haven’t seen anyone mention unusual object by josh johnson, which is too bad

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 June 2024 20:51 (one year ago)

I think that's a very good album, but I'm already getting a little sick of sax players diving into post-Sam Gendel fx + beats, and I think the Gendel records are a bit more idiosyncratic. Not to say he owns it though, there was an EP by a saxophonist under the name Bossada this year that's excellent.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 June 2024 21:07 (one year ago)

This year is so much better than last year already. My shortlist of the best of the best:

Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown
Arushi Jain - Delight
Julia Holter - Something In the Room She Moves
Jlin - Akoma
Naemi - Dust Devil

Digging a lot of other records too, but these 5 have kinda stood above the rest. Haven't heard the new Arooj Aftab yet.

somesurprises - Perseids

alpine static, Tuesday, 25 June 2024 21:22 (one year ago)

The Jlin and Arushi Jain records are very good (though I think I liked Jain's last album better — this one is more pop song-y, and I'm kind of allergic to pop songs). The new NikNak album is also excellent.

Some faves of mine not mentioned above:

Awen Ensemble / Cadair Idris - Welsh folk/jazz, Fender Rhodes and flugel horns

Not to discourage lists (I started it) but I'd welcome any descriptors or RIYLs on some of the lesser known stuff. Or, if anyone wants to make a quick Spotify sampler of their favs so far this year, I'd be interested.

Gumshoes - Cacophony
Like Ben Folds meets Microdisney. A chamber pop album about a failed reunion tour of an old punk rock band. Some lad from Birmingham made the whole thing in his bedroom

Itasca - Imitations of War
RIYL of you like Joni Mitchell and lots of pretty psychy guitar on this too. Lovely album, maybe my most listened to of the year

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 15:00 (one year ago)

Is music less interesting than it’s ever been or am I just less interested than I’ve ever been? I usually only find like two or three new albums I’m really into each year now it feels like and I haven’t found a single 2024 album I’m into yet…I can’t even find one that interests me enough to check out at the moment which feels like a new level. What happened to psych/drone/free folk/weirdo music? Jazz seems to be either boringly academic or mining the spiritual jazz territory, the latter of which usually feels inauthentic to me these days. As I type this out I’m guessing this is more of a ‘me’ problem.

The Molly Miller and Julian Lage records I posted upthread definitely don't fall into either of these categories imo (guitar records with a sense of humor and folk elements). Lots of great electronic music too.

xxpost or Water Damage: https://waterdamage12xu.bandcamp.com/album/in-e

(more heavy psych/drone than free folk but definitely weirdo)

he/him hoo-hah (map), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 21:04 (one year ago)

Some of my favourite albums from this year that people might not have heard or heard of (based on no or minimal ILM mentions):

Adeem The Artist - Anniversary: The general sales-pitch for this is "queer country artist makes mainstream country album", and on a tune like "One Night Stand" it's hard to overlook that framing, but really it's just beautiful-sounding mainstream country that looks great in any frame.

Adult Jazz - So Sorry, So Slow: See my thread on them. I described them there as Owen Pallett meets Vulnicura and I'm standing by that.

Ariel Kalma, Jeremiah Chu & Marta Sofia Honer - The Closest Thing To Silence: not particularly close to silence at all actually; this is my favourite 2024 album in the whole in-vogue spiritual jazz / ambient / minimalist interzone, in part because it's not afraid to go full Vangelis.

Church Chords - elvis, he was Schlager: Started a thread on this the other day; voluptuously thick, driving and rhythmic jazz-bleeding-into-krautrock-bleeding-into-dance-music, like The Necks' Chemist but with more of a vocal/crossover/we-can-do-any-genre sensibility.

Delay Grounds - Digital Spiritual: if Wordcolour manages to put out an album this year it'll probably be the over-produced maximalist kitchen sink techno album we both need and deserve, but in the meantime this is a very good substitute.

Douglas Dare - Omni: dark, dramatic and lush synthetic art-pop with a surprisingly sturdy rhythmic undercurrent, kinda Patrick Wolf vibes?

Halo Maud - Celebrate: impeccably produced and consistently surprising ecumenical French pop-rock: Spotify says "displaying the influence of artists such as Bjork, Blond Redhead and Broadcast" which is... about right actually, though a more concise reference point might be Wye Oak's The Louder I Call The Faster It Runs.

