPIN article, plus others that are in the same vein:

oh nice, would (re)buy

Pyrex is a cool band. Nice folks as well.

grandavis, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

They (Pyrex) are playing Total Punk Records' two-day festival in Portland in May, along with Itchy & the Nits, Retail Simps, Human Eye, Sick Thoughts, Tyvek and more:

It's sold out (venue holds 200ish), but mentioning here in case anyone wants to make the effort.

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 20:39 (one year ago)

that's cool, I am very close but not gonna try for soldout tix

go Portland!

yeah, Billiam is sort of a baby/rising folk hero in that scene ... i think he said he has a full-length coming out on ETT this year, i would not be surprised if he *relatively speaking* blows up a bit

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 22:40 (one year ago)

Cleveland's The Missed headlined, really fun stuff, especially love the parts when this speeds up, she can really play, other songs she was doing almost J. Mascis stuff, lots of hooks

They are playing in Portland in early March with Prison Affair, Nick Normal (?), and The Gobs, I am prob going

"as to"

dead precedents (sleeve), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 22:17 (one year ago)

hi all - introducing myself after not-posting here in something like 15 years. anyway, I'm hoping it isn't bothersome to just jump in...

I was really excited to see the deluxe bias label come back with a couple of new releases last week after a dead-quiet 2023. this etiquette tape is definitely up my alley: short, brutal, self-consciously bone-headed... I love how this stuff takes advantage of the tape form not only as a fetish object but as a kind of mitigating/obscuring factor in the sound itself - it gives me the same thrill of hearing some "forgotten"/lost blues or international recording (not to mention, like, pre-slanted&enchanted pavement). no idea if I'd connect with it live or in full fidelity.

https://deluxebias.bandcamp.com/album/etiquette-demo-db-25

in a similar vein, I still haven't gotten over this cryin' hand tape from late 2022... pretty sure it's the same guy behind the exceptional HOLOGRAM stuff (https://ironlungrecords.bandcamp.com/album/no-longer-human-lungs-183), not to mention a side player in other projects.

https://dreamhomemusic.bandcamp.com/album/laugh-now-house-10

also, I know it got a lot of burn on punk-oriented year-end lists, but I thought that fairytale album was beautiful, for those who might not've heard it. perfect balance of lightness and violence. the cavernous-sounding vocals are a dreamy touch, & not something I'd ordinarily be into.

https://warsnofairytale.bandcamp.com/album/shooting-star

anyway, thanks for the recommendations here so far - hoping again that I'm not intruding!

mike powell, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 23:25 (one year ago)

wow, i've been checking in every other month or so to DL and assumed they'd hung it up! great post, please keep posting for sure

budo jeru, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 23:35 (one year ago)

both of those Deluxe Bias tapes are already sold out! crazy how tapes have basically replaced 45s in this new scene for immediacy/urgency/relevancy

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Wednesday, 31 January 2024 02:16 (one year ago)

Yeah, Cryin' Hand has Brendan in it, who basically is Hologram by himself on record I believe. Luke, who does Divorce Horse with Brendan also, is in it too. They get up to a crazy amount of stuff so hard to keep up, but I generally like all of it! Hologram is very cool stuff.

Brendan plays live now with that band Black Button I posted about last year, and has a new band called Cicada too.

That Black Button record got put out on vinyl recently if anyone is interested. Definitely a record I listened to quite a bit last year, really love it. "Great Closing Sleep" is a track I get stuck in my head all the time: https://blackbuttonva.bandcamp.com/album/black-button-rejoice-undesirable-033

dead precedents (sleeve), Wednesday, 31 January 2024 22:01 (one year ago)

Hah yeah Richmond is a pretty good spot for this kinda thing. Brendan was a DC guy but moved there and a lot of cross-playing between those two places seems to be happening. Again, hard to keep up.

grandavis, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 22:14 (one year ago)

Richmond is cool, I was there for 18 hours last year and it was 18 of the best hours of 2023 for me.

