10! WE HAVE A LEAGUE PEOPLE!

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 11 October 2024 19:06 (six months ago)

like a maniac I have my choices set up for the next rounds too

brimstead, Friday, 11 October 2024 21:36 (six months ago)

It took me a while to work out how to submit my votes. It looks like you're given an allocation of 10 plus points and 2 minus points, which you can distribute amongst the songs however you want, i.e. you can give a song more than 1 plus/minus points, or you can leave a song on 0 points.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 12 October 2024 09:47 (six months ago)

Yah I can change that I’d people want that’s just how my other leagues are

kurt schwitterz, Saturday, 12 October 2024 15:39 (six months ago)

It's good this way!

mike t-diva, Saturday, 12 October 2024 15:56 (six months ago)

The fact that you can give out negative points is gonna tank my chances at ever winning this thing

frogbs, Saturday, 12 October 2024 16:17 (six months ago)

Jumped aboard too late for Round 1, but I'll be able to play in Round 2.

The chat and comments make for the best part of the leagues. Plus non-algorithmic music discoveries.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Saturday, 12 October 2024 18:16 (six months ago)

Oof should have disabled downvotes. I feel bad downvoting other people’s noms and there’s nothing I think even warrants them in this round.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 12 October 2024 18:18 (six months ago)

Someone less lazy than me should transcribe the tracklists from the playlists in here for future reference.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 12 October 2024 19:41 (six months ago)

So we have to give two downvotes and also can't give more than three upvotes to any one song? Is that right?

Lily Dale, Saturday, 12 October 2024 20:51 (six months ago)

No more than 3*

I like downvotes because I’m a hater

kurt schwitterz, Saturday, 12 October 2024 22:17 (six months ago)

If only the White Mountain Cooler jingle from 1986 was on Spotify. Damn thing has a "You Give Love A Bad Name"-style chorus intro, a verse, a pre-chorus, and another chorus, all in 30 seconds!? I guess that means that their next commercial was their "New Jersey"

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 15 October 2024 21:39 (six months ago)

Very interested in the tracklist for round 2! Love grooving.

I’m gonna suck so bad at round 3 I don’t know any britpop music. I don’t even know what can be considered as Britpop besides the obvious things. Are the Stone Roses britpop? Is early The Verve allowed?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 October 2024 01:04 (six months ago)

I'm not even sure I know what a groove is so I might sit the next one out for fear of making an embarrassing mistake.

Thanks to the first round for "Final Day" which I did not know and which has been haunting my brain for the last few days.

This round made me realize that the short songs I respond to most are the ones where the song itself is in some way about not quite having enough time. Also, I think, why I have always responded more strongly to the Stones cover of "Good Times" than to the Sam Cooke original: the Stones version is shorter, under two minutes, and I think that's one reason it's always given me a more intense feeling of a fleeting golden moment that will not be repeated.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 03:32 (six months ago)

so no one else is waking up every morning with "Bart and Marge, they are in charge" stuck in their head?

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 03:34 (six months ago)

Oh you seriously need to get on the Colossal Youth album. It sits on its own plane of existence.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 October 2024 04:11 (six months ago)

Just joined! I miss my old league (which fell apart when two of the members broke up w/each other). ILX oughtta put me in my place.

I’m a fan of downvotes & collegial hater energy — catty takedowns of other folks’ picks were always fun to read. Or to write.

I think Britpop's a good call for Round 3, as it's such a reviled genre here, which makes digging out some worthwhile tunes an interesting challenge.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 17 October 2024 11:43 (six months ago)

The question is, are we limiting ourselves to the initial 'Britpop' years

imago, Thursday, 17 October 2024 12:32 (six months ago)

I mean, I'm happy to. Got some ideas yknow

we're in the voting stage for Get Funky so new people will have to wait until the Britpop submissions open up next week

there's lots of good stuff in this playlist that is unfortunately going to get no votes from me, there's just too many amazing songs to be able to spread votes around fairly

God damn, y'all Music Leaguers did not disappoint! Almost half the list are songs I'd not heard before, which is why I joined such a league - show me great tracks I somehow missed in my 49 years!

Front-loaded albums are musical gerrymandering (Prefecture), Saturday, 19 October 2024 01:49 (six months ago)

Can the league admin open it up to more players? Or is that not possible once a league is underway?

nate woolls, Saturday, 19 October 2024 02:33 (six months ago)

No spoilers but has anyone else who's voted looked at the results so far?

Oof

groovypanda, Saturday, 19 October 2024 16:42 (six months ago)

posting some sort of boredoms/oranssi pazuzu psych-noise kosmische meltdown to the 'get funky' thread may sound like a completely hopeless enterprise, but someone's got to do it

groovypanda your support (based on the unbroken run of minusings briefly reversing when you voted) has been noted ofc. a real one

imago, Saturday, 19 October 2024 16:52 (six months ago)

We are at 25 players right now which makes a really long playlist! I’m going to have one more round to see how that pans out before opening up to more players

kurt schwitterz, Saturday, 19 October 2024 17:49 (six months ago)

Maybe we can start a second league for new players and those that want a second league to join?

Then again, considered deliberations are better than hot takes!

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 October 2024 10:36 (six months ago)

If people are kicked out based on scores then I'm going to have to amend my selection strategy

imago, Monday, 21 October 2024 10:38 (six months ago)

That said, next round should in theory play into my hands. The trick is to choose something where it's not obvious who posted it, lol

i feel like i was a little too mean to the sharon jones song. the daptone aesthetic is mildly annoying to me but it's a good song and performance

"misdemeanor" was my favorite find from this round, it has like six different hooks crammed into one little song. but i really enjoyed the whole thing.

Hi mike!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 October 2024 13:57 (six months ago)

I got lucky in the first round. I don’t think I’ll do too good with britpop and I’ll definitely do bad in the round four but I’ll blame my parents for that one.

Btw BRITPOP votes are open! I don’t think I’d consider many of these as strict britpop but it’s a great playlist once again so no complaints.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 October 2024 14:01 (six months ago)

DJP, Thursday, 24 October 2024 20:49 (six months ago)

One of these songs was on my own shortlist, so yay for that. Another is from an act who I thought were universally scorned here, so yay again that I'm not the only one who rates them.

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Friday, 25 October 2024 19:19 (six months ago)

If people are listening to the Saint Etienne song on youtube then I think we need full disclosure on whether they're voting based on the album version or the Alan Tarney produced single version, might demand a re-run depending on how badly my song does

I finished near the bottom again, but I'm glad I was able to introduce This Summer to some Squeeze fans who hadn't heard it before. Can I respond to comments here?

Good song, almost classic D&T, even if there’s a little too much “aren’t we having FUN!” vibes.

I always thought the song sounds kind of melancholy, this mixture of anthemic vigour and melancholy that is distinctively britpop, I think the “aren’t we having FUN!” vibe is supposed to be strained and brittle, the singer is aware that the happiness he describes is unstable and possibly transient, and has to be insisted upon as a result. It's a giddy sense of fun that already carries a foretaste of the ensuing comedown.

Yeah, play that Lush track next to Elastica's Waking Up and you'll spot a connection.

mike t-diva, Monday, 28 October 2024 19:36 (six months ago)

how dare they rip off elastica, a band that famously never ripped off music from other bands

na (NA), Monday, 28 October 2024 19:43 (six months ago)

I am playing “Waking Up” now and there’s a tenuous melodic connection? The Lush song has a lot more energy and a better chord progression.

DJP, Monday, 28 October 2024 19:49 (six months ago)

You made it sound like Lush did a Porto-Blurred Lines on Elastica when it’s more like a couple of guitar bands with female vocals used the same melodic line cliche

the only other song I've heard is the one I posted in the Music League, "Taxi", and at the time my dad sang it in person, I thought "how many fucking verses does this song have" - but now the context in which I revisited that video of dad singing it will always give the song a warm place in my heart even though it probably would never have otherwise.

Kurt Dandruff (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:56 (six months ago)

This round seems the toughest for downvoting yet as whatever track you choose will more than likely have some emotional resonance for the nominator.

So apologies in advance

I fucked my chances of being able to choose round themes, but my experience of music league is that it’s best if you remain true to yourself, both in song selection and in voting & commenting. I stand by my choices.

kurt schwitterz, Sunday, 3 November 2024 16:50 (six months ago)

I'm not sure we have 'road trips' in this country. The longest you could possibly drive for is about 14 hours. London to Edinburgh is six or seven. Does that count as a road trip? Anyway, the most fun I ever had listening to music in the car with friends on a long distance journey was trying to be the first to guess all the artists in intro introspection by osymyso. I was driving and luckily the roads were fairly quiet as it took a fair bit of my attention. Not really something to boast about!