Howie Lee - At the Drolma Wesel-Ling Monastery: what if Deep Forest, but the Forest is dark and full of terrors.

Ibaaku - Joola Jazz: world music as banging techno, banging techno as world music; also occupies the exact middle-ground between the albums immediately above and below.

Imperieux - Losers Queue: Wonky, percussive breakbeat-techno that imagines a Venn Diagram of DJ Koze, Pepe Bradock and the kind of oddball big beat that Bolshi Records were putting out in the late 90s.

Jasmine Myra - Rising: my other favourite spiritual hat jazz album of the year.

Lavurn - Lavurn: murky, whispery R&B collages which start off seeming a bit so-far-so-early-Weekend (though Velvet Negroni would be a closer point of comparison) but grow increasingly lush and layered and all-enveloping and ultimately intoxicating - real lost soundworld stuff. Apparently Lavurn is deeply obsessed with Tim & Bob productions? But more Bobby Valentino than Boys II Men.

L.B. Dub Corp - Saturn To Home: Started a thread on this one as well. Just really excellent and dense 1990-coded house and techno from Luke Slater.

Lost Souls of Saturn - Reality: portentous, verging on pompous jazz-techno doubling as a kind of War of the Worlds soundtrack. Like if the Moritz von Oswald Trio decided to record a tribute to Pink Floyd.

Mong Tong - 銘 Epigraphy: Dense percussion workouts from the outer edges of the galaxy. Pete Baran says "Orbital with the melodies removed", and I guess you could also say "Can with the songs removed" - but either description would imply this is somehow reduced music, when in fact it's always teeming with sound to the point of collapsing in on itself.

Nadine Shah - Filthy Underneath: Nadine doesn't really dramatically switch up her sonorous and somewhat spasmodic post-punk sound from album to album, but why would you?

Rachel Chinouriri - What A Devasating Turn of Events: Just really sweet, winsome, endearing indie-pop, I guess along the lines of Beabadoobee? If that sounds like your bag maybe start with "Never Need Me" and venture outwards from there.

ShineTTW - The Chosen One: I would say that this is my favourite naija album of 2024 so far, but that would imply an unwarranted level of authority on the subject. However it is tremendously good, managing to sound both hooky and stirring at every turn.

WILLOW - empathogen: Unexpectedly knotty math-pop vibes, but WILLOW knows how to keep it R&B (albeit R&B that sounds like it's been listening to Veda Hille), soulful and moving.

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Thursday, 27 June 2024 02:43 (one year ago)

In the discoveries from this thread so far, I really appreciated the Donato Dozzy which sits on a nice edge between repetition and subtle variation: a really comfortable home listening album in a techno envelope.
The second one is the Rosali. I don't listen to Adrienne Lenker / Big Thief, I don't feel the need, this seems close but more closely hits my spot - I assume because of the vocalist, and because it's so numbingly slow and soft and fuzzy.

Nabozo, Thursday, 27 June 2024 12:34 (one year ago)

One from me: Skee Mask - Resort. Blends techno and ambient -- I've seen references to Boards of Canada, but to my ears, his stuff always sounds uniquely him and is some of the most exciting electronic music I encounter.

It’s not a 5 star album (maybe not even a 4 star album) but really like the overall palette he’s using and how it all comes together. “Alesis” is one of my favorite songs of the year too.

well, kiran recorded it all in the house. we lived together in peckham for a year and mixed it there. i did his last one, too, 'trespass on foot', which has some most excellent songwriting!

A pop-leaning list of my current ten.

Blue Hawaii - Diamond Shovel. Obsessed with this, not a skip.
Becky Hill - Believe Me Now. Incredible voice, hooks for days.
Shy Girl - Club Shy EP. No skips.
Charli XCX - BRAT. Admittedly am tired of the narrative at this point but the production is still ace. 360 is an incredible opener.
Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood. Classic.
Burial - Dreamfear / Boy Sent From Above EP. F*cked up.
Innellea - The Belonging. Had a great set at Coachella.
Bronze Avery - Heatwave.
Neck Deep - Neck Deep. What the hell why not. Solid effort.
Cloud Nothings - Final Summer. I just like these guys.

