In both cases, the accent marks signal pronunciation rather than emphasis.

André is a common French name, which uses an acute accent to denote that the letter is pronounced as "ay" instead of dropped or swallowed (as in "cadre"). Because the name is so common, nobody would actually be confused if the accent mark weren't there, but it is often retained nonetheless.

Similarly, the name Beyoncé uses an accent mark to indicate that it does not rhyme with "sconce."

albumoftheyear has it's 2024 banner green because I suspect they expect BRAT to win AOTY but it's funny how none of the list counted so far have helped pushed it anywhere near the top 50.

A few ILM pop elite were definitely in on it last year and it made it to #56 on the top 77 albums list which disqualifies it from appearing this year but it would have very likely made it way higher if nommed this year. I still expect some songs to make it to the tracks poll this year.

Yeah, that's a good track. When I interviewed her she said it wasn't even going to be on the album at first — it's been her set closer for a year or two and she wanted to keep it special, something you could only hear at the gigs, but friends convinced her to record it.

Just heard this song for the first time (also my first time hearing the artist). Very nice!

Described by the Wall Street Journal as “one of modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” New York-born and Tamil Nadu-raised singer and multi-instrumentalist ganavya shares an ambitious new album, "Daughter of a Temple", via LEITER. The album follows her performance at SAULT’s acclaimed live debut in London in 2023, where, according to The Guardian, her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks.” Her first single for LEITER, "draw something beautiful," was released earlier this year in July.

For "Daughter of a Temple", ganavya invited over 30 artists from various disciplines to a ritual gathering in Houston. Consequently, the album features numerous contributors, including renowned musicians such as esperanza spalding, Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, and Peter Sellars. The results—an innovative and deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music—were initially recorded by Ryan Renteria and then further edited and mixed by Nils Frahm at LEITER's studio in Berlin in 2024.

They’re arguably more post-punk than metal, at their most stunningly sinister bringing to mind classic 4AD releases from the likes of early Cocteau Twins and Xmal Deutschland, but when a blast beat passage breaks through, it’s seamless, elegant, driven by a gorgeous darkness as much as a beastly force of malevolence. While it’s perhaps not a 50/50 split, the group are proficient in both arenas, equally fetching in corpse paint or fishnets, velvet or ash. Either way, it’s made to soundtrack a night of debauchery and decadence.

Tomorrow is…. Wednesday November 27, so if they don’t break with tradition, it could be prime time for the stats to be shared.

It’s a little earlier than before, however, so next week on Wednesday December 4 could also be possible.

Haunted Plasma reveals:

The first single from Haunted Plasma’s cascading debut, Reverse Engineer, is a creepy, slowly erupting, synthetic nightmare, of a downloaded being waking up in the wrong future. Ghostly vocals demand the listener to “give us what we want” in an Orwellian glimpse into the current dystopia we live in, where information is controlled, and thoughts are bought and sold. As McNerney intones the words “technology of power” he describes the threat of a malevolent and omnipresent artificial intelligence, as much as describing the oppressive and electromagnetic sonar pulse of Haunted Plasma’s sound itself. Psychedelic guitar hypnosis from Vanhanen snakes around Kaukolampi’s molten and morphing synths, while Leppänen’s uncanny man/machine rhythms pull our strings and animate their other-worldly mechanisms. Lots of low hanging fruit on this list, if Q magazine was still going, they would create a similar list.

Bright, new, often female-led bands (English Teacher, The Last Dinner Party) raced from social media hype to Mercury Prize glory at a hearteningly breakneck pace. Pop queens (Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Beyoncé) continued to stretch the boundaries of mainstream structures and sonics. The revered old school (Nick Cave, The Cure, The Smile, Kim Deal) released career-high albums that reasserted their roles as restless pioneers. Rap’s leading lights, both conscious and confrontational – (Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator) kept pushing the boundaries of beat to a Drake-riling degree. And enduring alternative names (Vampire Weekend, Bright Eyes, Fontaines DC) pressed ever forward, the firing pistons of the cultural engine.

Singing black-lit liturgies of bog bodies caked in mud, entranced by nocturnal landscapes flickering in the moon-glow and powered by queer enchantment, Tristwch y Fenywod are a Welsh-language gothic avant-rock power-coven. Exhumed from the depths of Leeds’ experimental underground, the trio consist of Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth (Guttersnipe, The Ephemeron Loop), Leila Lygad (Hawthonn) and Sidni Sarffwraig (Slaylor Moon, The Courtneys).

Stark, striking and bewitching, Tristwch y Fenywod’s self-titled album is their debut studio recording, following just 10 gigs and a live demo. Formed in 2022, Tristwch y Fenywod ("The Sadness of Women”) record exclusively in the Welsh language, conjuring an eldritch, subterranean, alien folk music played on dual zither, electronic drums and bass guitar. With towering, siren-like vocals curling around the Welsh consonants, accompanied by stark, martial rhythms and swirling claw-plucked strings, Tristwch y Fenywod feels like an early 4AD recording dredged from the waters of an Anglesey swamp. The effect is simultaneously chilling and stirring.

The eight tracks on the record constitute what feels like a recently rediscovered, unholy grail of edgy, atmospheric, occult feminist goth emissions. Gwretsien’s dual-zither playing scatters melodic fragments and spirals of harmony around the decimated space opened up by the lugubrious bass playing and pounding, brooding drum pads. Coupled with the Welsh vocal, Tristwch y Fenywod embody a new, unique Celtic darkwave sound, equal parts Pornography-era The Cure, Svitlana Nianio’s haunted hammered string-work and the dark beauty of Dead Can Dance or This Mortal Coil. Opener Blodyn Gwyrdd feels like the last ride of Princess Ukok, with lumbering bass and 6/8 rhythms in procession to the event horizon with an entreating, impassioned vocal and surprising lyrical theme. The doomed dancing of the zither provides the mysterious melodic bedrock throughout the album, particularly on Ferch Gyda’r Llygaid Du’s heavy funereal sway and the slowly building, paroxysmal banshee breakdown of Awen: an astonishing swell of thrilling chaos.

