Hello everyone, welcome back to the ILM top 77 EOY poll! The only EOY poll that matters.
We received 66 tracks ballots and 72 album ballots this year. Thanks to everyone who voted!
Your pollrunners are once again Seandalai on poll organization and vote tabulation and myself running the poll results thread and graphics.
Special thanks to tipsy mothra and Nag! Nag! Nag! for helping out with the nominations playlists this year. It's one of the most time-consuming tasks each year and I didn't have enough time to pull them off this year. It was immensely helpful of you both to do them. Thank you.
Here's the playlist that I'll be updating with the tracks results:

If anyone wants to build a matching YouTube / Tidal / Apple Music / Amazon Music - please share it. I'd like to request the mods if said playlists are shared please be so kind to add them to this opening post for visibility.
Same drill as last year, we'll do tracks this week, albums next. Poll starts at around 8am EST tomorrow... so 11 hours from now. See you soon.

Last year we had 71 voter's for tracks and 73 for albums.
Hopefully seandalai shares that graph with all the years stats too.

James K - Blinkmoth (July Mix) 114 points - 5 votesVideoThis year, no artist has made downtempo more appealing than New York producer James K, whose breathy, lilting vocals have floated across some of 2024’s best music. It makes sense that amid sustained geo-political violence and economic turbulence, we’d again find solace in shoegaze—music that slows the anxious heart while holding a mirror to deep-rooted angst we prefer to leave unspoken.“Blinkmoth (July Mix)” commanded repeat listens this year for an instantaneous pull that sucks you into the muted vortex of James K’s romantic solitude. As she sings about the endless transference of love, a trip-hop beat glides and gallops, tactfully situating us in the ‘90s. But really, it’s the heavenly vocals that we’re here for. Her delivery glistens with the Elizabeth Fraser effect: carried foremost by feeling, the curvature of her indecipherable lyrics capture the fleeting moment in which euphoria sinks into quiet melancholy. Additions like this to the electronic shoegaze revival should give any non-believer proof of its enduring relevance.

The Cure - Alone 114 points - 5 votesVideoThe synths coast alongside the guitars like fighter jets leading a passenger jet to a runway, while the drums pound their irregular patterns. The slow opening crawl — how Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me of them. “This is the end of every song we’ll sing,” Robert Smith lies. Not so long as he can thatch his hair, apply moist lipstick, keep his global audience, and keep writing and singing songs this confidently.

https://i.imgur.com/7Z1XiDH.png76. Camila Cabello - I Luv It 116 points- 4 votesVideo“I Luv It” is a perfect example of once avant-garde sounds being absorbed into the mainstream — which is why people hate it — but the way all involved fail makes it much better than it otherwise would be. Everyone involved doesn’t know how to work outside the lines of pure pop, and it shows. We have a IV-I-V-ii chord progression, normally too melancholic for upbeat electronica outside of “Off-World”, and we have a classic AABB chorus, only the AAs are iluvitiluvitiluvitiluvit and the BBs are Gucci Mane samples. Cabello is much more fun in this mode than crooning nicotine-Halloween-morphine “Never Be The Same” mode, and if she still comes across as try-hard, that adds to the song’s bizarre alchemy. Carti’s dispassionate mumbling nearly kills it, but listen to the beautiful synth arpeggio he’s up against. “I Luv It” is too structured to be incoherent, too clean to be overwhelming, and all those contradictions make the song legitimately captivating, far from the trainwreck intended.

Their last solo record, 2021’s Blue Alibi, was a spiky, lo-fi grunge affair, while their score for Jonathan Glazer’s 2023 chilling film The Zone of Interest unleashed nightmares through experimental found sound. This summer, Levi once again opted for unpredictability with their Hyperdub debut, the 12-minute dream pop epic hypnotically circles around a loop of undulating synths, a rumbling bass hum and an assertive, locked-in beat. Occasionally, the transcendental melody is interrupted by a slight key change or the growing swell of indecipherable voices, but it’s never enough to unseat the song’s steady, meditative pace. “slob air” is like watching the sun rise on the top deck of the bus after a bleary night out—life-affirming. https://ra.co/features/4401

https://i.imgur.com/pGWTxnJ.png74. RYUGUJO - Deep Wave 123 points - 4 votesVideoDeep Wave‘s biggest charms occur before and after that disorienting slowdown. The beat here goes off, ornamenting its house influences with rhythm guitar and a festival-like atmosphere that grows bigger and bolder as the track continues. The rap verses are as thrilling and catchy as the repeated melody, delivered with impish charisma that chews on the groove with relish. The transition back into the beat, just after the two minute mark, is one of my favorite musical moments this year. Then, apocalyptic sirens enter the mix to give the track an otherworldly tension. Deep Wave is very ‘push and pull’ all the way through, piercing its straightforward moments with left turns that keep your ear constantly off guard. It’s this blend of brilliant pop sensibilities and surreal exploration that makes the song so compelling.

Vanishing Twin - Life Drummer 124 points - 5 votesVideoWhile we remain engrained in the world built on Vanishing Twin’s Afternoon X, released last October, the London based trio return with Life Drummer, their illustrious entry into this year’s Sub Pop Singles Club. The experimental pop band has been transforming post-punk, kosmische, and discombobulated dream-pop with ingenious results for the better part of the last decade, and their new single remains as explorative as ever, comprised of three songs that glide and contort between glitchy minimalism and effervescent lounge rock displacement. “Life Drummer” revolves around a sinewy beat from Valentina Magaletti, adorned with patchwork samples and a serene split between alien melodies and stark mechanical pulse as hypnotic as it is fluid.

On the strength of last year’s iPlan, a mostly instrumental piece driven by percussion and tapestry-like pitched notes, Dlala Thukzin returns with Zee Nxumalo and together they hammer in their first hit.The long version offers a unique integration of Amapiano tropes in an overall Gqom structure. Subdued synth layers, piping jazzy flourishes, soulful guitar strings accompany Zee’s entrance with a sea-rolling House beat reminiscent of last year’s hit Osama by Zakes Bantwini. Her unique slightly nasal vocals steal the show. Gently aligned on the instrumental elements through repeated lyrics, she seems to emerge from the background, before her motifs are suddenly elevated and carried fluidly into the chorus: Mama shiya shiya, namhlanje ang’shintshi ang’shintshi. Ay shintsha amagear. Namhlanje mama thina sizo giya ey yeah ya. The rest is flawless mechanical groove, a long ride with melancholic tones, and a last big oomph when the DJs say their only words to propel the wave once more. - Nabozohttps://rateyourmusic.com/release/single/dlala-thukzin-funky-qla-zee-nxumalo/ama-gear

Saweetie - Proclivities 126 points - 5 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoPairing the still musclebound MC responsible for sexy classics like “Doin’ It” with the producer of A Tribe Called Quest come-ons like “Electric Relaxation” seems almost too on the nose. And yes, in 2024, LL is a long-married grandpa. But we hardly even need to suspend our disbelief as he twists seductive rhymes around a synth line recalling Gary Numan on “Proclivities,” flirting with Saweetie about tonsil hockey and making panties drop.