Public Acid also from Richmond

going to see the Chisel on Sunday. supporting is a local hardcore band I like a lot called Plastics, they only have a 7" out https://crewcuts.bandcamp.com/track/nerve-pusher

Colonel Poo, Friday, 9 February 2024 22:39 (one year ago)

new Rude Television EP
https://rudetelevision.bandcamp.com/album/collection

and only out now but old/archival is the very cool Terminal Intensity tape/DL from Gulcher, this was Billy Nightshade's band in 1977-78 right before he joined The Gizmos, as they mutated from proto-punk to punk (or maybe he was the push in that direction), I always thought he was the coolest Gizmo and I treasure seeing their 1988 reunion in person.
https://thegizmos.bandcamp.com/album/tentatively-terminal-1977-1978

Soon Daryl and I realized it was easier to write our own songs than figure out ones by the Stones or Kinks. We found the process of writing songs in our own haphazard way! Gradually the songs got better and we decided it was time to put a band together!

I love Consensus Madness! recent discovery, they have a demo tape that rips as well

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:16 (one year ago)

have punk 7"s gotten expensive like non-punk 7"s? i don't even look at new 7"s most of the time because I feel like they're $10, and that seems like too much to me. but i'm old.

maybe the punk bands/labels have held the line?

alpine static, Thursday, 15 February 2024 17:26 (one year ago)

they are 7-8 bucks usually it seems?

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 15 February 2024 17:50 (one year ago)

I am doing almost exclusively tapes and downloads for 2024 punk stuff but I have already made a bunch of exceptions for 7"s (Skull Cult, Collate, Smirk, Billiam, etc)

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 15 February 2024 17:51 (one year ago)

depends on the label but prices have gone up a bit here yeah, £7-8 for a 7". but then inflation has been high so I don't think that's totally unreasonable

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 15 February 2024 17:56 (one year ago)

the bigger distros I follow have got a bit silly for LPs though, £25-35 is pretty common now and that does seem a bit much when other labels can do it for £14-18

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 25 February 2024 14:16 (one year ago)

I was coming to post about that Public Acid, too. I liked it! It definitely feels more metal than Condemnation, but it's cool how they manage to skirt catchiness without totally capitulating to standard songs or hooks. That Beat Session was great, I thought (https://publicacidshout.bandcamp.com/album/beat-session-vol-10).

Does anyone like Total Sham? I liked their last album, and the one that came out Friday sounded good on first couple of listens, too. I tend to like self-consciously stupid, negative stuff, and I appreciate how they capture classic hardcore with just the slightest touch of '70s rock but don't sound throwback per se. (https://utgrecords.bandcamp.com/album/lp-2)

In a not dissimilar vein, I also went back to that 2023 album from The Hell a couple of times last week. I think it's really good. There's something just slightly poppy/classic-rock about them that really leavens the sound for me. (https://notfortheweakrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-hell).

But my most-listened to thingy in this awful, excoriating, cathartic realm over the past few weeks has definitely been this Yambag EP from 2022. It almost reminds me a little of Naked City or Napalm Death or something like that. I don't find them pretentious at all, but they definitely like to shift tempo and feel a lot in pretty small spaces, and it's obvious that they can play straight when they want to. I love this band. (https://yambag.bandcamp.com/album/strength-in-nightmares)

mike powell, Sunday, 25 February 2024 15:30 (one year ago)

oh I liked that Yambag EP a lot, had forgotten about that

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 25 February 2024 17:34 (one year ago)

am going to 2 days of the Damage Is Done weekender in London this week.

Thursday is headlined by Fairytale, their album was one of my favourite releases of 2023. Saturday is headlined by Japanese crust legends Framtid which I'm really looking forward to. Also playing: Take It In Blood, Bulls Shit, Subdued, Ikhras, Violent Offence, Quarantine, The Flex, T.S. Warspite, The Annihilated, Stingray, Echo Chamber, Mazandaran, Desorden, Hellscape and Catastrophe. have seen several of those before but should be good.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 25 February 2024 17:38 (one year ago)

I love that I have never heard of any of those. so many punk bands out there!

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Sunday, 25 February 2024 17:40 (one year ago)

it's a little more hardcore-oriented that weekend. I think you might like Subdued, they are kind of dark heavy anarcho-punk. most of the other bands are straight up hardcore although I would recommend the Flex who one of my favourite UKHC bands

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 25 February 2024 17:46 (one year ago)

There's a new Yambag record that's supposed to come out soon too they put up a new track/video

Framtid!~ Sick.

Love that Total Sham sound, thanks Mike Powell!

