It can be expanded further than 1 min, just tried it… but it seems like it starts to break apart after the 1min mark. Gave me a weird glitched outro on one example and a section that sounds very different from the previous ones.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 17 April 2024 16:28 (one year ago)

the extensions are clunky, like on my rap song I tried to add a spoken word intro for 33 seconds and when the text was short, instead of taking pauses, it would read everything way too fast and leave it with uncomfortable silence and a feeling like the song was never going to start, or awkward pauses in the middle of phrases.

one thing I do find hilarious about the app is when you do rap songs, it tries to work what you write into meter and if it feels like the lyrics you supplied are missing something, it fills in the gaps with gibberish.

like I wrote "God's cool, he made my balls", but the AI decided there should be another line after that to fit into the meter so it said something that SOUNDED like "take a look at these" but it was really just double-talk gibberish meant to sound like words.

it seems to pick up more on official genre tags than modifiers. if you type a genre it'll give you pre-filled styles and separate them by commas, but when you type something like "80s cartoon featuring horns" it'll maybe pick up on teh horn part only.

I’m sure they’ll win the battle against a technology they don’t quite understand this time.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 April 2024 14:40 (one year ago)

the tech is pretty simple aiui (although resource-intensive), it's a plagiarism machine that scrapes the internet for data

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 18 April 2024 14:49 (one year ago)

Sure that’s how ai works but given a large pool of data that spits out things that faintly resemble something but it’s something new how can you argue plagiarism?

AI is analyzing thousands of songs from every genre and learning what are the main aesthetics of each one. If AI takes 1000 country songs from different artists to learn about it and do something that doesn’t sound exactly like the source should those 1000 country artists get a paycut?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 April 2024 17:07 (one year ago)

according to the lawyers I know, the answer is "yes"

also I don't think it's "something new" by any remote stretch of the imagination, more like a very clever mashup

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 18 April 2024 17:08 (one year ago)

who gives a fuck about its legality

Never fight uphill 'o me, boys! (President Keyes), Thursday, 18 April 2024 17:26 (one year ago)

I think not this specifically, but something technically comparable could replace sampling similar to how Dr. Dre re-recorded samples (apparently to avoid paying more for them -- though don't you still have to pay for covering sample-length snippets?)

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 18 April 2024 17:59 (one year ago)

Thought the unspoken rule of the thread was that this is stupid and evil and probably illegal, but let's have a laugh with it anyway.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 April 2024 18:02 (one year ago)

Yeah at this point is more of a novelty tbh, the legal aspect of it should be studied for when it inevitably gets improved but I suppose the better it gets the harder it will be to actually trace what the source is.

I don’t think it will change real music considerably. It will likely be used as a tool for inspiration or as samples and will be a battle uphill.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 April 2024 18:20 (one year ago)

There are a lot of venues where the people paying kind of don't want "real" music, but rather Muzak (supermarkets, waiting rooms, soundtracks, etc...) and to the extent that this continues the shrinking of music-related side gigs, maybe Jimmy Fallon replacing The Roots with a laptop will mark the turning point, though I guess the question is who loses their job first, Questlove or Jimmy?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 18 April 2024 18:33 (one year ago)

who wrote about the relation between scarcity and pleasure? Like, once these things can churn out 100 insanely good albums by (favorite artist of your choice), will that just fuck everything up like explaining a joke?

Two key issues: this is meaningless without a definition of “AI” and, if you define “AI” as “supervised learning,” artists like and have been using supervised learning methods (likely unaware) for more than a decade. Lawyers are the least serious people about this issue.

My general view of this is that it's a fun gimmick, and scarily "realistic", but typing an idea of what you want to hear into a prompt box and it coming out the other end will never match the thrill of hearing exactly what you want to hear being done by a band and knowing other people exist in the world who are thinking in the same way as you

a3poify, Thursday, 2 May 2024 19:24 (one year ago)

completely. that's why I did the experiment of writing that garbage, because I knew it'd never be able to make coherent music with it and it's attempt to create it would be funny. but having it put together actual songs, the results got very disappointing over time. especially the 'heavy metal' voices used which are always terrible

just read a different article on this: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/09/fbi-busts-musicians-elaborate-ai-powered-10m-streaming-royalty-heist

I wonder if the random mostly non-musical tracks that would sometimes show up on my Discover Weekly years ago were from this guy or somebody else running a similar scheme, because I am assuming that with this many streams those tracks sometimes showed up on algorithmically generated playlists.

If the scam is ripping off Spotify and other streaming services, I gotta say I’m with this guy.

Yes, this seems like a victimless crime.

It's leeching on legit musicians:

'Spotify invests heavily in detecting, preventing, and removing the royalty impact of artificial streaming. Still, bad actors continue to attempt to steal money from the royalty pool that should be delivered to honest, hardworking artists.'

Well, now that this arch criminal has been apprehended I expect my Spotify, et al. payments to increase. I will report back.

People have been assimilating existing music styles to produce 'new' music since the year dot.

I listened to a fair bit (in pieces) that commentary. It's way too long. (It would be awesome if that was actually you mares slagging off your own creation, but hey)

Never once (or did it?) approach the actual music result. Was it any good? Oh, I take it there was no actual LP produced?

There's tons of AI generated jazz music, it tends to be used as bed music for YouTube clips, hold music, etc. it's not a new concept, it's Muzak.