The Tubs - Freak Mode 127 points - 4 votesVideoCotton Crown Centres around life in the period following the suicide of his mother (the folk singer Charlotte Greig.), Williams sings of the clumsy, intrusive, and well-meaning social interactions that follow. Lead single “Freak Mode,” according to Williams, was written “about dating while grieving the death of my mother. It’s about making wacky tragicomic romantic assumptions and being an emotional freak, but also kind of being self aware about that and explaining it to whoever you’re shagging.”

catching up
"slob air" - fully support everything that mica levi does, and i appreciate what she's doing here. a good mix between her soundtrack and pop modes
"deep wave" - the longest 3.5 minutes of my life. respect the audacity of the dozen songs in one approach, and there are good bits (the 6/8 bit in the middle and the part around 1:45 where the synths come in), but overall it's just exhausting
"life drummer" - didn't realize that they released a new album in 2024. song title is appropriate, valentina's drumming is the main attraction.
"ama gear" - listened to way less african music in 2024 than years past, so i missed this. love its gentle swell, and interplay between the piano and guitar way down in the mix
"proclivities" - love to see ll back in loverman mode, and q-tip is on point like he is all the time. saweetie is a nothing rapper, but i like the way her voice sounds against tip's bounce.
"freak mode" - loved the tubs 2023 album, but when i saw this came out, i mentally said "nice!" and then forgot about it. it's taut, jangly, and playful like all my tubs favorites. don't think it stands up to the highs from dead meat but i still dig the formula

The Cure - A Fragile Thing 128 points - 4 votesVideoWith Robert Smith’s trembling voice at the helm, the track unspools slowly, like settling mist over a forgotten lake. Guitars swirl, building a brooding tension, while a deep piano murmurs beneath. The bittersweet sorrow of A Fragile Thing pulses with the ache of loss, a darkness deepened by Robert Smith’s grief over the passing of his parents and brother. That weight of mourning seeps into every note, a whispered lament that tugs at the corners of the soul. It’s a delicate dirge, where Smith’s ethereal, ghostly vocals drift through shadows of sadness and remembrance.

https://i.imgur.com/OABoL90.pngTIE 67. Tems - Love Me JeJe 130 points - 5 votesVideoEvery Tems single this decade has been a little masterpiece; this is no different. But it is different — this is the most comfortable she’s sounded on record, her performance filled with the little grace notes and playful asides that only come when a singer is in their element. “Damages” and the other singles off For Broken Ears were beautiful showcases for Tems’ voice, but she largely stuck to grand gestures, melodies that spread across the sonic canvas like she was singing arias, gorgeous and lonely. “Love Me JeJe” feels tender in a way that her music never has, a warm and lovely party of a song — nostalgic not just in its invocation of Seyi Sodimu but in its whole feel, those call-and-response vocals and that “Heartbeats”-esque guitar riff invoking an endless succession of warm summer nights. Every note feels like an invitation to the sublime; even just in the way she subtly adjusts the emphasis the last time she calls to her lover, turning a note of devotion into something more flirtatious. The best pop songs we write about here are the ones that are worlds in themselves, self-sustaining systems of sound that seem to unfold further and reveal more to love about them with every listen. “Love Me JeJe” is one of those worlds.https://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/tems-love-me-jeje/

a fragile thing is extremely catchy. the phrasing of the vocals is addictive, the way the rushed rhythm of them leads into the melancholic lilt of the repeated line, "she said," is pleasing

The Cure are one of these bands I wish I enjoyed more. 'Alone' just drags for me. As with a lot of their music I find it a bit plod-some and the atmospherics feel very surface-level. I'll have to give the album a go and see if it clicks because, as I say, so many people I know love them to bits

is "love me jeje" so low because people vote split with "burning" or something?
― ufo, Tuesday, 28 January 2025 17:38 (three weeks ago) link
For starters, the song is structured off of six-bar phrases rather than four-bar phrases, which makes the melodic theme go on longer than we are conditioned to think it should due to the traditional four-bar phrases rather than used in every current popular music genre you can think of. On top of this, Robert piggybacks the rhyme scheme into an extension where the traditional ending point for the rhyme is embedded inside an extra couplet that adds an additional rhyme and finishes the extended phrase. All of this feeds into the text of the song, about an unstable relationship that the participants feel has gone on for too long, with the phrases overreaching what our ears expect, reinforcing the lyrical assertion that the love in question is a fragile thing. It’s absolutely fucking brilliant, dialed in on pretty much every level.

Doechii - Nissan Altima 130 points - 5 votesVideoYou know, we’ve had such a rough streak of terrible fast raps from Eminem and Eminem wannabes lately that it’s easy to forget how fun fast raps can be when it’s done well. Doechii immediately jumps in with this roller-coaster flow in the first verse after the chorus that’s so infectious that if the song was just that verse and two choruses I would have been satisfied. But the second verse is just as good! Doechii is such a firespitter and some of her pop concessions make me forget that sometimes. Glad to have a song where she truly proves herself and reminds us she can and will take over the rap game when the time is right.https://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/doechii-nissan-altima/

Because that’s exactly the kind of wild party Kesha’s conjuring here, silly and fun and insanely catchy. Initially I was a little over the “I am Mother” line, thinking, “that will date this all to hell,” but maybe this one should absolutely be dated. July 2024: the first month Kesha released new music unshackled from Dr. Luke. The sense of freedom and excitement here is so palpable; Kesha’s clearly having a ball on the recording, hamming up her performance in a way that’s simultaneously goofy and sexy. (The only other singer I can see delivering “beep-beep bitch” this well is Gaga, the established queen of camp.) I’m excited to see where newly-freed Kesha goes next, as she’s bound to show us the best night of our lives.

Little Simz - Mood Swings 132 points - 5 votesVideoAfter three stately albums produced by longtime collaborator (and SAULT band leader) Inflo, this time Simz recruits British producer Jakwob to create sounds that pulse and jump with a funky digital spark. On opener “Mood Swings,” one of the more aggro songs, Simz darts between Jakwob’s synth plucks and drum hits while interpolating Solange’s “Binz.” But just as quickly, they dip into dance-friendly rhythms that Simz rides with the steadiness of an EKG machine.

https://i.imgur.com/42Iv87M.png63. Tove Lo & SG Lewis - HEAT 136 points - 4 votesVideoThe concept of “Heat” is simple. Tove Lo exerts her power and dominance in under four minutes. While she enjoys the attention she’s getting, whoever is trying to come onto her can’t keep up and can’t have her. It’s incredibly repetitive, lyrically and musically, but I’m not bothered simply because of how Lo draws emphasis to her rhymes, repetition and assonance. The 12-word line “Want my body, but my body’s got too lush for your stuff” throws repetition, rhyme and assonance at the listener all at once. SG Lewis’ production sticks to this more minimalist theme but still sounds big, bright and polished. His rhythmic synths sound like something that would be played during a fashion show, but it isn’t cheesy. There are layers. After 15 seconds of the repetitive synth riff that’s in the foreground to begin the track, there’s a string synthesizer that bubbles underneath and then soars right before Lo begins with her vocals. The more percussive beats are simple and meant not to overshadow the main synth melody. Across the song, especially in the single verse and the final breakdown, Lewis allows a groovy and squishy bass to get its moment in the spotlight. “Heat” and its accompanying EP were released just a week after Charli XCX’s Brat, the bigger and much more mainstream club record. This draws a contrast. “Heat is” smoother but not boring. It’s danceable, liberating, and chill. It’s devoid of chaos.

Mabe Fratti - Enfrente 136 points - 5 votesVideo“There’s a sensation of fear of being heard in the intention of the song, and being one step behind everything that’s going on, and feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to follow up.” Fratti and her partner Héctor Tosta refer to “Enfrente” as “the ‘spoiled’ kid of the record” because it started one way and completely transformed as they worked on it. This can be heard in the final product which utilises a variety of different approaches to create a startling and towering whole. It starts with a metallic loop that forms an aching spine, with sighing strings, Fratti’s signature cello and an insistent beat pushing it onwards. Fratti is confrontational in her soft-spoken voice “Vas disimulado / Dices que estás cantando / Subes temblando al podio” (“You are hiding / You say you’re singing / You tremble your way up to the podium”). Splashes of crystal synths zap through the atmosphere and piano chords ripple like shivers of ice down the back. As the song lurches to what seems its finale a breakbeat bursts through, carrying “Enfrente” to a new realm – the sound of fear being overcome, of satisfaction being earned.

Extremely pleased OZEBA made the cut. Put it fairly high up on my ballot. Stuff like Tems' vaporous r'n'b vibes do little for me, so it was great to hear Rema trying something new and injecting Afrobeats with extra raw energy. It comes in spades. He hasn't sounded this energetic since 'Bounce', but there's an unhinged viciousness and a sense of humour here which he's very good at but rarely displays.