Oh well! I stand by the pick as my dad did love it, and his appreciation of the theme I think informed his attentive parenting. (And I still think it's funny as a pick related to parenting but ymmv) I figure with this stuff to always go with your first instinct and not play to the crowd, although I had no idea the crowd hates him lol

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 4 November 2024 15:27 (six months ago)

I said my piece on Cats in the Cradle on the league chat but I genuinely enjoy that song and also knew it was going to be targeted by the league for downvotes. I figured the same would happen for my pick but it’s not every day you get to post a world-famous recording done by someone you later shared a stage with.

DJP, Monday, 4 November 2024 15:41 (six months ago)

I like “taxi” more, that one was new to me

mike t-diva, Monday, 4 November 2024 17:41 (six months ago)

Cat's in the Cradle has over time been seen as 70s schmaltz, and then it hit the airwaves again in the 90s when Ugly Kid Joe covered it, so Americans might just be sick of it.

(I like it but even I'm sick of hearing it by now)

Kurt Dandruff (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 November 2024 17:43 (six months ago)

Yeah, my high school history teacher tried to get us into Harry Chapin, so it's just forever uncool in a way that say, Fairport Convention (who I didn't grow up with), never will be.

enochroot, Monday, 4 November 2024 17:48 (six months ago)

I don't remember ever hearing it before, but I took against it instantly. Something cloying about it and I like a lot of 70s schmaltz

Alba, Monday, 4 November 2024 18:07 (six months ago)

My dad was a fiend for 70s acoustic singer-songwriters so I got to hear it all, including Don MacLean deep cuts

Kurt Dandruff (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 November 2024 18:09 (six months ago)

i have an affinity for certain kinds of schmaltz but the tone of the lyrics (especially the DO YOU SEE!?! turn at the end) and chapin's voice really turn me off CITC. the little instrumental refrain is nice. and it was smart to write the lyrics from the perspective of the shitty dad instead of the son.

i'm thinking i might opt out of the next league, it's been really fun but i find the time crunch of it a little stressful

na (NA), Monday, 4 November 2024 18:16 (six months ago)

There is something extremely special about watching an a capella group struggle their way to sing the CITC harmonies through stifled giggles while the soloist stares blankly into space, unable to remember a so glad lyric to the last verse

imago, Monday, 4 November 2024 18:50 (six months ago)

I expected the punishment I received. If I’d been playing to compete I would have chosen “Kodachrome” for my mom, but the writeup wouldn’t have been as keen.

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Monday, 4 November 2024 19:08 (six months ago)

Loved both the write up and the song itself for Gimme Dat Ding (i played it for my kids yesterday), and was a little surprised it did so poorly.
But I guess you've gotta downvote something, and schmaltz and novelty are easier to rationalize?

enochroot, Monday, 4 November 2024 20:07 (six months ago)

I love goofy old stuff like that, would never had heard it outside this league I imagine!

brimstead, Monday, 4 November 2024 20:31 (six months ago)

QUESTIONS - how do you guys want to do the next league? Was this too many people? Would more be too many? Was the amount of downvotes/upvotes ok?

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 4 November 2024 20:40 (six months ago)

More would be too many. 25 is already a lot. But it’s manageable for me. My previous league was smaller and tight-knit, so there was a lotta pressure to provide a decent writeup for every vote (and tbh that’s the best part of this game for me. I especially love the catty ones).

16 up is tight for 25 songs but I do like that it makes you make choices.

3 down is lots

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Monday, 4 November 2024 21:00 (six months ago)

25 is a good number, it's enough to have a good amount of diversity but not so much that I can't listen to the playlist a couple of times before voting. For upvotes/downvotes I don't really care too much, I think I can adjust to whatever most people think is good.

silverfish, Monday, 4 November 2024 21:43 (six months ago)

The downvotes aren't fun to hand out, but it seems like an essential part of the gameplay dynamic.

In fact, it'd be fun to see categories with rules on when you have to use downvotes (automatic downvote if you've ever heard the song before, automatic downvote if someone else picked a song in the same language, etc).

25 players is a lot. If there are enough people waiting to get in, maybe we should split the league in half?

enochroot, Monday, 4 November 2024 22:57 (six months ago)

The current formula works just right for me. It makes for tough choices, but in a good way. 25 players is also plenty.

mike t-diva, Monday, 4 November 2024 23:33 (six months ago)

Also, I think it’s OK to mix familiar songs with new discoveries, and given the geographic divide it’s different to know what is and isn’t familiar to others. Case in point: Blur’s Girls & Boys in the Britpop round. My first thought: urgh, not this obvious old cliche (in the UK, it’s uber canonical). My second thought, on working through the playlist: fair enough, it still has merit. Whereas the geographic opposite may well have been true for my Bobbie Gentry pick in the last round.

mike t-diva, Monday, 4 November 2024 23:40 (six months ago)

― imago,

This is a sad song for a sad story. Shame you didn’t make it in time to participate. While it doesn’t quite work as highway music for me - I usually like my highway music to be either soft and textured or repetitive, so I don’t get too distracted, and this is neither - I would have voted for it if only because it challenges what road trip music is.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 13:46 (six months ago)

Aw :)

I'm dutifully listening to the playlist...might post some takes...albeit unable to see the write-ups. Feel like this round is a bit less story-dependent (he says, having made his own quasi-submission entirely dependent on the story)

imago, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 13:48 (six months ago)

weirdly this is my favorite round of songs yet, and yet most of these would NOT work for me on a road trip (a lot of them are so relaxing to me they'd contribute to me feeling sleepy). still voting on the quality of song only, but it is kinda fascinating because people's needs on a road trip are so different, so that is why this round is fun.

This playlist has 3 tracks that were, at various times of my life, my favorite song (one of them being from the Muppets, which I have not heard in at least 3 decades).

It messes with my mind that the playlist concludes with a song from Nebraska, followed by a song whose album cover is a solid imitation of Nebraska

Also Tidal’s search function is terrible, when looking up the Dave Dudley song it suggested a re-recorded version on an Outlaw Country comp with a stars-and-bars cover.

Virtual points allocated as follows:

tunnels - 1 - "motorik mainpop? allow it"

It's All Over Now (Baby Blue) - 2 - "has the woozy dazed quality of many a childhood drive, snuck up on me"

Where You Go I Go Too - 3 - "a really obvious choice but I love it too much to not give it full marks"

At Sea - 2 - "guessing this is our winner. gets points as much for not being the previous two songs on the playlist as for being a banger"

Pantha Rei - 3 - "another woozy trip, this time at night. absolutely excellent. love it when bobbins cru present me with the pick of the crop without me having to check everything out"

Don't You Know - 2 - "delightful. have another talk with God"

This Tornado Loves You - 1 - "quite lovely"

Detox - 2 - "yeah this goes hard. angry drive! raaah!"

A Yellow Robe - 2 - "I had worried this wasn't really going anywhere for a while but then some really cool noises happened and we all had fun"

There was loads I really didn't like this time. If it wasn't mentioned above, I probably mean yours! Sorry! Maybe your write-up recontextualises it well!

Another great ground. Congratulations to _space and to Moka, league-winner.

One thing I like about this game is that it makes you realise not everyone knows everything. ILM and most other parts of internet music discussion leave you with the impression that you're usually playing catch-up with everyone else, cause there's a cognitive bias that makes you pay attention when people are speaking up, and not notice when they start quiet. So, I was a bit worried that This Tornado Loves You was too obvious a pick, but then I find that Dan and ledge barely know Neko Case and were pleased to be introduced to the song. That's very nice

lol Carnage Visors did about as well as I expected it to

DJP, Friday, 8 November 2024 11:22 (five months ago)

thing is, I associate my youthful car journeys with no band more than The Cure, they were fundamental to my experience as a child music listener...but it wasn't Carnage Visors we listened to lol yeah

imago, Friday, 8 November 2024 11:38 (five months ago)

I belatedly thought of posting the entire Lovesext album but Spotify broke all the tracks out from each other rather than keeping it as one long track with multiple songs in it the way the CD was

DJP, Friday, 8 November 2024 12:03 (five months ago)

i mean i'd have probably thrown it a bunch of points if you'd managed to do that

imago, Friday, 8 November 2024 12:33 (five months ago)

Oh, that other Smokie track is loads better than the one you actually posted.

I'm pretty shocked that the Muppets outperformed the Cure, but it's been a surprising week.

enochroot, Friday, 8 November 2024 12:54 (five months ago)

The Cure treated their fanbase's concerns with contempt – of course they ran into the arms of the Muppets

Alba, Friday, 8 November 2024 13:07 (five months ago)

I would’ve give Carnage Visors at least 2 points probably… sorry, wasn’t able to vote this round

I really dug Carnage (pron. “Carnegie” IIRC) Visors, DJP! It could have been an hour long and I would have liked it even better.

The most fascinating part of the league is learning how little i really know about the U.K.'s music scene in a mass-culture way.