Re: the Public Acid, I'm a little dubious about calling a thrashy hardcore record more "metal" just because there are a few blazing guitar solos, but point taken. I think it's as good as Condemnation. They really rip live, highly recommend it.

thank you for reminding me they have a new one out

was at the hardcore weekender last night, I mostly went to see Fairytale, half the supports were the karate in the pit type of thing which I'm not into, although I liked Bulls Shitt (crap name though) because they were pretty old school. tbh didn't think Fairytale were that good live but I think partly because they are pretty noisy and the mix was weird and seemed to turn into mush a lot which might not've been their fault.

I skipped today but tomorrow is the all-dayer with Framtid headlining so am looking forward to that. looks like most of the karate bands are playing earlier in the day at least

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 March 2024 02:10 (one year ago)

lol @ "karate bands", are people really pulling moves like that in pits these days?

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 2 March 2024 02:14 (one year ago)

― I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 2 March 2024 02:14 bookmarkflaglink

unfortunately yes, but it's mostly a kind of separate scene to the stuff I usually go to. this event is pretty big tent hardcore though so there's some meathead crowd killing type bands, old school hardcore punk, crust, anarcho etc. something for everybody

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 March 2024 02:29 (one year ago)

tbh I think the last time I spent a significant amount of time in the pit was the Circle Jerks in 2022. am old

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 March 2024 02:29 (one year ago)

i would never get in a pit ever again, the last two shows where I did were quite enough for me — both were Limp Wrist shows and the allure of being in a pit with a hundred other sweaty naked punk faggots is a bit too enticing to me

sleeve! i didn't see ya (that i know of) but i made it to the show.

loved Prison Affair and Cherry Cheeks, and The Gobs confirmed my belief that they are the greatest punk band in the history of the world.

(j/k, of course, but they did rule.)

alpine static, Thursday, 7 March 2024 00:41 (one year ago)

they totally fucking ruled

points in The Gobs favor:
1. all 3 members wore dark sunglasses on stage
2. crudely painted sheet backdrop with band logo motif
3. twice as loud as the other three bands, the only one I needed earplugs for
4. singer/bassist saying "oh no, I forgot to do the banter, banter banter banter"
5. killer guitarist doing wild digital effects shit as interstitials to the tunes
6. talked to them afterwards and as soon as I told them about my radio show and instead of 99% of band reactions where they say "oh let me send/give you something to play" The Gobs were like "ooh can we do one of those things that's like "THIS IS THE GOBS AND YOU'RE LISTENING TO...", I fuckin love it.

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 7 March 2024 00:52 (one year ago)

7. sounded vastly better live than on their deliberately muddy-sounding recordings

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 7 March 2024 00:53 (one year ago)

and yeah Cherry Cheeks killed it to, there was a moment near the end of their set where it all really seemed to click

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 7 March 2024 00:54 (one year ago)

oh and

8. best new drummer I have seen in a good long while, her name is Jolene!

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 7 March 2024 02:12 (one year ago)

#6 = so badass

#5 = i was right by him. at one point, he was making the sound of a toy laser gun into his pickups and looping it.

they also had one of those blow-up dancing guys like you see in front of car dealerships (but like 5 feet tall) and they'd modified it with an alien face and flipping middle fingers on both hands. i didn't even know it was there but as soon as they started playing, it filled with air and stood straight up. it was awesome.

alpine static, Thursday, 7 March 2024 05:46 (one year ago)

haha I forgot about that! I was in the back like an old punk.

they also have the best songs titles of any new band, I mean "Nuke The Sun"? I Wanna Fuck The Moon"? that shit is genius level.

I admit I am not as into this strain of punk. In some ways, a lot of the sounds that I enjoy in the punk/hc realm are overwhelmingly similar to the sounds that I enjoyed most as a teenager— grind, thrash, and Orange County hc alongside stuff like Born Against is my sort of sweet spot. Snotty punk a la the Gobs is fun live, but I never listen to it.