Always a treat to wake up to the rollout! Voted for the RYUGUJO (thanks emil.y), Vanishing Twin (big hopes for two other Valentina Magaletti projects in the albums poll), LL Cool J and Tems. I had "Double Moon" at #8 on my 2023 ballot so didn't run it back, and not sure how I missed "Ama Gear" considering I was the sole (& #1!) voter for "iPlan" that year too. Love the Mabe Fratti - just realised I was juggling her between my tracks and albums ballot and, uh, forgot to put her back on. Didn't vote for the Tubs track but looking forward to the album - was a shock to discover Owen Williams' mother was music journalist/novelist (as well as folk singer) Charlotte Greig; have a copy of her book on girl-groups as well as Night Visiting Songs.

James K - Blinkmoth (July Mix): Gorgeous track, this hit hard and is probably my favorite find on the list today. I also enjoyed James K's feature on that Priori album from '23 (side note, Priori's 2024 album is even better and I think made my ballot or was a close to doing so) but the vocals and track were good, nothing memorable. This surely is. I noticed another single of hers in a similar style, Hypersoft Lovejinx Junkdream. Is an album coming? I hope so.
Dlala Thukzin, Funky Qla & Zee Nxumalo - Ama Gear: I really love this, also haven't listened to as much SA house/amapiano style stuff this year and this scratches that itch big time. Love the textural effect the words impart in the mix on the chorus.
LL Cool J ft. Saweetie - Proclivities: WTF yes, this has no right being as good as it is. Is the rest of his album on this level? Alfred was this the album you were referring to above?
Magdalena Bay - Image: I actually enjoyed the goofiness of the video, but yes, this reeks of 2012. But hey, I'm here for it and will watch it in a playlist of similar style videos after hitting a fat doob in the future I'm sure.
Mabe Fratti - Enfrente: How did I miss this album this year? brb going to listen to it today.
Mood Swings was my only track to place so far. Good stuff this year.

Very much approve James K, Proclivities, Life Drummer, Doechii, Ama Gear, Ozeba, Mabe Fratti. I feel quite aligned with the first day. Also not sure what people see in Magdalena Bay anymore, although "psychedelic woosh" sounds about right. Feels to me like she's highlighting all the wrong things: saturated, stocky, vapid, loungy synthpop driven by the 80s sound and not particularly well written, every song feels like it's 5 minutes and a chore to get through. Maybe she was never for me, but I thought I had a moderate appreciation for the first album. And I liked the Cure album but I sure hope they don't place all eight in the tracks poll.
― Nabozo, Wednesday, 29 January 2025 10:08 (three weeks ago) link
Proclivities is maybe the biggest disparity between quality of production and quality of lyrics in any hip-hop song I've ever heard. Q-Tip deserves his spot

Didn't vote for anything that placed yesterday, but I did vote for the Rema-album. If people like Ozeba they need to check the album out, it's 11 songs as crazy as that one, none of which hit the 3 minute mark. An absolute blast.

i tried to stan for HE KNOWS from the camilla cabello album, which i like a lot better, to no effect haha. it has a 30 second lil nas x verse about boys fucking each other that is wayyy better than it should be and it's just a more pleasant song overall imo.

Jane Remover - Magic I Want U 137 points - 6 votesVideoJane Remover was a couple years ahead of the recent wave of “internet artists” reaching back into the tactile world, approaching guitar music with a producer’s instinct. On the euphoric “Magic I Want U”, she transcends past niches (glitchy emo, fuzzy shoegaze, freaky mash-ups) and simply gives us a hit. Here it feels like sleight of hand the way sludgy guitar, skittering breakbeats, echoes of Miami bass and the odd Trapaholics drop combine to feel timeless and weightless. Are the things that happen in your phone as real as the “real world?” If you’ve been stricken by obsession with someone far away, you know the answer. With crush psychosis as her muse, Jane falls headfirst into dreams: She wants to be your missing piece, your thinkpiece, your groupie. (No, not you. You.) It’s electric when they’re near, but the magic’s in the absence. “I build a world from every vision,” she yelps from her bedroom, sending out a message through the ether: “Can you feel that?”

The Cure - Endsong 141 points - 4 votes - 1 º1 voteVideo"Endsong" is one of two song titles on Lost World, along with “Warsong,” that instantly bring to mind “Plainsong” and “Lovesong” from Disintegration, the latter being the Cure’s biggest American chart hit that reached No. 2 on the Hot 100. With a running time of over 10 minutes, “Endsong” is the second-longest studio track in the Cure catalog, bested only by the 11-minute “Watching Me Fall” from 2000’s Bloodflowers. A tambourine and drum machine hand claps give “Endsong” a more polyrhythmic churn than the rest of the album, as the track slowly builds up to Smith’s vocal, which arrives more than six minutes into the song.“Endsong” certainly feels like it could be a curtain call for the Cure’s entire career, but that’s not Smith’s plan. In his interview to promote the album, Smith revealed that the band is working on two more new albums, one of which is “virtually finished."

The synths are scribbly and cosmic simultaneously, and the often lackadaisical vibes of previous releases has been replaced by a maniacal aplomb. There are some shouty bits, as is the current trend, but they’re tempered by that uniquely SM tunefulness. and backed up by the controlled and well-tuned performances. Two of our most familiar and beloved SM-associated songwriters are involved — Kenzie and Dem Jointz — along with Paris Alexa, who as far as I can tell has her first K-pop production credit here. I would strongly encourage the powers that be at SM to keep working with her!

Here she wields that quality to brilliant effect, establishing a calm, self-assured demeanor before breaking into a chorus of heavy guitar fuzz and sudden lyrical vulnerability. The playful character of the first verse (“I can never lose, it’s a state of mind”) is hard to find in the driving, noisy chorus—the pretense has evaporated, leaving someone craving reassurance, scared to lose their partner (“the minute I’m not in control, I’m tearing up inside”). “Like I Say (I runaway)” is Yanya at her best, irresistibly catchy and quietly haunting.

All power to Cure fans at ILM HQ but I listened to the album yesterday and apart from Drone:Nodrone, most of the songs sounded indistinguishable to me: Slow wet kick + snare drum pattern, extended 2min+ intro based on keys/bass/guitar jamming around a simple four-chord structure, then Rob comes in and does his thing and it goes on for a bit before ending... I guess it's kind of a vibe, and I'll come back to it but apart from The Cure's more obviosuly "pop" numbers, it's always been my thing that there's not enough for me to latch onto whenever I've tried to listen to a whole album.

NewJeans - How Sweet 143 points - 6 votesVideoA very NewJeansian take on the break up-come down song; it’s a harder feeling to make sound giddy, but they pull it off here. The fragments jutting out from the sing-talk (“like biting an apple”; “no drama, it’s good karma”; “little demon in my storyline“ most of all) are thrilling and deranged, the kind of phrases that become involuntary mantras and mutterings when you make your way out of something all-consuming and are faced with the shock of the new. Most of the writing about NewJeans centers on their musical trappings, but the Miami bass riffs here are more perfunctory than their prior dalliances with drum-n-bass and Jersey club. That’s not to say that it’s a bad song — that bassline itself, rubbery and grooving, is gorgeous — but that it shares less with the perfect grooves that “OMG” and “Ditto” than first appears.

As much as I love NewJeans presence on these polls the past few years (and voted for this one), I'm very happy to see Aespa place with what is perhaps more "trve kvlt" kpop - angular, hard, composed by one of the grand dames responsible for decades of kpop hits, Kenzie.

Magdalena Bay - Death and Romance 144 points - 4 votesVideoAn alt-pop-meets-prog-rock anthem conveyed with all the gut-wrenching drama that the present moment demands. Proclamatory piano kicks things off, then drums bounce in with Tenenbaum’s crystalline vocals. “Are we too late? Are we too far?” she implores, a sentiment that’s crossed my mind more than once this year when thinking of our species’ existential crisis. Sometimes, though, sheer determination is all you have, and Tenenbaum’s delivery is achingly passionate as she assures us: “My hands, your hands / I’ll hold forever / No way I’ll break hold / No, not ever.” Tenenbaum and Lewin are masters of tension here, pulling back the instrumentation to just vocals, piano and washy ocean sounds on the bridge, then letting it all crash gloriously back in, swelling to create a euphoric, cathartic wave of sound. I’m not naive enough to suggest that a song could solve our problems, but the unadulterated joy contained in “Death & Romance” can give us a moment of respite and inspiration. After all, as Tenenbaum tells us: “I give and you give ’til it’s all that we have / You know nothing is fair in death and romance.”