Let's be honest: albums reigned supreme in 2024. The Ubiquitous Festival Anthem was in short supply—especially when you consider last year's rich bounty. As such, the list below follows a more gentle curve, with nods to ambient, R&B and oddball tunes from all around the globe. Dubstep and downtempo get a strong look-in; traditional house and techno, perhaps controversially, less so.

But that's not to say the list lacks dance floor heft—you only have to look as far as incendiary floor-fillers from the likes of 1OO1O, Thoughtforms and TAAHLIAH & Elouiza. And then there's our #1, which sits somewhere between the club and the beach party. It's also the second time this artist—on this occasion, in collaboration with one of our favourite vocalists—has clinched the top spot since 2022. They must be doing something right.

Like last year the Louder than War list is a very mixed bag of the good, to the average and to bad. From complete unknowns that you never knew even existed, to random choices of heritage artists well past their peak, artists you had forgotten or never knew released albums in 2024, a few decent choices and some predictable selections.

I look at this list and it certainly doesn't represent my 2024. I expect the list doesn't make any sense to anyone outside of the contributors of the list. A cultural cul-de-sac of odd choices restricted to the confines of Louder than War.

Everything on Aquarium Drunkard has been behind the paywall since they went subscriber only earlier this year. I know at least one great person and killer writer for them posts here, and I get surviving in this day and age is rough for all media, so I won't complain too much. BUT $10/month is A LOT and it really stings to not be able to read their yearly wrap up this year, because they are usually really excellent. Was kinda hoping they might put that one outside the paywall for a few weeks or something but, hey, I guess this subscriber only model is working out!

Thanks Bee. Yeah I was a fan since first hearing early songs on college radio in 81-82, though things changed when Disintegration came out -- I was 19 and was more into noise rock, death metal and such. I started listening again in the late 90s, finally saw them live, etc.

Looking forward to the Bleep, Phonica and Boomkat eoy charts. Do they usually get published this late?

BTW, I'm sorry I've been bad about keeping up here regularly. I find myself with less free time since the pandemic and moving to Rancho Bulboso in the middle of the woods, because I'm doing all the cooking/cleaning on top of job, and listen to YouTube music channels when I'm doing that (there's a list of my faves near the end of the summary page). If anyone here has channels or podcasts, please share!

Simply put, we've played it more than any other album this year - its magnificently swooning collection of earworms, melancholy hooks, and nostalgic references to so many formative records by Felt, HTRK, early The Verve, classic Les Disques Du Crépuscule, aspects of early The The, Enno Velthuys, and the most crushed Joanne Robertson & Dean Blunt jams - all fleetingly come to mind - but in the end it's just very much it's own, special thing.

The album has been sold out pretty much since the week it came out, but we've managed to get a special, limited haul of copies in celebration of it hitting our AOTY spot.

It comprises a blissful track from Japanese experimentalist Hakushi Hasegawa, a burst of blown-out fury from OsamaSon, a breathtaking seven-minute Urdu-Hindi epic by Sheherazaad, and an inescapable pop smash from Sabrina Carpenter. It's a neat encapsulation of this publication's genre-blurring ethos, an idea established a quarter of a century ago and carried forward today by the sharpest group of music journalists out there. A few years ago I took a deep dive into the rabbithole of current post-rock, and quickly overdosed. There’s so much of it, I can’t even comprehend how so many of them exist. And yet, bands like Japan’s MONO, who have been at it for a quarter century, have become kind of the gold standard. The albums have often exuded a Zen spirituality, which feels even more pronounced on Oath. This was underscored by their current triumphant 25th anniversary tour, where a 12 piece orchestra helped them sound more magisterial than ever. A recent show at Chicago’s Thalia Hall reportedly had dozens of hardened metalheads openly weeping. Drummer Dahm Majuri Cipolla a Breeders t-shirt in tribute to Steve Albini, who recorded the album.

These looks interesting! About 90% are unknown to me. And the ones I know I love already so I might end up discovering some new favorites in here. Also there’s some unexpected ones - as in I didn’t expect him to have a critically successful album in 2024 - like the LL COOL J which I keep seeing in other eoy lists.

LL is in my own top 5.

The Burning Ambulance lists invoke existential despair that music is too vast to ever absorb. Those are good lists. I thought I'd kept up with BA, but even though I have a list of 150 extreme metal albums, I'd missed The Crown, Wormed, Coffins and Vitriol, as did over a dozen metal YouTube channel countdowns.

My yearly collection playlist always has a name, and this year was obviously “2024 Sucks OK.” Which, obviously, it did. Every year sucks in its own way, but man, was 2024 a doozy. Disappointment, the realization that stasis of post-pandemic living, awful politics, genocides, unending wars. Your idols are dead and your enemies are in power. Everything feels too Weimar for its own good.

Still, there were good parts to the year, as there always are. Great books, great movies, some stellar albums. There were a lot of great records this year, actually. I could have done 200 for this entry if that weren’t such obvious overkill. I managed to know 40 entries on the Quietus’ year-end list. Usually I only know single digits – This despite listening to an average of 1100 albums a year.

Also I managed to get six short stories published this year, which is pretty good if you ask me.

Here are the 100 albums that best exemplify this year, this moment, this lifetime.