I guess mine would've been the Epifat type of NOFX-clone skate punk, I basically only listened to 70s-mid-80s punk/hc in the late 90s because of that stuff. never went to any punk gigs either, I thought all "modern" punk was rubbish. thanks to the internet and file-sharing I now know there was good stuff happening all through that era I just missed it all

Uranium Club played here (Sydney) last night… I went along mainly to see RMFC who are always great… hadn’t really gelled with the Uranium Club I had heard prior but they were super fun - well-judged mix of smart and dumb, clever song structures (Wire mention above was OTM) - got the crowd going, a terrific night

My timeline is as follows:

95– eleven years old, first issue of MRR. Really into the Dead Kennedys, the Buzzcocks, the Adverts, UK Subs, all the older UK stuff.

96- Bouncing Souls and Blanks 77, but yearning for more uh edgy and different stuff. Got into a lot of local punk and hardcore acts, like the Boils, Manual Seven, DisSucks, Plow United, 2.5 Children, Violent Society… the stuff associated with Creep Records and Corrupted Image records. My favorite band undoubtedly the Boils or The Showcase Showdown. My first zine reviewed in Punk Planet.

97- started ploughing through the crud and got into the 625/Slap-a-Ham stuff, along with everything on Outpunk and Havoc, as well as Los Crudos, Charles Bronson, etc. A lot of crust and peace punk stuff too. Totally obsessed with Dropdead, His Hero is Gone, and Kill the Man Who Questions.

98- I call this the Vermiform/HeartattaCk year— more into post-hardcore and shit like Submission Hold, as well as digging into the crust (Anti-Product) and noise (Bastard Noise and etc).

99- still into the same stuff as the year prior, but drifting a little— a camp counselor gave me a tape with a load of stuff on it like Big Black, Radiohead, Tom Waits, etc. I also became somewhat obsessed with REM’s early records.

2000- more heavily into jazz and mainstream rock music that I had neglected for my tween and early
teenage years, didn’t “forget” about the politics of punk and hardcore but simply lost interest— also tho this was the time of Limp Wrist’s beginnings, it was also really hard to be a gay teenager and a punk in Philly, especially where I went to school.

in 2009, my interest returned as I found myself broke and marginalized and in love with a queer punk boy, got deep in the scene again while still following other music, and continue to dip in and out as I see fit. i still listen to a lot of hardcore and punk, but yknow, not all the time, and i am certainly not the collector scum i was when i was a kid.

i do think things would be different if my punk record collection hadn’t burned up in a house fire in Ohio circa 2010– i probably would have a different grip on what i liked and didn’t like back then. but for now, a lot of it is just memories.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 23 March 2024 12:48 (one year ago)

so in other words: i have no idea what the white belt kids were/are, and i loathed emo… tho still have affection for the very early Orchid records and the first Boysetsfire record

table that's super interesting, those are years I wasn't always paying attention to punk, mine is kinda like:

1982: first Sex Pistols album, first Clash concert (their last US tour)
1983: heavily into Joy Division, Siouxsie, Gang Of Four, postpunk in general
early '84: shift to Dead Kennedys/Black Flag, first actual HC show (JFA, Sun City Girls, Mighty Sphincter, local HC band)
late 84: DRI, Suicidal, Minor Threat, Minutemen, all of it
late '85: starting listening to TG, PTV, Coil, etc
86: Sonic Youth rules my world
87-96 or so: noise/experimental snob
97-2001: reminded that there are other good genres out there, diversification
2001-2007: we booked punk/HC shows at our house, Tragedy, Submission Hold, From Ashes Rise, all the hits. Faggot! Clan Of The Bleeding Eye! Realicide! fun times.
2008-2023: not much really, lotta record collector rock
end of 2023: friend plays me the Liquids album, I realize there is a ton of great stuff out there again, I start buying tapes by the dozens

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 15:58 (one year ago)

I should also note that I always listened to Chumbawamba, Crass, Fugazi, and The Ex throughout this entire timeline

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 16:06 (one year ago)

interesting to see your travels through it, too— interestingly it was in 99 that I bought Goo at a flea market and became obsessed with SY, and then that sort of helped me into other punk-adjacent but not punk music. i was also really into G!YBE and Windy & Carl in the early 2000s

I will cosign this along with table and sleeve, but will also note that the notion of "punk is an attitude and not a genre," while cliched, is nevertheless very true. And on some level, my whole taste in music is kind of subconsciously founded on this, which is why I have opinions like "Louis Cole is punk." Feel free to dismiss, I was never a true punk anyhow.