"endsong": i like that the cure made a whole album of epic closing songs and still saved the most epic for last
"supernova": good to know south korea also had a brat summer
"like i say (runaway)": while the guys from radiohead made two noodling albums with some cuts but mostly middling results, nilufer's album was the one i returned to when i wanted that intricate, rhythmic, in rainbows-style guitar latticework (from an album i hadn't heard a billion times). as alfred said, this is probably the album's most tuneful cut. "mutations" was my fav, and a late cut from my ballot.
"bezodnya": i am pretty sure i can create this synth sound on my roland (complimentary)
"how sweet": "ditto" and "super shy" clear, but digging the airy miami bass vibes. kinda makes me wish that ilm paid any attention to the r&b trio flo at all this year
"death & romance": already spoke on mag bay earlier, and i'm heartened that the album will place high. "cry for me" was my personal fav from the album, but "death & romance" is great too. there's some yacht rock (or maybe chillwave?) in that repeating piano pattern
"apt.": reminds me of that jessie j "bang bang" song that i had blissfully forgotten about until now

Two things about APT:
1) I learned a bit Korean for work last year, and was amused that the korean word for 'apartment' really is 아파트, that is 'apateu', as if they were just saying the abbreviation. Which I guess is what it is?
2) This was my son's favorite song for a while, so we heard it dozens of times in a row. It held up quite well to that, so I had to vote for it.
3) APATEU APATEU

https://i.imgur.com/NZSmKgc.pngTIE 50. Kaeto - DISTANCE 144 points - 5 votesVideo“When I was writing this song I felt so lost and unloved. I was having so many unsuccessful and fleeting exchanges and I was attracting the wrong type of person into my life. Most commonly I would know that the person did not want me sincerely and yet I would struggle to shake a compulsion to change myself into a shape that might change their mind, misplacing a lot of love for myself in the process. The challenge that this lack of reciprocity creates has an addictive quality that I found wasn’t good for my soul. So with this song I am trying to explore my own relationship with those bread crumbs of love and affection that steered my sense of self- worth so off road. Where I have landed: someone’s feelings are entirely separate from you, and you aren’t the reason someone loves or doesn’t love. We are all just humans and sometimes things don’t work.”

Mk.gee - Alesis 147 points - 5 votesOn “Alesis,” Michael Gordon, the 28-year-old songwriter and performer known as Mk.gee, sounds like he’s in the thick of an identity crisis. “I’m in another body who’s in somebody else,” he says. And later, “Why bleed when we don’t have to?” It sounds undeniably dour when you consider the year Gordon’s had, having morphed from niche indie artist and Dijon collaborator to SNL performer and music journo-approved “Guitar God,” praised by the likes of John Mayer and Eric Clapton (the latter of whom called him a “young Prince”). That alliterative term may have lost its luster back in the Reagan administration, but its resurrection feels fitting here. It’s not just that Gordon nails the look (long, scraggly hair), cockiness (he’s called his album Two Star & the Dream Police “perfect”), or — especially with “Alesis” — the ability to create a classic top-line melody (he’s currently working on music with Justin Bieber). It’s that he can make his instrument sound like anything — a warble, a flood, a person speaking. On “Alesis” it’s as gnarly as a buzzsaw and as fuzzy felt. It’s the only song this year that feels like a trust fall.

Underworld - denver luna 150 points - 5 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoBuilt around a driving electro pulse, “denver luna” primarily serves as a vehicle for a compelling performance by vocalist Karl Hyde, delivering stream-of-consciousness lyrics ripe with alliteration, sibilance, and imaginative rhymes. As the tune progresses, layers of his voice surmount, building a wall of harmonic movement, all while the steady kick drum keeps things moving. The full version of “denver luna” arrives one month after Underworld shared an acapella rendition of the tune, which shined a light on the intricate composition and processing of Hyde’s vocals. Now, on the full version, the breadth of the dynamics has expanded, with shimmering hi-hats and the anchoring bottom end elevating the climaxes to a stirring level of danciness.

https://i.imgur.com/wvZpCdg.png47. ILLIT - Magnetic 152 points - 5 votesVideoIt’s 2024, of course the single picked from their EP picked is the song with the most candied music-box elements. The song isn’t as fully committed to replicating that sound as the tentative spoken word intro suggests, which means its sweetness is diluted, but the other elements in the mixture work with it. The bass stomping forward and the 2010s stuttered “you you you”s are a great alternative, and the 16-bit swoops and pops tie it all together with a fizz.

Otoma de Haba is her most startling track so far, incorporating acid house synth lines and somewhat frantic polyrhythms with Florence’s lovely voice floating on top of it all. -NickB

Clairo’s somehow boasting and retreating at the same time / she’s thirsting and demurring / she’s dancing the sexy kind of shuffle that Belle & Sebastian once perfected - only instead of strum and fumble this is pulse and pose, a layering of chamber sounds that leads like a carpet from the front door to the bed.

The singer’s delivery is just nimble and tossed-off enough—even when she’s overtly clapping back at her critics during a spoken bridge—to make it all seem easy.

Chappell Roan - Hot to Go 162 points - 7 votesVideoOf all the guises that Chappell Roan inhabited on her debut album, this always felt like the truest — she sounds like Devo if they slayed, still gawking and midwestern and not quite fitting a perfect archetype of pop stardom but still, nevertheless, a star. The weepy ballads (some of them great) fade away in the face of this, the goofy chant-a-longs and dance instructions wearing one’s resistance down on the strength of pure charisma and craft. There are hooks upon hooks here — I think I’ve had just the synth chord on the prechorus stuck in my head before.

Billie Eilish - LUNCH 162 points - 7 votesVideoA contradiction underlying Billie Eilish’s work has been the way the insularity of her affect — her high and wispy vocal encased in bedroom production steered by brother Finneas — has built pop music that is so outré: hers is big music made in small ways. That’s particularly notable with her ballads, which are robust in their frailty, but it’s true too of her more upbeat singles too. “Lunch” is notable, even more than its palpable rather than revelatory queerness, for being Eilish’s biggest banger since “Bad Guy,” which was also driven by a thick bassline more commanding than its gothy setting might have been expected to tolerate. Add a nearly bumptious drum machine and spy-guitar accents, and “Lunch” turns out to be an update on 2000s dance-punk, albeit with the lights turned low. It’s good for unexpectedly bold flirtations at the discotheque, though perhaps ones made while still avoiding eye contact.

i think the point about magdalena bay is that their hype is somewhat inflated within their market. they are from miami and then l.a. but aren't really known in america (or the uk). the reason your average joe blow doesn't hear any kpop or jpop is because they probably aren't japanese or korean. but crucially that doesn't keep them from granting their videos an honorable mention for creative ideas.

i think occasional discussion has mostly been in the hypergarbage thread, though i somehow missed her run of singles this year until pretty late. i'm very excited for her upcoming albums but apparently none of last year's singles are on revengeseekerz and she scrapped the 'pop' album those were going to be on? but "jrjrjr" rules so i'm not worried

"bezodnya" is underwhelming, there's not really much to it except the synth sound
i agree with whoever said "death & romance" is one of the weaker tracks on the magdalena bay album
"apt." has a catchy chorus but it's pretty bland overall, i'll easily take any of the other kpop tracks from today over it
"distance" is pretty nice, i like the layered build
"otoma de naba" rules, my favourite discovery so far. it's a bit meandering at first but it all comes together about halfway through, love the polyrhythms

Fabiana Palladino - Stay with me through the night 163 points - 7 votesVideoWhat makes (the album) Fabiana Palladino such a triumph is that its huge scope and delicate touch are deployed not as ends unto themselves but as tools for thematic poignancy and tonal highlighting. “Stay With Me Through The Night” is the strongest example of this, where the classy piano chords stand proudly and prominently alongside funky bass plunks. It’s impressive how she navigates the retro color grading of funk without being redundant or solely derivative of stronger records of the past. It helps that Fabiana is such an elegant performer. Her voice is deeply intimate here, like whispers in the ear on the dancefloor. As much as she tosses and turns in uncertainty throughout the lyrics, she’s firm and assertive as a singer — so magnetic that her request for “one more try,” her pleading for you to stay, feels ultimately rhetorical. It’d be foolish not to stay.

