I have a dificult time imagining a revival of the last gasp of non-sophisto adult-contempo older-guy charting soft pop before Gen X dethroned the Boomers at the turn of the decade (Marc Cohn, Michael Bolton, post-Cetera Chicago, the execrable Grayson Hugh), but maybe it's more of a "there can only be one remaining" situation, and Bily Joel already rules that kingdom.
I don't consider Elton John or Paul Simon to be in that category, but I'm open to arguments on the contrary

re the steely dan comment above, those guys never went away at any point, i suspect they were only briefly unhip with a small minority, and it was with a very specific contingent of music fans. the barbs they took didn't stick because the reality didn't match what everyone was saying about them.
Cetera-era Chicago is a pretty good call...I think pretty much all of Chicago and other bands along those lines, like Blood Sweat and Tears, those are hard to revive. There's just nothing to hold onto there imo. and they're just not much fun to listen to.

I meant the post-Cetera era, when Chicago were still charting in 1990 with songs like "What Kind of Man Would I Be?" that were total sonic hangovers from their mid-'80s horn-free balladry that I once read was mastered to pop from clock radio speakers

Manson and Zombie have done co-headlining tours in the US the last few years, and Zombie just released a new album with the band that was on his earliest solo records, so he's kind of attempting a comeback/closing the loop. I don't know who goes to see him live these days, but the new record is OK.

It was bewildering that anyone saw it as threatening first time round too, decades after Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper et al. I would guess the demographic that felt shocked in the 90's still exists, but doubt their edgelord kids would go for this stuff.

Coming back to Biohazard, they’re playing 2,000-capacity venues now (in their home market!), that’s pretty meagre for a band that headlined festivals for 120,000+ people in the mid-90s, and arguably provided the nu-metal blueprint.

I'm firmly in the "you can never predict" crowd because there was a time I would have bet big money that new age music would never have a hipster renaissance, that no band would ever cite Blink 182 as an influence, and that Billy Joel LPs would never sell for more than $3 anywhere in the world

the early 90s Boomer adult-contemporary stuff is a decent working theory. Deadeye Dick/Sister Hazel axis also seems promising. i'll gamble on a bigger target from this "continuity with pre-grunge college rock aesthetics" pool and say that Collective Soul, though a couple of their songs linger on in recurrent airplay, will never be revived.
whereas i could see Arrested Development's earnestness reclaimed through rose-colored glasses - the way some 90s kids really bought into 60s hippie myths about the days when the music mattered and people really believed in things and weren't afraid of looking corny etc.
basically we're looking for the equivalent of 60s/70s acts whose stuff migrated to the dollar bins early and never got back out. historically that includes a lot of stuff that was comparatively minor in the first place, of course. but for this to happen to BIG acts, i think it helps if their bigness was with people who didn't need the music later in life, or wasn't invested in passing down their legends. who are the 90s Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, or Rick Derringer? second-tier boy bands are obvious candidates but there must be rock and hip-hop equivalents. but again i'll go big and say that NKOTB will not outlive the warm nostalgia of their original fanbase.
stuff that had intergenerational appeal, that was "safe" with parents, is both lacking in "cool" from day 1, and loses half of its constituency as the parents age out of the picture - I've long believed this explains the premature evaporation of Three Dog Night's legacy along with other "light entertainment"-adjacent acts who didn't cultivate Diamond-like cults. i'm not quite ready to write off Hootie and the Blowfish but idk. Matchbox 20 aren't *quite* this, exactly, but i could see them ending up here. Wyclef could also be in trouble.

Is hip-hop less susceptible to revivals than other music?
That certainly WAS the case.Post-Versuz, it seems like hip-hop does more looking back than ever before. Used to be that anything more than a couple years old was corny as hell, now people seem to put more energy into listening to a Mount Rushmore of classic artists than they do minting new legends. We sell loads of old hip-hop to kids. By old, of course, we're talking Kanye and Tyler, not Public Enemy and EPMD.

In my sphere, the Doors movie was a BIG deal. Lots of 90s teens reading books of Morrison poetry and wearing beaded necklaces, carrying his biography around. Girls and boys were both into him. look these bands are just as popular, if not more popular, than '77 punk. there are kids out there today who think _the division bell_ is the best pink floyd album. anything can "come back". the bigger issue for groups like marilyn manson is the fact that marilyn manson has in fact done genuinely terrible things that are, uh, not particularly related to his stage persona. obviously that's not going to stop him from being popular, but it is going to skew his fanbase!

In case anybody's interested, here are our top 40 catalog cds for the year so far. This doesn't include any new releases... and doesn't include KPOP, which is a separate (and bigger for us) category. As most of our music customers are middle school to college age, this is a moderately accurate representation of what "the kids" currently enjoy.