I know that I should not be surprised that the raw amount of stuff that found its way over here, either in the mainstream or indie/undie world, is wildly exceeded by what y'all encounter on the day-to-day that basically nobody in the U.S has heard or ever will hear. But it still feels like i'm being exposed to a parallel universe when reading multiple players all make the same "who the fuck is Alice?" comment, and I'm "what are you talking about?" Like record store dreams, where you are flipping through bins of nonexistent albums that your subconscious has created at that moment.

It reminds me of when Kermode and Mayo made some joke about a '70s (?) song I'd (and I'm guessing 99.9% of Americans) never heard before called "Dancing with the Captain" that sounded like a remarkable deepfake of the cheesy side of California yacht-rock, but it must be a real song, right?

Anyway, keep it up, as this league has been an amazing cultural lesson.

Hey!! Thanks everyone! Wasn't playing to win and I think I honestly just got lucky by winning the first round. I thought the rest of my picks wouldn't be that well received but was pleasantly surprised they did ok and loved reading your comments on every result. Found some great new music along the way too.

I think I'm not very good at picking good ideas for a playlist but let's do this. I have 2 ideas which aren't mindblowing but could produce some good playlists and I'm thinking doing a genre specific one too (as round 3: britpop was this first time).

Might steal one of these suggestions tbh. I like some of the ideas so far.

The next round might be a tough one for me, it's not a genre name that has ever shaped the way I think about music, I'm not sure I've ever even come across it outside of ilm.

french cricket in the usa (ledge), Wednesday, 13 November 2024 09:18 (five months ago)

is it just a sound, or an era? would tracks from the 90s or later count?

french cricket in the usa (ledge), Wednesday, 13 November 2024 09:35 (five months ago)

Yes lots of PowerPop from the 90s like teenage fan club but it’s prime was 70s/80s

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 10:21 (five months ago)

If you believe pitchfork:

Why has no one thought to better organize the institution of power pop? Ever since Big Star chimed in with their #1 Record, bands of all stripes—the pop group with a shreddy guitarist, the pivoting mid-career punks, the shoegaze band going sober—have gathered loosely under this jubilant banner to pay tribute to broken hearts through hooks and harmonies. At some point, an intrepid fan could have borrowed from the various committees that oversee ska and emo and split power pop into waves, or at the very least adopted a post- or a nü- prefix along the way to divide a genre that’s collected bands since the Nixon era, from the Raspberries to the Go-Gos to Superchunk to the New Pornographers.

enochroot, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 12:14 (five months ago)

And looking ahead to R3, I'm assuming "songs that make you feel cool" is implying ones that make you feel hip/down with your fellow kids rather than literally cold?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 12:54 (five months ago)

Also loving that this league will still be going into next year

groovypanda, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 12:55 (five months ago)

Groovypanda: yeah it’s not music about cold temperatures but that might be interesting as a concept tbh.

I guess everybody has a different definition of what would make somebody feel cool. For me it isn’t necessarily music that makes you feel hip with the fellow kids, but rather music that hypes me up when trying to achieve something. Music that makes me go “I’m totally going to nail this”.

I’ll give an IRL example: back when I was in highschool there was a semester where T. Rex was the artist that always made me feel like the coolest mf when listening to it. Twice when I was vibing to it while listening on my headphones, I was asked what I was listening to and when I gave them the headphones they definitely didn’t make me feel hip. It was more in the line of “moka, this is lame, why are you listening to this old people music?”. Didn’t stop me from feeling cool when listening to it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2024 14:32 (five months ago)

The way certain hip hop music makes me feel tough while driving and I'm probably the least tough person of all the people I know. Or how certain electronic music makes me feel hedonistic and reckless but I'm actually a very self-governed person.

imago, Thursday, 14 November 2024 11:51 (five months ago)

Some tracks/artists I was expecting but quite a few surprises too

groovypanda, Thursday, 14 November 2024 12:17 (five months ago)

Agreed, max 3 upvotes would be better. I thought the mechanics of last round were bang on.

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 14 November 2024 12:36 (five months ago)

I imagine the mechanics are already set for the entire 12-round tournament, so maybe we should stop whining about it, but... why limit the upvotes at all? If someone wants to spend all 18 points on a muppets song, shouldn't they be allowed? limiting upvotes will just flatten the results.

enochroot, Thursday, 14 November 2024 15:10 (five months ago)

Yeah, limiting downvotes probably fine but not allowing 3 points means voters having to find songs to, possibly reluctantly, give points to, and it also means that extreme enthusiasm can't be registered as a vote

imago, Thursday, 14 November 2024 15:14 (five months ago)

Vote mechanics can be modified each round iirc.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 15:34 (five months ago)

yeah, it's not a huge deal but the 3 votes per track thing was pretty good I think, basically made me separate the tracks I liked into three separate tiers which is a good way of ranking things for me.

silverfish, Thursday, 14 November 2024 16:06 (five months ago)

It would be kind of funny to invert the upvotes and downvotes

Like, you have to 20 downvotes to distribute but 2 upvotes, how does that change the way you evaluate the songs?

DJP, Thursday, 14 November 2024 16:35 (five months ago)

ill add the extra votes!

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 14 November 2024 16:56 (five months ago)

OMG have to do a haters round at some point for sure!

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 14 November 2024 18:21 (five months ago)

If I ever pick a theme, I would be tempted to do a "Songs you like but everybody else hates" round, and having more downvotes than upvotes would be useful there

silverfish, Thursday, 14 November 2024 21:21 (five months ago)

Apologies for repeating what I wrote in the chat: I got the playlist this morning, and it says the votes are due tomorrow. Is there a way we can add an extra day or two for voting? There's a bunch of songs that are new to me, and want to give them their deserved attention/assessment.

Front-loaded albums are musical gerrymandering (Prefecture), Thursday, 14 November 2024 21:41 (five months ago)

DJP, Thursday, 14 November 2024 21:49 (five months ago)

that 'tomorrow' is misleading too, it's 16 dec 8am utc - so in 34 hours.

I'm a bit all over the place in this round with my rules of awarding points, specifically on how it's affected by how well I know the song already. I guess there's a bit of a bonus for tracks that are new to me, but I'm still giving two points to at least one all-time fave.

imago, Saturday, 16 November 2024 13:04 (five months ago)

I don’t think there was any sort of stylistic violation in this round. You go back to the original thread and there is so much breathless adoration for that nonsense, it’s completely valid to put that song up as an example of the type of thing a vocal contingent of ILM would go apeshit over.

DJP, Saturday, 16 November 2024 13:10 (five months ago)

I didn't even think of it as a shitpost, seemed entirely fair enough to me!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 18 November 2024 16:17 (five months ago)

Here's a tip: play the track on Spotify just before you click through to submit it to the league. It should then appear at the top of your "recently played" suggestions. This is how I always do things, just in case the wrong version pops up in search.

mike t-diva, Monday, 18 November 2024 16:36 (five months ago)

My faith! For more than forty years I have been speaking prose listening to power pop while knowing nothing of it, and I am the most obliged person in the world to you this playlist for telling me so.

It's a genre (of sorts) that I've historically loathed, at least the US alt-rock end of it. What's been exciting for me is that hearing it all together, it starts to make sense; I can get into its vibe. If I heard most of those tracks come up on Discover Weekly I'd still reach for skip, but the sum is greater than the parts

Alba, Tuesday, 19 November 2024 07:38 (five months ago)

Glad to see [ redacted] doing well as I was also going to post a (different) song by that group but then changed it when it said someone had already chosen a song by them.

I'm wondering if there's a bug on the app as some of the tracks that had no write ups when voting now have one when you look at the results

when you make a comment with your submission it gives you the option of keeping the comment hidden until results, presumably like if it might give something away about who the submitter is.

i am humbled by that round. there i was riding high thinking i had found this forgotten obscurity that everyone would go gaga over and i ended up near the bottom, alas. trying to really ascertain the aforementioned "discerning taste" of our group, lessons learned... that said, i am all over the map deciding on my submission for this one...

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 21 November 2024 14:25 (five months ago)

I keep thinking I should go with something not quite as well-known every round but every time there's at least one person who hadn't heard my song and likes it, so I think I'll probably just continue going with what feels like the best answer and not go out of my way to seek out a hidden gem. Not sure this is a winning strategy though.

silverfish, Thursday, 21 November 2024 14:37 (five months ago)

Lavator: For what is worth I had never heard the track or the band you submitted and I enjoyed it!

The top 2 was a bit surprising to me. When I saw The Beths and the dB's amongst the noms I thought for sure one of those two would be the winners.

Had no idea Throwing Muses were loved so much by the ilm crowd and frankly never thought of them as power-pop, but it works! They were one of my favorite bands at one point in highschool and it's been probably a decade or more since I heard any of their music. Having fun revisting them after all these years.