A dreamy, Eighties-indebted synth hook mingles with her own hushed recollections: “I was in a sheer dress the day that we met/ We were both in a rush, we talked for a sec.” It’s unapologetically horny, describing her fantasy in detail and delivering the stick-it-on-a-T-shirt gem: “Come ride on me, I mean, camaraderie/ Said you’re not in my time zone but you wanna be/ Where art thou? Why not upon-eth me?/ See it in my mind, let’s fulfil the prophecy.”

Not opposed to Sabrina rising to the top, and there's something a little nostalgic about her success - 2024 felt like the year where the old fashioned pop star pop ditty made a full comeback on the top of the charts - but all her radio singles, good qualities though they do have, did eventually become boring background material to me and so I didn't vote for 'em.

Shaboozey - A Bar Song (Tipsy) 170 points - 6 votesVideo“A Bar Song” is a really good song with an incredibly catchy hook, the perfect record to play to celebrate whatever feel-good moment has presented itself. It was the best song to release after Shaboozey landed two songs on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter. Somehow, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” became bigger than any of us imagined, as it tallied 19 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, tying a record previously set by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road.”

Yeah, I don't want to overthink it, it's just a catchy poptune, but I love how it does that trap-pop-thing where every verse is different, but the violin bit stays the exact same like it's a loop. It's sorta the real Post Malone-as-country song.

Geordie Greep - Holy, Holy 170 points - 6 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoThe newest Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars Geordie Greep as SATAN, fresh out of Hell in time for happy hour at LOCAL BAR, where his transferable skills from centuries of soul-snatching—seduction, manipulation, general wickedness—meet their match in UNNAMED WOMAN, the silent object of his desperate monologuing. Satan, it turns out, is quite lonely in Hell, which is why his pathetic pleas for banal connection are backed by a sprawling jazz-fusion ensemble. As his musings grow increasingly delusional, the stage musicians tumble down a slippery slope beginning with Boz Scaggs and ending with a scorched-earth take on Return to Forever’s Where Have I Known You Before. “We understand that this sounds batshit crazy on paper,” executives involved with the production said in a statement, “which is why we are pleased to inform you that it sounds even more batshit crazy on stereo.” Simultaneous face-scrunching, moral questioning, foot-tapping, and appreciation for complex jazz chords, or your money back, guaranteed.

Considering the historical significance of an otherwise unknown black artist putting a legit country tune, which interpolates a classic rap track, at the top of the hot 100 for a record-tying 19 weeks and becoming the first black male artist to chart #1 on both the hot 100 and hot country songs charts, I think its placement is well deserved.

Vampire Weekend - Capricorn 172 points - 6 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoThe bursts of what I think are heavily processed keyboards that start midway through “Capricorn” are genuinely surprising and lend a sense of danger and precarity to song that, up until that point, sounds like a pretty standard Ezra Koenig ballad including a piano break that sounds perhaps a little too much like the one from “Step.” (I can’t tell whether that’s an intentional thematic callback, which Koenig is wont to do and makes some sense as both songs are about aging, or if it’s simply a songwriter writing like themselves.)That noise, which sounds like an oddly sensual version of a BZZZT WRONG button in a game show, doesn’t entirely come out of nowhere. The percussion is presented with an exaggerated room sound that makes the whole song feel like it’s in soft focus. The air feels different in this song relative to previous Vampire recordings – dry and cold, filling a space that’s somehow both more and less claustrophobic. Koenig sounds distant as he sings about someone – a version of himself? – getting older and increasingly frustrated in trying to find answers, or pieces of the past that resonate with his particular place on a timeline. There are no answers in this song but there is some advice: “I know you’re tired of trying, listen clearly – you don’t have to try.” Is that the same as giving up? Not sure, but the music signals so much weariness and potential disaster that it’s at least asking someone to take a break and not be so hard on themselves.

Without wanting to come across like Rick Beato or anything, the interpolation of the J-Kwon song on 'Tipsy' bugs me for reasons I can't quite place. I've no problem with sampling and interpolation of course, happens all the time. But if you're going to lift passages from an absolute banger like 'Tipsy' at least make it count and don't water it down with thin gruel like this, you know? I get an uncanny "What have you done to my child?" vibe from this. Also, again, I realise I sound like I'm hard-Beatoing here, but the stingey amount of autotune he puts on his voice is irritating to listen to because it's neither here or there. Go hard or go home, Shaboozey.

Dina Ögon - Orion 174 points - 5 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoLike its predecessor, 2023’s Oas, Orion leans into a seductive mixture of soul, psychedelia, and Tropicalia while always emphasizing the band’s pop acumen. In the studio, Dina Ögon have made a habit of honoring the vintage sounds of the 1960s and ‘70s, though never at the expense of their songs, which sound timeless rather than retro. While this is also true on Orion, they have clearly taken strides to make something more modern in tone, and to great result. The uplifting title track is perhaps the most contemporary of the bunch with a lilting, infectious bounce.

A majestic, stentorian new song, Give It Back, suggests how she might handle it. The lyric was originally “take it back” – as in, her heart – before she reconsidered the necessity of connection. “It’s not something that has to do with only me,” she says. “It’s not mine to possess.”

Billie Eilish - Birds of a Feather 176 points - 5 votesVideoMany artists have sung lyrics like “I’ll love you ‘til the day that I die,” but far fewer have opened a love song describing their own funeral. It’s these contradictions—romanticism versus morbidity, sentimentality versus sarcasm—that keep Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” the sleeper hit from Hit Me Hard and Soft, grounded. But it’s the singer’s unbridled performance that makes the song truly soar. The novel sunshine cast across her signature sound ushers in a renewed version of the alt-pop star, freshly out of her teens and out as a young queer woman. “Birds of a Feather” isn’t just Eilish at her most romantic, but also at her most liberated and self-assured.

MJ Lenderman - She’s Leaving You 185 points 8 votesVideoThe thing about “She’s Leaving You”—and MJ Lenderman’s music in general—is how deceptively simple and direct it is. Give Lenderman four chords, and he’ll write you a song that’s both immediately human and achingly tender. Oh and he’ll make it rock, too. “She’s Leaving You,” the first single from MJ Lenderman’s breakthrough album Manning Fireworks, is a perfect example of what he does best on that record. The sad sack characters who rent Ferraris, think Clapton is the second coming, and go to Vegas if only for the lights could be anybody, or they could be you. “It falls apart, we all got work to do,” Lenderman and Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman (also Lenderman’s ex-girlfriend) sing together on a chorus that plays out perfectly and never overstays its welcome. I could listen to that chorus over and over again. It’s one of those singles where the first time you heard it, you knew you were listening to something special.

A promise, a question, a threat riding a crackly, popping beat. The song shifts gears from haunting to something more expansive. It’s a transfixing moment when Groves finally sets her voice free and lets it soar, interplaying with rich analogue synthesis before dissolving in a giggle.

https://i.imgur.com/zJPC7Om.png23. Nourished by Time - Hell of a Ride 191 points - 7 votesVideoThe loudest I heard a crowd sing back at an artist’s live show all year was probably for the “Goodbyeeeeee, baby, goodbyeeeeee!” that kicks off the chorus of Nourished by Time’s “Hell of a Ride.” Marcus Brown penned it as a tribute to all things good that have gone by the wayside—hope for a country whose land we can feel crumbling out from under our feet every day, hope that future generations will have something (anything!) to believe in, hope that the person you text when you’ve had a few too many will still value you despite it all, hope that we all survive longer than the time we’ve been given on a climate countdown clock. No one yelling that “goodbye” back to Brown has solutions to any of the aforementioned issues raised, but there’s still something joyous to crack open in those liquid guitar lines pinned beneath bright, sparkling synths, all lifting the singalong skyward. The second loudest callback I heard this year was the same performance, but earlier in the song, when Brown stepped away from the mic and the crowd picked up the “You know that’s still my baby” for themselves without a hitch. Even as the world simmers at a steady burn, I’ll never forget that line and the beaming grin on Marcus Brown’s face at a packed house who claimed it as their own.