Honorable mention for Peggy Gou - I Hear You. A few tracks I could do without but I've got the standouts on repeat.

i want to write something about heresiarch's edifice on this thread. i think one other person mentioned it. it's on the extreme end of metal. i spent basically the first six months of this year listening to metal after getting "layed off" from my dj gig. that heresiarch album just totally took me over. there is some very brutal and suffocating chaos on it, little blitzes of guitar noise that would give anything you could think of in the "annihilating" category a run for its money. there are major elements of it that are in the tradition of goregrind and "war metal" i guess (i'm not great with metal subgenres). but then those are balanced out by these burned out, blackened, elegaic, even elegant, and really very sophisticated slower interludes with a lot of beautiful and wild feedback work, and a twisted and haunting sense of melody. the more i listened to the album the more i noticed a clarity and articulation to everything, it sounds incredible. the drumming can be very martial at times but there is a lot of space, subtlety and sophistication to it. i suspect this might be a thing with "war metal" as a genre, but the power chords that drive the songs seem to be based around 4ths rather than 5ths, and they careen through these chromatic and even tonally jazz-like progressions that have a wonderful color and balance to them. there's a sculptural and tactile satisfaction to every track and how each unfolds. i don't mean to yuck anyone's yum with a comparison, but i tried a few times with that new ulcerate album and all i can hear is noodling around in the same modes for minutes at a time, i find that very boring, while edifice presents a new weird or gut-punching or horrendous or darkly triumphant corner of its world every few seconds. just wanted to give edifice some props because i've seen it mainly referred to as extreme and violent and all that, but i don't see anyone pointing out the elegant and sophisticated backbone of it that makes it so special and re-listenable.

I'm the other person who has rated/typed in this AOTY thread about Heresiarch being a massive metal standout to me this year, and yeah, the new Ulcerate album likewise bored or at very least disapppointed me; would recommend the Ad Nauseam album from 2021 for another extreme metal record with, to my ears, a lot of, as map wrote xp, elegance and sophistication: https://adnauseam-official.bandcamp.com/album/imperative-imperceptible-impulse-full-dynamic-range-dr11

River Through Howling Ska (Craig D.), Saturday, 13 July 2024 17:47 (one year ago)

(the Ad Nauseam album being a bit more spare/spindly/spidery sounding, though [U.S. Maple gone DM?], with more room to breathe and less of the presumably-Portal-influenced suffocating wall that's on the Heresiarch)

River Through Howling Ska (Craig D.), Saturday, 13 July 2024 17:53 (one year ago)

I can hear Curve in there too. I enjoyed it, but didn't quite love it as much as everyone else seems to. I found myself thinking about Hatchie and School Of Seven Bells who have stronger hooks.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 July 2024 22:25 (one year ago)

Yeah that Fine album is really good. I haven't listened to Astrid Sonne, I guess I should.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Friday, 19 July 2024 03:19 (one year ago)

speaking of Jon Hassell vibes, the Total Blue album that just dropped today on Music from Memory is exquisite. one for the fretless bass fans

donna rouge, Friday, 19 July 2024 16:26 (one year ago)

Ooh, thx for the Total Blue heads-up, have been a casual admirer of Benedek's production style for a while now, didn't know he had a Gaussian Curve-esque collab in the works

River Through Howling Ska (Craig D.), Friday, 19 July 2024 16:35 (one year ago)

Yeah Benedek owns

brimstead, Friday, 19 July 2024 16:35 (one year ago)

(On first flip-through, I esp like the sequenced bassline and 4/4 kick additions on that final digi-only track, "Stone God Stomp", but can def see why it's kept off the vinyl as a clear outlier)

River Through Howling Ska (Craig D.), Friday, 19 July 2024 16:37 (one year ago)

lots of great recommendations itt

I second:
Jasmine Myra - Rising
Itasca - Imitation of War
Lake Mary & pinyonpine - It's Okay, You Can Open Your Eyes Now
Four Tet - Three
Charles Lloyd - The Sky Wil Still Be There Tomorrow

I've also been enjoying:
John Leventhal - Rumble Strip
Ezra Feinberg - Soft Power
Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well

is there a tracks equivalent thread? I've been enjoying a lot of non-album cuts too

And don't think it's been mentioned in this thread but the Middle Kids album is really good and tracks like Dramamine and Highlands are probably career highs

this album is indeed outstanding

brimstead, Friday, 6 September 2024 04:49 (one year ago)

still really new, but it's safe to say the okay kaya album exceeded my expectations fairly easily. "the groke" is maybe my soty, but the rest of the album sounds nothing like it lol. her voice is starting to sound really similar to julia holter's, so it comes across as a radio-friendlier bizarro world synthpop version of have you in my wilderness or something. one of my favorite things about okay kaya is how idk if she's ever being genuine or not, so when she titles the album oh my god - that's so me i love that it feels like she doesn't all the way know either and is also not all the way in on the joke. 4 mics. recommended.

