ILM's 2025 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / NOMINATIONS THREAD

It's been another year, and it's time to settle some scores. You know what to do.

- Nominations are open until midnight PST on Friday January 2nd.

- Everyone gets a max of 30 nominations, split as you see fit across tracks and albums. You can nominate 15 albums and 15 tracks, or 29 albums and 1 track, or 0 albums and 30 tracks - you get the idea.

- Please make sure it's obvious which nominations are tracks and which are albums.

- Always use the order "Artist - Track"/"Artist - Album", never put the artist second. It's hard enough to filter out duplicates as it is.

- Ctrl+F through the thread before nominating, or check the spreadsheets:

If it didn't place last year and can reasonably be said to be a song from this year (e.g. it was on an album or the single got re-released/released in different territories/went from obscuro to a chart hit), it's okay to nominate again. You might not get the people who voted for it last time voting for it a second time so it still might not place, but it's allowed.

Good luck! I mostly know that this is how it works b/c I've nominated a bunch of obscure DIY bandcamp-only tracks where I'm the only vote, then they get a nom from someone else the next year when they come out on vinyl... but I feel like I can't vote for them a second time so they end up with only one vote for a second year in a row.

YHWH Nailgun is sort of funny to me, because there are countless Instagram drummers with the same very impressive but homogenous linear post-Gospel Chops style, which makes for amazing short form videos and reads well in arena pop, but rarely has a place on a record. But here it makes sense and has broken containment (the containment of drummers impressing other drummers).

My understanding (and assumption when I didn’t bother writing out Skilli and Shenseea’s credits!) is remixes are always combined with track nominations so I was effectively nominating both — is this correct?

I always think it's interesting when I hear people say "(Such and such a track) was EVERYWHERE this year". When actually it's more likely the track played out a lot in their little pocket of the world, or their scene, or their social media.

Like, I will frequently have no idea what the latest big hit is because I don't have terrestrial TV and avoid pop radio. But to others this is the whole world.

Similarly, I'll hear trendy dance music people talk about a particular club anthem and call it the sensation of the summer. But it's not like I heard it streaming out of cars for three months - that's just a thing that happened possibly in a few clubs i've never been to before.

And then from my POV there'll be some Afrobeats or soca tune that I just assume everyone is sick to death of, which in reality only me and my friends and a few people on the Internet have heard whom I know - hardly a viral sensation outside of the countries they were made in.

So yeah, come EOY results each year I'm always surprised at what ILM has deemed a surefire top 10 win because I genuinely haven't heard 70-80% of these ostensibly big tunes

in response to some of the TS- related posts, I live in Philadelphia— the grocery stores play James Brown and/or quiet storm jazz, not TS. i haven’t been in a mall in years. the last time i was in a cafe, they were playing very gay 80s hits, including Red Rockers “China,” which I hadn’t heard in a decade or more. TS is ubiquitous, but only if you live a certain type of lifestyle that many people don’t live.

The last song that I genuinely felt was EVERYWHERE in recent times, for a year and a half or so, was “Not Like Us”.

i live in the plateau/mile end neighborhood in montreal, possibly the most insulated-against-hearing-Taylor-swift-neighborhood in north america, and i have heard the ophelia song here at least a couple times. i think the major difference is not one of lifestyle, but that i had actually listened to the song and therefore recognized it when i heard it on the radio whereas you hadn’t

i wouldn’t go so far as to say ophelia was inescapable, but it was the number one song on the radio for a stretch in the summer. it’s very likely that, if you were exposed the radio, or a playlist playing popular songs, you heard it, even if it went unnoticed. it’s honestly it’s not a very remarkable song, i doubt i’d have noticed it if i hadn’t listened to the album. i don’t think it’s so much “poptimists think all pop songs are inescapable” as “insecure fear pop cooties and pridefully declare their immunity”

as for the anthropological details, i can’t say with too much specificity for ophelia in particular. i distinctly remember hearing it playing out of a passing car at jeanne-mance parc in august. i don’t remember a specific instance of hearing ophelia at a bar, was speaking more generally, but you’re probably right it’d be more of a gay bar thing. most of the places i get lunch/coffee near work have the radio on, so i’m sure i have heard it while getting a shawarma or pizza or whatever. out of the two grocery stores closest to my house, one of them plays the radio (tables’ quiet storm grocery store sounds nice). pretty mundane stuff

"ophelia" is a #1 radio hit in america and yet it is still very easily escapable. the top radio hits now get way fewer impressions (estimated "listens") than they did last decade. even on a top 40 station, someone tuning in for one song is as likely to encounter a big hit from 5-15 years ago as a current hit. streaming numbers are also generally weak right now, with many old songs shockingly high in the rankings. new mainstream music is less easily escaped when people are actually listening to it.

i also live in philly tho my experience of it is certainly rather different from table's and more attuned to radio, generic drugstores and so on. tho "ophelia" is played fairly regularly by our stations now (to those who actually listen), the uptake of that song at philly's stations seems (to me) to have lagged well behind the national average basically every step of the way

and as has also been noted it is a very easy song to fail to notice (as new) when not previously aware of it