Chaos, intrigues, family issues and when you can’t find any peace of mind… the only thing that could save my week, month and days was to go outside, try to leave all my troubles behind…look up at the sky, feel the strength of the sun, the heat, the wind and start all over. A new beginning, a new day.The sky is blue is about getting a new chance. Open your mind, and try to leave your problems behind, if only for a moment. https://i.imgur.com/i8X4FSe.png21. Sabrina Carpenter - Taste 196 points - 5 votesVideoI wasn’t sure before, but OK: I’m on board with the Sabrina Carpenter character. She’s a fantastically campy high femme train wreck: neurotic but assertive; condescending but kinda dumb herself; uptight, but doing her best to be flirty. As an introduction to an album and a persona, “I leave quite an impression/five feet to be exact” is an all-timer, up there with “Teenage angst has paid off well/now I’m bored and old” or “Been through the ringer a couple times/I came out callous and cruel.” On “Taste,” Carpenter is sunny and mean, like a great soap opera villain, and she accentuates her ’70s adult-contempo arrangement with some great melodramatic touches: the Greek chorus appending “la-la-la-la-la” to the description of cunnilingus, say, or the sudden appearance of a girl gang to turn “know I was already there” into a shouted accusation. (It tries for the gleeful kitsch of Chappell Roan, but it’s really bratty in an Olivia Rodrigo sense, which is delightfully unbecoming for a 25-year-old.) The theme of possession so intense it takes sensory form, as Britney Spears demonstrated on “Perfume” can be serious emotional territory, but Carpenter is happy to be frivolous with it. It’s fun to be bad, and pop’s Julie Cooper is ready to do her worst.

I know that Kate bush comparisons are handed out like halloween candy these days to any female artist who’s a little bit quirky so apologies for that, but the last few minutes of ‘give it back’ really do take me to Aerial-esque zones. And that’s not just the voice but the way it’s conceived and then executed. And I keep saying this about Connelly but for work that feels so considered, the result is so light and airy and ALIVE, incredible artist imo

ep2 was my fav album 2023, and i agree that catching chickens isn't quite as good, but i was encouraged by the way he was able to iterate on his sound. and to tastefully use the new xl recordings budget to expand and polish, without sacrificing his one-man-band charm

Yeah of all the very explicit pop that made the list so far, I'm digging the Sabrina tracks the most. They're very playful and sexy and feel less generic and trite than I Luv It, as an example. Bed Chem is also funny and I'm sad there's no music video to go with it.

Been busy and traveling this week so haven't kept up with the rollout much, but today had some things I voted for — Pa Salieu, Dina Ogon (groove is just unstoppable, I've put that song on 3 or 4 times in a row), MJ Lenderman (I like the song, found the album dull). But there was no discussion of "Saturn," so let's talk about it for a minute. In a strong year for big hit singles overall, to me "Saturn" was kind of the sleeper. It didn't quite dominate the summer the way the brats did, but it was a steady background thrum throughout. It has an odd, SZA-specific vibe, a moody escapism where the pain of the things you're trying to escape keeps subsuming the fantasy of getting away from them. Great lyrics, melodically lush — maybe the one of the year's big hits most likely to become some kind of standard. And definitely cemented SZA's stature.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 31 January 2025 03:03 (three weeks ago) link
xp otm, "Saturn" is amazing
catching up, already quite a few things i'd never heard of!
Jane Remover and Nourished by Time were in my top 3. at some point "Magic I Want U" became the only song in the world, irresistible in maybe a "Buffalo Stance" sort of way, had to move it way up the list. initially misheard (?) one of its lines as "i'll be your toothy baby," not that i needed an excuse to love it more.
and "Hell of a Ride" was a yearlong fave. it starts with two moments so massive that the first ends up like a fakeout, for ten seconds you think your vision has never been clearer or fuller and then pow, 00:31.

Haven't had much time to keep up with the results this week. Enjoying the countdown so far.
Voted for:
The Cure - Alone - Easily my favourite song on the album and was very surprised to see it just sneak in the list.
Magdalena Bay - Death & Romance - My number one was an album of track of theirs which looks like it has missed out.
Clairo - Sexy To Someone - The album was a huge step up and this was one of many highlights. I was hoping this would be her first proper hit.
The Blessed Madonna & Kylie Minogue - Such a banger, especially the instrumentation after the chorus. Wish the public had made this a Padam Padam sized hit.
Annie - Sky Is Blue - I know we're very loyal to Annie, but it was a surprise to see this so high. She's just the best.
Songs I didn't vote which I'm really glad made it included Saturn which was one of the few standouts on the largely forgettable S.O.S deluxe. The LL Cool J song which was my favourite song on the album. The Florence Adooni track as well which was one of the last songs I cut from my list. Love that Fabiana Palladino one as well. I voted for her album.
Biggest discoveries from the rollout so far are Clarissa Connelly and Open Space x Laura Groves. Not sure how I missed the latter as I love pretty much everything Laura Groves does.
Shaboozey followed by Geordie Greep is very much the part of the poll that isn't for me.
No idea what's going to win or what is still to come beyond a few that seem like obvious picks (Good Luck Babe, Espresso, Life Is, Bubble Gum). I could see Charli XCX suffering from split-voting. Was their a consensus pick from the Cassandra Jenkins album which is obviously going to do very well next week? Same with Beyonce.
I feel like I've been a bit out of touch with things on here in the last year which is actually making the countdown more exciting. Other years it felt obvious who would win or at least what the main contenders were.

― ufo, Friday, 31 January 2025 05:01 (three weeks ago) link
See, that's where I'm out of touch because I thought Bubble Gum was probably close to being as popular as Super Shy. It's purely just because I like it as much.
You're probably right about Charli. I just haven't been keeping track of her thread as much this year. I also figured a lot of people are still holding a grudge about Boys winning all those years ago and that caused a bit of a backlash. I don't know which the most popular Brat songs are on here. I ended up just going with the Lorde remix.

Of the Charlis, I'd expect the Lorde song to make it, maybe Von dutch and Guess too, but the others I wouldn't bank on. (I nominated "360" on the final day, moreseo for completeness' sake as I was surprised not to see it on the list, so I sort of doubt it's going to be top 20. But it seems like you only need 5-6 votes for that this year so who really knows).
I don't expect that there will be anything on my ballot that hasn't already been mentioned in this thread that might still appear. I expect we are headed towards a Chappell v Sabrina finale, I would probably tip the former. Maybe Tinashe as a potential podium wildcard.

Tommy Richman song is a nice bit of 2010s nostalgia (is it too early for that?) and fun to listen to - but is there more to it than that?
Speaking of 2010 nostalgia, that Machinedrum track is exactly the kind of thing I'd have liked back then but still gives me loudness-war-itis

I like music with a little bit of harmonic, melodic, textural or thematic depth, the Lenderman song followed a very simple chord progression without any variation while also sporting some, imo, fairly basic lyrics. I get that the sincere simplicity of the song may strike a chord with some, but it isn't for me, and it isn't anything like the indie I enjoy

Jessica Pratt - Life Is 200 points - 6 votesVideoI remember when I was a kid - the magnificent feeling of a friend who rushes over and presses something special & secret into your hand. The thrill of it, the privilege - but also the feeling of what an exciting thing it is to be alive, to have so much road unfurling before you. I might well have highlighted the closing track of Jessica Pratt’s outstanding (and outstandingly succinct!) 2024 album, a swan-song called “This Year,” but instead, here at the top of the list, I want to press into your hand something that’s like a scribbled note or a smooth, perfect stone. A song that gestures forward, not back, with hope and a shivering, adamant hope.