The new lp from Simon Fisher Turner, Instability of the Signal, is so far AOTY for me. Check it if you like drone plus melody ambient pop, cf. David Sylvian's Manofon/Died in the Wool or Astrid/Chauveau's Butterfly in the Snowfall. Beautiful stuff.

sawdust lagoon, Friday, 4 October 2024 23:59 (one year ago)

can't remember which thread i posted it in but Chris Forsyth's new group put out an ace album this year:

Basic - This Is Basic

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 5 October 2024 03:03 (one year ago)

Everything Shackleton did in the past 12 months is instant top 10 for me — his own Scandal of Time, Jinxed by Being with Six Organs of Admittance, and the Holy Tongue one 100%

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Saturday, 5 October 2024 03:09 (one year ago)

That Basic album is really cool although it took a few listens for me to get accustomed to it - the drum machine almost seems at odds with the rest of the instrumentation on some tracks. The last track on it is pretty amazing though

donna rouge, Saturday, 5 October 2024 04:00 (one year ago)

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 5 October 2024 04:26 (one year ago)

some of mine so far that i don't see itt

[ahmed] - Wood Blues (driving free jazz pointillism)
animal piss, it's everywhere - grace (totally fried lopsided southern rock)
AWFUL - 4 songs (great lofi punk rock)
dun-dun band - pita parka (excellent transcendent unclassifiable instrumental music)
gray/smith - heels in the aisle (earthy simple guitar/drum duos, sort of cosmic)
françois houle - meditations (solo improvisations for basset clarinet)
megabasse - discorde (minimalist chiming loops)
shane parish - repertoire (fahey-esque solo guitar renditions of avant jazz classics and other songs)
wet tuna - sweet pond nugs (sprawling psychedlic jams with heart n soul)

budo jeru, Monday, 7 October 2024 21:29 (one year ago)

can we get a prediction on which non-metal publication will put the Blood Incantation album highest on its year-end list? and what # they'll give it?

Pitchfork at #9?

Stereogum at #4?

can it be #1 at Time Magazine?

what is the potential here, is what i'm wondering.

alpine static, Monday, 7 October 2024 21:41 (one year ago)

Stereogum #2 is my prediction. Pitchfork will place it in the low 30s.

shane parish - repertoire (fahey-esque solo guitar renditions of avant jazz classics and other songs)

― budo jeru

This has been a favourite of mine, too (thought was drawn to it by the Kraftwerk/Aphex Twin/Minutemen renditions). He also turns up on Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet's Four Guitars Live that Craig D posted about earlier in the thread.

Sarah Davachi's The Head As Form'd In The Crier's Choir has been growing on me; NZ-wise there's been Louisa Nicklin's The Big Sulk and Yon Loader's self-titled.

etc, Tuesday, 8 October 2024 19:32 (one year ago)

Jessica Pratt's - Here in the Pitch (love the feel and sound of this record. like something you would hear on the car radio in the mid/late '60s)

KorovaMilkbar, Tuesday, 8 October 2024 20:10 (one year ago)

There's a new Haptic release (digital only) set to drop in November. Let's hope that it's a full-length affair.

Spectral Evolution by Rafael Toral (Moikai) sounds brilliant on a proper stereo setup. Great mix and mastering.

Distinct and Concealed by Derek Baron & Like Martin (Notice Recordings) is lovely.

William Fields 'Live in Newark' - primo electro. WF's output (FICTIONS in particular) during the last few years has been top notch.

