Insane that these guys went mega-viral and are selling out pressing after pressing of vinyl and no one is interviewing this band

my one piece of constructive criticism for the band is that the drummer should attach some kind of cymbal or shaker to his floppy nose. perhaps a set of castanets?

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 March 2026 18:58 (five months ago)

Wonder if they're Gong/Hillage fans, Mata Zyklek has that Glorious OM Riff DNA

Maresn3st, Monday, 9 March 2026 21:20 (five months ago)

these guys are so hot right now. both NY shows sold out so fast.

BringTheAuBonPain, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 01:34 (five months ago)

have you pitched an interview anywhere, WGW?

alpine static, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 03:50 (five months ago)

I really want to but I’m super busy right now. I pitched a review at least.

EsBeeKid (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 04:16 (five months ago)

whiney if you interview them can you ask if they know Les Georges Leningrad?

flopson, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 15:46 (five months ago)

Hype-allergic though I usually am, I dig this pair a lot and have been preaching the good news about them to all of my friends.

There's something about their melding of the appealing and unappealing that is just very refreshing to me right now. And I like how their virtuosity is tempered by a kind of post punk minimalism. The costume and fake language gimmick is the sort of thing that would usually irritate me, but here I find it very charming. Good times all around.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 20:04 (five months ago)

There is something about their whole deal that reminds me of something my friends and I would have dreamed up back in high school, except we would have had zero chops and been totally unlistenable.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 20:09 (five months ago)

so hype and gimmicks are bad ... unless you like them? is that the takeaway?

alpine static, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:12 (five months ago)

yes, that's exactly it

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:43 (five months ago)

real, boring answer: hype and gimmicks are neither good nor bad, they just tend to put me off. That's a "me" thing, not a judgment on anyone's art or means of promoting themselves

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:45 (five months ago)

and when an artist manages to disarm me from my usual prejudices, I think it's interesting. It's like a magic trick--how'd you pull that off?

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:47 (five months ago)

fair enough. i don't know why i chimed in. bored, i guess. my bad!

alpine static, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 22:15 (five months ago)

loving these guys, the two friends who both passed them on to be cited Gizzard vibes and they definitely chime with the Gizz's microtonal eras

congragulations (stevie), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 23:24 (five months ago)

The videos I’ve seen of them performing are a somewhat hypnotic experience. Coordination is their main trick and they’re pretty good at it. I don’t mind the gimmicks. This is one of those instances where I feel it’s ironically less distracting for them to play with masks than it would be to have them showing their faces doing awkwardly focused expressions.

One of those bands I’d pay to see live but wouldn’t buy an album.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 11 March 2026 06:10 (five months ago)

Me and my son have been enjoying the stuff that comes up on my You Tube algorithm. he's basically spellbound with the videos.

hey, if it puts a 12 year old onto prog influenced math rock and away from Spotify/lofi beats slop, then masks off to them.

just seen the electric Ballroom gig is sold out + 14+ age restriction so we'll have to stick to the online videos only.

I don't mind the gimmick, kind of nice to have a band with a clear visual design language that doesn't feel cynically grafted on.

the painted bare feet are especially chefs kiss.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 11 March 2026 13:26 (five months ago)

Watching the KEXP session every night before going to bed. Spellbound is indeed the right word.

sarahell, Wednesday, 18 March 2026 03:14 (five months ago)

I think they are good (good not bad). And probably way more enjoyable to listen to without video than Clown Core (who are also incredible in their way).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 March 2026 03:50 (five months ago)

One of those bands I’d pay to see live but wouldn’t buy an album.

Given how much people are asking for this on Discogs, seeing them live is likely to be far more economical.

I agree with your assessment though. I would tag along to see these guys but I don't think I need to sit and home and listen to this.

Cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria de Episcopio, Wednesday, 18 March 2026 04:12 (five months ago)

When I first saw this video I literally texted my group chat “This the type of shit l0u1s jagg3r is like “How can you people listen to Rosalia over this””

EsBeeKid (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 18 March 2026 05:50 (five months ago)

Of course like 5 minutes later they became my favorite band in the world, so game recognize game I guess

EsBeeKid (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 18 March 2026 05:52 (five months ago)

lol I've had my whole 'Rosalia is good' arc, although her last album undid it a bit

This? This first album is...okay. It's a bit too Palm/Horse Lords-adjacent for me, i.e. I can imagine it being absolutely incredible live, but less impressive in terms of studio composition - the songs don't really take journeys, they meditate upon cool patterns. I'd definitely be up for seeing them in person. This last weekend I went to the Bridget Riley exhibition in Margate and that was much the same - paintings I'd probably scoff at on a screen ("it's just colour bars!") suddenly become hypnotic, psychedelic, overwhelming when they're lifesize and in your face and you can't focus on one spot. Simple patterns, but so vast, so cool...this kind of music works, for me, in that visceral context, rather than on headphones

imago, Wednesday, 18 March 2026 09:29 (five months ago)

Were you on drugs? … idk I don’t find Riley that compelling, but that’s consistent with my general art preferences.

sarahell, Wednesday, 18 March 2026 15:24 (five months ago)

I mean I'm not usually into that sort of thing either, but something about the size and difficulty of focus...I had been drinking and had also just consumed whelks though

In fairness too, it's microtonal but definitely doesn't feel as "challenging" as some stuff (like, Horse Lords would probably be their closest analog, but they definitely project a Frippish egghead chilliness that's makes it more off-putting initially); they have pretty strong pop instincts even working within the framework of avant rock.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 23 March 2026 17:25 (four months ago)

"industry plants"

Rick Beato brought this up on his channel when he posted a "reaction" video (positive, fwiw). He's like, "you can't plant something this weird! The music industry *wishes* it could make stuff like that happen!"

So does this count as a trend, microtonal indie rock? Horse Lords, King Gizzard, these goofs? Are there more nerds out there rocking 100-fret guitars or whatever?

takes a while to get used to the quarter frets from a playing standpoint, pretty tight spacing. standard tuning feels like it just doesn't work, found some Turkish scale theory stuff that was over my head, having a little bit of progress with a tuning King Gizzard uses

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 23 March 2026 22:37 (four months ago)

Quick, hop on this with a food truck Angine de Poutine

Come On, (Eazy), Monday, 23 March 2026 23:49 (four months ago)

the guitars that kglw use aren't full 24-tet, they just have a few extra frets (i think 2 or 3 per octave) so you can play some quarter note scales but far from all

it looks like the angine de poitrine guy's custom dual-neck is 24-tet except for the highest frets, on both the guitar and bass. i presume that's because the extra frets would be very impractical for the highest notes?

ufo, Tuesday, 24 March 2026 00:45 (four months ago)

the costumes are funny but i don't really get whatever excitement exists around these guys. they settle into a decent groove from time to time but that's about it really

Oh, not to say Circle et al aren't popular, but AG seem to be suddenly 'massive' (eg decent sized gig sold out in seconds here, everyone talking about them).

It's not an especially deep comparison from me anyway and I'm sure there are plenty of other better touchstones, but the weird yet catchy nature of the music and the costumes and slight theatricality of it do make me think of Finland's finest ("best band in the world" - me, circa 2012).

That's great to hear re Pharaoh Overlord - was that London?

I was at the Club Soda show on good Friday, and it was a madhouse. Whiney's p4k review is dead-on, it's some of the most danceable mathy rock I've ever heard, it translates extremely well to a packed room. People seem genuinely hungry for indie rock that remembers to rock, and the overall vibe was incredibly joyous.

Apparently they have three other (supposedly very good) albums out under their previous name. But I understand they don’t want to ruin the privacy so I kind of wish I hadn’t seen the post.

alpine static, Monday, 29 June 2026 08:54 (one month ago)

i saw some clips of this on instagram and the comments were mostly along the lines of "lot of noise for a group no-one will think of in a year". And maybe that's true, but I find the viscerally cynical reaction to this group's success - precisely because they're entertaining in their presentation, and they're doing something striking (which nevertheless has forebears, but) - really deadening and eyeroll-inducing. Like there's an avalanche of Rick Beato-wannabes online who want to declare themselves ahead of the trend dying, because they weren't there for the moment it was exciting. It really reminds me of critics I knew around the time the White Stripes surfaced, who couldn't see the substance in what they were doing, or how a group that disrupted the norm by being visually entertaining could become a genuine cultural phenomenon.