-

I think this next round has the potential to be a bloodbath as the concept of "cool" can vary wildly from one person to the next.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 21 November 2024 14:41 (five months ago)

I'm definitely taking it to mean a soundtrack to feeling cool in a detached kind of way, not hip

Alba, Thursday, 21 November 2024 14:57 (five months ago)

xp thanks Moka!

Cool is a funny thing, it's a bit like zen - it's generally not cool to consciously think you're cool, so as soon as you become aware of it, you lose it. Some of the coolest music I can think of does not necessarily make me feel cool, because it comes from a paradigm so far outside my own, and I'd feel decidedly uncool to really absorb and identify with it while listening. But I suspect that's going to make this a very interesting round!

Hi groovypanda,

Thank you for reaching out!  Also, sorry that you needed to...

Music League has been growing and with that comes challenges we didn't anticipate. We are expanding our team as quickly as possible. For now, we cannot promise that we'll be able to address your concern as soon as we, and you, would like.

But, we may have an easy(ish) solution. One that should solve missing notification issues for android and a number of smaller bugs:

If you are currently playing on our mobile app (from Apple's App Store or Google Play), we strongly recommend you 1) delete the existing app 2) download our "progressive web app" (from the link below). 3) Follow the prompts to add an icon to your home screen 4) register your existing account via Spotify (make sure you use the same Spotify account you use on the mobile app).

Start here: Music League

iPhone users click: "Play on iOS"
Android users click: "Play on Android"
Desktop/Laptop users click "Play on Web"

Cheers,
Your Friends @ Music League

― DJP, Tuesday, November 26, 2024 9:28 AM

In this round's EPMD track, I spoke about the excitement of MTV and emerging hip-hop radio of the era. But I also remember at least one radio station in the Lexington/Richmond KY area whose promos/bumpers would emphatically state that they played "ABSOLUTELY *NO* RAP!", which would be followed by a sound effect/parody of beat-boxing that resembled hyperventilation. This was 35 years ago! Silly of me to figure such attitudes had faded away, I guess

That "like better than the original" part of the cover round is really stymieing a bunch of choices I'd like to make. Obvs there are some covers that are miles better than the original, but I'm having trouble thinking of any that would spark excitement from fellow players. I'm overflowing with covers that I like as much as the originals or in different ways from the originals.

Eh, I've still got a day to think about it and maybe I'll come up with something, but I may end up bending the rule about liking it better.

difficult to find some, wish everyone had said in the blurbs who the original artist was, especially the one that had been translated into Japanese required a lot of detective work.

Congrats to Ledge for winning the covers round and currently dominating the league at #1!!

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 2 December 2024 02:53 (five months ago)

I'm not cool enough to be in the ILX league, but I'm in a couple of other leagues and it seems to me that this game is less about gamifying your music taste and more about gaming the system so that you win. I had one round where you had to name the best rock song of the '70s and I nominated Stairway to Heaven, even though I don't like it all that much and I really think the best rock song of the '70s is The Last One by Les Rallizes Dénudés. But nominating that wouldn't have got me as many votes. Basically I nominate songs that I think are going to do well, not songs I like.

There's also that thing where you get obsessed with being the first to nominate a song before someone else, because it's considered bad form to nominate a song by an artist someone else has already nominated a different song by. So I end up poised over the keyboard waiting for nominations to go live so I can be the first to nominate a really obvious sure-fire vote-winner.

this is a specious distinction and I feel attacked!

imago, Monday, 2 December 2024 11:22 (five months ago)

when it's some cool AOR groove it's sharing, when it's Harry Merry it's imposition eh

imago, Monday, 2 December 2024 11:23 (five months ago)

the only valid distinction imo is 'play to win' vs 'play to show off some possibly obscure stuff i like' and ideally there's a middle way that incorporates both to an extent while matching the challenge aptly. i accept Harry Merry was entirely the latter, although losing even to Tame Impala wasn't the plan

imago, Monday, 2 December 2024 11:28 (five months ago)

Harry Merry track was awesome, fuck the haters

Alba, Monday, 2 December 2024 11:36 (five months ago)

brimstead, Monday, 2 December 2024 14:45 (five months ago)

As far as I can tell, nobody here is playing to win, I think it would be a boring league if most people were, I think that sometimes the obvious choice is sometimes the thing that feels the most right though.

silverfish, Monday, 2 December 2024 14:58 (five months ago)

I guess that's mostly aimed at me? For the record, I certainly don't view what you're doing as stupid, it's just a different approach. For me, the fun of this is in getting as many points as possible, not in sharing or discovering music. If that makes me a psychopath, OK.

I just jumped into this league because I love the conceit

DJP, Monday, 2 December 2024 16:12 (five months ago)

Speaking as someone that won the first league, I didn’t notice anyone submitting songs to win. I think the choices were overall very interesting and some of the concepts like “songs your mom or dad loved” even break the norm of how you’d even play to win a round like that. The blurbs in the ilm league are what makes it stands out than most leagues I’ve joined (and left).

I think everyone on this league could be described as a music nerd, so obvious choices might only work in very specific rounds. ilm does have a hivemind of its own but it’s sort of unique, so picks that might be obvious to ilm would make people in other leagues frown or ignore them.

I might have won the first league by consistency and getting a considerable lead in the first round, none of my songs in the subsequent rounds did that well. The system punishes users who submit and forget to vote and missing round will also make it very hard to climb to the top. So that plays into the consistency as well.

imago, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 07:59 (five months ago)

I would never be so cynical as to choose a track purely to try and win the most points. The fact that my favourite song as a 12 year old was Nina Simone's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is simply a peculiar coincidence

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Tuesday, 3 December 2024 08:29 (five months ago)

lol xp

Also might be mistaken but slightly dubious that 12 year olds were digging some of these selections *raises eyebrow*

(although haven't read the write ups yet so that might explain some of the choices)

groovypanda, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 09:11 (five months ago)

I don’t know, this all scans to me

But also, by 12 I was very into a wild variety of stuff due to two older brothers and a father who were all extremely musically inquisitive; I used to play “I Zimbra” on repeat and almost picked it

DJP, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 12:05 (five months ago)

the wildest pick there is something I was into aged 7, so I believe everything

bad love's all you'll get from me (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 December 2024 12:26 (five months ago)

Yeah looking at my generation at 12 and scanning the charts and albums released in that certain period of time I feel it’s a crucial age for discovering one’s own music taste. And if anyone in your generation had older friends, brothers, sisters your taste would be marked by music they were listening to as well. Particularly back then when the internet wasn’t a thing and music consumption was dictated by sharing mixtapes or watching mtv and listening to the radio.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 3 December 2024 14:22 (five months ago)

DJP, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 14:27 (five months ago)

Very much the opposite for me, my parents didn't really listen to music, I had very limited experience with music listening, if this had been for age 11 I probably would have had to select "G.I. Joe Theme Song" or something like that.

silverfish, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 14:32 (five months ago)

one day pop gave my brother and I records to use on my turntable, mostly stuff he had duplicates of, and it was all like Billy Joel, Santana, Jane Olivor, etc...

the first time I turned on the radio for myself so I could stop being bullied for not knowing radio pop, I was maybe 12 or 13. which is how I got heavily into Ace of Base lol.

12 was about the age my very churchy parents began allowing me to listen to Top 40 radio. I'd been aware of things like Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Weird Al, and various hard rock/hair metal bands and albums by listening at friends' houses, and that was where I saw the entirety of my MTV intake, but I was mainly limited to whatever I heard on local radio stations, in movie soundtracks, and Casey Kasem's countdown every Sunday after church. In fact, the first piece of physical music I ever bought was the 45 of "Who's Johnny" by El De Barge because my mom liked Short Circuit enough to allow it (a film which aged like milk).

Have not voted yet but am always like 15th-20th out of 25 and positive this will be the case again, even though I have been foolish enough to once again pick a song I have an emotional relationship with.

Pleasantly surprised to see how well my pick is doing. I feel bad about my low-effort comments and vote distribution this time around but I’ve just had it this week and I wasn’t wowed by a lot of the new-to-me stuff on the list; some v talented musicians but a lot of it seemed very Tumblr somehow. Nothing wrong with that, but I don’t connect.

I like the fact that the most of the playlists so far have been a mix of well-known stuff and obscure stuff (and in-between stuff), I think it makes for a more interesting mix than if everyone was consciously trying avoid anything too 'obvious'

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 12:50 (four months ago)

Lol I’m sorry. A Forest is really one of the best songs ever isn’t it? I swear I’m not playing to win. I had a daughter on COVID year, then another COVID year, then just having a daughter… and I live in a small city where nothing happens so if I want to go to a good concert I have to take a plane which makes it so hard and expensive to see live music.

So yeah, might have won this round but in my book I lose because I haven’t been to a concert in what feels like a lifetime. I feel so much older since then. But what a concert.