Diamond Jubilee - I hope that it's released on compact disc. An exceptional effort (possible AOTY)

Hardcore-tet - a pleasant surprise

I'm not sure I'm ready to make the case for any of them to be THE AOTY for me, but it's kind of wild to see that October 4th saw the release of no fewer than 5 records that are in serious contention for the top half of my list. Can't remember a single week with this many records that proved to live up to the hype or completely surprise me:

Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
The Hard Quartet - The Hard Quartet
Memorials - Memorial Waterslides
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead
The Smile - Cutouts

Yup, guilty as charged w/r/t 75 Dollar Bill comparison--also heavily infl by Natural Information Society and Jeff Parker ETA IVtet, fwiw (as well as regional/Toronto-based bands with whom Dun-Dun shares membership, such as GUH and Eucalyptus)

Anyhoo, thx for the kind words (Pita Parka, Pt. II: Nim Egduf, another additional 40 mins/four more tunes from the exact same recording session, will hopefully be out in the first quarter of 2025!), and back to AOTY discussion, since I think my prospective year-end list is now of course much clearer than when I last drafted one in this thread many months ago:

1) VAMPIRE WEEKEND - Only God Was Above Us
2) MJ LENDERMAN - Manning Fireworks
3) SHABASON/GUNNING - Ample Habitat
4) GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR - "NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD"
5) CS + KREME - The Butterfly Drinks The Tears Of The Tortoise
6) THE FOUR SAM WILKES ALBUMS HE HAS RELEASED (SO FAR) ON LEAVING RECORDS THIS YEAR (tie)
7) GB - Gusse Music
8) HERESIARCH - Edifice
9) ROB CLUTTON TRIO - Asterballoo 23
10) (AHMED) - Giant Beauty
11) RAFAEL TORAL - Spectral Evolution
12) HAPPY APPLE - "New York CD"
13) NILUFER YANYA - My Method Actor
14) FINE - Rocky Top Ballads
15) PNEUMA HAGION - From Beyond
16) GAMBA - Grifedom III
17) ANCIENT EGYPT - Climb Every Mountain
18) ANDRE ETHIER - Cold Spaghetti
19) AMEN DUNES - Death Jokes
20) SILVAPLANA - Lambs of Dionysus

Honourable mentions/late additions: The Bad Plus, the forthcoming Jeff Parker ETA IVtet album (since I'm at very least going to like it), Nick Krgovich's amazing Magnetic Fields cover album which he pulled off Bandcamp for some reason

i repped for this on the bandcamp thread but i want to make sure people listen to it before EOY stuff: box of dark roses, the new/posthumous double album by mope grooves is quietly blowing my mind. i don't even know if i've listened to the whole thing, it's 1.5 hours long, i usually have it on shuffle, and the whole album has a similar sound. almost every track is some combination of a fractured drum loop, tinny keyboards and samples, maybe a strummed acoustic guitar, and repeated sung lines in simple harmony. kinda makes me think of raincoats, pram, solex, sometimes microphones/julie doiron. there's a definite concept to the album about the trans journey and left-wing politics that i don't feel qualified to get into (i guess there are extensive liner notes that get into this). it all bleeds together into a smear of delicate, homemade-sounding pop mantras. idk i sound like a bad music critic but it's a cool album and i hope people check it out.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 7 November 2024 16:57 (one year ago)

any thoughts on Machine Girl (MG Ultra, and in general) ? haven't found any discussion about them here (yet) after listening to MG ULTRA. listened to the album 1-2 times, it seemed sticky (ear candy-ish) despite being so aggro, over the top. haven't revisited it yet (to determine if it sucks) but it seemed like a worthwhile listen at the time. i couldn't find a reasonably priced CD copy (it's like $30 on their bandcamp page, a bit cheaper on their website) ... the vocals vaguely recall zach hill's concentration face (dvd) material, and maybe the first track on opn's returnal (acid-fueled terror, yelling out into a massive void, etc.)

Lowell N. Behold'n, Sunday, 10 November 2024 04:32 (one year ago)

ixnay on the achine girl-may, eh? ain't seen anyone talking about them on here. maybe there's some discussion about MG o'er at the Steve Hoffman estates...
(not)

Lowell N. Behold'n, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 03:15 (one year ago)

I took my son to see Machine Girl play in the parking lot of a tiny bar by the highway in San Antonio several years back. It was a wild show.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 12 November 2024 03:20 (one year ago)

haven’t heard the new one but i remember liking one of their earlier albums - reminded me of digital hardcore/atari teenage riot a bit

donna rouge, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 06:47 (one year ago)

Loved U-Void Synthesizer but haven't gotten into the new one yet.

beard papa, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 16:26 (one year ago)

Merope - Vejula

I'm not sure how I stumbled on this but this is one of the more unique and beautiful albums I've heard this year. Lithuanian folk music but with some layered electronic textures. Super immersive and detailed.