I think skepticism is a natural response when a lot of people suddenly attach themselves to a particular thing at the exact same time, and I think it's perfectly reasonable to be suspicious of such phenomenons. But I also wonder if these skeptics ever think about the fact that many of the "real" things they profess to love, from the Beatles to Backrooms, have likewise benefited from similarly inorganic strategies

Obviously I don't know who was there or their internal reasons for coming (and I didn't go, rightly guessing it would be insanely crowded), but speculating and it's kind of a perfect storm situation: extremely successful local band that appeals to both franco- and anglophones, emerging elements of "bands that are their own subculture" alongside a kind of quirky fun mass phenomenon thing, free show on a Saturday night, super nice weather, peak tourist season, Montreal is a young person / university student town in a lot of ways, and AdP do have a surprisingly wide appeal even in my limited experience of playing it for people who literally don't like/listen to anything else remotely like this

rob, Monday, 29 June 2026 13:32 (one month ago)

I guess maybe the costumes started as a gimmick but it seems they have evolved into a core aspect of their art. The presentation seems equally indebted to theater and music, in the way they integrate lights into the costumes and make them part of the show. Also we shouldn't underestimate the visual ingenuity of the costumes. No shade to Buckethead, who has been plowing this furrow of silly costume plus technical virtuosity for decades, but this goes way beyond just putting a KFC bucket on your head, wearing a mask, and calling it a day. Musically they are in that lineage of funky drummer + looped-instrument duos. Everyone probably has their personal favorite, though I am partial to Spaceheads, who are probably now wishing they had made the costumes from this video a permanent part of their stage show:

It’s a free concert and Canada won in the world cup against South Africa so they passed to the next phase. Maybe people were already on the streets and wanted to celebrate? I don’t know how popular soccer is over there but Mexico streets have been insanely crowded after each win.

> One of those bands I’d pay to see live but wouldn’t buy an album.

There is something about disorienting presentation that really helps along these mostly instrumental bands - Glass Beams, Khruangbin, even the mid-century clothes of La Lom. I'm not much into Thee Oh Sees proggier turn, but I'll still watch a video of them spaz it up - part of the entertainment is seeing how it's made. Math rock can end up mixing so many pigments it turns into a gray mush. Adding theatricality gives the brain something to focus on to be able to take in the info, like doodling on a notepad to listen to a dense lecture.

bendy, Monday, 29 June 2026 15:00 (one month ago)

We were in town hoping to go to the show. It was a gorgeous day and there were people dressed in polka dot suits roaming the streets hours earlier. We had dinner on Rue St-Denis before the concert and there was non-stop bike traffic whizzing by downhill. I expected a lot of people, but by the time we got over the to festival, it was ~crazy~ crowded with people of all ages. We weren't going to be able to see anything and it was only getting more and more crowded so we unfortunately bailed. At the airport, we overheard a family say they got stuck behind the stage.

Welcome to my current hyperfixation.

The people in the front got there about 7-10 hours before it started. They got to watch one or possibly two mostly costumeless soundchecks--they were wearing the dark over-the-face things that they wore to set up in a few shows during part of it, and adding costumes without makeup for another part of it. The fans weren't supposed to get pictures and videos of this, but they did, and what I saw was possibly even better than the footage of the show--part of it seemed to be something that might be new, with some exceptional Klek drumming. (Incidentally, the anonymity thing seems to have moved from "I have no idea who they are" to "I know, and I know enough about what they look like to be able to pick them out in crowds, but I'm still going to pretend that I don't because I like them enough to play along with this.")

absolutely. "relevancy" is a mirage. the degree to which others rate something is unimportant and boring to discuss. what matters is what the artist, their noise, their presentation, their performance, their intellectual quotient, their concept, their universe, makes you feel. anything else is dull stats for the dead-inside to sift over.

Spaceheads are a live looping band, that's why I mentioned them. I'm not sure live looping is catnip for normies, but for obvious reasons, it does tend to produce songforms which are rather static harmonically, which is probably easier to digest for most listeners.

o. nate, Thursday, 2 July 2026 13:35 (one month ago)

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 2 July 2026 13:52 (one month ago)

If you're pushing the envelope in terms of tonality or sonics then it probably helps to keep the rhythmic and harmonic structure fairly static, which live looping naturally lends itself to. So most people (notice I didn't say normies) probably like AdP for the same reason "Kind of Blue" is the most popular jazz album.