Here’s the setlist:

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 12:55 (four months ago)

So, in case I place in the top three again. I think I got a solution so noone tries to play to win and to keep things varied: winning the last league disqualifies you from suggesting the next set of rounds. We keep things varied that way and frankly more interesting.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 13:22 (four months ago)

I meant winning two leagues in a row but you get the idea

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 13:23 (four months ago)

Or rather placing in the top three two times in a row.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 13:23 (four months ago)

I could also veto myself so another user can play in the next league but this is so fun.

I don’t think being punished for consistently picking good songs makes sense, personally. My primary goal out of this is to enjoy music with friends, followed by not accidentally placing last

I finished 7th, 9th, 16th, 10th, 5th and 11th. I guess better than most. I've been honest and not "playing to win" except for the first round where that was basically the category. Unless I change my mind before submitting, I expect my lowest placement in this next round.

silverfish, Tuesday, 10 December 2024 14:23 (four months ago)

Since I joined Spotify in '17, about 90% of my listening choices for all years afterward fall either within whatever that current year was, or the one immediately before. Which means that unless the category kinda demands it, most of my submissions are going to be from the last 8-10ish years, and due to the fractured music landscape, they'll likely be fairly obscure.

Sure, I'm banking on y'all liking them only after a few listens, but it's no big whoop if they don't score very high - most of the fun is getting to basically DJ a micro-set for people whose witty banter I've read on the board (sorry, 'borad') for several years, then reading their reactions and seeing which styles or artists connect with the league, and which do not. And I gotta say, the lack of predictability has led this to being my favorite intellectual challenge (fuck off, wordle; back of the line, sporkle)!

I kind of regret not doing it, even if I'm sure what I did actually pick is going to do much better than that song would have.

I hope to fuck it’s “Skating.”

My relationship with ACBX (A Charlie Brown Xmas) is getting more complicated over time — a weird mix of nostalgia, rejection of nostalgia on principle, appreciation for the thing in itself, detestation of children singing, overexposure, appreciation for the thing being less rebarbative than 99% of Xmas music, resentment of the commitments of the holiday season, complicated emotions around Xmas itself v tangled up in childhood memories, irritation that the simple pleasures of the thing in itself are tainted by all these external factors, shut up you twat can’t you just put all that aside and just enjoy something at face value for once in your overthinking life, etc.

brimstead, Wednesday, 18 December 2024 15:38 (four months ago)

I think ML should have an option for delayed round starts — like 24 hours between the results of one round and selecting songs for the next. Would encourage conversation about the previous round and the results. As it is, everyone’s brain energy quickly shifts to the new round & the old one gets relatively neglected. And of course discussing the current round’s songs before voting ends is kind of bad form.

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 18 December 2024 18:22 (four months ago)

I was genuinely surprised at the landslide winner. Not because it's bad or anything but as a Brit I didn't realise how big an impact Charlie Brown's Christmas obviously has Stateside. I don't think I've ever seen it and don't know many people this side of the pond who have.

Trying to think what the UK version would be - maybe The Snowman? Pretty sure that Aled Jones would *not" have won that round though

Charlie Brown was big here in the UK; we even had the TV show, but yeah, it's weird that the Christmas show is barely known. Was it ever shown? Some TV executive's decision holding a nation's collective Christmas memory in their hands

Alba, Thursday, 19 December 2024 06:55 (four months ago)

I don’t have any great attachment to A Charlie Brown Christmas but it was just really nice to hear in the context of the playlist. My sentimental attachment is to this album of Pete Seeger playing Christmas carols - I think this is a pretty wonderful song and maybe it would have been a little more popular than “Must Be Santa”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yOAvuE9SF8

JoeStork, Thursday, 19 December 2024 06:58 (four months ago)

As the submitter of the Charlie Brown song, I can tell you I have never seen the special! It’s just an album I really love. For those who aren’t that familiar with it, several — I think even the majority — of the songs are traditional Christmas songs, just done in the same tasteful piano trio arrangement. But the few originals that are created by Guaraldi are pretty much all stone cold classics. He ended up having a long and fruitful relationship with the Peanuts empire, soundtracking many specials. Lots of nice music in there. Actually not sure if Christmas was the first or what.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 19 December 2024 12:04 (four months ago)

This video, which was recently posted on the Charlie Brown Christmas thread, is pretty interesting. It gives a history of the album and the tv special:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiTZWV_rdeU
Apparently Dave Brubeck was their first choice, but he turned them down.

enochroot, Thursday, 19 December 2024 12:42 (four months ago)

This might be overstatement but it has always felt to me that A Charlie Brown Christmas is as impactful to American culture as the Super Bowl. It’s definitely an integral part of the Christmas experience along with The Grinch and the Rankin/Bass specials.

i cant believe no one liked tiny tim tellin his little story - i just read tiny's bio so im a bit biased by his "quirkiness"

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 19 December 2024 18:01 (four months ago)

I liked him telling his story! I hadn’t looked at the title of the song so I was listening going “what could he possibly have done that would be so offensive” so when the song started, my “oh no” was a genuine real-time reaction.

I didn’t take points off because it is a song tied to Christmas but WOW

DJP, Thursday, 19 December 2024 18:05 (four months ago)

I am fine with Tiny Tim on the whole, enjoyed the 500 Songs episode on him, but I just don't want bad AIDS jokes on my Xmas playlist.

Can any of y'all UK residents explain Shakin' Stevens to me? Of the first 4 bars we checked out in Edinburgh, 3 played Christmassy songs by him (my phone has a 'perma Shazam' setting that IDs every song it hears). I am assuming he's not Sufyan's older bro

Rock n Roll revivalist guy from Wales who was hugely successful on the uk charts in the 1980s, was still considered important enough in 2021 that the BBC ran a new article about him getting his covid vax: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-55980009

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Sunday, 22 December 2024 17:12 (four months ago)

He's a Welsh Elvis impersonator and the best-selling singles artist of the 80s in the UK, more than Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, anyone else you can think of. Can I explain why he was quite so popular? No.

bad love's all you'll get from me (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 22 December 2024 17:56 (four months ago)

Yes been looking into it. Still suspicious it might be a factoid but if it's true I guess it's in large part from sheer volume of releases

Alba, Sunday, 22 December 2024 18:03 (four months ago)

I mean, his highest position in the chart of the 80s is no 40

Best selling UK artist I could definitely believe

Alba, Sunday, 22 December 2024 18:06 (four months ago)

yeah it's a sheer numbers thing, if you have a top 200 he will have quite a few more I think, middle-market solid sellers consistently through the decade, then as soon as 1990 arrives he goes off a cliff. whereas most of the big names were only popular for half the decade.

Thanks for the compendium on Shakin' Stevens. We just departed the UK to a Shake-averse Prague, but plan to return to the safe-for-Shakin' environs of London in a week, so after The Missus asks me "Who is this? It sounds like the the music ee just heard at the Devil's Advocate", I can offer more than "I don't know, I think he's just one of those British-only things. Maybe he's the Welsh equivalent of the guy who sang 'On The Dark Side' in Eddie and the Cruisers"

Alba, Thursday, 26 December 2024 18:41 (four months ago)

Welp, as we all know, you haven't really arrived in Music League until you've finished last with a negative point total. ""Loosen" was kind of an experiment, a transmission from a part of my life that is pretty disconnected from the culture/music fandom side that I inhabit on ILX. There is this hippied out, often queer, young Jewish music scene that that track emanates from, concentrated in Philly, Brooklyn and various rural communities. I can definitely see where it seems overly embarrassingly earnest/precious and "facebookcore" (lol imago) -- these are people I have done kirtan-type singing circles with, lots of hugs and sustained eye contact. Not for everyone to say the least. In any case, it's always interesting to see how things take when you cross the streams. And I am getting back on the horse and feeling confident about my submission for this next round!

Debut singles was a good round for me, despite being a bit heavy on overfamiliar stuff. I like the entrenched positions on whether an EP is a single or not. I have to say, I did do a double take when I saw the Wikipedia entry for Legal Man saying it was Belle & Sebastian's debut single.

"This submission is in the spirit of this round, as Kate NV's multilingual album features her singing in French, Japanese and English as well as her native Russian, which is heard in this song. This record is one of my all-time favorite ILM discoveries. Major player in the salvation I got from music in that first pandemic year, when I have many fond memories of getting lost in its arty, bouncy grooves."