I wouldn't say *all* of it, but a lot of it. Like, do I think there is a connection between the snide and sneering rampages of Jello and the DKs to the cool cocaine cynicism of Steely Dan? Fuck yeah there is. The 'Dan are extremely punk...that's just one example, of course, but the point rings true to me.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 17:50 (one year ago)

I had college radio punker friends who would enthusiastically proclaim that acts like Springsteen and Billy Joel were punk as fuck. We didn't always agree, but I can see it, at least with Springsteen. One of those guys is now my brother in law so the arguments have lasted and evolved over the years.

always thought that punk is one of the most aesthetically conservative (resistant to change, highly deferential to its own traditions) and minimalist (three chords, four-four, guitar-drum-bass) music genres. i kinda like that about it, but imo it’s stolen valor when punks try to claim actually formally innovative music (mingus, steely dan)

Snooper are playing in Brighton in September hurrah

I think I've raved about this band before on earlier threads - Electric Cowboy Club - they haven't put out any records yet but I think they have some tracks on bandcamp or soundcloud or something - they are a local band and are fucking brilliant live so not surprising but they sold out a decent sized venue tonight despite that. best gig for a while

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 March 2024 02:07 (one year ago)

first band was just one guy doing a kind of Messthetics UK DIY thing, finished with a cover of Sand In My Joints by Wire, then a goth band who made an impressive racket with just a bassist with a lot of FX pedals, then Electric Cowboy Club who are like a demented Cramps-type band, with a frontman to match, complete with Charlie Feathers covers, plus a load of noise and feedback. so basically made for me

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 March 2024 02:12 (one year ago)

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 March 2024 03:57 (one year ago)

This Bandcamp Friday, I finally bought the G.U.N. album from last July, which I liked a lot (and frankly think is way better than the "up the middle 80s USHC" pitch suggests) (https://sorrystaterecords.bandcamp.com/album/g-u-n). Also Lamictal's Hard Pill to Swallow, which I don't think is great per se but splits the difference between ugly and mean and eggy and springy in a way that I find irresistible (https://lamictal.bandcamp.com/album/hard-pill-to-swallow).

mike powell, Friday, 5 April 2024 14:13 (one year ago)

I saw Cock Sparrer tonight. Occasionally I wonder how come out of all the oi bands they can consistently sell out big venues while the likes of the Cockney Rejects have to play venues that hold a few hundred people. Then I see them and remember that it's because they're fucking awesome.

They have a new album out this week which they say is their last and it's pretty good but their previous one Forever is much better than a punk album by people in their late 60s gas any right to be

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 18 May 2024 23:13 (one year ago)

OK that was fucking great, they played everything mentioned above and more, the new songs didn't suck, band was tight, good sound, packed crowd in a 300-person venue

as soon as "Suspect Device" kicked in, myself and a woman at least my age to my left went down immediately from pit madness, good times

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Sunday, 19 May 2024 17:18 (one year ago)

Late night thoughts of an old punk after seeing Stiff Little Fingers in 2024:

I didn’t really hear much advance hype for this show, maybe I missed Instagram chatter, but it became clear as the day drew closer that this was a must see.

Like lots of other kids, i had my brain fried by “Alternative Ulster” back in the day, it remains one of the finest moments of incandescent punk protest to be put on record, by people who were living the words they sang. I love those first three albums, they hold up. (OK, really it’s the first one and the 3rd one, if there are any diehard Go For It fans out there I don’t know them).

Before I even went to the show, I was feeling that special high that one gets when you are fully aware that you are part of a community - I tried out a new restaurant (Yardy, for locals) and it turned out that I knew the bartender and a waiter already. Had some unbelievably great West Indies dishes, plus rum cocktails.

I had planned on just buying a door ticket, but it turned out that one of my oldest friends had a spare ticket. He lives here in town with me, although we both grew up in Virginia in the 80s. So it was him, me, his wife (a Eugene native and OG punk rocker), and their daughter’s fiance, her high school sweetheart but now it’s been almost a decade. The daughter herself had bailed, I was the beneficiary. I remember her being born, now I am going to her wedding, these are the kind of landmark events I think about all the time these days, the connections of community.