octobeard, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 23:24 (one year ago)

loving that, thx

sleeve, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 23:26 (one year ago)

yeah this rules

donna rouge, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 01:48 (one year ago)

along similar lines, Arianne Churchman & Benedict Drew - May takes English folk melodies and blurs and smears them with layers of loops and sound effects turning them into hypnotic trance jams, gorgeous stuff

donna rouge, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 02:12 (one year ago)

dunno if this is 'AOTY' material, but it's a nice release. unusual to hear piano / guitar duos (with these two), as opposed to just guitars. loren connors plays piano (and drums briefly, on one track) on a few tracks as well. not sure if it's been mentioned; loren connors & david grubbs 'evening air'

Lowell N. Behold'n, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 04:08 (one year ago)

Pleasantly surprised to see some Machine Girl chatter in here! They're definitely part of my music taste (probably the majority) that I just assume doesn't fly on here so I don't bother. Anyway the new album isn't close to their best imo, U-Void Synthesiser was much better, but it still has some super moments

imago, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 08:35 (one year ago)

adore most stuff I hear from room40

Reymour - NoLand
https://reymour.bandcamp.com/album/noland

i find this album addictive. strange and dreamy swiss/belgian synth-pop, tons of hooks

Anton Friisgaard - Teratai Åkande
https://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/teratai-kande

danish producer working with gamelan musicians. exceptionally beautiful

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:12 (one year ago)

huh, stroomtv, same label as the Merope album posted earlier!

sleeve, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:19 (one year ago)

yes, stroom is a great label that deserves its own thread tbh

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:28 (one year ago)

I really enjoyed the Temir Alcy album they put out this year too. They’re quite prolific!

donna rouge, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:34 (one year ago)

big co-sign on that reymour album, a must for any broadcast fan

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:42 (one year ago)

Before the lists start pouring in, what are we expecting to be the critical consensus picks this year? I've been a little out of the new release game in the last few months but based on what I've seen maybe Brat, Cindy Lee (US Indie), The Cure (UK), Vampire Weekend, Waxahatchee?

Indexed, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 15:57 (one year ago)

Nick Cave

I need to check that out. Vanishing Twin is one of my favorite bands, but i haven't really explored the rest of Valentina Magaletti's projects.

Talk about the Merope album led me down a rabbit hole exploring the Stroom.tv catalog, and now I'm convinced that Alepher - Dodges Aim is another favorite of the year. It's full of weird minimalist sketches and confounding percussive workouts.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Saturday, 30 November 2024 17:29 (one year ago)

Sounds promising

Skrot Montague, Wednesday, 11 December 2024 17:55 (one year ago)

Yatta - Palm Wine: unclassifiable avant pop/experimental; post-mallpunk cyber-emo rnb realness with kaleidoscopic sonics

Hesaitix - Noctian Airgap: ketamine wobble mixed with chrome and glass production, riding the line between dread and arousal, negative space remaining after ego loss

Autre ne Veut - Love Guess who: (a bit biased bc i was involved w/ production but ...) imo a strong return to form with multiple earworm bangers and a more expansive soft rock palette. i actually wasn't expecting to get hooked since i'd already heard it a million times but it's really just a lot of good to great songs

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 11 December 2024 18:17 (one year ago)

new punk stuff this year:
Media Puzzle - Strategic Living (if you just check out one, this is the one)
The Gobs - S/T (2nd fave)
GEE TEE - Prehistoric Chrome
Busted Head Racket - Go! Go! Go!
Dru the Drifter - The Moon Walker

discussed a bit in LPD thread:
Legendary Pink Dots - Chemical Playschool Volumes 23 & 24

Znous - 4

oh and Baldruin's new Mosaike der Imagination

sleeve, Wednesday, 11 December 2024 19:40 (one year ago)

Couple of things i haven't seen mentioned but enjoyed this year:

Winged Wheel - Big Hotel
Supergroup overstating it perhaps, but folks from Tyvek, Water Damage, plus J Rolin, Steve Shelley. Tranced kraut style jam sessions edited post factum in the Faust style. Two drummers!

Daisy Rickman - Howl
Immersive, sometimes Cornish(!) language acid folk, with Eastern touches and drones. Bridget St John? Nico? Check track Bleujen an Howl.