Yeah, that's totally doable. I run another league with friends/family, and to accommodate the parents of young children, I set it so we have a week to submit and a week to vote. This is Music League in a nutshell

enochroot, Thursday, 9 January 2025 16:45 (three months ago)

i can’t figure out which ones aren’t siblings so i might’ve voted for it?

voodoo chili, Thursday, 9 January 2025 16:58 (three months ago)

The Frogs are an alternative rock band founded in 1980, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by brothers Jimmy and Dennis Flemion. The brothers mainly wrote and performed short, catchy pop songs, but they are also known for their improvised home recordings that are delivered in a comedic style, and often include controversial issues such as race, religion, and sexuality (notably homoeroticism). A history of strife has hindered the band, although a devoted fan base that includes many well-known musicians has supported the group.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 9 January 2025 17:09 (three months ago)

Yeah, I read the wiki on them a couple of days ago. It was like a who's who of 90s US alt rock lol

groovypanda, Thursday, 9 January 2025 17:22 (three months ago)

it's funny i just posted in reminiscence of the original AllMusic Guide over on the chat for the actual Music League, and the Frogs are a band I remember reading about there 25 years ago! Them and Anal Cunt, I remember poring over the tracklists, trying to figure out if I should be revulsed or identify with the irony. Or something. I can't say I ever got into either band. But I do like the Frogs track on this playlist!

i'm gonna be more or less at the buzzer, sorry folks. but rest assured i'll get it in

Just wanted to say thank you to whomever put up PM Dawn, because it made me revisit the album now that it's streaming and whoa it's even better than I remembered it being.

Thank you all for joining the league. I’ve tried joining other leagues and the experience is not satisfying at all. I’ve enjoyed so many of these rounds and being exposed to so many cool songs out of my comfort zone and radar. It feels like being schooled by people whose music taste I deeply respect.

I’m in the top 3 this round again and I don’t like hogging the round ideas and tbh I’m out of them. So to keep things fresh I propose to split my next 4 rounds ideas to the 4 people below the top 3 (Lavator, Alba, Enochroot and Oliver Crane). Please send your round idea to motelmoka (at) gmail.com and I’ll send them to whoever organizes the next round after the brief hiatus. If you’re not interested or wont be around for next round let me know.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 10 January 2025 12:03 (three months ago)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 10 January 2025 12:04 (three months ago)

Ah, nice. I'll have a think

Alba, Friday, 10 January 2025 13:00 (three months ago)

I'm organizing the next round, so anyone with good round ideas can just ILMail me directly.

I was planning to start on 1/24, and have it on a steady weekly cadence (noms every thursday night, votes due every tuesday night), but I know there was at least 1 request to go slower next round, so let me know what folks prefer.

enochroot, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:03 (three months ago)

I think a week per round is good, also always having same days of the week for noms/votes is good. I usually listen to the playlist while working, so having votes due during the weekend was less convenient.

silverfish, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:09 (three months ago)

Pretty much what I was going to say! Thanks for stepping up btw (and thanks Chaki for running the last one).

birming man (ledge), Friday, 10 January 2025 14:11 (three months ago)

Looking forward to the next one!

DJP, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:13 (three months ago)

I have a bunch of ideas for rounds btw if anyone is lacking in inspiration

silverfish, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:19 (three months ago)

Send them over, Silverfish! (i've never tried the ILM Mail feature, but i'm assuming it just forwards to my email address)
I don't mind soliciting ideas from any and all players -- that could result in some fun rounds.

enochroot, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:32 (three months ago)

alright I've sent you an ILM mail, let me know if you got it

silverfish, Friday, 10 January 2025 14:47 (three months ago)

enochroot, Friday, 10 January 2025 15:21 (three months ago)

Alright, I’ll try to think of a few, should prob change my ML display name

JoeStork, Friday, 10 January 2025 16:23 (three months ago)

Excited to find out what the themes are (and happy to wait until the 24th to do so).

My only suggestion was for a "songs with fewer than X amount of streams" one but don't know how easy that would be for everyone, especially if you only use the mobile app for Spotify

groovypanda, Friday, 10 January 2025 16:25 (three months ago)

And yeah this was a lot of fun, my reign at the top was short like leprechauns but glad I didn’t fall too far, if only I’d picked Seven Nation Army for the last round…

JoeStork, Friday, 10 January 2025 16:30 (three months ago)

xp yeah I don’t pay for Spotify and just redo the playlists in Tidal so I wouldn’t see the stream count

JoeStork, Friday, 10 January 2025 16:32 (three months ago)

FYI, you don't need a paying account, just a spotify login, to open up a song in a browser window where it will show you the play count:
https://open.spotify.com/track/0nKhoWXdu9LrYEaWm9HGig

Pro tip: that track code in the URL ("0nKhoWXdu9LrYEaWm9HGig") is what is used to order the playlists, so if you want your song at the top, keep searching until you find a song that starts with "00".

MOKA REIGNS SUPREME

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 10 January 2025 17:23 (three months ago)

Indeed. And I did have a quiet chuckle to myself when Moka finished mid-table this round and yet that track was still the only one I gave 3 points to

groovypanda, Friday, 10 January 2025 17:33 (three months ago)

Ty groovypanda! Apologies for not returning the favor and downvoting the INXS track :/

And enochroot, in accordance with Moka ceding his picks, I emailed you a few round theme ideas, feel free to choose the one you like best or let me know if you want me to pick one

Alba, Friday, 10 January 2025 22:33 (three months ago)

Yeah thanks everyone, really enjoyed this and feeling smug to have made it to the top half of the league (if only by one).

I’m in the same boat as Lavator, I’ve been lurking here for probably a decade now but learned pretty early on to spare you all my challops so it’s been really enjoyable getting stuck in on ML, even if it meant subjecting you poor lot to obscure Blawan tracks over thanksgiving or whatever.

Definitely up for another game, al long as voting doesn’t end on a weekend as that’s prime toddler wrangling time for me atm.

This league was some serious 'Hey, Prefecture, there are worlds and worlds of music you do not know' schooling-me shit. I fucking loved it, despite my own close-to-relegation performance. But I'm not 'only' here to win (although, that would be nice) - finding amazing songs that I had no idea existed before (which, yeah, y'all delivered at an absolutely-ridiculous Stormzy at Glasto level of rowdiness), while getting to introduce songs I love to people whose musical tastes i admire, and offering comments about said songs, SHIT FUCKIN' SHIT, YEAH!

OK, sure, fuckin' A. It would be nice to win. Look out, next round!

I am wondering what to put for first band seen live as I was taken to festivals even as a toddler (first Glastonbury aged 4) and first without parents would be some local Leeds bands at a festival, almost certainly not on Spotify. At an indoor gig? Some friends, also not on Spotify. hm.

Inside The Wasp Factory with Gregg Wallace (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 21 January 2025 17:14 (three months ago)

yeah, first band live for me is going to imply skipping a bunch of local/cover/friends bands that are not on Spotify which are the real first bands I saw live

silverfish, Tuesday, 21 January 2025 17:26 (three months ago)

I think the best interpretation is the first act you remember seeing live in person that you can find on Spotify

Right, the countries category was based on CaAL's idea.

I added the uniqueness clause to encourage choices outside of the usual suspects... you could try to submit a song from Iceland or Jamaica, but Moldova or Djibouti would be a lot safer from collisions.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 10:29 (three months ago)

Lol I’m not 100% sure which one was it. It probably was (band redacted) when I was 6. The first band I saw live that I actually paid a ticket for is a cool one.

So there’s two ways to approach it, as a guess of the earliest live show I can remember but it will be a kids’ music thing and not something I actually elected to go to.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 22 January 2025 13:48 (three months ago)

Thinking about it now, I'm going to have to look up some dates for first band I saw live (which is on spotify). There's a maybe 50% chance it's someone who is now "cancelled" (rightfully so).

silverfish, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 13:52 (three months ago)

I think for that round, choosing the first band you chose to see live (even if it wasn't actually the first band you saw) is fine

groovypanda, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 13:53 (three months ago)

that makes sense, but as a dad to a little baby i wouldn't mind a round of kids music that doesn't suck lol

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 15:30 (three months ago)

Babies love early 90s Belgian techno. The more Hoover sounds, the better. I’m not even kidding, I played a lot of Joey Beltram and Human Resource for my kids and it calmed them down immensely.

I got the idea from a parenting book that said babies were used to loud whooshing noises inside the womb, so deathly quiet rooms can be disorienting for them and make them cry, so we put our kids in a room that got a lot of ambient traffic noice and I played a lot of bass-heavy dance music for them and they would just chill the fuck out, it was incredible.

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 18:14 (three months ago)

I’m very annoyed because the intent was very much NOT the first show you chose to attend unless that also happened to be the first show you went to.

I do have to ask, why ask the top placements of the previous league for round ideas if you’re going to change them anyway?

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Wednesday, 22 January 2025 18:22 (three months ago)

when this thread introduced me to Music League I actually joined a league that was basically this verbatim. I did get turned on to a few things but for the most part the participants were not especially creative. Like one of the rounds was something along the lines of "punk for kids" and like half the entries were just covers of Disney songs. But it would be fun to share some of our other early music memories in chat when we get to that round. Actually now that I think of it there must be an ILM thread on the topic?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 22 January 2025 23:51 (three months ago)

Beatless, drumless danceability, people! No need to get annoyed over definitions of round four's excercise when round one is just 'round the corner.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 24 January 2025 00:08 (three months ago)

It took me a while to work out how to submit my votes. It looks like you're given an allocation of 10 plus points and 2 minus points, which you can distribute amongst the songs however you want, i.e. you can give a song more than 1 plus/minus points, or you can leave a song on 0 points.