Arooj Aftab - raat ki rani 207 points - 9 votesVideoPakistani singer/composer Aftab was an unlikely nominee for Best New Artist at the 2022 Grammys, where she won the Best Global Music Performance trophy. A Berklee grad who’s adjacent to the N.Y.C. jazz community, she’s performed at Coachella and Glastonbury. “Raat Ki Rani” was the first single from Aftab’s Night Reign album—and no, I don’t know what she’s singing about, but it’s gorgeous and evocative, highly reminiscent of Sade at a time when we could all use that kind of calming, romantic beauty.

Kabin Crew and Lisdoonvarna Crew - The Spark 213 points - 7 votesVideoThe song sees the Kabin Crew joined by the Lisdoonvarna Crew – a group of youngsters living in refugee accommodation in County Clare. At a time when far-right protesters are increasingly intent on making their voice heard in Ireland, there’s something genuinely heartening about these kids coming together to create an almighty DnB banger. The track, which was written partly for Cruinniú na nÓg, the annual Irish celebration of youthful creativity, has now found a massive global audience. Last weekend, it even found its way into some of the sets performed on electronic music dance stages at Glastonbury – as documented on the Instagram stories of Irish DJ Annie Mac.

catching up on the things I wasn’t super familiar with from yesterday.
“orion”: liked dina ogon in the past but this is pleasurably forgettable. a nice groove to be sure, the tune seems to be an afterthought
“give it back”: really nice, makes me wish i paid attention to this album when it came out. i did wind up voting for a fellow copenhagen singer-songwriter’s song with “give” in the title that i sadly don’t believe will place
“control”: i appreciate the ilx poll for reminding me yearly when laura groves has something new out. don’t fully connect with this one, the burn is a little too slow
“the sky is blue”: been thinking a lot about sally shapiro’s great disco romance album lately, and this song would’ve fit right in

The lurch from massive Mariah chorus to snarling bloghouse verses and another, helium-voiced sped-up chorus feels as far from focus-grouped pop as humanly possible; closer to a head-spinning night out with your most captivatingly chaotic friend in all its ecstasy and freefall.

Burial - Boy Sent From Above 219 points - 7 votesVideoThis one wends through multiple tracks, like a clubber slipping from room to crowded room, but the bulk of its 13-minute running time is given over to a wistful freestyle synth arpeggio—in which you might hear an echo of Harold Faltermeyer’s theme to Beverly Hills Cop—paired with major-key chords stabs that glint like icicles in the sun. The mood is summed up by a plaintive scrap of a cappella that’s heard several times when the music pauses, joined by spray can rattle and ruminative synths: “We were running through the city/In the dark.” One of Burial’s chief fixations has long been nostalgia for a halcyon era of renegade freedom, and here, the image of a graffiti writer pining for wild youth feels like the epitome of the artist’s worldview.

Magdalena Bay - Cry for Me 231 points - 6 votes - 2 º1 votesVideoChoosing just one track from Magdalena Bay’s ambitious sophomore album Imaginal Disk is no easy feat, but if we had to highlight a song that encapsulates the album’s stunning breadth, it would be Cry for Me. This epic psych-pop masterpiece shimmers with infectious melodies that feel straight out of ABBA’s playbook. With soaring strings, monstrous synths, McCartney-esque basslines and a vocal hook so captivating you’ll find yourself singing along at the top of your lungs, it’s a dazzling blend of grandeur and catchiness. Pop perfection hardly does it justice.

Burial into this is, as the kids say, cinema
It's terrible but I think I would be way more interested in new Burial records if he divided the tracks, I never feel like listening to these long collage suites. Especially because they're clearly different pieces stitched together, and it's cruel not to separate out the bangers. He's still doing great work though.

To be clear, it’s not bafflement that people would like the solo turn from a member of a successful girl group, it’s expressing the opinion that said solo turn is a gigantic mess of half-formed ideas wretchedly executed and I feel second-hand embarrassment for JADE that she listen to this playback and thought “yes, this captures exactly what I wanted, ship it”
The fact that lots of people like it doesn’t automatically mean it’s any good. Lots of people have good taste in some things and bad taste in other things, it’s all idiosyncratic.

Doechii - Denial Is A River 232 points - 9 votesVideoMany storytellers like to build up suspense, lead the audience into a deepening mystery, and then hit us with a jaw-dropping reveal. Doechii, on the other hand, never strings listeners along. In the first verse of the Florida rapper/singer’s “Denial Is a River” from her debut mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, she revisits a purportedly autobiographical story from 2019 in which she reveals that her man is cheating on her with another man. That’s just the beginning of the story, though. Backed by a surprisingly upbeat and bare-bones instrumental that doesn’t quite match the tumult she details in her lyrics, Doechii keeps her messy narrative impressively light in tone. She playfully goes back and forth with a purported therapist and she frames the rest of the story amidst her rise in the music industry. At the same time, she acknowledges her affinity for sex, drugs, and money, all while noting that her self-worth was at an all-time low as she was enjoying the so-called perks of fame. With a vivid and humorous narrative and a song title that pays homage to a famous line from former salacious talk show host Wendy Williams, Doechii has solidified herself as a storyteller to watch with “Denial Is a River.”

Tinashe - Nasty 242 points - 7 votes - 1 º1 voteVideoTinashe went a whole decade constantly failing to launch then suddenly slipped out of the iron grip of RCA and started dropping classics. But a lifer like Tinashe wasn’t meant to stay away from the industry that’s had her since she was part of the Stunners (which also included the excellent Hayley Kiyoko), so she signed to Ricky Reed’s Nice Life imprint, released the bouncy, light BB/Ang3l, and went back on tour like any industry pro would. Now, we have “Nasty,” a light bubbly fizz drink of a song co-produced by Reed and the fantastic Zach Sekoff (architect of “Crabs in a Bucket,” “Homage,” and “Party People” off Vince Staples’s Big Fish Theory, as well as sharing in the spoils on “Freeman” from Dark Times). “Nasty” feels so comfortably settled and relaxed that you foolishly feel like volunteering to match her freak — until the beat switches into a rippling bass wave over the drums that presses you until you crumple. Guess it wasn’t you. NEXT!

some things i love about "nasty":- it's a filthy song that doesn't actually use any dirty language- great off-kilter bassline- hypnotic, half-sung verse melody- that weird minor chord substitution in the verse progression (that tinashe emphasizes with her "oh ah"s during the outro

Cassandra Jenkins - Delphinium Blue 244 points - 6 votes - 3 º1 votesVideo‘Delphinium Blue’ is a beautiful offering – opulent in its approach to sound, it moves from wistful, almost Enya-esque layers of gossamer synths to something distorted, feral, and noisy. Remarkable in its 3D rendering, ‘Delphinium Blue’ seems to encapsulate Cassandra Jenkins as a builder of worlds. In a note about the making of the song, she says…“Sometimes when I don’t know where to turn, I look for something reliably beautiful. Applying for a job at my local flower shop felt like survival instinct kicking in, and that job got me through one of the bluest periods in my life– being surrounded by flowers didn’t just make the weight easier to bear– it helped me understand it and myself better. I began to dream in technicolour; flowers became the language of my subconscious. At times I felt like I was surrounded by a Greek Chorus while I went about my menial tasks– they took on an all knowing quality, like they held the keys if I was willing to listen, like they were porters of my grief, and delicate portals to awareness.”

Charli XCX - Von Dutch 254 points - 8 votesVideoIt’s caked in an air of sweaty desperation dressed up as devil-may-care hedonism, which helps rather than hurts because of how unflinchingly skeletal the beat is, showing off its shotgun scaffolding to all who will see. She’s not trying to hide anything about how she’s trying to hide something. Never mind that the phrase “cult classic but I still pop” could be used to describe everything from the MC5 to DMB — it wouldn’t have suited their milieux, but it’s quintessentially XCX. It may be the line Charli was put on this earth to sing, even if through half-gritted teeth.

