I know you don't have any of that genre on here save Def Lep, but I find it interesting how well this aids my theory that it wasn't Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice, and Metallica that pushed hair/pop metal out of its prominent place in youth culture, they merely finished the job started by N.W.A, Digital Underground, and the poppier side of rap like Tone Loc, Young M.C., Rob Base etc. that took over the "You Be Illin'" lane when Run-D.M.C. moved into a harder direction on Tougher Than Leather (the first rap New Jersey!)

8 - Nag Nag Nag
8 - This Is Not My Post (and it'd be 9 if I still owned that Talking Heads album instead of a compilation)

This exercise has got me thinking about what I actually liked at the time. 1980 is right about when I started thinking about what I appealed to me in particular, rather than what records were around the house (Beatles, Chieftains) or what the radio was offering up.

To the best of my recollection, these would have been my Albums of the Year.

1980: Back in Black. I had been listening to hard rock radio for about a year, and it wasn't really clear what was new and what was old. It all rocked! This was heavily influenced by a slightly older cousin moving into our house who had a bunch of 8-tracks and always had the radio on.

1981: Face Dances. The Who quickly distinguished themselves in my radio listening, and around September, I found Face Dances in a cutout bin for like $3. The new Who album, for almost nothing! What a deal. About a month later, bought the Kids Are Alright soundtrack, confident that I now had all the records I'd ever need from The Who. By the time It's Hard came out, I'd bought most of the rest, my first real binge.

1982: Broadsword and the Beast. Concurrent with acquiring Who records, borrowing Aqualung from the local library made Jethro Tull my second favorite band. My cousin got this for me as a gift. Excellent music to play Dungeons and Dragons to.

1983: War. Hey, maybe new wave isn't sucky. Over the previous year I started turning the dial from the Worcester MA hard rock station more to WBCN in Boston, which had a more diverse definition of rock, including bands formed after 1980. U2 conquered Massachusetts early on, helped in large part by Irish-American sentimentality, which was not absent in my homelife either. I made a cassette from my friend's copy and bought Boy, which was even better.

1984: Zen Arcade. Strange to think I started 1983 with Minstrel in the Gallery in my steady rotation and 18 months later, Zen Arcade. Angst had replaced epics, and the gaming ceased pretty quickly in favor of getting a ride to the commuter rail to get the subway into Harvard Square to get the stuff you couldn't in the hinterlands.

1985: New Day Rising. I don't think a record has ever soundtracked my year as completely as this one for my 17th year. I don't rate it as highly as Zen Arcade now, and there's plenty of records I like more from these years. But Husker Du definitely revealed to me there was no upper-limit to the amount of noise that could make music interesting. I did kinda bail quickly on them, as Flip Your Wig was disappointingly free of a track that bludgeoned like "Plans I Make."

1986: EVOL. Even more fuzzy, now without tuning or passible singing. Sexy rather than purely angry, as befitted escaping high school.

1987: Electric. Totally dominated my social circles that year, we were all very happy to get back to Back in Black. Love was A-minus goth, but Electric was this great permission slip to resume enjoying music that wasn't all darkness and was dumb. Total sugar buzz this record, don't think I've listened to the whole thing in decades. I've got an extra gold picture disc copy too, as I was beginning to think records might be valuable in the future. Not that one though. I think of Electric as conjoined with Licensed to Ill.

1988: Tender Prey. By this point, I was a creative writing major.

1989: Doolittle. I'd seen them open for the Throwing Muses in '86 and the crowd went nuts and I thought they were a sub-par cowpunk band, and wasn't sure what the fuss was. They closed with the Eraserhead song and that did tickle my hipster fancy. Surfer Rosa was good enough that I got Doolittle the day it came out, and was shocked at how complete their whole sound was, Beatles hooks, Who/U2 anthems, Nick Cave sinisterness, SST racket. My whole eighties on one record. I alternate years liking these records and being very tired of them and their impact.

Yeah 3 of my 10 were Mpls bar band favorites and I was so excited when they released vinyl. I recently dug out Take It for the first time in a long time and I kinda wish the production was different (sorry Allen Toussaint) but it still totally defines my mid 1980s.

By far and away my least favorite decade of popular music. In fact, in my collection I've noticed the 80's, especially 84-89, contain the fewest records of any year in my collection going back to 1967.

1980 Talking Heads - Remain in Light
1981 Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

Sorry - accidentally posting while I was still drafting that... Hadn't properly decided on some years yet and thought to avoid repeats of artists.
1985 was strangely difficult for me - there were several pretty good albums there, but none of which I thought 'this should be it!', while most other years had several albums I really, really love.

I'll decide on this list for now:

1981 Rush - Moving Pictures
1982 Duran Duran - Rio
1983 The Stranglers - Feline

sleeve, Tuesday, 28 January 2025 18:55 (four months ago)

I worked in a record store 1981-82. I don’t recall Asia being a particularly big seller but boy did we move truckloads of Hi Infidelity.

Listening to all of these albums together, the individuality that emerged in the 80s is really staggering considering its reputation as the decade of conformity. I used to think monoculture ended with the internet around 2000, but you can really hear it already happening in this collection of songs.

bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Tuesday, 28 January 2025 21:19 (four months ago)

Monoculture doesn't mean, though, that Slayer and David Sylvian would have sounded the same; it means that almost anyone around at the time knew half-a-dozen songs apiece from the Billboard top sellers list above.

...even if they never bought the records.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 28 January 2025 21:34 (four months ago)

I just mean that avenues for more individualized tastes were starting to open up compared to what existed in the '60s and '70s. I don’t know—this decade feels like ground zero for when identity, subculture, and music really began to intertwine.

bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Tuesday, 28 January 2025 21:41 (four months ago)

I'm sure you could poke holes in that theory, but it just struck me when listening.

bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Tuesday, 28 January 2025 21:42 (four months ago)

Yes, certainly different sounds, genres and entire approaches were proliferating.

That billboard list has, I think, zero overlap with any posted lists.

I think at least The Wall would have made some had that not been released in 1979.

given how much I like most of the other albums there I think I'd better listen to the Method Actors

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 29 January 2025 15:29 (three months ago)

Love this thread and want more, but a 70's or 90's version is going to be impossible.

octobeard, Thursday, 30 January 2025 02:49 (three months ago)

XP: Woo! Swell Maps! And ditto re Method Actors.

I was actually mocked (lightheartedly lol) off-ILX for my hasty selections, but that seemingly brings it to just three which haven't appeared in subsequent posts. Bless you all.

remain in light - a top 10 all time album for me
playing with a different sex
hex enduction - i don't listen to this one as much as dragnet/grotesque/slates but it's probably the best
bad seed / mutiny, or if that doesn't count, ken dou werente by orchestre baobab, my favorite non-fela african record
hatful of hollow - this was so huge for me as a teen. still is.
fear and whiskey
throwing muses - a top 10 all time album as well
happy nightmare baby
critical beatdown - it's not better than 3 feet high or paul's boutique, but still a really great 80s hip hop record that you can put on and enjoy almost all of
doolittle - i do listen to this way more than 3 feet high or paul's boutique. oh well.

seems like for each decade there's a half i am really into (late 50s, late 60s, late 70s, early 80s, early 90s, late 2000s, early 2010s) and the other half it's much harder for me to find good stuff (except maybe the early 70s that's still pretty good). 87 and 88 were kind of hard for me to nail down for this exercise in music nerdery.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Thursday, 30 January 2025 09:28 (three months ago)