Is this still how this works? Do we vote based on which songs we like best/least or which we think fit the challenge best/worst? Both?

How much straying from the concept is acceptable? I figure this is going to be a couple of +3s and then I'm going to have to figure out what to do with the rest of my points.

If anyone fancies another league, these year-based ones have been counting back from 2010 and are now at 1963. A good crowd of people there, including one or two who have been on ILM in the past.

Being before my birth year for a few now, having some imposter syndrome, but enjoying the yearly playlists in that series of year leagues. Resorting to an early piece from a favorite for 1963.

Also, Alba, your personal playlist links are appreciated!

This is my first time doing an ilm league but for next season (if you haven't done already) doing a somewhat topical "xxxxxxxx who just xxxxxxx whats on your playlist" category could be fun.

Have we really gotten to the point where we are going to downplay a song like “Work It” just because we already know it?

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Monday, 3 February 2025 22:17 (three months ago)

There's no right or wrong reason to up or down vote something, I think

silverfish, Monday, 3 February 2025 22:34 (three months ago)

I hesitate to give upvotes to a song I'm really familiar with, but wouldn't actually downvote it.

Inside The Wasp Factory with Gregg Wallace (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 3 February 2025 22:34 (three months ago)

that's been my approach generally, but I've had to down vote stuff I liked in the past (not this round), so sometimes you just have to come up with a reason

silverfish, Monday, 3 February 2025 22:37 (three months ago)

I didn't upvote that one because I just assumed everyone else would and it didn't need my help to win.

But I also think it makes the playlists more interesting if everyone doesn't assume that obvious submissions will outperform the obscure ones. I'm definitely here for the discoveries.

enochroot, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 00:22 (three months ago)

you gotta use your downvotes - no judgement

groovypanda, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 05:39 (three months ago)

We keep telling people “there’s no penalty for picking a well-known track and then 75% people get penalized for picking a well-known track. I think we should be a bit more honest about what we’re doing here.

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 05:41 (three months ago)

Both people to have voted since the above complaint have awarded 3 points to the song in question. There's a reason we don't discuss individual song rankings before it's actually over. That said, might be time to put Hot Dad away for a bit

imago, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 08:59 (three months ago)

And also this round, with only 5 voters left over half the tracks are still in contention for a podium finish.

Plus we've had some massively well known tracks win rounds in the past so they're not always penalised

For me, it's a fun game that I'm enjoying with the added bonus of discovering plenty of good music. It would definitely lose some of its appeal to me if, for example, this round had just been 24 of the greatest (and most well known) rap tracks ever

groovypanda, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 10:53 (three months ago)

A song from Medulla won the first round and it was arguably the most obvious and well-known pick for the round concept.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 11:34 (three months ago)

It doesn’t seem to be a constant, it’s more about vibes I guess.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 11:37 (three months ago)

Also the current #1 (and the one that is likely to win) is arguably also a pretty well-known song from a very beloved hip hop icon.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 11:41 (three months ago)

there are shades of ubiquitousness, from "heard once before", to "hear often" all the way up to "this is the #1 example of this thing and everyone knows every note by heart" - and there's a sweet spot somewhere on that continuum, probably something like "I know this well but it's a pleasure and surprise to encounter it again here in this context" - like that Cure song which won a round last time. Of course this all only counts if people like it in the first place, very different dynamic if people dislike it.

Inside The Wasp Factory with Gregg Wallace (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 11:46 (three months ago)

Save us Moka, start the albums rollout :D

imago, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 12:06 (three months ago)

My votes depend on how much I enjoy listening to the track now. Some classics hold up well, others have lost their lustre. In this round, it was 2-1 in favour of the former.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 12:42 (three months ago)

Yeah I don't downvote popular tracks on principle; sometimes it might be a tie breaker, sometimes I'm just not that into it.

Looking ahead to the obscure countries round, with 25 players and 195 countries there is an 80% probability that two people will pick the same country just by chance (for real! it's the birthday paradox). I think it would be fine to downvote more obvious countries, but not to have enforced downvotes if two people pick the same country.

Inside The Wasp Factory with Gregg Wallace (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 14:39 (three months ago)

see the problem is that song is "Zip Zap Rap" and therefore does not fit "anything but rap", whereas the Rappers don't like rap (they're afraid of it)

frogbs, Tuesday, 4 February 2025 14:42 (three months ago)

I tried nominating the Parappa the Rapper song that is based around Can’s “turtles have short legs” (aka the Instructor Mooselini rap).

Fortunately for the competition it wasn’t available as it would have been an easy win.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 4 February 2025 15:40 (three months ago)

I can envision an issue with familiarity in the next round, not because of the ubiquity of a specific song, but the likelihood of 2 people choosing the same artist within different guises or band names, potentially splitting the votes. But I'm super-psyched because this round might set a record in the number of "holy crap, I had no idea that existed, where has this been all of my life!?" songs

groovypanda, Saturday, 8 February 2025 21:26 (two months ago)

It's basically impossible for me because

* Went to festivals with hippy parents, probably saw someone at Glastonbury 1983? But no memory of it.
* Then vague memories of local folk festival, I could name some of the performers in the kids tent, very unlikely to be on Spotify.
* I remember a guy at the commune who would play accordion sometimes released an album, don't think that counts as a gig. Ditto a guitar guy.
* Actually remember bits from a couple of acts from Cambridge Folk Festival, was it '91? But doesn't feel like My First Gig at all.
* First I went to without parents was Heineken Free Festival in Leeds in 1995, the first band on were a local group called Jack Planet, who (research tells me) never released any records
* So think I'm going to have to go with the first act I saw that day who actually released a record, which is uh an odd choice

Inside The Wasp Factory with Gregg Wallace (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 8 February 2025 21:41 (two months ago)

In those circumstances I'd probably just forget the festivals and go with the first actual gig I went to

Alba, Sunday, 9 February 2025 16:59 (two months ago)

I keep trying to think of something earlier but by this point I'm pretty sure my first concert is something I went to with some friends that I didn't really like much then and don't really like now either.

silverfish, Sunday, 9 February 2025 19:58 (two months ago)

I am basing my submission on a simple criteria - agency. Who was he first concert of a musician for which I thought "I want to see them live", then I personally purchased a ticket?

All apologies to the hyper-corny ""rap"" artists who appeared at my then-girlfriend's church lock-ins, or competent cover bands that my junior high school would book for assemblies, like 'The Edge', etc.

Ghostkeeper - Doo Wop (3.6k)

Argh, sorry - I should have double-checked it. The last three are wrong because I missed out The Hook's count originally then the next two got out of sync then I wrongly treated the final cell as empty, ie <1,000. I've checked the rest and it's all correct. Here's the corrected version.

The other round I think is going to be a minefield will be the "small countries" one. So many obvious choices will probably not be selected (because they're obvious), and then we'll have eight Zamrock submissions. Going to be some gamesmanship there!

As I posted before there's an 80% chance of two people picking the same country - higher if we all restrict ourselves to 'obscure' ones - so I don't think the downvoting criteria is fair.

Haven't read any of the write ups yet though

groovypanda, Friday, 28 February 2025 08:58 (two months ago)

Rather than tiptoe around people's sensibilities, I think I've decided to judge each song just based on why or why not I'd want it at my own funeral. Hmm, that sounded better when it was just in my head.

Alba, Friday, 28 February 2025 09:32 (two months ago)

The format of the funeral makes a lot of difference, actually. I was thinking actual funeral, but the blurb with the round makes it sound more like a wake. How many songs there are at the ceremony also makes a difference – like if it's the only piece of music played then it's a very different proposition to it being one of many.

The format of the funeral makes a lot of difference, actually. I was thinking actual funeral, but the blurb with the round makes it sound more like a wake.

As the contributor of the round idea, I meant the word 'funeral' as an all-encompassing term for 'events acknowledging one's passing', since I do not recall ever hearing the term 'wake' used in my SoCal and rural KY upbringing, so proceed as you prefer.

I get why it might feel a bit of a leap when compared to the other rounds.

In another league, I suggested this idea and it went really well, however that league had no downvotes, and because it consisted primarily of friends/family, as well as 5 couples, basically every round was something heavily sentimental (first song you play when moving into a new house/apartment, song you associate with first love, first song you had/would have at your wedding/commitment ceremony, etc.), thus it was less of a tonal left turn.