It turns out that Jake Burns had all that on his mind as well. During their (incendiary, awesome) set, he repeatedly returned to the themes of aging while still moving forward. They never thought the band would last more than a few years, yet here they are, in a packed room, with people singing along, 47 years later. At one point Jake talks about seeing The Clash for the first time, and I reflect that there are probably only a few people in the packed hall who ever even saw them - I saw one of their last US shows almost by chance in late 1982, when I had just turned 16. It makes me think of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez concept of how nobody really dies until the last person that remembers them from real life dies.

Before SLF took the stage, I was front and center with a bunch of other folks my age (i.e. old). About 10-15 seconds into their opening track “Suspect Device”, when the whole band kicks in, the pit went nuts and I got knocked off my feet (and on my ass) to my left, taking down another woman who was also around my age. Immediately, many hands reached for us to get us back up, and honestly this has always been a part of every punk show I’ve ever been to, maybe I’m spoiled by living in college towns all my life but the support has always been there, it manifests in many other ways as well.

Their whole set was great, I got to take it in from a few vantage points, even got back in the pit for “At The Edge” (the first song I ever heard/loved by them, thanks Spud). I kept seeing people I knew in the audience. By the time they finished the 1st encore song “Barbed Wire Love” even the toughest crusty guys were swooning like doo-wop soda counter pretty boys (which Jake commented on, to his credit).

And then we get to “Alternative Ulster”, their statement of purpose. Played by a guy who is clearly feeling his mortality, as am I, especially after the death of Steve Albini who was like 5 years older than me. I sing along at the top of my lungs, as does a much younger woman behind me, while a kid to my left who is maybe 10-11 years old watches the band intently, taking it all in. The memories continue through generations. I wonder if this kid will remember this SLF show 42 years from now the same way I remember The Clash in 1982. Punk is community at its heart, but yes also ritual and remembrance.

“And they say they're a part of you
And that's not true you know
They say they've got control of you
And that's a lie you know
They say you will never be free”

Killingsworth was the guitarist in Orchid, and runs Clean Plate...I feel like he also used to do a zine back in the late 90s, when he was at Hampshire College, but searching is a little hard. I used to order records from him all the time, and obv Orchid are like an all-time band

I'm at a hardcore/punk weekender in London, I guess this is the replacement for the Static Shock Weekend which finished last year. It's been really good so far. Tomorrow is an all-dayer with 11 bands playing and 7 more at an after party which I am v unlikely to make it to

Current RMFC lineup is drummer/singer/leader wit guitar, bass, electric 12-string (!!) and sax, it sounded incredible

"The politics of rock ’n’ roll, in England or America or anywhere else, is that a whole lot of kids want to be fried out of their skins by the most scalding propulsion they can find, for a night they can pretend is the rest of their lives, and whether the next day they go back to work in shops or boredom on the dole or American TV doldrums in Mom ’n’ Daddy’s living room nothing can cancel the reality of that night in the revivifying flames when for once if only then in your life you were blasted outside of yourself and the monotony which defines most life anywhere at any time, when you felt supra-alive, when you supped on lightning and nothing else in the realms of the living or dead mattered at all"

I'm going to put Lumpy on now. I have ordered the Swankys reissue and the latest Rudimentary Peni reissue. it's the one with Papas Adrianus looping all the way through it which does make it a slightly challenging listen but hey it wouldn't be Rudimentary Peni otherwise

also got the new Kriegshog album which is one of my albums of the year for sure

one of the things I love about La Vida Es Un Mus records is they will reissue the most extreme noisy hardcore and anarcho punk and then put out Dolly Mixture records (I saw Rachel Love from Dolly Mixture a couple of weeks ago, she played How Come You're Such A Hit With The Boys, Jane? which is one of my favourite songs of all time). this year they've reissued the Twelve Cubic Feet - Straight Out The Fridge 10" which I think is kind of anarcho-indiepop. possibly my favourite crossover episode, unless it's anarcho-goth, talking of which, Brigandage are playing in Brighton next year, who is even in Brigandage in 2025?

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 1 December 2024 06:38 (six months ago)

I also did get the Antisect LP reissue a few weeks ago. that makes me very happy. I got a load of reissues of stuff that's been on my wantlist for in some cases over 20 years. Siege - Drop Dead, Bl'ast - Power of Expression, NoMeansNo - Wrong, Gang Green - Skate to Hell/Sold Out 7"s, I should already own all that stuff but so hard to find for reasonable prices in this country