Re Buckley: "Lover You Should've Come Over" was a recent viral hit:
In the mid-2020s, the song experienced a surge in popularity through its use as background music in videos posted to the short-form video platform TikTok.[14] In January 2024, it appeared on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, and reappeared there at number 19 in September 2024.[15] In April 2025, it appeared on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart for the first time, debuting at number 22.[16] In late January 2026, it debuted at number 97 on the main Billboard Hot 100 chart,[17] peaking at number 84 the following week.

Is your vinyl clientele in the same demographic as your CD buyers?
I had assumed that if kids went for physical media it would be vinyl, not CDs (K Pop of course excepted), I guess that's wrong.

Vinyl is a bit older skewing for us at this point. It’s VERY expensive comparatively, so while the kids like it, it’s much easier to afford cds. And Zoomers and younger don’t have the negative associations w cds that millennials had/have.

xps I went to a free Arteated Development show last year and got there an hour early to get a good spot - except for the handful of middle-aged people in the “reserved” line who RSVP’d earlier to claim guaranteed entry, I was the only one there and until the doors opened, there weren’t that many standing in line. The show did eventually get a good crowd - again it was free and I think most people simply skipped the openers - but it felt like a big indicator that they were a nostalgia act that didn’t reach far beyond their original audience.

i very very rarely buy and thus play any new music on vinyl but just from a packaging perspective, my sense/experience is that new vinyl is usually barely worth the cardboard it's packaged in. very little effort put into art direction, any booklet or insert beyond a front and back piece of paper etc -- maybe there's artists like tyler, taylor etc for whom this isn't true (i wouldn't know) but i don't think the juice is worth the squeeze w/ most of those purchases and it wouldn't surprise me if consumers have internalized this fact years deep into the resurgence of vinyl

if you are buying vinyl in 2026 strictly for audio reasons and don't really care what the packaging looks like, you're in the extreme minority. a major part of the appeal even if you want to play the vinyl a lot is to have something tactile in a world where physical media is disappearing, and if you pay $25 for vinyl that appears to not have much effort or care put into the tactile aspect then that is a meaningful gap between intention of your purchase and its reality

but there's no reason why that should be the case. QC is frequently just the last consideration of these labels.
― omar little, Tuesday, 7 April 2026 20:04 (two weeks ago)
This is another reason why I stuck with CD's - vinyl is just too much of a hassle, I just want to buy it and play it, not deal with all these manufacturing issues. I've never had to return a brand-new CD because of a manufacturing defect that actually impacted the sound. I've returned two because they were visibly marred in some way - in one case it looked like a tiny hair dropped into it when it was being pressed - but in all honesty they probably would've played fine and this is like two CD's out of god knows how many.

I'm talking more about reissue stuff, like for example if you can find it onsale, the Blue Note Tone Poet series will absolutely blow you away (as good as the Mobile Fidelity stuff imo), as will the Rhino Hi-Fi stuff....also certain labels like Light in the Attic...Matador used to be really good esp if it had the Pressed at RTI label, but I haven't bought anything from them lately.
My main point is that - on the high end - they have the capability with modern mastering and manufacturing to press just incredible vinyl.
the real future (hopefully) is Green Vinyl out of the Netherlands, the last Shellac record (To All Trains) was pressed on that. It's not vinyl, rather recycled plastics like pop bottles etc, also it's not pressed but injection molded...the injection molding I think is the real key, I can't say I've ever heard a record pressed with less background noise than the Shellac album.

also I know I'm cruising for a bruising posting audiophile stuff on ILM but with vinyl the equipment just matters more - the turntable, cartridge, and phono pre - far more than it does with any digital source. it's a mechanical medium and the difference can be pretty striking.

I remember Albini talking about this before he died and was curious about it. It doesn't get talked about often, but vinyl manufacturing is really toxic - there just hasn't been a real alternative of at least equal quality. But Albini said he did quite a few tests and was extremely pleased with the results, so if that's the case then hopefully it catches on.

Cast supported oasis on their UK dates recently and just had a new lp out, some kids will be into that. Gene about to do second run of reunion shows as I guess not enough of their fanbase heard about lead singers private life to put them off.

The other three mentioned probably confined to just doing Shine On Weekender every year?
reunion nostalgia tours do not count as revive moments, so I do not count any of these. OTOH can report that there are loads of gen z and gen alpha Pulp fans in the community, feels like they outnumber us oldies now

A lot of the young folk I know who went to see Oasis have now become Cast fans.

Immaterial Possession includes at least one member who is Elephant 6 offspring, carrying the psychedelic vapors forward, with a dose of 1920s dada.