Playlist is here for anyone who wants to play along at home https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2R7azeuckZab8MFLTxwlO3?si=h1pMm1PbR0G3or9LuAs4rQ

Jesus Christ, this playlist should be submitted to speed up hostage negotiations

Steely Danzig: Turn Up 'Where Eagles Dare', Neighbors Are Listening (Prefecture), Friday, 14 March 2025 17:01 (one month ago)

This playlist is amazingly terrible

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Saturday, 15 March 2025 20:48 (one month ago)

I feel queasy having just listened to it. I need ear-freshener.

Some of you have a very low threshold for annoyance.

Indexed, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 20:00 (one month ago)

I think I wouldn’t find most of these songs to be incredibly annoying if heard separately in a a single dose, but I have the patience of a saint. Hearing them all together in an hour and a half playlist does get to my nerves in one way or another.

That said - not naming names - but there’s been songs on previous rounds that have annoyed me more than almost everything on this playlist.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 19 March 2025 02:21 (one month ago)

djp, i am glad you enjoyed the "greazy unicorn." i was honestly worried more people would like it! haha

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 19 March 2025 19:00 (one month ago)

Point of clarification - now that we have eliminated the "downvote for duplicate country" criterion, is this next round just which song did you like best? Are we supposed to be specifically weighing obscurity?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 19 March 2025 19:18 (one month ago)

Also I just want to say to those who didn't find Phish particularly annoying and thus did not give me points, but also said you have no desire to hear any more: cowards! If you can abide by "Contact" there just may be Phish you will actually dig. Allow me to indoctrinate you. Meet us in the Phish thread and follow Ivy's path!

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 19 March 2025 19:20 (one month ago)

“Greazy Unicorn” was legit rad! Like an angry version of a Friday Night Funkin’ song

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Wednesday, 19 March 2025 20:09 (one month ago)

don't get me wrong i find it very annoying, but in an admirable way

I think just like other rounds you vote using a complex personal formula of how much you like the song and how well it fits the category.

Alba, Wednesday, 19 March 2025 21:04 (one month ago)

Cursing the previous category. Have had Frankie Sinatra on a continuous loop in my head for over 24 hours now.

dentist looking too comfortable singing the blues (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 20 March 2025 13:47 (one month ago)

This is why I only listened to that playlist once

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Thursday, 20 March 2025 15:28 (one month ago)

yeah, same for me. I relistened to a couple of the songs I liked to finalize which ones will actually get down votes. Some songs I didn't listen to all the way through.

silverfish, Thursday, 20 March 2025 15:34 (one month ago)

Greazy Unicorn was delightfully wild but I still gave it 3 votes up because it imo nailed the round. I did like it though.

gman59, Thursday, 20 March 2025 19:25 (one month ago)

three weeks pass...

this league has been a whirlwind. went from consistently discovering a bunch of great stuff, to a few rounds of just the worst tracks i've heard in years, and now back to some really nice lesser known tracks.

gman59, Tuesday, 15 April 2025 18:53 (three weeks ago)

yeah would def prefer the rounds focus on discovery, rather than gamesmanship. i am all for high degree-of-difficulty categories, but would rather have that result in learning about great music (like the obscure countries or stump the experts rounds)

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 April 2025 20:04 (three weeks ago)

I think the discovery piece is great but I would never penalize someone for picking a familiar song that fits the topic at hand, unlike seemingly everyone else in the league

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Tuesday, 15 April 2025 20:50 (three weeks ago)

there were def some obscure categories I had to skip because I couldn't think of a single song that qualified. then the app stopped working for me for a few weeks lol

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 April 2025 20:52 (three weeks ago)

Big congratulations to the Season 3 winners!

1. Moka: 243 points
2. ledge: 198 points
3. groovypanda: 198 points

Moka is the undisputed champ of the league, having won all 3 rounds by a comfortable margin, but ledge and groovypanda have also been on the pedestal before.

Season 4 will start after a 2 week break (feedback taken: no "bad music" rounds this time, or weird voting rules)

There will definitely be a few open slots if anyone new wants to join.

enochroot, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 11:03 (three weeks ago)

Thanks, enochroot: your efforts are hugely appreciated.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 11:15 (three weeks ago)

Seconded. Has been great and the cadence is perfect for me. Nice round to finish with.

Alba, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 12:30 (three weeks ago)

this was a lot of fun even though I am terrible at actually winning. Enjoying it because it's both making me listen to a lot of stuff I would normally not listen to and it's also really making me dig through my musical memories to find the best match for each category.

silverfish, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:31 (three weeks ago)

My "Music League Keepers" playlist now holds 211 tracks. This is such an effective way for me to discover music, especially from genres into which I rarely stray.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:34 (three weeks ago)

Yep, thanks enochroot

I quite enjoyed the changed voting in those rounds though

And agree with imago that the voting period does feel a tad long but it's nice having each round start on the same day of the week so overall happy with the cadence

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:37 (three weeks ago)

Are 209 of them Inspector Norse? xp

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:37 (three weeks ago)

thanks enochroot, congrats moka! now where did I put those ideas for new rounds...

constant gravy (ledge), Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:43 (three weeks ago)

I'm thinking of a couple of categories... will probably send something soon

silverfish, Wednesday, 16 April 2025 13:52 (three weeks ago)

This has been a fun league! Thanks everyone for your selections, blurbs and comments every round. The league has been one of the few bright things to look forward to in this dire times.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 April 2025 14:37 (three weeks ago)

Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this league. Really enjoying it + digging deep into my own brain.

I hope my comments above about preferring music discovery didn't influence you to get rid of bad music rounds or weird voting, if people like them I'm happy to participate, I just personally like the discovery part. Its all fun though. I don't want to discourage creative or weird rounds just because of my comments. I would have never heard that crazy unicorn song and nobody would have known about Lara Trump's musical endeavors, I'd hate to rob people of that.

Yeah, it was a total blast! It's also rowdy to get a curated weekly playlist unlike anything I'd ever encounter in the wild

Season 4 categories are up:

The first round picks are due in about a week, by end of day (GMT) May 1st.

Newcomers welcome!

enochroot, Friday, 25 April 2025 11:47 (one week ago)

yessss - loving the categories!

constant gravy (ledge), Friday, 25 April 2025 11:49 (one week ago)

Woohoo! A decided move in the direction of Eno Oblique Strategies-esque categories (a very positive thing for me)

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 25 April 2025 11:54 (one week ago)

I'm in! A lot of technical categories, which are not my forte, but I'm up for the challenge

Alba, Friday, 25 April 2025 11:55 (one week ago)

thanks for setting up and looking forward to picking u2 for the first round

Love the categories and glad for the move away from categories like ‘post terrible music’ 😂👍

I thought a lot of the categories from last round were interesting but there were several where I just drew a total blank. these I think I can do :)

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Friday, 25 April 2025 15:46 (one week ago)

(I would never post something I didn't genuinely love myself just in order to annoy people, but previous rounds of this game have made it clear to me that some of you are not on the same page as me wrt what constitutes 'terrible music'. However, I will continue to speak my truth.)

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Friday, 25 April 2025 15:49 (one week ago)

Hopped aboard this round, as Bustermumbles. Excellent thought put into the round categories. Will be a good stretch for me to find submissions as a fan of music, not a player.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Friday, 25 April 2025 17:03 (one week ago)

yeah, same thing for me, I've never played any musical instrument, so things like weird time signatures is not something I tend to notice. Most of these I think I'll manage to find something interesting though.

Also will continue to post the music I enjoy most and resign myself to being somewhere in the bottom half of the standings

silverfish, Friday, 25 April 2025 17:38 (one week ago)

these categories look great

gman59, Friday, 25 April 2025 20:52 (one week ago)

Just under 48 hours until the new league gets underway.

(reminder that everything is 4 hours earlier this time -- for those used to getting in their entries just before the stroke of midnight EST, this time around it will be the stroke of midnight GMT)

There are still a few open slots, for any curious lurkers or lapsed veterans.

enochroot, Wednesday, 30 April 2025 01:31 (one week ago)

Just submitted and bumping thread as there's still three left to submit and only about 15 hours remaining

groovypanda, Thursday, 1 May 2025 08:25 (six days ago)

This first playlist is very fun

my favorite herbs are fennel and Drake (DJP), Monday, 5 May 2025 14:37 (two days ago)

Doubt you'll be saying that next round

groovypanda, Monday, 5 May 2025 16:06 (two days ago)

next round is making me realize I don't really listen to much music that could be described as sad

silverfish, Monday, 5 May 2025 17:58 (two days ago)

Tears in Heaven?

Indexed, Monday, 5 May 2025 18:00 (two days ago)

I have a playlist as long as yer arm. Though I haven't listened to it in ages.

constant gravy (ledge), Monday, 5 May 2025 18:04 (two days ago)

going to be a striking tone shift lol

gman59, Monday, 5 May 2025 22:17 (two days ago)

I took a pill in ibiza