Addison Rae - Diet Pepsi 262 points - 8 votesVideoHer most successful song both artistically and commercially—a xanned-out ode to young lust and consumerism is deliriously catchy and helps solidify Rae’s place in the pop firmament. “Diet Pepsi” plays with nostalgia in every note with its lyrics plucking iconography from Lana’s Born To Die and its production calling back to a post “Royals” trap pop sound. “Diet Pepsi” is thoroughly American, and its gorgeous Sean Price Williams directed video drives that home. A vision in black and white, Rae looks like a 2020s Gilda as she drinks soda, eats a sundae, and drapes herself in the American flag. If an artist with less young hunger had tried this, it might feel dated. Instead, in Rae’s hands, it all feels shiny and new, untarnished by all influences.

Kim Gordon - BYE BYE 272 points - 8 votesVideoNoisy, abrasive, undeniably captivating, and maybe even a little sexy, Kim Gordon’s BYE BYE took everyone by surprise earlier this year with its Playboi Carti-adjacent energy. The single creates a surreal trap-infused dreamscape where Gordon coolly recites her holiday prep checklist alongside a litany of consumer products. Serving as a standout track on her dynamic solo album The Collective, BYE BYE is as engaging as it is unconventional. It’s a playful, unpretentious banger that bridges the gap between Sonic Youth loyalists who cherish Gordon’s experimental spirit and a younger audience drawn to her fresh, boundary-pushing sound.

To which Charli replied, “Fucking hell.” Speaking to body dysmorphia, disordered eating, sexism, and the politics of female friendship, Lorde added new emotional weight to what was already one of the most impeccably written pop songs of the year.

https://i.imgur.com/OvB4IoF.png5. Sky Ferreira - Leash 333 points - 15 votesVideoOn “Leash,” her new single for the Nicole Kidman–starring Babygirl, Ferreira blurs the borders between the film’s BDSM office relationship and the lingering scars from her own time at Capitol: “Chains are heavy, pull me close to you/Every scrape leads me back to you.” Striking a midpoint between her last two singles—the great, brooding “Downhill Lullaby” and 2022’s underwhelming “Don’t Forget”—“Leash” boasts the most euphoric chorus since anything off her lone LP, Night Time, My Time, redolent of the gothic grandeur of Siouxie and the Banshees’ “Kiss Them For Me.”And, yet, it’s hard to feel entirely optimistic. Night Time’s projected follow-up, Masochism, has been teased since 2015—first to the point of myth, then to the point of meme. You get the sense we might only have “Leash” at all because of the two-and-a-half week deadline Ferreira received from A24 and Babygirl director Halina Reijn. After the song’s first chorus, she counts down from five to one—a fitting metaphor for a career defined by anticipation, never quite managing to hit blastoff.

Such a triumphant return, such a righteous collaboration between a main popstar and JORGE ELBRECHT yes Lansing-Dreiden himself, not an Antonoff or a Nigro who never did anything good for themselves but one of artpop's great hyperrealisers constructing a giant, luxuriously detailed shoegaze fantasy for her to seize and own. Kendrick Lamar - Not Like Us 441 points - 14 votes - 2 º1 votesVideoThe biggest hip-hop feud in years boiled over this year, resulting in a total knockout from Kendrick Lamar against his sparring partner, Canadian hip-hop star Drake. “Not Like Us” is a ferocious and merciless point-by-point takedown of the “One Dance” artist, taking aim at his corny lyrics (“Then step this way, step this way,” Lamar mocks, referencing Drake’s 2020 hit “Toosie Slide”) to his futile flitting between hip-hop and pop (“Tell the pop star quit hidin’”). Lamar raps over a woozy sample of American saxophonist Monk Higgins’s “I Believe to My Soul” with mind-boggling dexterity, weaving in Pulitzer-worthy wordplay and funny asides. Adding insult to injury, “Not Like Us” was nominated for both Song and Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys. Sorry Drake, it’s no contest.
https://i.imgur.com/pkkdxo8.png1. Chappell Roan - Good Luck, Babe! 567 points - 18 votes - 3 º1 votesVideoIn a golden year for pop, few stars rose faster than Chappell Roan. An ode to a former lover who can’t admit to herself that she likes girls, “Good Luck, Babe!” is simultaneously hyper-specific and widely relevant. Such is the mission of pop music: to give you something you can relate to. In a song packed with hooks from verse to chorus, though, it’s the bridge that elevates “Good Luck, Babe!” into something truly extraordinary, as Roan drops the song’s thinly veiled well-wishing for the honest unapologetic truth: “I told you so.”

The things GLB most has going for it are that chorus vocal melody (fantastic) and the fact there's a bit of restraint to the lyrics and performance, there's a genuine pathos to it

i like ‘not like us’ but not as much as most people. i agree with what noz wrote about it in his year-end wrap up
25. kendrick lamar - "not like us" (mustard, sounwave & sean momberger)the best thing about rebranding this series as "favorite rap" rather than "best rap" is it affords me the freedom to put this particular song at #25 and not at #1 which, by any other zeitgiest barometer measurement, is where it should objectively place. as someone who has spent the past fifteen years begging everyone to turn off drake's godawful dogshit music you'd think i'd be able to take some pleasure in his alleged downfall but i've been completely unmoved by it. for one because we all know he is going to be right back in ten months with the worst song you've ever heard everywhere but also because there was not one point in the battle where kendrick just flat out said that the man makes godawful dogshit music. instead he just went all in on the qanon-tier [6] anyone i don't like is a secret pedophile and i'm the only person alive who can uncover their crimes conspiracies because that is the only critical lens left for americans. [7] i mean, he could've straight come out on the his hair wack his gear wack his jewelry wack tip and still fully decimated him. or alternately he could've played it cool and just brushed dude off with complete nonchalance. why do i suspect that this single shot from one of the more talented lyricists residing in the colonized territory of atlanta stung aubrey harder than anything kenny had to say: "do you really think i need a fuckin drake verse?"on the other hand i cannot deny that "not like us" is a good song, sure. it's maybe the first kendrick record since "alright" that works better as an actual song than as a ~performance of excellence~ (or catharsis). it's exactly the sort of song he should've been making back in 2017/2018. you know, back when stinc team and sob x rbe were peaking doing similar shit with only a fraction of his visibility. as a matter of fact the ratchet/jerkin/hyphy lineage that "not like us" nods to has been the dominant sound of the west coast for the past twenty+ years now, so its both satisfying to hear it manifest a huge crossover hit and frustrating to think that most of the country was only willing to finally and fully embrace it after it got an express blessing from the world's only pulitzer prize winner/amateur pedophile hunter.

Excellent work Moka and seandalai!
I gave (unweighted) points to #2 and #3 but have no recollection of hearing #1 before the Triple J kiddies also voted it #1 last week such that it became an actual news story here lol. I do dig the kinda-sorta casiotone preset arrangement and its collapse at the end.
Belated 'yay' also for the likes of Doechii, Fievel Is Glauque, Real Lies, Jessica Pratt, Dina Ögon, Mabe Fratti, Little Simz and Vanishing Twin (though I believe I voted for a different track/corresponding longplayers instead for couple of those)

― donna rouge, Friday, 31 January 2025 23:45 (three weeks ago) link
thrilled that "lucky" made it to #3! my #1, edc's very best yet
"girl so confusing" is deservingly the highest charli track but honestly the version without lorde is better, i forgot to nominate it
"bye bye" is an interesting novelty (kim gordon making a rage track!) but her vocal style just doesn't work on it at all for me
"boy sent from above" was the best burial track in quite a while, love his take on electro
"angel of my dreams" is basically a kpop track from ~12 years ago when those sort of dramatic stylistic shifts were really trendy over there and that's an incredibly good thing, i love that era
"as above so below" placing this high is wonderful
the biggest surprise for me is "love you got" not even coming close to placing, i'm completely baffled there

Thanks to Moka and Seandalai for putting this all together. It has been a nice distraction on a rubbish week.
That's a really excellent top 20 overall. I didn't realise Lucky was that popular. I really liked her last album, but couldn't get into her new one much at all. That's definitely the standout.
I had the same experience as devvvine awhen Von Dutch came out. I wasn't blown away by it and felt like I was getting too old for that sound and the accompanying video. I warmed up to it a lot, but it's still not my one of my very favourites on the album. Girl So Confusing (either version) is one of the best she's done.
